I remember both Adam West and Burt Ward making an appearance at a newly opened Big Bear grocery store in Columbus, Ohio in the early to mid 80s. They were signing autographs so I stood in line for about 2 hours hoping for an autograph. I had brought with me a Batman T-shirt to be signed. Just I got within 3 people to meeting them, a voice came over the PA saying "Adam West and Burt Ward has stopped giving autographs". Loudly I made a point that I had driven over 100 miles, and stood in line over 2 hours hoping to get an autograph.
Adam West heard what I said and told me to give him the shirt. He signed the T-shirt and then passed it to Burt Ward to sign. After over 35 years I still own that shirt and will always cherish it over many other autographs I have.

I remember getting an autograph on a picture way back when. Adam West was awesome but Burt Ward was stuffing his face with popcorn and even though he was signing autographs his demeanor was so dismissive. Made a huge impact on me as a kid and how I viewed him. Probably 45 years later, give or take and I remember it vividly.

@Ron Rossmore "...Celebrities like the one you just described are a dime a dozen..." - A totally unnecessary remark. Irregardless of how "stratospheric" they may or not have become they still managed to catch lightning in a bottle whereas I've NEVER heard of your name until I read it just now. Think about it...LASSIE is more famous than you are.

    • @manganights

@Ron Rossmore I wasn’t bragging about meeting him, just saying he was a genuinely nice guy. Most celebrities I’ve met were nice though I’ve see jerks also. I met Natalie Wood (very sweet) shortly before her death, though Robert Wagner was unpleasant. Paul Newman was a great guy. Dan Fogelberg was one of my favorites and stayed in touch afterwards until he passed away. You mentioned Cher and I met her in 1974. She was charming and I liked her a lot. Sonny Bono was not pleasant to her. Yelling and carrying on. I’ve gotten to know hundreds of celebrities over the years and some stand out much more than others with their kindness and personality. I had no desire to “brag” about meeting Burt Ward. Just making a comment based on experience.

    I'm gobsmacked.
As a child of the 60s and 70s, the Batman TV series played a huge part in my afternoon life. It was a brilliant show. It still brings joy to me in adulthood because a lot of the innuendo and jokes were directed toward adults. Much like many modern-day cartoon series.
I never really followed the lives of the actors but always had respect for them. Knowing that Burt and his family have rehomed over 14000 dogs AND developed a nutritional pet food fills me with joy. How frikking cool is that?

I met Burt a couple of years ago, he was the parade Grand Marshall in the hometown we share. He drove is personal batmobile. The parade ended at a small festival where he parked and signed 8X10 glossy photos and was happy to interact with the people. He and his wife almost seemed to still be in puppy love with each other. Very happy to see that.
A funny side note, after the event he just drove his batmobile home.

I was only 4 years old when Batman first aired, but I remember always wanting to stay up to watch it. The only way my mother would let me was if I went to bed and took a nap an hour before the show and she would come to my room just before it started to wake me. I don't know the time of evening it was, but I remember making no fuss about it cause it was worth it to me to be allowed to be up after regular bedtime to watch my favorite show. Batman came on on a Saturday evening in the U.K., just after our dinner time (though we called it 'tea time'). That meant the entire family watched it together. I always preferred Robin to Batman, maybe because like myself in my family he was the younger one. Every child of my age had a Batcar and I hadn’t even heard of George Barris, or had any understanding of his genius. Of course the adult innuendo flew right over this 6-8 years old's head. At that time children wore duffle coats, if you didn’t put it on and just fastened it around your neck with the hood up you had an instant Bat-cape.

What do you mean "should be?" That's how comics were in the 50s and 60s, because of the creation of the Comics Code Authority and the work of Fredric Wertham, with "The Seduction of Innocence." It was a massive knee-jerk reaction in the exceptionally conservative era in the United States.
Comic books aren't just for kids as your comment seems to imply. "Watchmen" has been named as one of Time's 100 Best Novels list. Not comic books....books.
"Campy, not self-important" definitely has its place, but to say it's how comic book shows "should be" implies that you know very little about the medium.

@@Bad_Wolf_Media Dude--as a kid, I was reading science fiction (The only comic I liked in the 60's was (I think) Turok, which was a caveman prehistorical thing that I grew out of by 7). Folks who called themselves 'adults' at the time thought science fiction was code for space porn. So when I was reading Hal Clement or Alfy Bester, they figured I was jerking off--when I was reading Andre Norton in an English class, the 'teacher' reprimanded me for not contributing to classroom discussion--on the recent basketball game. If comic books are realistic--they are science fiction. If it's folks in improbable costume doing physically impossible stuff it should at least be self-aware. Hence---Campy!

Thank you for this wonderful video. The nostalgia is real! I was a huge fan of Batman and Robin when I was growing up. I knew the names of the actors and that they were playing characters for TV, but at the same time I thought they really were those heroes. I loved them both. However, I used to tell my Mom that when I grew up I was going to marry Adam West. My Uncle called once pretending to be Adam West and I swore for years that I had talked to the real Batman. Back then as a little girl of 6 years of age, I believed it all. lol

In the auditions, they made the right choices. Adam West has a more serious tone to him over Lyle Wagoner, which is more like Batman who can be serious and brooding. Burt Ward also had a better audition in your demo reels than the other actor for the part, for his enthusiasm and quite the performance fighter. Awesome video, I watched it to the end! Glad to see Burt had a great life overall ( a few bumps here and there)! Here's to TV's first Robin... BAM! ZAP!

Batman wasn't serious and brooding in the 60s. He became serious and brooding in the 80s, but even then, Robin became so before him. Seriously, just read New Teen Titans some time. Literally all the Titans think Batman is a toxic if not outright abusive influence on their leader. And that's pre-Crisis! Post-Crisis, Batman gets to join in on the depression.
Batman was more serious in the early years, 30s and 40s. But that was ended because of Fredric Wertham.

I was in 2nd grade when Batman came out and I loved it and Green Hornet too. And the cars! From the Munsters Koach to the Monkee Mobile GTO.
No real weapons in Batman, so innocent, punches were covered by a POW! ZOK! BOFF! or some such silly graphic. But it still seemed like heroic feats to a 6 year old that didn't know the camera was turned sideways for wall climbing and window cameos.
The 60's were a great time for a kid to watch television! I've seen Adam West in cartoon form on Family Guy right up until his passing and he is so missed.

This was my show when I was a kid. My dad passed away about 8 years ago and I have a wonderful memory of him reading the afternoon paper and me watching this show. They would show Batman and Robin in a no escape dilemma and of course they used “can Batman and robin escape, will the joker finally win? Tune in tomorrow same bat place same bat time same bat channel ” then I would look back at my pops and I nervously asked “do you think Batman and Robin can get out of this? He answered without moving the newspaper blocking his face “They can’t kill Batman and Robin they are the stars of the show”
That kind of killed the show for me😂😂😂😂

When Batman and Robin are doing their climb up the side of the building and a window opens (a regular occurrence on the show) the Green Hornet and Kato are there, wearing their masks of course. After some rather curt words between the rival crime-fighting teams, Batman and Robin continue up the building. Robin says "Gee Batman, why are they dressed like that?"
