Another great video, Mark. Really sorry to hear about your recent house fire. I'm sure the retro community is going to rally round and have you back in the game soon. All the best 👍
As I mentioned in a previous video MArk: your videos are so well presented that they are WELL worth watching. The zooming in is perfect, the way you present it is perfect and you do it in a way that makes the entire video interesting! Great work again!
That's a great piece of kit! The only thing you could wish for is that the Xstation-pcb would fill the entire opening in the case for esthetic reasons :)
So, I have an NTSC 5501 with xstation, psnee and region lock defeat. I have been hearing about DFO double frequency oscillator. PAl, JP and NTSC games all seem to be playing fine without the DFO. What use is the DFO then?
@@MarkFixesStuff Yeah. I saw someone selling an OG Playstation with XStation and DFO and was curious about what benefit there could be. Only a very modest one, I think. I can see its importance for those who want to keep using the disc player.
i wish they would focus on getting this working on the slim models. i have the ps1 screen and ps1 slim and would like to replace the laser too the xstation.
Brilliant as always, saw it on Patreon last week, but re-watching just to push your channel higher :) Now please 3D print a "cover" into the hole left by removed optics in disc slot, maybe with a slot for SD_card extender?
What size wire should be used when connecting the APLL on the QSB? I pulled a 22 awg wire from a broken little fan in my basement, but I'm worried it might be too small.
Sorry to upset you but I installed that, and I’m a qualified electronics engineer. The wire used is actually old IDE cable and at the time, I was the best at mod chip installations for ps1 and ps2 all series in the south of UK, I fixed and repaired many other people’s mod chip installs which were terrible with their soldering etc. This is at a time when this machine first came out :)
I remember i have E3 ODE pro for ps3 super slim...but i accident update ps3 firmware..so it didn't work any more 😵😭 i looking people who can fix it in youtuber non can fix it

@@MarkFixesStuff that is sad to hear that maybe the community who support you for a long time will donate those console they do not want anymore to support this channel so we can watch more amazing video 👍
@@MarkFixesStuff last I saw there’s footage of a Spyro game running, still has some graphical glitches and is run from a save state which is super impressive! So I guess it won’t be too long now 😀
@@MarkFixesStuff Doubt it very soon. No word on Libcrypt support/Anti-Mod protected titles, or if the mechacon is implemented or if they're going down the PSIO route of hacks instead. It's a very complex system and even real HW cannot run all games properly, due regional mechacon differences and X-station has shown this already.
Thanks for this great video Mark. I recently gotten my XStation and tried to do an install on a 5501 I had but unfortunately messed up when trying to solder the wire next to the darn oscillator (apparently that point had broke from the board). At least I got as far as the BIOS screen then went straight to the CD/Memory card screen. Very frustrating. I got two more parts unit 5501's on the way so will just have to wait until they arrive to try it again but until then will practice on some dead 5501 boards. I would have just probably played my PS1 games on the PS2 but wanted to retain playing the games on the original hardware, with no game compatibility issues. I still have my 7501 I bought new in 1997 and still works, but will keep that one stock and unmodified.
Anyone have issues with it going straight to memory card screen? I checked the FFC cable and even reversed it because in the guide provided by Github and this video they have it reversed orientation, blue side always up, but the words on the cable are on different sides so I thought that might be the issue but it doesn't matter. Either way it will go to the memory card screen right after the white start up screen. My suspicion is the QSB. I think those through holes that need to connect by filling it with solder may not have a good connection but I'm not sure how to test or see it since it is underneath the QSB. I'm going to double check the IC701 and it's legs to make sure I got the right ones but I'm pretty sure that was all good as I took my time and was very careful. I actually thought that was a much easier process than the QSB section. Anyway, please help if you can think of anything that may be causing this issue. Thank you.
@@MarkFixesStuff thanks for the reply. Yes I will also contact support. I went back to the QSB and redid some of the through hole joints. I held the soldering iron down on each hole a bit longer after adding flux of course. Anyway, I still get the same result but now it seems to be taking longer to get to the memory card screen. It will stay on the white Sony screen for a bit longer, almost as if it's trying hard to get to the black playstation logo screen but can't. Do you think I might be on to something? Also the green light that used to flash on the Xstation board when opening the lid doesn't seem to flash as much. Now it kind of flickers a bit then goes dark. The blue light is still constant though. Not sure if anyone has noticed this at all or what it means?
Want to keep updating this as I hope it will help someone out there with similar issues. Been testing different micro SD cards (Samsung and San Disk) and also older versions of the firmware and still same result going to the memory card screen but I been noticing that after running a fresh install of the firmware on the SD card it creates a config.txt file in the 00xstation folder. When I open this config.txt file it only contains one character, . If you zoom in, it's basically a questions mark inside a box. Not sure what that means. Will keep posting more details as I find them.
interesting video as always. Of all the consoles I'd want to go to these lengths, PS1 would be right down on that list but it's nice people can. PS1 emulation is very good I find
It just emulates the CD drive and the copy protection routines, then passes the code to the original playstation hardware where it is run just the same as if it were from the original disc.

Haha! Yeah!
What size wire should be used when connecting the APLL on the QSB? I pulled a 22 awg wire from a broken little fan in my basement, but I'm worried it might be too small.
It's not carrying any power, just a small signal. It's more important that it's as short as possible :)
The thickness of the wires on that existing mod chip! You could run a toaster with them ;)
I just rewired my cooker with them.
