Follow John Royer as he portrays a historical frontier longhunter in western Pennsylvania. John shows various winter scenes as he hunts old growth forests in search of whitetail deer with his .50 cal blackpowder muzzleloader. John also builds a fire using flint, steel and char cloth during a mid January thaw. The end of the video is capped of with a reenactment of the deer John killed with his .50 caliber TVM Flintlock on the last day of the late Pennsylvania flintlock deer hunting season.

The lack of screeching metal music and macho fist pumps makes this and all your other videos First Class. Way to go. Thank you.
THanks!
Hold on a sec I think it needs more cowbell.😆
Yes, the heavy metal intro is missing, lol.
Yeah I really miss the macho fist pumping myself.

I have yet to ever hunt personally but thank you for taking me on your adventure. You really add the passion and traditions to your storytelling. Thank you.
Unfortunately most people don’t hunt like this anymore a lot of people don’t know how to move in the woods.
I know I’m late to the party, but when he was walking through the fog I almost thought I was watching a French and Indian War/Revolutionary War film.
This was therapeutic and inspiring, excellent work!
Thanks!
The people that down voted this lack imagination.
This video is amazing without a word ever being spoken.
That fog scene was so cool
Yeah, not often does it ever look like that in the woods when i am hunting. I am glad I had the camera with me that day. Thanks!
You guys are really raising the bar with the quality of your videos. Well done!
Thanks Barry!
Home recovering from pneumonia and can't tell you how much I enjoyed your time in the woods.
Thanks Mark! Hoping for you a speedy recovery!
Got some serious The Revenant vibes. Nice.
I00% Agree
Didn't see him ripped apart by a bear only rating it a 5/10

What a great video Sir!! I grew up in Forest County (Tionesta), and did a lot of hunting and fishing! My first deer season was late flintlock! My father purchased a Thompson Center Hawken kit and we built it together in our basement. A few years later he gave me a Renegade kit for my birthday!! Lots of great memories!
Thanks! Those are two great guns, especially one you built together with your father!
I love watching this video periodically. I really want a flintlock this year, and want to get everything I can up here with it. Bear, moose, wolf, sheep, bison, muskox, etc. One shot and make it count.
Hi
Hands down, the best DEER HUNTER on UA-cam.
really enjoy your videos. and it's great to know that you're a Christian brother.
Thanks!
ABSOLUTELY one of the BEST VIDEOS IVE EVER WATCHED.
I sent you a message on facebook messenger, check it out.
I was about to say this
greetings ,love & respect from a Syrian hunter ..I think next time I go hunting I'll wear such a garment the way you did ..inspiring video ..charming nature sounds
Easily this is one of my favorite videos on UA-cam. Except for the camera, everything is true to mid 18th century hunting. I’ve watched the video several times. Thanks.
It's funny how at 5:43 the deer was like "wait a minute, is that a guy with a gun. NOPE, I'm outta here".
Great quality footage of beautiful country, and what looked to be an amazing hunt. Great shot placement! The historic fire building was impressive as well. Great work sir!
Nothing beats traditional hunting like this.
When he put that cloth on can’t nobody tell me he didn’t look like a Jedi 😂
Quickly turning a blanket into a practical, cozy coat was something I'd never seen before.
.... It was awesome.
Thought he was making a tent.
John, this is just one of the most beautiful videos on primitive trekking and hunting. Some of these scenes wouldn't have looked at all out of place in The Revenant. It's a sacrifice hauling filming gear around the woods, setting up camera shots, while setting up rifle shots. I'm sure all of use here are grateful for your work though!
Thank you! I plan to make at least one video like this a year. Its hard to find the right spot and film at the same time i am hunting plus all the editing. Just hope I can get an impact shot on camera one of these days.
Not the first time I’ve watched this but some of the shots you captured in this film are just unreal, especially that shot of you walking through the fog!
John brings it all to us and i mean every aspect of being out in the woods there's no one out there that makes videos this thorough and organic. Thank you John God Bless
Thanks for an insight on how deer hunting was done many moons ago.I won’t ever complain again about how hard deer hunting can be even with all the modern rifles and associated hi tech gear that us modern hunters and bush users bog ourselves down with these days. Cheers from Victoria, Australia. PS- I love the wool blanket set up.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video!
I literally cannot say anything but good about this video ,beautiful scenery with a quiet tasteful efficient hunt and at the end showing respect for the Deer !
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video!
This is the real mankind
@cheekykent n why insult a person if you don't even know who he/she is
Yeah what kind of person are you?
cheekykent n why the insult?
Idiot
Ya guys know what to do. Insult back
@Dark Carl Well it’s clear he couldn’t handle it
I enjoy all your hunts, but this one is my favorite. I think you did a great job capturing an early American settlers hunt. I particularly liked the coat you made and the firestarter was fantastic. Beautiful flintlock and perfect shot. Thanks!
Very few things in life are as cool as time travelling straight into youtube era.
Except that trick with the blanket robe. That's pretty amazing.
Thanks for preserving how my ancestors lived. Makes me proud to be American!
The way that you present the video is spot on and great. It’s both entertaining but somewhat soothing with the scenery that is shown. This is one channel I can turn to for a break from adrenaline inducing music and exciting content.
A Bob Ross masterpiece, but a hunting video.
After all of the chaos that the our beautiful country and the world have been going through, this video makes more sense than any of us will see for the next years to come.
God Bless 🇺🇸🇺🇸🙏😇
Beautiful video...the purist of today is yesteryears normal..thanks for the great work
This is one of the best hunting videos I have ever seen.
Hunts like this is the reason I bought a flintlock longrifle
About to upload a new video like this today!
Y'all are top notch.
At first, I was like "wtf is this weirdo doing?"
But when he actually killed the deer.... wow
StickierQuill YeAh ThIs Is AmErIcA!!!
Why not do a whole hunt skinning and cooking episode
Twodogs Hawkeye p
Twodogs Hawkeye 3

You are the Man! I love your videos man. I Know this is 3 yrs old. But it's like watching a mountain man hunt 200 yes ago. Absolutely Awesome!
I just found this channel. Simply amazing. I was mesmerized watching this traditional flintlock hunt. Made me yearn to be there with you sir. Thank you for taking the time to make such an amazing quality video. Awesome hunt and the period correct clothing is superb. God bless you sir and many great hunts for you in the future. Thanks for letting us tag along in spirit. Just subscribed to the channel!
Thanks! I try to make at least one of these videos each season.
I understand wanting to get in touch with our roots and nature, but damn does this make me grateful to have modern amenities and weaponry.
he looks like an Amish guy
Still hunting is fun with muzzleloader compared to automatic guns
This video makes me want to buy back my old Missouri Arms muzzle loader rifle.
I subbed today. Mainly because your videos are short and to the point. There are to many who would drag a vid like this out to 45 minuets.
Dan Martin - yes I don’t need to see someone gassing up the hunting rig and driving a thousand miles in time lapse lol.
Well sir, not only are you a master hunter but a master cinematographer
I love the whole colonial american feel of these videos
It's relaxing actually
You should come up to Maine and hunt with us! Thanks for all the videos. Really enjoy them.
that's living brother!
Great video! I could see the joy on your face when you got the doe. I'd be elated, too!
next time you walk around like this if you stumble upon someone else just act like like look like there dressed all crazy and pretend your from 1856 and you have no idea whats going on
Michael Vullo I think this time period he is portraying is more like the 1750’s
Michael Vullo that would be halarious 🤣🤣🤣
@@flightparamedic505 well I'm sure he got the joke I was imagining.
2nd the flint lock musket / rifle was first invented in 1815 by the way.
CageKicker I think your date of the development of the flintlock needs some review... flintlock Pennsylvania/Kentucky rifles were developed in the early 1700’s, brought over from skilled German craftsman.
CageKicker... No, flintlock rifles were around much earlier than the 1820’s. Percussion style actions were developed however roughly in the 1820’s timeframe. The rifle he is using for this hunt is most definitely a flintlock and not percussion.
You know what that was probably the best hunting video I ever saw with the old flintlock I love it and then you had even had a deal leather clothes on and that he’ll throw over you to keep the flintlock from getting wet that was great thanks for that video
How you came out of that fog looked amazing. Nice shot
Man I love being in the woods!! Great video! Makes me want to drop everything and head to deer camp!!
Ok, i've got a trick on how to make a sheet into a robe! Thank you!
I really enjoy all of your traditional hunting videos. I wish my state had a flintlocks only hunting season, or at least enough deer to make hunting worthwhile. But thanks for showing how it could be.
Thanks again for taking us with you back to a simpler time. Excellent videography and it didn't look easy. Good kill. Enjoy the fruits of your labor
Thank you!
great video...my favorite PA season.
I think it’s called lock time. You know the time before the flintlock spark reaches the barrel powder and fires. You stayed pretty much perfectly still for that. Great shot
That doe= "Longer than the rifle !" Nice hunt sequences.
It's so ... serene and masculine. My dad and brother would get a kick outta this.
Great video! I started off with traditional muzzleloader, but have gotten away from it. I’m thinking I need to go back to it...
Sir, I love your video! Cheers, Capandball
Thanks!
capandball wow
capandball nice shot bro
Hello capandball
That's a real compliment coming from Capandball!
Beautifully done video. I like that you leave the sounds natural and don’t try to entertain the viewer with the awful background music some folks like to use. Usually messes up the whole video.
1+1+2+4
Awesome video John!, wait all year for these late season flintlock hunts
Thanks Rob!
Beautiful scenery, use to hunt and hike and fish the adirondacks upstate NY, brought back memories.
I can just imagine Yankee Doodle Playing in the back of my mind while imagining this dude hunting for redcoats and using the guerrilla warfare tactic.
I like just a simple video without crazy music. I watch a lot of your videos. Good stuff.
1.2 million watches, Jon ! Well done.
Thanks Kevin!
Great video and awesome scenery and top footage, well done all, a 5* video and best regards from all of us form Down Under,Tony.
Thank you!
Leatherwood Outdoors I always thought that wool blanket u be wearing was a coat .pretty neat. pa looks like a hunters paradise
+Leatherwood Outdoors why not do one where you show the skinning and hide preservation and perhaps cooking too. Don't get me wrong these are good but maybe show the whole thing.
excellent videos, just bought my first flintlock .54 blue Ridge by pedrisoli, I'll let you know when I get it set up...
Bravo! One of the best hunting videos out there...
the red coats are coming! quickly reload! yeah right... lol this is amazing! thank you for sharing
I like the whole recreation of the equipment of the time , very well done.
Hi John, As always...documentary quality filming! Absotutely beautiful woods to still hunt through! You always make us feel like we are right there with you!!! As this portrayal would have been an every day thing at one time, was impressed with how the longhunter returned, to "his" sheltered "fire spot" to relax and warm his self! Loved the blanket shawl/ coat that kept him warm and his powder dry! Did you pass on the nice buck so he could grow?? Thank you! My only regret is that I won't live long enough to see you hit your peak at huntin and filmin in 15 to 20 years Sir! Very impressive John. Bless you and yours..... Old John
Thanks John! I really appreciate your comments!
as for the buck, I did not pass on him. He was illegal for me to shoot. If he had an extra point on his main beam he would have been legal. I have to count 3 points on one side excluding the brow tine.
Leatherwood Outdoors Another great video John. Really enjoy your stepping back into the traditiinal persona. The varied weather and wildlife really brought back fond memories of seasons past.
Thanks James!
Leatherwood Outdoors u really got something going for u with these real traditional hunt if u put these videos on tape I'll be the first to buy one. I know u can't wait till next hunting season to get back out there. if I do all your own filming and hunting u are a bad man I could see u in a motion picture like the revanant cause u definitely have the endurance and skills for it. Like scare face said this is grade a @$!# man lol. happy hunting and be safe.

Just a wonderful video. So many videos are made just so the person making the video can hear themselves talk. Your video put me in the wood with you. I admire your skill as a hunter and videographer.
I'm also from Western Pa. I love our outdoors here in our beautiful state. Great Hunt...Great video.
Thanks!
Wow you multi talented your videos are superb and hunting skills are also no matter what weapon you use, outstanding job, hats off to you, Best of Luck always and thanks for sharing your videos.
Thanks John!
A window into the past.......Nicely done.
Thank you!
Love it!! And no bs music!!!
Beautiful!!!! Thanks for sharing and taking time to film the beautiful scenery.
Thanks Eric!
I hunted Deer for 10 years with a Black Powder rifle (50 cal.). Traditional style, Flintlock and Caplock.
Beautiful country up there. I really miss it. Live out in desert now.
My hunts are usually quiet also, because I rarely seen anything and never fire a shot!
that's awesome you saw and shot one as you set up your camera to show you walk by. I can't believe there's no rifle footage from last three days with snow. I really can't.
it was next to impossible this season with how crunchy the ground was. They could hear me coming from a mile away. Same way with the late season. Saw lots of deer but couldnt get close enough for a shot with the camera. It came down to the last day of the season.
I was with you on the noisy crunch ground! It was like walking on potato chips still in their tinfoil bags! Then I ran into the problem of the sun coming out and melting all the frozen branches - was like a thunderstorm in the woods :)
your channel has the best content on youtube
Thanks!
I love this video never gets old. Hunting how it is supposed to be done!
great video. i really enjoyed it.
Great video! Thanks
I miss Pa. I miss the land and mountains. Love the conten keep it up.
Thanks Justin!
Always an excellent job of camera work and scenery. Love the wool blanket coat and blanket pin.
Eventually I will get a flintlock to hunt with, right now my muzzleloader for deer season is an 1853 Enfield musketoon in .58 caliber, got a nice doe the first year I owned it.
Love your videos! Great job with the filming of this the added scenes of the ice and everything is great. I look forward to more
Thanks! This was the last flintlock video or deer hunt video of the season I think. Hope to make at least one per season.
Just absolutely wonderful video. You truly represented mountain man and his life in this video. Great stuff.
Thanks!
Beautiful video !! i love this kind of hunting. the good old way of hunting. hunting with a flintlock or a bow is more real.
Great video
The scenery is perfect
Thought I was up in the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Soothing. Use a Thompson Center rocklock in 50 cal.
Very nice video. I really enjoyed it.
What beautiful scenery and and a terrific hunting video.
Looks like western pa in the Alleghenies or wv. Reminds me of my ancestors from there and me walking thru the woods out there as a young'n with my percussion t/c .50 caliber hawken
