Proper Release of the Clubhead in the Golf Swing

  • The release of the clubhead in golf is often misunderstood. Most teachers cannot even agree on the definition of the release.
I classify it as a supple whipping action of the wrists and forearms in a 180 degree semi circle with free acceleration and no impedance.
You simply cannot drive the ball nearly as far (or straight) without this method!
We should not try to hold the left wrist flat or delay the uncocking force in an attempt to steer the ball or mimic a photograph!
Nor is the release a passive torquing action. It is active, supplied by the forces generated by the wrist and forearm muscles and the straightening of the right elbow.

It’s amazing how much golf wisdom Mike Austin had back in those days.

Despite a right sided paresis, it was fortunate Mike did not lose his speech and was able to share his golf wisdom. God bless him. At 6:01 see the point of proper release.

Mike could still hit a 5 iron 140 in the air with just his left arm and no weight shift. It was truly a sight to see.

@@Inmotion70 Muscle memory or movement pattern so ingrained for the right and the left and though he lose control of the right, he was still able to hit that far. Amazing. Thanks for sharing. Subscribing.

This is the best explanation of the back swing ever!!! Once you get that position at the top of the back swing right, (like a waiter caring a tray) the downswing just works.
Played a 9 hole executive course today and hit 8 greens in regulation. Par was 28, I shot a 30. Fantastic swing lesson.

I've been studying the MA swing off and on for sometime. My best MA drive produced a 389 yd drive with a little downhill assist and 330-340 yd drives on average. Then I started to tinker with the swing and I was back down to 280 yard drives. This video is a true gem! Mike Austin succinctly explains the hand positioning in the backswing and follow through . The thing that brought "it all together" for me was his explanation of the release. Mike said you have to release the club "on plane". Lately I've been doing everything right until I got to the release of the club. Apparently I was releasing the club "off-plane" causing me to loss power and produce a fade. I think the whole ideal in the swing is to get into the positions within the swing to support a one piece, on-plane swing. Great video. Thanks!

I agree. Once I'm wound up like that at the top, there's very little to do except react. I'd still like to get my path and handle working more left but I cannot combine both ideas in one swing yet...my pea brain just doesn't have enough cubic cm.

Did I mention I’m 30 metres longer with the driver a week after watching all these #mike Austin hand arm forearms elbow release info ... everyone always says you swing it so good .. but I’m average distance and not consistent #notanymore .. I’m 40 and been playing since I was 21 and I know my next 20 yrs I’m going to be longer and better than in my 20s 🤝🤛🏻👏🏼👍

This motion sounds like "casting", which seems contrary to "lag". I've always been told that to get more distance I need more "lag", which whips the club head through contact.

Every description of what the many individual parts does in our swing that Mike's says in his videos are true. Except Mike failed to realize back then that as our body is made of two sides; one side pulls the club head back and the other side pushes the club back with equal power and strength. The problem with our primitive minds we can only sense our pushing motion or pulling motion in our body separately and never together.
With this in mind I simply pull my club back and naturally allow my body to respond pivoting with the direction and the power of dorsiflexing (bending)my right hand backwards . I reverse my downswing by pushing my club forward by palmar flexing( bending my right hand forward to the end of my swing. I swear it is that simple. Cheers. Think of the paint brush move with your right hand and arm going up and down . Now do the same move on a slanted golf plane.

Great description. Even the Austin 'throw' is a combination of push and pull forces. Cheers Thomas!

Hi Steve and thanks again for the video. So interesting although I'm still processing some of the points and descriptions. I've had the impression that You like to see a handpath lower and to the left after impact rather than up to the right as suggested here (with club pointing high left). Is there a conflict here, or maybe a confused misunderstanding on my part?? Thankfully as ever, Martin, Sweden

It's ok to go high left if you have the right side bend and low right shoulder through impact.
