Mastering Balance in Graphic Design: Essential Tips & Techniques
Hello! I would like to hear your thoughts on my portfolio? I just finished it yesterday! For context I just graduated from University. Would love to hear your thoughts. My email is on there as well if preferred. Thank you :)
Great ideas.Thank you so much for the video! This reminds me of the "diverging" and "converging" explained in the "human-centered design thinking" approach. Diverging is the mindset that the sky is the limit for generating ideas [Plato's approach], and then converging is taking into consideration the restrictions of resources/time/money/technology/etc..., i.e. what is feasible, viable, applicable [Aristotle's approach]. The final design solution should be a balance of both.
Yes! You absolutely nailed it. Are you an HCI designer?
Rice is life❤
How do you create grid inside rectangle? Are you using illustrator or Indesign in this content?
I created it manually for the purposes of the video. I always use InDesign for layout!
this is my first time to be mentioned in a yt video lol, thank you for the great content again
You got it! Thanks for the continued support 🙏
This is great! Very easy to understand.
Thanks so much! 🙏🙏🙏
Man. I’m new to indesign. Photoshop seems like it can do everything this video shows without having to learn a new tool
I would agree that Photoshop can do everything in this video specifically, but it can’t do everything else that InDesign offers, so the benefit is having all the tools in one app vs doing color in Photoshop and then typesetting in InDesign. I know it’s a huge hurdle learn InDesign, but it would open up opportunity to work on a breadth of other projects. Photoshop still has a place in the workflow, but when it comes to layout design, InDesign is the most robust to work on any project.
Your content is truly top-notch! Any chance you could dive into more advanced topics in the future?
Thank you so much! Specifically in InDesign? or Design in general? Design is a little tougher... I can see why creators don't do it often. Let me know. I'll see what I can do!
This video is just WOW. Thank you so much for your efforts in making this for us.
Of course! I thought I got a little carried away on this one, but the work seems to have been worth it. Thanks for watching ❤️
Excelente 👌 ❤ gracias 😊
Thank you!!! I really love your videos on grids 😊
Thank you! I really need to get the full series up 🥹
Thank you for explained in details
Awesome! I nervous about this one, but it sounds like the explanations were enough?
Brilliant content, I really look forward to these. One question, what is the 'hero' content? Thank you!
It is the main content, or largest in hierarchy, similar to the hero section of a website!
Loving the flow and speed of the tutorial as usual. Really very informative! I'm not sure why my mind was waiting for a drop cap in the layouts though. 😄 Thanks for this Tirso!
Haha! I actually have a reasoning for this. When I work on my content, I try to strip it of as many design elements as possible so viewers focus on the topic, in this case grids. I could do an exploration of dropcaps… need think about that one. Oh and this is a larger reminder for me to get a newsletter out soon 🫣
@@tirsogamboa I'll be looking forward to that! I'm actually recommending your channel to my kids and colleagues! Keep it up bro! You're doing AWESOME! May I just add one more. Have you upgraded your video recording setup? Looks so sharp and Hi-res! Canon? Sony? It looks really good!😃😎
This was awesome! Can’t wait for the 3/6/8/12 grids and when to use each!
I’m going to think about 8 and 12 columns… they’re not usually grids that I suggest, but maybe I can come up with something!
Today I woke up and said: I want to learn more about grids today. Perfect timing, perfect video. Please do more of these!
I absolutely will! Thank you 🙏
Amazing video! please dont stop❤❤
I will! Finally getting into a groove of making videos 🙌🏼
what if there is 60 pages
It depends on the form your printer sets up. If they do 12 as I did in the video, they would just print 5 forms of 12 pages each and then bind them together at the end
Great video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
You got it, thank you for watching!
For you to take the time to critique portfolios is very kind of you! Love your videos! Thank you!
Thanks so much! Just trying to do my part in the design community ❤️
Totally fascinating how you came up with all the alternate designs. Learning so much from you, thank you!
WoWwW! Great designs and great way of teaching! Seems like the way you design is less cumbersome than using a baseline grid. This suits me fine as I do production layout and we don't usually have time to set up baseline grids at work. New sub, thank you!!
I've seen people default to always using a baseline grid, but I've only used them when I worked for a newspaper and the feature well of magazines. I still need to do a video on using column grids... Thank you so much for subscribing!
Congratulations! Cannot wait to see how this evolves, only getting better from here. Very inspiring! 🙌🏽😄
I'm excited, thanks for always supporting 🙏
Love this color on you!!! Also, this before and after is so good. Love that spam!🙌🏽😄
haha thank you!! I like the yellow polo as well! ❤️
Love your videos <3
I like your process!, Thank you
thanks so much!
Tirso! I vote for more of these, love hearing about your thought process now that I don't have the luxury of sitting next to you and learning from you. Also, should out to our Antigua trip.
Hi Shannon! Yes, one of the best trips to Antigua. One day... can we work together again?!
Hi what font didn't you use to Tyler alignment on your thumbnail? Thanks!
It is Ivar Display Condensed from Letters From Sweden foundry
Amazing video! please dont stop 🔥
Thank you!! I seem to have a cadence on the channel lately, so trying to carry it on. thanks for watching 🙏
Not sure if it was Robert Bringhurst but I'm most likely going to paraphrase here: 'a great FLRR should resemble a well-pinched pie crust'. Thanks again for the vids.
Oh, i'm familiar with that, but food is always a reference for type in my book!! ❤️
THIS IS REALLY HELPFUL! .... I AM SUBSCRIBING RIGHT AWAY
Thanks much and welcome to the channel! ❤️🙏
Really enjoyed this one and all the glasses! 🤓
Thank you!!! 🙏 how many of them did you choose for me? All of them? Haha
This was fun. More quizzes, please. Keeps us on our toes.
You got it! Now I just have to come up with more… 👀 I won’t let you down!
Tirso you are a gem, you have me arguing with my computer about the 1/2 and 1/3s squinting to see the exact measurement. Thank you.
Haha it takes time to “see” and it takes a little longer to be confident in what you see. I’m glad it was somewhat challenging. Thanks for watching 🙏
So, I just moved into the magazine team at work (yay me). I would really like to share my designs with you to help me become a better designer. The team only has a managing editor and an associate editor no other designer besides me. I have taken a lot of your advice and tried to implement them into my work. I am currently leaving the county but will return back. Let me know if you are still open to some mentoring sessions. I live in Ohio and would really appreciate some constructive feedback. Thanks!
First, congrats on the new job!! Pulling at my heart strings for a fellow magazine designer… I will make a one-time exception since you haven’t signed up for one. Send me an email and we can set it up. Have safe travels! 🙏
This video just eroded my confidence as a designer. Thanks!
NOOOO!!! That was not the goal! Oh man, there are enough struggles in the design career. The last thing I was is to spread any ounces or doubt. I think I’ll try to make this a regular video idea on the channel. You’ll get there!
@@tirsogamboa I actually thank you for shaking my confidence. I want to improve and I can only do so by going outside my comfort zone. Please do more of these. And could you provide me some resources for these kind of balance things? Like visual center stuff, please?
I always like your videos, very informative and helpful, thank you for sharing and keep it up.
Thanks so much! ❤️
As a graphic design student, I sometimes struggle with visual perception and feel hesitant to admit it. I truly appreciate how thorough you are in explaining your design decisions and the reasoning behind them. Your clear and detailed approach to design helps me a ton.
We all start somewhere! I’m not sure when, but eventually we get to the “I was blind, but now I see” stage and anything before is the past. I appreciate the feedback! Just trying to make design more approachable for everyone ❤️
How many different pairs of glasses did I wear in the video? And which one was your favorite?
5 pairs (not including the shades you clipped on) 😉
@@Yungsalt30 You were the only one responded!!! Thank you so much for doing the prompt. 🙏🙏🙏 Since no one else did the challenge, I will honor both mentoring sessions you! Please send me an email to get them set up! hello@tirsogamboa.com Can't wait to connect! ❤
I love the way you structured these videos! So clear and well-organized.
Thank you!!! 🙏
This is an excellent video! It's a great refresh of print production tips and I learned a couple news things.
Awesome! I’m leaning into more print design on the channel, so stay tuned ❤️
your videos are actually so amazing!!! my future career path and you’re breaking it down so well
Thank you so much! Trying my best here, just sharing knowledge as a designer for other designers 🙏
currently working towards a Creative Director career and this was such a cool insight into the job! thank you
I love that! You can do it ❤️
Galeng! Alam lahat ng mga fonts!
Salamat po! Importante na alam ko kasi it’s part of design!
Illustrator is totally fine as long as you know what to do. Only recommended for one or two page designs.
I think that limitation alone is why you shouldn’t be using illustrator. But I as I mentioned in the video, you can’t preflight images unless you do it manually, which can be time consuming. Maybe I ask, is there a reason why the greater majority of the print industry uses InDesign but you prefer illustrator?
Loved this explanation of step-by-step process.
I appreciate that. I should revisit more videos on the design process!
Thank you, it inspired me a lot!
Awesome thanks so much for watching! ❤️
Not needing to set up InDesign myself, just like to listen to you explain things. :D I appreciate your work 👍
That is SO sweet! Thank you so much for watching. 🥰
I’ve been away from YT for a while but now catching up on all your videos. Congrats on the continued success of your channel! Everything you post is extremely valuable!
So nice to hear from you again! I always appreciate your support. Hope to be in London sometime, let’s catch up!
Ngl, tirso your video its like millions subscribers level. I really appreciate your awesome work 🔥👍
A million subscribers would be an incredible achievement. For now, as long as the content gets to the right audience, I’m very happy with that. 🙏❤️
