I'm new here, been working with diesels for about 20 years. First guess would be an injector stuck open or partially open but I don't deal with marine applications. Based off the smoke and extra fuel consumption. Good luck
Get a thermal laser probe, warm up the engine, and check the temp of the each exhaust port where it meets the manifold and look for an abnormally cold cylinder... that would be your bad injector. This saves me tons of time guessing what injector to try first. I don't think it's a head gasket with no signs water in the oil or excessive pressure in the coolant system, plus if it were coolant you were burning you would smell it out of the exhaust. I'm almost positive you have 2 bad injectors by the sound of your engine. Cheers from New Brunswick.
@@SearchingforCShels you're welcome, I guess I should have mentioned if you find 2 cool cylinders side by side... you can't fully rule out a head gasket, but going back to your port engine issues, it's not the same symptoms.

Hi Guys, Thanks for the cameo. It was great seeing you at FLIBS. I'm retiring in 3 weeks!! Hope to get out on the water and catch up with you soon. Hope all is well, Paul
Congrats on your dinghy. I have a similar davit for a much lighter 10 foot aluminum AB dinghy with 6HP outboard. Fueled and a few items loaded and ready to go it weights about 150 Lbs. I have a 4 to 1 block and tackle set up and it’s still a bit difficult/heavy to retrieve. I may change the blocks to a ratchet style so that I can pull a foot or so at a time, relax, re-grip and and pull again. I also had 3 cables with eyelets and karabiners for a quick connect/disconnect. Thanks again for your videos and enjoy your adventures.
Love your videos and can't wait for the next one. We have done some cruising as well but only for 1 to 2 month periods. We hope to see you in Bahamas this year and are working on plans, but are having a problem finding insurance coverage, any ideas who is writing coverage during hurricane season in the Bahamas?
I’m jealous of your adventures ! I had planned to do the same 20 years ago bought my 44’ boat they had to have several surgeries that set me back about ten years. Still have the boat but my budget for the adventure is gone to medical.
We made it to South Florida would love to catch up with you guys! Hope you get your mechanical issues sorted. Ours did almost the same thing but ours was a stuck turbo.
had a motor before (not a diesel, but I assume at least this issue could be the same for gas or diesel) but it had a clogged injector line (injector checked out fine) but the supply line to it was clogged with gunk... causing a lean condition, and showing itself with puffy white smoke like yours is. it ultimately led to a burned hole in top of one of the pistons, and complete loss of power due to it and high crank case pressure and even more white smoke... Hopefully you've figured out your issue by now and it was an easy one! love the videos!!
Please keep us posted on that engine! My first thing on the checklist would be a stuck open injector? Question is, which one? Anyways....awesome you're back and can't wait to hear the outcomes...great learning right here!!!
White smoke from a cold diesel can only be unburned fuel. Crack each fuel line in turn until you hear a change, that will be your culprit if it's an injector(s). Assuming your coolant level is not changing. Extra fuel consumption means the firing cylinders have to make up for the power lost from the cylinder(s) which are not firing. Unlike a gasoline engine, when you set the throttle position on a diesel, you are not limiting air intake. You are commanding a set engine speed in RPM, and the fuel rack will increase fuel until that speed of engine condition is met. GOOD Luck!

Hi, you two! Watch your videos although not up to date. Hope you get it resolved. Watching your trouble shooting with interest. Hello there ! Don’t know if you solve the engine issue ! Something similar happened to one of my farm tractor, it was a broke spring on a valve rocker ! Simple fix by lifting the valve cover and you see if something broke !
I agree with Mark. Sounds like a Head Gasket issue Sheldon. Check your Antifreeze level also. White smoke is a good indication. Good Luck. Hope everything works out for you guys.
@@SearchingforCShels I was leaning towards stuck injector until I read your comment here. That tilts the needle to head gasket. I use a FLIR E5-XT infrared camera to troubleshoot my engines before and during most every run. It make it so easier to find fuel and water related problems. You can even detect a battery going bad before it completely dies (it will show up hotter than the rest in a bank). Very handy tool to have onboard. Did you ever figure out the issue? In Bimini there aren't any quality mechanics there I would trust to give you a accurate answer to the Problem. It stinks this happened in the Bahamas. Hopefully you have sorted the Caterpillar by now. We were on the Leopard 47 Catamaran SEAFLO just a few spots over when you guys pulled into Bimini Cove.
That starboard engine might have (and I hope not) a head gasket issue. When you said the exhaust was white-ish in colour, that's often the tell tale sign. But I hope it's something simple for you. Good luck. P.S. I like your new dighy!
@@SearchingforCShels injectors stuck open can do white smoke. If your lucky change them out before running the engine. Don't want to load up the cylinders with fuel and destroy them. The worst you can do is spend some time swapping.
@@SearchingforCShels did you say you heard huffing? Was that from the turbo? Could be headgasket. Sorry. Can ask the question for you on Boatdiesel if you don't have your membership anymore
Because of the high RPM overheating, I was thinking head gasket too, but I didn't want to scare you. I was also thinking it may be something simple, like excess oil getting in there. If it is, the fix is usually much easier and cheaper. You'll just have to find the directions for your engine to replace all the seals. Seals and gaskets go bad when they're sitting for long periods of time. Good luck.
Are your cats the turbo versions? If thet are, i would check the turbo. White/grey smoke is usually a turbo going out. I had a turbo go out on my cummins. Lots if white smoke, high temps. Good luck, and welcome back. An injector issue would be black smoke. If its a head gasket, you would smell coolant in the exahust. You can also take off your rad cap and watch the coolant level. If its surging up and down, its a head gasket bleeding pressure into your cooling system.
Thanks for this. Yes, they have turbos. Would the turbo going out manifest at idle or not in gear? We looked at the turbo before we left and it was free and clear. No surging or bubbling in the coolant.
@@SearchingforCShels if they are just going out, the only thing you might see just smoke, and heat. As they get worse, more smoke, loss of power, and excessive turbo whine. There are good vids for testing the turbo without removal on youtube. Before i started replacing injectors, i would test the turbo and the wastegate. If they check out, put pressure to the coolant tank with a pressure tester to see if it holds. If those simple tests hold, move to injectors and pump. I read that injector/ injector timing can cause white smoke too.
We were thinking about it. However, we had one for the last dinghy and it would never stay on. Given the dinghy hangs off the stern you can never get it on properly on the side of the dinghy that is furthest off the stern.
You got the exact dinghy setup I have been looking at . A Highfield rib and the dinghy caddy. Which model Highfield did you get ? I have a Grand Banks 42 Classic and my swim platform is around 12.5’ wide. Have you been using the dinghy caddy on your boat for a while and how do you like it? Glad to see you back in the Bahamas.
We have the Highfield Classic 340 GT. The GT is the new model with the fiberglass console. We do like the simplicity of the dinghy caddy. Though we needed to modify it to support the increased weight of this dinghy. We also installed an electric winch so we don't have to lift it anymore. Will show the mods to the dinghy caddy in an upcoming video, but essentially we put some supports/gussets on the U portion of the davit.
Hey dudes, if you don't find the problem with fuel, whitish grey smoke says to me a compression problem. Many reasons for that, turbocharger, head gasket , piston rings, valves etc. Compression test her Sheldon. Did you look at the heat exchangers? She may just have a valve not closing properly. Take the covers off and go though the valves like a lash adjustment, a slack one might tell you something. Sheldon, I urge you to get a stethoscope, a great tool for pin pointing and listening to those noise's that you hear. They are so good, you can near see the noise through your ears. A pair live in my tool box, have done since I was 15 and I got my first car, thanks to my best mate diesel mechanic. Good luck my friends, I hope the heads don't have to come off. Fair seas C-shel. Ps, don't get too thin Cindy.
Thanks Barry, you are always so helpful. It will be hard to compression test here in the Bahamas. Looked at the vales. They seem fine. The stethoscope is a good idea, I will get one when we return to FL. Cheers my friend.
Yeah, I thought the head gasket issues with the 3208s were with the 435hp versions. That is not seemingly the case. We lost about half of what was in the expansion bottle when we went on plane. Otherwise coolant loss is not noticeable. No bubbling.
It is a dinghy caddy. Original weight limit was 400 lbs. I’ve made modifications to it by working with the manufacturer to increase that by 100+ lbs. this new dinghy only weighs 50-75 lbs more than our old dinghy.
Those turbo charged engines do not like to run at low RPM's because it makes them run little hotter. I would say you have the same problem as your port engine had a couple of years ago Head Gasket
I suspect you might be right about the head gasket. I have always thought they don't like running at low rpms because they don't get up to proper operating temperature internally to seal the rings and such. This is why we've always tried after every 4-8 hours of low rpm running, to put her up on plane for 15-20 minutes.
black smoke, not grey? run engine, pull dip stick, wipe it on a paper towel then drag over a magnet. any metal shavings on magnet? Is the dipstick brown, foamy or watery? no... probably not head gasket. Sounds like piston slap, pull oil pump and open, is the rubber impeller intact or is it missing any fins? Common problem... impeller shreds and bits get into block, over heating, lower power etc. many times people replace pumps without looking at damage on old one. I had same problem. Had to replace 2 cylendar sleeves. Don't freak out just yet. First... pull water pump, and insect impeller, any fins missing or damaged? check cooling system, back flush your exhaust system and flush. change water pump. hope this works and it is not too late.
Have you pulled the valve cover off and inspected lifters, etc? I am sure you know this trick,,, Take a big screwdriver, put handle to ear and hold against various areas of engine. This will tell you where the noise is. (Mechanics Stethoscope) Good luck. Keep the posts comming. Fyi. I live just north of Victoria BC. Best cruising in the NW. .
Have you pulled the valve cover off and inspected the lifters etc? Take a big screwdriver, put handle against ear, touch other end against various areas of engine. This will tell you where the noise is coming from. (Mechanics Stethoscope).
Actually the original dinghy caddy is rated for 400 lbs. I’ve made modifications to it by working with the manufacturer to increase that by 100+ lbs. this new dinghy only weighs 50-75 lbs more than our old dinghy.
Not so. The dinghy caddy was rated at 400 lbs. Once up the transom shares the weight with the swim deck. This new dinghy is only 50-75 lbs more than the old one, and I’ve modified the davit to take another 100+ lbs.
The turbo seems to be fine. The turbo didn't even kick in since we left Stuart FL, until of course when I tried to blow it out that morning by going on plane.

Yeah, I thought the head gasket issues with the 3208s were with the 435hp versions. That is not seemingly the case.
We lost about half of what was in the expansion bottle when we went on plane. Otherwise coolant loss is not noticeable. No bubbling.
What David system are you using? What weight does it hold?
It is a dinghy caddy. Original weight limit was 400 lbs. I’ve made modifications to it by working with the manufacturer to increase that by 100+ lbs. this new dinghy only weighs 50-75 lbs more than our old dinghy.
@@SearchingforCShels thanks for the quick reply, we bought a Brig and it’s heavier,, specs say 600 lbs. we have an olderCarver 3607.
Are you happy with the AirSeps?
We are so far. Not a ton of hours since installation.
Good to see you back. Let’s hope the engine glitch is a relatively minor issue.
We hope so too.
Sound like one of the injectors is sucking air
Turbo ?
If that’s a heui injection, try hot shots secrets stiction eliminator in oil..
Not a Heui.
Sounds like a blown head gasket !
Appreciate the opinion.
Sounds like dirty injectors and or the pump assembly
Thanks.
To answer your question. Yes you are, if you think you are.
At times we think we are all three. 😂
What is “ Work, Work “ ?
lol, it is our daily jobs that we make money from.
black smoke, not grey? run engine, pull dip stick, wipe it on a paper towel then drag over a magnet. any metal shavings on magnet?
Thanks for the tips Tory. The smoke is more white/grey, not black. Oil seems normal, but haven't done the magnet trick yet.
Best cruising in the NW.
.

You guy's handly the storm well you have become a couble of old sea dogs
lol, thanks.
Your davit is too small for that heavy Highfield... similar Olsson davit is only rated for 270 LBS
Actually the original dinghy caddy is rated for 400 lbs. I’ve made modifications to it by working with the manufacturer to increase that by 100+ lbs. this new dinghy only weighs 50-75 lbs more than our old dinghy.
"You need to get back in the office." Yeah, so what are you doing to contribute to making that Fleming happen?
I would be more concerned with that huge tender pulling the transom off that tollycraft.
Not so. The dinghy caddy was rated at 400 lbs. Once up the transom shares the weight with the swim deck. This new dinghy is only 50-75 lbs more than the old one, and I’ve modified the davit to take another 100+ lbs.
Grey white smoke. More fuel consumption... The other engine is taking most of the working load.... Your engine turbo has gone to shit.
The turbo seems to be fine. The turbo didn't even kick in since we left Stuart FL, until of course when I tried to blow it out that morning by going on plane.
:)!!! YT ranking services - P-R-O-M-O-S-M !!
You can’t even sail!
We are boaters and have been watching you guys since 2020 . We like your videos in the Bahamas , except you always refer to the gentleman workers as guys . You ask us to be respectful perhaps you should do the same .
Hi Michael. We are a little confused here. What is disrespectful about calling them guys? We mean no disrespect.
Wow you both do not seem like people who would respond this way !! The gentleman at the restaurant look over 50 years old also the other gentleman in the white shirt . We’re you not taught to respect your elders ? no matter who they are.
You must be reading something into our comment that we are not intending. It was an honest question. We want to understand your point. Can you explain? Where is this restaurant you are talking about? We didn't go to a restaurant in this video. We respect everyone, regardless of age. What did we do that was so disrespectful?
Welcome back!
