  • HP Umpire Jeremy Riggs ejected Guardians SS Gabriel Arias for arguing strike calls in the 9th inning after striking out. Also, the on-screen strike zone graphic box jumped around during the pitch, so there's that. Report: www.closecallsports.com/2024/...

      100%. Ive said for a while now that when they institute the challenge system it's going to open alot of eyeballs to the boxes fans see on TV as well as players being forced to take some accountability for their own at bats.

      @@brendonneely9456 Sorry...agree to disagree. If they institute the robo-umps in MLB then a player or coach who argues with the on-field umpires about a call the robo-umps have made should be an immediate ejection. A coach or player's inability to accept the ruling of the computer (which they all say they want...) is no excuse to then verbally abuse the human umpires. But, you make a great point and MLB will likely allow players and coaches to do just that because MLB is no longer in the competitive baseball business. They are in the entertainment business like WWE and there's nothing fans love more than to see their players and coaches verbally abusing the umpires...

      Honestly thought the announcers did an ok job here. They didn't say the pitch was a ball, they said the batter/manager thought it was a ball. They criticized him for getting thrown out of the game instead of controlling his emotions. I don't like the "weak sauce" comment but this is way better than 90% of the commentary we usually hear when there's an ejection.

      Stop applying amateur standards to the pros. Pro umpires hear profanity regularly, and their language isn't pristine. There was no yelling, throwing equipment, or getting in the umpire's face.

    • @ericwildfong
      @ericwildfong 6 днів тому +6

      @@roberthudson1959 Even the pro standards limit what can be said directly to the umpire. Just cause there's a looser leash on profanity compared to younger levels, it still can't be personal. Also we don't know if he was saying anything to the umpire during the at bat which could push it into the realm of prolonged, same with referencing an earlier pitch

    How does the announcer know it was "weak sauce" to throw him out? Every time a batter is thrown out in a situation like this, there is his broadcasting team backing him up and using some version of saying that was "weak sauce" by the umpire? Prolonged, personal, and or profane is the standard for an ejection. It doesn't matter if a player or coach is walking away from the umpire when they say it. If the umpire hears something that meets that criteria, by rule, they must eject them. I do like the OTHER broadcaster's narrative here of, "...you can't get thrown out here in a situation like this." Until you know for sure what EXACTLY the ejected person said, you cannot draw any conclusions whatsoever.

  • @rc24caldwell19
    @rc24caldwell19 5 днів тому +1

    You don't often hear situations like that....where the broadcast crew features one reasonable person who sees what actually happened here, and one homer who wants to heap the blame somewhere else (when every call was correct....and he cannot possibly know what the batter said...hey bud, if the dude turned and quietly told the ump his mother was a $&@%#$! #%@$*&, was that ejection still "weak sauce?")

      RoboUmp is never wrong. If you don't believe me, just check the RoboUmp data, and you'll see that it is never wrong. It is not necessary for someone to watch the watchers. RoboUmp will watch that, too.

    • @ericwildfong
      @ericwildfong 6 днів тому +4

      The TV computer needs to cut corners to achieve "real time" speed, such as using fewer significant digits and doesn't have the benefit of having the inputs double or triple checked by operators like post game processing would have. It's kind of similar to umpires and not having access to video replay, they need to call it in real time. The reality is though, the pitch tracking numbers do drift, which is why there's a margin of error. Also known as the tolerance in variations of the equipment output. If the ball is at (X1, Y1) but the tracking equipment spits out (X2, Y2) it's considered to be an accurate position so long as X2 and Y2 differ from X1 and Y1 by no more than the margin of error or the equipment's tolerance
