Paul Leim was the reason I started learning drums aged 15 back in 1988, his work on the Amy Grant albums was inspirational.

This is unbelievable to hear Paul let that 'Episode ' out . Even after such Mishap , he became Immortal in the L.A. session Scene . I was always intrigued by reading his name in the credits through the 80's and very impressed with his performances on so many Tracks.

Well Mr. Leim was my Louis Bellson! When I picked up sticks and started learning to play in 1986 (by ear, self taught) I learned that the touring players were really good but it was the session players that I idolized. Eddie Bayers, Milton Sledge, Rick Marotta, Lonnie Wilson and Paul Leim. I can't read music but am familiar with the Nashville number system and can get through it if needed...all of that was stuff I read about while I was learning to play. At 13-14, I was reading liner notes to find out who played on the albums. Sledge, Bayers, and Leim have been such a huge inspiration through the years. I am truly grateful to have learned to play in the 80's, 90's and to this day.

I would love to hear your take on groove pocket feel
I wasted so many years playing live and not really understanding all that concept. Now I’m achieving the pocket at 65 years old for the first time pretty shocking, huh? You’re a stud Paul.

Great interview. Paul is so humble and real about his journey. It is so special when you hear musicians of this caliber, share their own stories of doubts about their ability, and you realize even the truly great players still can so it hard, but work to rise above it.

Thanks, Dom, for another fantastic interview! Been a huge fan of Paul for decades. Check his amazing variety of playing on Amy Grant’s album Straight Ahead. Interesting story: One evening I was sitting near the stage at the Opry. At one point I noticed a change in the drum sound and feel. I looked over and the first drummer had been replaced by Paul! The same drums, same venue, but Paul’s playing stood out that much!

The adulation for Louie was so great!! One of my very first inspirations was "Skin Deep". I must have listened to that 100+ times!! Also, the records that Paul has done the drumming on are magical!! A Collin Raye album called "I Think About You" shows Paul's magic. Saw Collin live later and missed Paul's drumming incredibly!!! One of the greatest grooves ever was "On the Verge" from that CD. The guy Collin brought on the road couldn't compare to Paul.

He was of course in awe with Louis bellson coming up an lift to top floor and thought was God Dom being tall was probably intimidated by a shorter drummer like buddy rich taller drummer's often scared of less tall drummer's because taller drummer's speak and move slower physically than shorter drummer's shorter drummer's speak sharply and quickly and usually have a better sense of fashion wearing trendy hats and eye 👁 glasses 🥂 👓 🕶 😎 😄
