I'm not sure it's that common. It's a convention I use when I'm trying to create dimension on the page. Hopefully, the video helps you notice all the different nuances that happen in magazine design!

Amazing video brother your videos are pretty intelligent and you’re not giving bland advice like the rest of the design youtubers. I did wanna ask , how do you crop pictures instead of stretching them?

Thanks brother. If you use your selection tool (shortcut V), you can click in an image and crop as you need. If you use your direct selection tool (shortcut A), when you click and image it will select the image inside of the box and you can resize inside of your crop. I believe the shortcut to resize without distortion is Command + Shift and then resize as you need. Hope this helps!
