  • this segment covers the freight engines of the Rock Island. Starting with the black and red FTs and working through the GP38s we see a railroad struggling to keep going. The equipment has a marked decline in appearance over the span of Bob's filming. The Rock's collapse was a sad end to an old road. Many things conspired against it, but along the way there were some geniuses at the helm who turned it around, only to have others behind them drive it back into the ditch.

Thanks for the nice comments. I grew up about 65 miles from the Rock, so it wasn't something I saw often or got to know. Now that the Santa Fe's gone, I can definitely appreciate what it means to see old footage of what you grew up with. Bob said he's got a 400' roll of 8mm film somewhere with more stuff on it, but he hasn't found it yet. I'm hopeful he will someday and I can post that for others to enjoy as well.

Your videos bring back many childhood memories. I grew up not far from Rock Island main line in Davenport, Iowa. I remember when I heard a train comming up the grade, I would hop on my bike and race to watch it go by. It's too bad that there was'nt more film captured of this RR. Yours are precious. Thank you!!

1:55 MKT also had a few ALCo RS units that were re-powered by EMD. one of these, number 142, survives on the Midland Railway in Baldwin City, KS
3:59 I haven't seen too many photgraphs of the EMD F2! Glad someone caught it on video!

This is awesome... I grew up in KS .. near Enid. Wasn't able to drive until mid 80's. By then the RI has disappeared. Seeing Tonkawa, Enid and all other points.. w/RI equipment is priceless. Love to see more

The Rock Island finally fell to corporate raiders. It was a truly thriving Corn Belt operator in the 1930's.

All this is 8mm? Wow! Usually, people didn't know how to expose the film correctly, or they let the horrible automatic thing expose it. These look amazing!

did Bob get that unit in his film?

I believe the unit in question would be IAIS ES44AC #513. It's the Iowa Interstate's Rock Island tribute unit. It was introduced in 2010 so I kinda doubt Bob caught it.

I was referring to a loco number rather than model. I wondered if R.I ever had a unit #513. Yes his filming days were decades before the GE would have been manufactured.
