i have five outdoor guinea pigs. the three girls live together and the boys live separately. the main part of my guinea pigs diet is freshly picked grass, i am lucky enough to live on a farm so fresh grass is readily available all year round. They also have a constant supply of hay. I do sometimes feed veggies and pellets but we sometimes have issues with rats burrowing under the cages to get scraps and especially with one of my girls due for a litter any day now I don't want to risk rats getting in because the girls cage has no wire on the bottom like the boys. Love your videos xx
Yes please make more of these kinds of videos!!!!! I love them! Is what you fed Bonnie & Teacake today the diet you would recommend for indoor piggies? I am trying to go pellet free. :) Love ur channel as always Erin!
Thanks a lot for this video! I just found out pellets aren't so good and now I had no idea how to feed my guinea pigs and rabbits without pellets. So this is very helpful!
Loved this Vlog so much! Thanks for focussing so much on the bunnies! This was soo helpful - I've always wanted an in depth video about what your animals eat so I can mimic your incredible ways. So the majority of the bunnies diet should be leafy greens such as gem lettuce? Also, my bunnies have been on pellets their whole life, but now I hear you say and also on your website it has loads of veg you can't really feed alongside pellets because it causes bloating, so this is restricting them a lot! Do you think it's the best choice to stop feeding pellets and focus more on veg now and then with foraging and natural herbs in the spring/summer? Thanks so much Erin xxxx
Thanks! Glad it was helpful! Reducing pellets, or eliminating them altogether would be great! You might have seen the page on my site about pellets? Leafy greens as the bulk - for outdoor buns mainly cabbages, but other great choices include vegetable greens, kitchen herbs, kale and various types of lettuce. In the warm season you can feed partly or entirely forage (if there is a constant supply of grasses, meadow plants etc). If you stop feeding pellets, reduce them over about 2 weeks until none are left, and in this time increase the veg (at least 10% body weight in order to get the minimum amount of nutrients), then a few weeks into the pellet free diet, you may start to slowly introduce cabbages and other cruciferous veggies - some buns are prone to bloat and other intestinal problems, so monitor their droppings and make sure their tummies are okay xx
Pets Palace Plus Wow thanks for the huge reply! You explain so clear, now that it seems understandable to me so thank you! Okay I think I might do that, slowly introduce them to their new pellet free diet! I will monitor their droppings closely and have cautions of poorly tummies thanks to your advice. This seems so much better for their benefit because feeding them just veggies is the closest to the Wild! Also, I can't wait for your spring and summer time vids to come out, it would be great to watch you forage and pick herbs so I can get the right stuff! Thanks Erin, night xxxx
Thanks for the video! its a great help since I wasn't sure is cabbage could be given to them . Random question but can guinea pigs eat leaves off of tree's, i have researched about this about four days ago but there wasn't many results, my guinea pigs are free range and now that its autumn i see them munching on some fallen leaves, loving your video's, they're a huge help! your piggies and rabbits are so cute! :D
Hi Erin, I know that this video is from a couple of years ago but I was wondering if anyone knew what herb blend she uses for her guinea pigs? Can anyone please help!!!
Loving ur videos I have been binge watching them all through the holidays I was wondering if u could do some more rabbit videos as I have one myself and am trying to build as knologe as possible xxx
in the middle of watching this a commercial for a bowl for guinea pigs came on and I thought it was still you but the voice was a lot different I dont know what I was thinking
I have been slated on a bunny face book group because I have started to feed my bun seeds along with her pellets before bed. And you said that's it ok to feed seeds at the moment she gets sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, flax seeds, and sesame seeds I looked it up and most places say it's completely ok and so does your website. She is getting this as it's getting colder and she is outside so she needs the energy to keep warm. Do you think this should be ok for her. By the way I love your videos! You should do more videos like this xx
Don't worry about it, they're just not educated on the subject. Unfortunately uk/us sites are quite misleading when it comes to nutrition, so they probably just say those things because they have done their research on those. Seeds provide essential fatty acids and other useful nutrients. Pellets usually contain fatty acids (good brands contain oily seeds and the not as good brands use lots of vegetable/soy oils) but you may add a small amount if she still needs to gain weight. I use a translator but these pages about seeds are useful, just to name a few : www.kaninchenwiese.de/ernaehrung/futtermittel/getreide-und-samen/ www.kaninchenberatung.de/pages/infos/ernaehrung/futterliste/saaten-nuesse.php www.haustiere-kaninchen.de/samen.html
+Pets Palace Plus thanks yer she could do with gain a bit of weight as she is lionhead but she only weighed 1LB when she went to the vets for her shots in September but she is now slowly gaining weigh plus she loves them to bit and will behave if she know she is getting her pellet and seed at night she just binkys and go's VERY crazy xx
Fran Makin that’s actually not necessary to feed pellets and in fact some rabbits can’t have pellets due to health problems just as long as a rabbit has unlimited hay and water and a variety of veggies then they don’t need pellets
Thanks so much! This is great. I took many notes for this video. what kind of dried herbs are you using for the guinea pigs, and should two indoor ones get half or less of a handful? Thanks!
Hi Erin I loved the video but I was wondering if you could make a video about the quantities of seeds etc. to give to the guinea pigs when they're sick and how to prepare them, how much to give them and how often etc. Love your channel you have taught me so much about pets and I just spent like an hour writing down every single seed and it's benefits on your last video 😂❤️❤️the only thing that was missing was how much to give them etc. love you and it would be awesome if you could reply❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I only give my piggies veg in the morning but they see hungry by the evening. They have unlimited hay all day every day but should I add some veg in the evenings too? Also can I dry herbs myself without a dehydrater?
It would be good if you fed them veg twice daily :) Yes you can dry them in the sun (make sure they're very dry though, no damp as that = mould. Or a very low heat in the oven :)
Pets Palace Plus Awesome thank you. I'm already planning my herb garden for the spring and looking at planting some yarrow too. I'd forage for it but I'm worried I'd get it confused with the poisonous plant that looks similar. We get loads of sticky weed in the garden though and bramble. I'll start doing their veg in two sittings though and see how it goes, thank you. Another weird question: what's the best time to get all the reduced veg in Tesco? Mine never has any lol 😂
Can u do a video on how much vegetables U feed your rabbits and Guinea pigs in the SUMMER so we have an idea of how much less they need of fresh veggies when they have fresh forage as a replacement. Just like this video but for summer. Thanks love ur channel 👍
Hi Erin, love your channel. I just wanted to ask - how do you choose veggies you buy for your pets, with regard to pesticide and whatever else they spray on the veggies? Whatever I buy I rinse for like three minutes because I'm worried about this and I know guinea pigs are pretty sensitive animals. Eco stuff should be okay, but it's expensive.
Hi! Thank you! I don't buy organic as it is much too expensive and doesn't usually last as long. I just buy what I can find at the supermarkets. I just make sure they get rinsed really well :)
love your vids. As a new piggy owner I look to your vids for advice. One question though: With all that cabbage , don't you find they have gas problems? like my vet and other sources say to not feed them too much cabbage. Also i give my piggy more kale for their greens. Do you feed them lots of kale too?
Thank you! UK & US sites often say 'cabbage is unsafe' or 'cabbage = bloating' etc. This is because probably 95% of UK/US owners feed pellets or other commercial muesli etc, and pellets alongside cabbage is basically a recipe for bloating. Cabbage needs to be digested quickly in order to prevent gas, so if their digestion is being delayed by pellets, bloating is more likely to occur. Even on a pellet free diet, you want to wait a few weeks before feeding that much so their digestive systems adapt, and always introduce cabbages really slowly so they get used to it. Yep, kale is very healthy too (same feeding rules apply) :)
I live in a extremely small town. we don't have natural grocers.. or anything. So greens and stuff are extremely expensive. I live in a apartment with my bun.. we just adopted her and I'm trying to grow my own veggies for her. Right now we have it every other day she gets some veggies.. she has unlimited hay and some home made pellets.. we are trying so hard to get her to veggies all the time..
It can understand it must be quite difficult to provide enough veggies where you are situated. Sounds like you're doing your best though! Are there no supermarkets where you can get her veggies?
I am in a small town called Midland Texas.. There are little pop up vendors that sell greens. But they just come randomly.. The grocery we have is not an organic grocerer. A lot of their produce has preservatives. So we try to go to the Natural foods store that's like 45 minutes Away. Everything is super expensive. And most farmers down here grow cotton. My bun is a little Lions head as well she's had a pretty rough beginning so we are just now starting to get her on a feeding routine and weening her off her old food. Which was actually hamster food..
Oh gosh! Hamster food? Yeah, I wish organic veg was more affordable and lasted longer. Here in the uk it is very expensive to buy organic, and it generally doesn't last as long, so ourselves and the pets just get the regular supermarket veg :)

Typical Ava get the metal ball that you can hang on their cage (don't know what it's called) gives them something to play with and they get to put effort into getting their food.
Hi Erin, wondering why your piggies don't seem to have many tubes etc. Especially your indoor pigs:) im sure you are doing a good thing but wondering why :) Xx

Hiya! According to: www.kaninchenwiese.de/ernaehrung/fuetterungsregeln/ernaehrungs-mythen/ 'Silage is presented as a common feed in many older books based on experience. Even today's rabbit holders, which offer Silange, make positive experience with it. It is important, however, that silage can also have deficiencies (due to incorrect production and / or storage), in these cases it can lead to incompatibilities.' I know haylage is a drier version, but I assume that it is very similar. They may have them whole or chopped in half :)
yes more videos like this. how old are u seem very inteligent. and also how did u get the houses that the rabbit and guinea pigs have u seem rich or something😛🎊🎉
My guinea pigs have never had fresh forage. They have only ever had small amounts of dandelion. How do I get my Guinea pigs used to fresh forage? I got them in November and now that's it's summer I would like to give them forage.
Lara MVB do you live in the U.K.? I am trying to find a horse supplier kind of thing for bedding and maybe hay does anyone know of any good ones near the south of Scotland? Xx
My piggies don't seem to eat leafy veg... any ideas for how to get them eating it? Should I just try giving them more leafy veg and less sweeter veg everyday to teach them they need to eat it??
sweeter veg such as carrots, should be fed in small amounts (unless you have outdoor pigs that need energy) may i ask what kind of leafy greens are you feeding? Avoid Iceberg lettuce, but if youre feeding romaine, try when you give them the daily veg, just give them the leafy greens first, and see what happens! hope this works!
Emma'sPets I give them more sweet stuff because that's what they eat... we've tried different cabbages and gem lettuce like Erin was feeding. They don't eat cauliflower leaves either... they love spinach and herbs and really love fresh grass and dandelions. I think I will try giving them leafy veg every day and change the ratios between leafy and sweet to see if they can learn to eat it. Thanks for your advice :)
They all seem to love broccoli too, including the little leaves, but not the stalks... they don't like sprouts, we don't try very often but they never eat them...
+Rachel Lisa aww such fussy animals! My two boys were they same way, both hated bell pepper, but I always fed red and yellow, then one day I asked Erin for help, and she told me to give them green. I did, and guess what? they loved them!
Hehe funnily enough most of mine love red pepper :D I'm going to try making some changes starting tomorrow, might need to go out and buy some extra veg as I had given up on leafy veg but now I see how I can try to get them eating it :) thanks for your help x
Your animals are so lucky too have a owner like u :)
JoAndPie 100 and 50 percent right.
yeah they are
Awww so cute, you're such a good mum Erin 😊
Great to see the piggies looking happy and healthy as usual! You take such great care of them :)

I love these videos because it helps me to take care of my Guinea Pigs better .

Hi Erin, I know that this video is from a couple of years ago but I was wondering if anyone knew what herb blend she uses for her guinea pigs? Can anyone please help!!!
Love your vids but cut up the celery into smaller pieces because the strings of the celery can make them choke

Is it alright to keep rabbits indoors in winter then take them out into a shed and a run in the summer?
Sure! :)
Pets Palace Plus thnx, I think they will prefer being out in the summer😀🐰🐰I luv ur vids btw
The main bulk of a bunnies diet should be 80% bay ,an egg cup of pellets and a few veggies. Please advise.
Fran Makin that’s actually not necessary to feed pellets and in fact some rabbits can’t have pellets due to health problems just as long as a rabbit has unlimited hay and water and a variety of veggies then they don’t need pellets

How often do you clean out your indoor guinea pigs
Can u do a video on how much vegetables U feed your rabbits and Guinea pigs in the SUMMER so we have an idea of how much less they need of fresh veggies when they have fresh forage as a replacement. Just like this video but for summer. Thanks love ur channel 👍
Hi Erin, love your channel. I just wanted to ask - how do you choose veggies you buy for your pets, with regard to pesticide and whatever else they spray on the veggies? Hi Erin love the video yay 🎀
my guinea pigs each get only around a tablespoon of pellets each day, do you think it is safe to feed cabbage, broccoli etc or not? :)
Broccoli, kale, chinese cabbage - the well tolerated varieties can be safely given. Cold pressed grain free pellets will be better for digestion too :)
OK, thanks
I live ur videos good job on all of them
Could you do a video on what vegetables Guinea pigs can and can't have pls? X
She has one on her main channel pets palace kids :)
Great video but a quick question why do u dry the vegetables?
JustAshley xx I think she said it's because they don't like them wet and it can cause digestive problems, but it's not that bad especially in summer as it can hydrate them x
Yes that's right, and also I live in a hard water area so there is a greater risk of stones/other bladder & kidney related issues if the water isn't filtered x
Pets Palace Plus thanks!
Hiya Erin! What type of Hay do you give you're Bunnies xo
Hi! It is from a local pet shop - the reason I give them this is because they don't use harmful chemicals on the field (fertilisers etc), and only one crop is grown in the field, so it is better quality :) x
Great video!!! What website do you get your dried herbs from??
Thank you! Grunhopper (German company) on amazon :)
Pets Palace Plus Thank You!!🙂
Erin, I know this was a long time ago, but if you see this, can you tell me what Swede is? I don't think we have it in the U.S.!

How do you make your rabbits greens last until the next feeding. No matter how much food I give my rabbits they'll eat it all at once until it's all gone!! Please help even if your not Erin. Thanks

how often do u feed ur piggies and bunnies a day? and how do u know how much to feed them?
Twice daily they get veg, and the hay racks topped up as needed. Then a small serving of dried herbs.
I feed as much veg to last until the next feeding, and they have hay 24/7 :)
Hello there love your vids
Hi! I was wondering if you could give me the link to the dried herbs for my buns? Thank you so much ! ❤☺️
Just wondering how many guinea pigs and rabbits you have because it looks like you are feeding your animals a lot
Would it be fine if I just feed them there veggies in the the evening once a day but make it a good amount or should it be split up to two times a day
When r u gonna make main channel videos? You should post a update video😀
so just wondering are you suppose to give your guinea pigs a unlimited veggies
There should be enough to last them until the next feeding so their digestive systems stay evenly loaded :)
Ok thankyou so so much
Hi Erin, just a few quick questions.
Can Guinea Pigs eat haylege? I work at a farm and they say it's okay to feed it them, but I'm not quite sure?
Also, what would be the best way to feed Guinea Pigs and rabbits cherry tomatoes? Can they have them whole?
Hiya! According to: www.kaninchenwiese.de/ernaehrung/fuetterungsregeln/ernaehrungs-mythen/

I know haylage is a drier version, but I assume that it is very similar. They may have them whole or chopped in half :)

My guinea pigs have never had fresh forage. They have only ever had small amounts of dandelion. How do I get my Guinea pigs used to fresh forage? I got them in November and now that's it's summer I would like to give them forage.
So do you really need to feed piggies pellets or can I just give them veggies full time ?
Louise Kazzam no pellets are not necessary
