    Wild Blue is probably my legit favorite of the album. First time I heard it what came to my head was Gerry Rafferty - Right Down The Line. Really nice groove and vibe with obvious influences from JJ Cale, Dire Straits and Fleetwood Mac among others. Absolute banger!
    Til the Right One Comes was another banger as well. My 2nd favorite for sure. My only tiny problem was the solo. I guess I just got used to John playing that minor pentatonic/SRV style over that major chord progression but it just didn't sit well with me considering that he already started with a really nice line before the solo. I wish he stuck with major there it would've continued the vibe of the song. Very minor detail anyway. It also sounded like Graceland at the beginning of the song there too.
    Why You No Love Me was interesting because the chord progression was really spicy like you said. If only the lyrics were not that cheesy there was so much potential for the song. However I do remember John's interview with Zane Lowe in that there's a reason why those were the chosen lyrics. It's really interesting something that sounds so shallow has a very deep meaning when you open it up. Also I'm still trying to remember what song I've heard that progression from or even just the general feel. Maybe a Chicago or Boston song? Idk. I didn't like it the first time I heard it too but it grew on me after listening to it a couple of times.

    I love your playing and analogy of the album. But for me, they are simply nice smooth rock songs with a lots of lush verbs and pads. I'm missing the creative acoustic genius of John's early works. Songs like Neon, Why Georgia and Gravity are maybe good examples. Newer tunes like Assassin and the infectious pocket of Vultures, will remain more of my favorite John Mayer tunes. They have a bit more edge, something that's missing from Sob Rock.

    • @DarrylSyms
      @DarrylSyms  2 роки тому +3

      I agree in a way, and look forward to more of that in the future. For now though, I appreciate John demonstrating that good music doesn’t have to have epic technical guitar. Once in a while it might be cool though, I hear you 💁‍♂️

      @@DarrylSyms Yeah, the days of "guitar shredding" are over hopefully. You're right, John's work is really tastefully done here. I guess his tongue in cheek approach to this album with an 80's vibe works in that respect.

    • @DarrylSyms
      @DarrylSyms  2 роки тому +2

      It could be a number of things, but I can assure you that it’s not the fretboards fault. Perhaps you live in a humid environment? Perhaps your finger oils are prone to stickiness? Maybe there’s residue on your fretboard from a previous owner? Or perhaps you just haven’t liked this video yet? 🤔🤪

  • @atidyshirt
    @atidyshirt 2 роки тому +2

    Really cool video, love your stuff in general, but on a side note, does anyone find after playing guitar for a long time that you start to hear melodies in terms of the fretboard, I find this kinda an issue when trying to learn piano (in fact I suck at it), anyone got advice about how to break your ear out of this trap, idk could just be a me thing :)

    • @DarrylSyms
      @DarrylSyms  2 роки тому

      I don’t understand this “trap” you’re in? “Hearing melodies” is a dream of many players 🤷‍♂️

    • @PedroAsfora
      @PedroAsfora 2 роки тому +2

      If you mean visualizing melodies as a fretboard movement instead of understanding what scale degrees are being played, I think you can make it work towards your advantage if you simply understand what interval each movement corresponds to. Don’t think of it as a problem, it’s just an extra tool in your mind!

    • @atidyshirt
      @atidyshirt 2 роки тому

      I think this is close to what I am experiencing, more in scale formulations and intervals but in terms of the fretboard in general, I tend to see things in terms of not scales and intervals but more in terms of I guess 'notes in sequence' for lack of a better word, I tend to see things as visualizing the fretboard in relation to the chords and melody idk how to describe it accurately without sitting down and properly formulating a paragraph. But I guess that it's more like I am locked into theory by patterns and my limited knowledge of scales (which is probably not as advanced as most of you).

    • @atidyshirt
      @atidyshirt 2 роки тому

      @@DarrylSyms maybe that is the wrong wording for my issue, I cannot hear licks/melodies as clearly as you (note I do not consider myself nearly as proficient as you at the instrument), I still need to sit down and figure licks out, more so i tend to visualize licks on the fretboard rather than recognizing intervals and using my ear 'correctly', (it's kinda hard to describe but this is kinda my best explanation) sorry :/

    • @DarrylSyms
      @DarrylSyms  2 роки тому +2

      I’m still a bit uncertain on your question, but I can comment on the very last statement about being “locked into theory patterns”. I think it’s about perspective. You may think that you’re locked into patterns, and you might say it’s because of the theory, but I think it’s about perspective on theory. There are multiple perspectives that we can have about the same topic, but some feel more constricting than others. Find perspectives that grant you freedom. Also train your ear to associate intervallic distances with certain emotions. Another top tip in any case is to learn more songs! I find that many players don’t spend enough time learning music. Players tend to skim over songs, but the real takeaway is from MASTERING songs 🙌
