Hey there, glad you liked my video. I'm glad to hear that you're considering starting kickboxing 🙂 Yeah injuries can be a concern, and I'm not going to lie - you will get injured at some point when taking part in any contact sport. I've has a few injuries myself over time, but the key to minimising the risk of injury is to make sure you wear protection such as shin guards, hard wraps, mouth guard amd head guard (when sparring). Also be careful not to jump in at the deep end too soon. Some places will have you sparring from day one. The academy I go to will only let you spar once you reach a certain grade/belt amd they are confident that you have the technical skills and ability to spar and have fun while learning without the risk of injury. Allowing beginners to spar too soon can put them off if they get injured, and they see more likely to quit as a result. Hope this helps. Let me know how to get on and give me a shout if you have any more questions. Good luck! 🙂👍🏻

@@johnnyboykickboxer8302 so I’m gonna start adult kickboxing classes. I’m pretty sure I’ll be the youngest there but will the coaches be harder on me since I’m younger?
@@Kaleb._ the coaches will certainly push you no matter your age - they want to push you to be the best that you can. But I can't see why they would be any harder just cos of your age. Any good instructor should push you depending on your fitness level and your potential capabilities rather than just based on your age. Having said that, you definitely have an advantage over a lot of the older guys - your youth! Use this to your advantage as with a bit of training you'll eventually end up being able to execute a lot of the techniques wit ease as you'll be more flexible than the older guys. Also as you're younger you're more likely to have a better memory when it comes to remembering all of the different techniques. When do you start your classes? @@alexphillips7544 same here - I was 38 when I first started. That was 4 amd a half years ago and I'm still not used to taking hits to the head, lol 😆. To be honest, I dint think you ever get used to it as nobody likes being hit in the head. But over time you will get better at evading or blocking those attacks. You'll eventually get a feel of when an attack is coming that way based on your opponents body language, and you'll be able to slip, roll, or block the attack and then counter attack to hopefully take him by surprise. As I say it all takes time though and lots of practice. Make sure you practice at home too by doing lots of shadow boxing. Imagine there's an opponent standing in front of you throwing kicks and punches, and practice getting out of the way (slips, rolls, lean back etc) and blocking. You'll get there eventually, but yeah you will get hit (lots) in the meantime and its never nice. You just need to figure out how to minimise it 🙂👊🏻
Thanks mate, glad you liked the video 🙂. That's great that you're starting kickboxing and BJJ. The only thing you need to remember is that it will be hard work and at times you will ask yourself what are you doing there, hah ha! But you will enjoy it and you'll have a great time. Remember that you're new and you won't learn everything on your first day, it takes a long time to learn the techniques and drills. Be humble - a lot of guys will likely have been going for quite some time and could kick your ass if you try to get the better of them during sparring/training. You may not get to spar at first until you've been there for a while, so take this time to focus on learning the techniques. just go in with an open mind. listen and take any advice on board that others more experienced may give you. You will have bad days but don't let this put you off. Stick at it and you'll be fine. Oh, and if you have your own boxing gloves that would be better than borrowing the ones from the academy (they're unlikely to have gloves to borrow these days anyway due to covid). You don't ned to buy the most expensive to start with, just basic gloves will do. But most of all just have fun and try not get too competitive. Goof luck and let me know how it goes 🙂👊🥊💥
@@eventhorizon7234 hey, well done for signing up to your first Thai boxing class. I'm sure you'll have great fun 🙂. Regarding glove size it really depends on your size and weight. The bigger and heavier someone is then they'll need bigger gloves, but for somebody weighing less than 126 pounds they should probably go for 10oz, 12oz or 14oz gloves. I think typically if you weigh between 90- 120lbs and are 5'5"-6'6" tall then a 12oz glove may be best. Good luck and let me know how you get on 🙂👍🏻
@@eventhorizon7234 go be honest I think I'd probably go for 12oz if I was you. That way they should be suitable for pad work , bag work and any light sparring (some gyms won't let you spar of your gloves are below 12oz)
@@johnnyboykickboxer8302 Hey! Is there a difference between boxing gloves and kickboxing gloves? What size should I get? I’m 108 lbs and 5’0. I’m looking at a 12oz but I’m not too sure.
@@eventhorizon7234 hey mate, sorry to hear that your first class didn't go as expected. Hang on in there though, it may get better. Often if people are training kickboxing for the first time they'll likely only be shown the basics to start with such as the forest stance, footwork, and the basics of punching. Then after a while they'll move onto basic kicks, followed by more advanced things such as hook, uppercut, elbows, knees etc. The academy I go to also focus more on basic boxing techniques to start with, and then they'll move onto different styles of kickboxing including Thai, Savage, JKD etc. I know it can be frustrating when you're wanting to jump straight in but the instructor is insisting on only teaching you the basics to begin with, but try not get too disheartened. He's right in one way that basic boxing techniques will be very similar across the board to start with, and then you'll adapt and tweak those basic techniques slightly to suit muay thai. Learning martial arts is a long journey, so don't be put off if it feels as though the instructor is taking things slow for the first few weeks. Give it a few more classes and see how it goes - he may teach the kicks over the next few lessons at some point 🙂👍🏻
I want to start kickboxing. I am 16 and I don’t have fighting experience. I don’t know how to start because I think everyone there will be good and I’ll be shit
Hey there, great to hear that you're thinking of taking up kickboxing. Its good fun and a great way to keep fit 🙂 Don't worry about having no experience and being a bit shit to start with. I was exactly the same when I first started. I didn't know how to throw a punch properly, or the correct stance or anything. And to be honest everyone who first starts kickboxing will be the same. The instructor and your peers will understand that you're new to the sport, and they won't expect too much from you until you learn the new skills. It all takes time and practice - a lot of it! Try and find somewhere that offers beginner classes and they will start from the bottom so you can learn the correct stance for kickboxing, and how to throw basic punches correctly, then how to throw basic kicks correctly. Try not to get disheartened if things don't happen quickly (it took me years, and I still have my bad moments where I feel like I'm a bit shit, lol 😅) Good luck and let me know how you get on 🙂 🥊👊🏻💥

Hey, well done for deciding to take up kickboxing. It really is a great way to keep fit. It really doesn't matter if you're slightly overweight, lots of people decide to take up kickboxing to help lose weight, including myself 🙂. The only tips I can think of its just go with the flow and don't talk yourself out of it. I think the fact that you're already doing yoga and light exercise is a great start. Your instructor at kickboxing will know the level of fitness that you're at, and although he/she will undoubtedly push you hard, as a beginner it's unlikely they'll ask you to do anything too technical. Just stick with it! We all occasionally feel like quiting if we think it's too much, and some days we really don't feel like exercising. I'm not gonna lie - kickboxing training can be gruelling at times, but you gotta be strong and push yourself through it. You'll feel a real sense of achievement afterwards and you'll be glad you did it. Just keep up the exercises regularly. I exercise most days for up to one hour, but it's also important to have rest days. The weekend is usually my rest days from kickboxing, but I'll usually do something else lighter such as walking or cycling. Good luck! Go got this and I'm sure you'll enjoy it 🙂👍🏻
You don't need preparation because at the beginning you'll do very little sparring/fighting but you will do a lot of athletic preparation so you'll get in shape in the process. If you really want to do something, go for a run every day (ideallly) or every second day and start to increase your time by 5 minutes every 1 or 2 weeks until you'll reach your limit. It doesn't matter how far or fast you run, you just need to be able to keep running without stopping. Having said that, no offense, but if you want to do competitions, you're already a bit old to start so if I were you, I wouldn't think too much about it, just start. It would be way more fun than just running alone.
@@johnnyboykickboxer8302 Hey Thanks alot. I'll surely start kickboxing. Unable to do so right now cause I'm constantly traveling due to business. I usually don't wait for motivation, i just go for it as a necessity. But this surely was zestful. Wish me luck♥️

@Treyton Prafke wow! That's fantastic! I'm so pleased you enjoyed it! Well done 😃👍🏻. How old are you? I did kickboxing for almost 10 years, I got my black belt and an instructor diploma before I had to quit. Now I'm 32 and my body is not the same anymore, I don't have flexibility or stamina and though I have the technique in my mind, my body doesn't follow it but I would like to start again (that or something else like jiu jitsu or judo), just for fun, so I'm looking for experiences of people who started late.
I'm 42 so my body is definitely not as flexible as it once was, lol! 😂 I do it purely for the the physical and mental exercise. I occasionally train Kali as I find it has a broader range of different styles of fighting and defence including Muay Thai, Savate, Panantukan, JKD etc. I did try BJJ for a while but ended up taking a break due to injury - and now I keep putting off going back! Hah ha! 😂 I will go back to BJJ and give it another try some day as it is fun, but to be honest I do prefer kickboxing 🙂
Hey there, sure I'll try and get around to doing a video on that sometime 🙂👍🏻. Things have been crazy busy lately so I've not been able to do any videos for a while
Yes some gyms can be quite expensive, but those prices are usually for unlimited classes. There may be some gyms that allow you limited classes or pay per class - £5 per class for example so that you could go 2 classes per week. Although I would recommend more than 2 classes per week, 2 is better than nothing - it just means it'll take longer to learn the different techniques. If that isn't an option or is still too expensive, then there are plenty of online videos and tutorials for free. Obviously this won't be as good as attending physical classes and practicing with a partner, but again, it's better than nothing. When I first started learning kickboxing I trained along to online videos to learn some of the basics, but I quickly realised that I would have to sign up to physical classes to really learn the martial art. I found an academy that offered a month trial at a discounted price of £25, then £50 per month membership thereafter. Basically I had to make some changes to other areas in my lifestyle to afford the monthly membership, including going for fewer nights out etc. But it was totally worth it. Good luck and I hope you're able to find an affordable gym soon 🙂🥊👊🏻💥
What’s up man great video I’m thinking of signing up for kickboxing I normally do bjj I’m a heavyweight weighing 230 what do u suggest me getting in shape before starting or just going for it ?
Hey mate, glad you liked the video. Amd great to hear that you're thinking of trying out kickboxing. I also tried BJJ for a while, but then decided kickboxing was more my thing. I would say there's no need to get in shape before starting kickboxing, as the you'll likely start off doing beginner stuff to start with if you've never done it before, and the training itself will get you in shape. That's actually one of the main reasons I started kickboxing 5 years ago, to get into shape. Go for it! You'll enjoy it! Let me know how it goes 🙂🥊👊🏻
I would say it definitely could save your life in a serious situation. You may not do any of the fancy stuff, but even the basic techniques could be excellent at self defence. Obviously if there was something to use as a weapon nearby (a pole, a baseball bat etc) you would likely pick that up and use it as the first option in a self defence situation, but if there was nothing nearby to use as a weapon, then being able to use your arms, legs, knees, and elbows as weapons could potentially save your life 🙂
i have been wanting to start kickboxing since long before all the covid-19 thing going on. i had past trauma-ish experiences with courses and sessions, so i was really not sure and just kept thinking about it. never really attempted. i still want to do it, but obviously; i can't go and sign for an academy anymore. so i was wondering if i could do anything to start at home...
Hey, sorry to hear about tour previous bad experience with courses. It's completely understandable that would potentially put anybody off from wanting to give things another try. Hopefully you'll give kickboxing a go and realise that you'll love it and that tou can't get enough of it 😁 Yeah things suck at the moment as gyms and kickboxing academies are either still closed due to the pandemic, or a lot aren't currently taking new students. But in the meantime I would take this opportunity to work through some basic kickboxing tutorials on UA-cam. Nothing too advanced as we need to learn to walk before we can run, so just some basic things such as the correct stance, how to throw a jab, cross, hook, uppercut, and how to do some of the basic kicks. There's little point in just watching the videos though - so actively learn from the videos by getting up and following along by doing some basic shadow boxing. This way when academies to start reopening fully you'll have some basic knowledge of what it is you'll be learning. Hope this helps and good luck 🙂🥊👊🏻💥

To be honest I'm not a professional by any stretch of the imagination, haha 😂 It really depends on each person as everyone's body is different. I used to regularly go for a run early in the morning and then do an hour kickboxing session on the evening (sometimes an hour BJJ or MKG right after kickboxing too). That worked for me, but only once I gradually built up to that - and I always take two days a week off to relax and give my chance to recover. Hey mate, I'm so pleased you're considering taking up kickboxing 🙂👊🏻🥊💥. It's such a shame that you can't start until you're 18. Some gyms/academies offer classes for under 18s, so I'm not sure if that's something that is available in your area 🤔. Other than that, the best thing would be to learn the absolute basics by watching UA-cam tutorials. Learn things such as the correct stance, footwork, and the terminology of the different of the different punches etc (1 for jab, 2 for cross etc). Dont do anything fancy, just practice these basics first and then when you do start your training when you turn 18, you'll have a good understanding of these fundamental basics. Good luck and let me know how it goes 🙂
Hey there, its great to hear that you're thinking of taking up kickboxing. It really is a great way to get fit. There's no professional kickboxing. It died in the '80s. K1 died like 10 years ago or so. Other similar things only offer semi-professional paths. Not a chance to become an Olympic discipline because there are too many small organizations appearing like mushrooms every day that are not officially recognized by any Olympic environment. Today the only fighting sports where you can go professional are boxe or MMA (sadly). Be aware that you're barely in time. Before you'll become good enough to think about semi-professional fights it takes many years a by that time you'll be over your 20s and sport careers usually end around your 30s so you don't have much time.

I just today completed my first ever kickboxing class at the age of 35!… I was very nervous at first as I didn’t know anyone but once I got through the door everyone was very welcoming and friendly my anxiety started to fade and I felt like I known everyone for years!… the community is very supportive. It’s just a case of getting through the door I promise you, you won’t regret it. I plan on continuing this hobby as I find it really fun as there is NO age limit or fitness restrictions to this discipline.

Thanks for the video!! Truly helpful!! And a happy New year!! Considering to start KB but I am scared of the injuries. I am 32 y.o. with no experience in fighting sports. For my age the recovery would be difficult both for my body and the stuff I do outside sports like work-family-friends...
Hey there, glad you liked my video. I'm glad to hear that you're considering starting kickboxing 🙂
Yeah injuries can be a concern, and I'm not going to lie - you will get injured at some point when taking part in any contact sport.
Good luck! 🙂👍🏻
My mom's helping me start classes for this, I'm a self-taught developer and I've never really pursued my hobbies irl outside of going to concerts. Going on benders gets stale really fast too. That’s awesome bulb. I’m 15 and I’m looking into kickboxing. I don’t know a single thing about it but I have done other sports. Could you tell me what your first class is like?
Good luck, I'm sure you enjoy it, and well done for plucking up the courage to start 🙂👍🏻

Glad you liked the video. And yeah it's definitely best to leave the ego. I learned quickly that there'll always be somebody better as some of these guys have been training for years, lol 😆. I really like the the honest advice
You just need to figure out how to minimise it 🙂👊🏻
Proud of you!
thanks ☺
I’m starting kickboxing and BJJ when gyms open back up. Is there anything else I should expect or be aware of before starting. Great video Btw🙂
Its good fun and a great way to keep fit 🙂
Don't worry about having no experience and being a bit shit to start with.
Try not to get disheartened if things don't happen quickly (it took me years, and I still have my bad moments where I feel like I'm a bit shit, lol 😅)
Good luck and let me know how you get on 🙂 🥊👊🏻💥

I'm 24, slightly overweight. I do light workouts and yoga. Can you share some tips for me to get myself ready for kickboxing....thanks in advance

Do you have to do flexibility training???
We always take time to do flexibility before and after each session. Flexibility is something what will increase over time 🙂
JohnnyBoy Kickboxer Thanks for the information.
I don’t suppose you could do a video explaining points sparring? Unless this is on one of your videos already (apologies if it is!)
Hey there, sure I'll try and get around to doing a video on that sometime 🙂👍🏻. Things have been crazy busy lately so I've not been able to do any videos for a while
@@johnnyboykickboxer8302 no worries :) thank you 😊
I wish I could start but my gyms are extremely high priced... 70 a month for a student is .. Hui
Good luck and I hope you're able to find an affordable gym soon

Hell yeah thanks for the reply I’ll keep u posted bro thanks !
I just have a question, Can Kickboxing really save your life in a series situation?
I would say it definitely could save your life in a serious situation. You may not do any of the fancy stuff, but even the basic techniques could be excellent at self defence. Obviously if there was something to use as a weapon nearby (a pole, a baseball bat etc) you would likely pick that up and use it as the first option in a self defence situation, but if there was nothing nearby to use as a weapon, then being able to use your arms, legs, knees, and elbows as weapons could potentially save your life 🙂

i still want to do it, but obviously; i can't go and sign for an academy anymore. so i was wondering if i could do anything to start at home...
Hey, sorry to hear about tour previous bad experience with courses. It's completely understandable that would potentially put anybody off from wanting to give things another try. Hopefully you'll give kickboxing a go and realise that you'll love it and that tou can't get enough of it 😁
Yeah things suck at the moment as gyms and kickboxing academies are either still closed due to the pandemic, or a lot aren't currently taking new students.

To be honest I'm not a professional by any stretch of the imagination, haha 😂
It really depends on each person as everyone's body is different. I used to regularly go for a run early in the morning and then do an hour kickboxing session on the evening (sometimes an hour BJJ or MKG right after kickboxing too). That worked for me, but only once I gradually built up to that - and I always take two days a week off to relax and give my chance to recover. Learn things such as the correct stance, footwork, and the terminology of the different of the different punches etc (1 for jab, 2 for cross etc). That's great that you've taken the plunge and booked your first class! Well done 😃
Of course you're nervous, it's only natural to feel like that when you're about to try something new. But once you're there and you're getting into the swing of it all of your anxiety will disappear and you'll realise there was nothing to be worried about. It will be hard work though as you'll be using a load of different muscles that you wouldn't normally use in regular gym workouts, but it'll be totally worth it! The instructor will know that you're new and won't be expecting you to do any crazy techniques, so don't be surprised if you don't do any actual kicking or sparring at your first class. It'll likely be more focused on the correct stance amd basic techniques.
