I've tried Udio and it's pretty impressive, it makes light work of making quick sound clips that are easily accessible for use in videos, overlyas etc.
However, I don't see it as a threat to the music industry. It's a tool that could be used for some nice work, if used well. Just like DAW apps allow creative artists to generate sounds without any musical instruments or being able to do dubstep reverbs with their voice, for example, yet we listen and enjoy them. Even professional studios for top artists will have their voice pulled and tweaked to an enth of it's life in order to make it sound perfect on the record release. These are just tools the music industry has used for a long time now.
When smart phones started getting cameras that were as good as the ones used by the movie industry, did they suddenly think everyone now has the capability to produce blockbuster films? no, but people did, and still do walk around with that ability pockets, yet it's tiktok and youtube videos instead.

Thanks Gary, firstly let me say I have been a musician for 50 years and have used all kinds of tech and acoustic instruments to compose music. So, when I heard about Udio I dived right on in (with the same concerns as you) and crated a prog rock concept album about AI. It took three days. I wrote most of the lyrics, not all, the result was amazing! The Udio compositions needed a DAW to round out the imperfections. Yes, there are imperfections and there are ethical concerns. Philosophically, the great dived IMHO is live acoustic and played electric music vs recorded music. At last, we have reached that wall and it is growing higher and more ethically and legally divisive.

SUNO creates very catchy melodies, but if you use it for a long time, you begin to notice the same melodic moves. UDIO has much more varied melodies and more complex arrangements and harmonies. In UDIO it is more difficult to create a good long composition than in SUNO, but as a result it turns out better and more interesting. Plus in UDIO, of course, the quality of sound and, especially, vocals is much higher.
I have already created several songs in various styles in SUNO and UDIO using my own lyrics. Here are some examples:

I've played with Udio for a few days, and it is spooky-amazing. However, to get 3 half-decent verse inspirations in jazz/blues/soul style took 68 "credits" and about 4 hours. I encountered moderation issues so quite a few prompts that seem innocent get rejected. I'm old enough to remember the arpeggiator debates, the hate for home organs, and the lack of respect for so-called musicians who mimed their performances. Bring in auto-tune (more recently), or Grimes pathetic public tantrum because she couldn't cope with tempo matching yesterday,. As a musician I am NOT worried about this AI stuff. It will inspire better music from humans for humans who care about music, and improve elevator music for idiots who hum along to MIDI files. $0.02

You are not worried now, but this is only the beginning, and the technology gets better exponentially. While at the moment the results are pretty mixed with a gem here and there, in a year or 2 it will consistently be better than human producer. And with better i mean more pleasent to hear for the average customer. At that point we get to the stage where some people will prefer human music just because it is human and not because of any quality assignment, while most people will just be happy with AI music.

The drummer said there is no way a drum machine will ever replace a a drummer 😂 people slagged off midi. They said sampling will never catch on, it’s stealing, People laughed at UA-cam, This is just the start of A I music, same with video, A friend of mine made a video of a guy reading the news, I swear you would say that’s a real person. The only time you’ll hear real music in the future will be when you go see a live band. Even that will be questionable. I deeply understand music, from its composition to its production, and I’ve managed to produce incredibly beautiful music from UDIO. Perhaps it's because I know precisely how to craft a detailed prompt. You can’t just say, “create a pop song,” and expect extraordinary results. You need to provide a meticulously detailed prompt, including specifics like key signature, tempo, and more. It involves multiple iterations, tweaking the prompt as you fine-tune the verse, chorus, and bridge. You must specify the instruments to use, how to layer them effectively, and so forth until everything aligns perfectly. Moreover, crafting lyrics that are coherent and rhyme is essential. It’s far from straightforward, but the results can be truly astonishing and i am in awe

As a musician I have several opinions. But firstly I am disappointed in the ways that these AI companies have been allowed to "scrape" copyrighted work into their neural networks. The argument that this is a transcendent technology is frankly a load of B. S. and speaks more to the fact that music and the arts are a much more decentralized and granulated marketplace than any other businesses. Insofar as the comparison with a human being learning the various tunes as a way training their own style of writing being the same as what is happening with these machines _ that's even worse hogwash: these works of art and music weren't listened to by an A. I., they were "trained" on the original works by adding them to a database which as much as anyone tries to spin it _these generative A. i. models wouldn't be capable of without a human writing the scripts. Whether these original records or works of art were ever paid for to begin with is a point of contention, but then to have them sitting in a neural network to be referenced at any point via an algorithm as if they were owned by these companies is for lack of a better term Robbery. This technology has the added consequence of not only devaluing the works of art and music it is using in it's data set but also the need of folks to pursue those past times in general which could ultimately lead to a kind of feedback loop unless someone is suggesting we're on the precipice of General A. I. That second tune that udio gave you even sounded as if it were Can Calloway performing it. Down to the quality of the audio. Artifacts that were present on the original analog recordings are one of the reasons this tech has been mistaken for being so authentic and impressive but ultimately I'd argue this is further evidence of the ways in which this is a crime against the arts and the artists and musicians who have made it over the years. In any case I don't subscribe to this general feeling of inevitably in the zeitgeist because of the historical role of technological innovation. So far the fields where A. I. Might serve to benefit humanity (health, medicine, etc.) are not where these companies have put their focus, and by stealing art and music they are flirting with a growing sense of nihilism. But be that as it may I appreciate your point of view and thank you for your video. All the best,
    Cheers
