Garibaldi is one of those drummers that you get to know after a year or two and after I while you're like, okay I get it. And then you start checking out fusion cats and chops etc. And the after a few more years you come back to Garibaldi and then looking at him with more knowledge and you realize how deep he actually goes. Had major donny Kruger with him. Also choosing your favorite Garibaldi groove is like picking your favorite out of your kids.

My background was Steppenwolf, Hendrix, Santana Buckinghams, Chicago Transit Authority when a freind turned me on to the Back to Oakland album. I was floored! Studying Davids style and stealing licks grew me as a drummer exponentially. Hell even learning it wrong then correcting it improved my playing and chops. I get it. I didnt always get it but once you start dissecting enough of his beats you have to get in his head and think backwards to pull it off. Once you get Soul vaccinated you dont ever completely go back.

Bravo Stephen. Been a study of DG since 1973, a freind since 2007. Tower of Power is a familiar well I go to for thirst quenching and nourishment. Squib Cakes and Soul Vaccination are naturally among the top tier grooves. As a deep study I like the less obvious yet tasty paradiddle groove on Down to the night Club. The intro to Cant You See. Ending of Get Yo Feet Back on the Ground. Dont Change Horses. You Strike My Main Nerve. Still Diggin on James Brown. AND the stuff he plays on Just When We Start Making It is gold! Thanks for posting.

Future Sounds was my bible in college. My band director had us do Soul Vaccination one semester. The countless hours I spent shedding that one. Garibaldi is the epitome of technique melding with feel. Thanks for putting up this video!

Another amazing feat Stephen! I personally really appreciate that you let us know the beat is not easy, even for someone as accomplished and studied as yourself. Seriously, I can see someone just giving up on the drums all-together because they can't do a particular beat and believe if they were a good drummer, they could. Good to know!
I see you have some fancy Zildjian cymbals that say, "Sound Lab Prototype". Sound good.

Absolutely Outstanding! It is very helpful that you identify the loopable part of the groove. Thanks for admitting that some grooves are much more difficult at 130 BPM than at 120 BPM. Now, I know that I am not the only drummer who faces this problem with some grooves. I have only learned one other Garibaldi groove. I am excited to learn three more.

Though I think it's really helpful you offered that 'reality check' @14:45, I did feel a little disappointed with the brief fragment that followed. Somehow it made me expect (though you didn't promise that, literally) you would show excerpts of your own progress, including some struggle with cleanliness, while practising at 90, 100, 110, 120 BPM. Yes, like you mention, it would actually be quite helpful to see what 'error' emerges and then how you would deal with addressing that. And thanks for picking three beats I've been wanting to play for 20y, of course!

I've watched a few of these videos where you break down a complex beat like this. It's a sensible and valid way to tackle such complexity but such stroke by stroke analysis tends to obscure the overall character of the thing. Perhaps an overview of the combined hand patterns and the same for the feet might be helpful, to better convey the rhythms and coordination involved?
Good job though! I couldn't play any of those beats cleanly for more than a measure! It's like trying to grab a soapy eel in a bucket of oil.

Nice try in explaining David's techniques. It's almost impossible to be able to lay down David's Beats, without his smooth ability in musical patterns that are all relate to the horn structure, if you have not figured that out yet, you drummers he plays on a different level than you and me. I've been trying to understand and diagnosis playing his techniques since 1969, his music is so fun to play, just remember be yourself like Dave says, you can get close but that's it, keep drumming.😌
