Small update... I've been a little quiet here as I relocated my music school to a bigger place on the Gold Coast last year and built this new filming and recording studio 🤘🏻 This video was recorded as part of my schools UA-cam channel 'teacher cover videos' and thought I would share it with you guys here as well cause this song fucking rules. Tower of Power and David Garibaldi have been a massive part of my music influences growing up so felt fitting to cover this song. His linear approach has always been unique! The kit I'm playing here is Pearl's Decade Maple drums that they loaned me (reason for having stock heads). I did a video on this kit here:

I honestly don’t know what’s more impressive David Garibaldi on the original, or are you being able to play every fucking note that someone else played perfectly in time to dissect every single thing and play it with the same exact feel and energy and originality like 40 something years later
Troy has mastered the drums. I've watched him off and on for many years. The saddest part is that the channel hasn't reached millions of subscribers because it's well deserved. Quality content, amazing performance, and a lot of fantastic covers choices. Wishing you the best Troy.

I would argue that this is essentially “What is Hip”.... just with a different title.
'Squib Cakes' by TOP also had some killer drums, to go alongside the trademark horns. Maybe he can try that next?

Excellent redition sir. Thanks for the upload and it's exactly what I was looking for. I will be studying and practicing this groove from your video. Yes, Girabaldi was, not sure what's he's doing now, a funk drumming legend back in the 70's and 80's. I commend you for keeping his legacy alive and well deserved respect to him.

I love how balanced Sabians pro lines are. And they ALL compliment each other. No matter what you mix and match lol He has a bright brilliant crash and it still works with the darker trashier stuff like the legacies and hhx’s. Thats why I like Sabian so much.

FanaticalDrummer I noticed the same thing! They are nice and bright and clean. It’s very refreshing after so many videos of the Meinl trashcan sound. I was pretty bummed when Louis Palmer went to Meinl from Sabian. I thought his cymbals were fantastic before the switch.
The Solopreneur Hour Podcast with Michael O'Neal Even Sabians darker trashier sets like the Complex, Artisan, HHX and Legacy still retain a musical character. Not obnoxiously dry and airy. Even the new AAX Thin crashes have a great sound. Its right between dark and bright. Hard to explain but they sound great thrown in with dark cymbals.
