i think what the girl had to say about the suicide rates, the social pressure and what the boy said about society's pressure to look a certain way and its following impacts on your mental health were also two truly pressing issues of south korea's current society. It's great to see that the Korean youth nowadays isn't afraid to question old values critically and publically speek up about them

Korea is a collectivist society with most of its ethical values focused on family. That being said, when a group or an individual starts to defy a norm or two, the whole culture becomes startled and alienates the group or individual. That would be the "old value" that you must be talking about. The young generations are rather afraid of stepping out because their upbringings in school and society have taught them not to raise individual issues against a larger group or the system. But since people are realizing such problems, I believe it is rapidly changing. Yet many people will not be that content with it, especially those who have power with the old conventional norms, like traditional patriarchs and current politicians in power. I know they will do anything to avoid changes and oppress individuals.

As a Korean-American who was born in Korean and living there for almost 7 years and coming to America and living in the US for now almost 10 years, I can agree with what all these students have said. Korea is honestly probably one of the most technologically advanced nation in the world, but with that comes so many consequences. I try to visit Korea every year and all the students I meet when I visit is having such a difficult time simply enjoying their life. They're so focused on their education and getting into the top universities (like that one student said) they don't enjoy their life. What I want to put out there I guess is if you don't like what you're doing right now, don't do it. You've gotta learn to enjoy what you're doing. If you like to study and like shoving your nose into books, then go right ahead! I envy you. I personally like traveling, taking photographs, spending time with friends, and simply living my life. If you don't enjoy what you're doing in life, stop it and find something that you like. Life's too short to do what your parents want you to do and do things that you won't enjoy in the long run!

You are right, but I feel kind of stuck in a way, because even though I may not enjoy my job, its my first Job with a Full time contract, and I have never earned as much money as I do currently, which enables me to buy pretty much what ever I like, however in order to improve my life, I need a better education, so I can have better job prospects, and I cant do that with out more time dedicated to education, and I'm 25 in a few days time, id love nothing more then to just keep travelling from one holiday to the next its also my passion, but at the same time I need money coming in, I remember being unemployed and its not nice.

Jim Hwang 안녕하세요 짐. Just wanted to say that's brilliant comment. And a question for you... What do you think is the biggest issue foreigners living in Korea might have on the start?

    • @JimHwang2018
      @JimHwang2018 7 років тому +1

I'm no expert and I might some stubborn and naive for many, but it really depends on what you like. Please don't take offense to this, but if you don't like your job, then why are you working in it in the first place? This might sound naive and dumb, but I believe you can both earn money and enjoy what you are doing at the same time. Of course, you are now a young adult (I'm 17) and have an entire life ahead of you, so this being your first job and you not liking is normal. But think about this when you're having doubts about your job: is it really worth it? am I going to work every day doing what I want to do? Or am i just going to work simply trying to make money and make my life better through money? Because I believe going to work every day for the sake of earning money is a fast road towards hating what you do.

I really loved this vlog, guys! I was encouraged to hear the one South Korean talk about how the next generation hopes to change their VERY intense education system (I know first hand about this since I have worked with Korean students who have come to the USA for high school). Also, I was glad to see that Sophie was gifted the phone. What an interesting time in Korea you have had. I hope to visit Korea soon. Was it hard finding vegan food there (like it was in China)?

Holy inspirational and motivational gatherings Dave & Louis! I might just think about traveling to interesting parts of the world to hear stories of those in different financial and social circumstances to hear them out on their struggles and success. Maybe even film videos where I would bring up something up that is natural in North America as opposed to the country or location I visit, to hear out their thoughts on those situations. If anyone does read this, I hope you're as inspired as I am by these two gentlemen to hear out those who need to be brought into light, and be noticed for doing good in this world.
    Live the adventure guys!

Hearing what was raised by those in Korea actually really relates to me, and I'm sure a lot of Singaporean students as well. Education and the obssession with success, and a specific type, can be suffocating for the young and growing generation. I think there has to be more support for different sorts of education and self-expression, especially when a country has developed a fair bit.

I arrived in Seoul in the fall of '78, shortly after the discovery of this tunnel and tensions were very high. Although I came to teach conversational English at a school I tried to explore the region. I was fortunate to get on a USO tour to the DMZ. The military were extremely strict about the taking of pictures and our deportment whenever we were within view of the North Korean guards. We were constantly photographed by them. Very unnerving but an amazing experience. Louis' video shows a new side of affairs but the undercurrent of questionable trust is still present.

It's so mind blowing to me how The Korean group is all about society pressure and that they have TOO MUCH education and have such little freedom with art, and happiness; but just a few days ago in India (I think), the problem was TOO LITTLE education, but the members there wanted to pursue careers in acting, singing, and dancing. It just kind of is opening my eyes to how diverse this world and this world's' issues are; it's far from black and white. This was a brillant meet up of some really cool adolescents, and every one who spoke, mentioned different, but equal important aspects about the korean society. Therefor i find the phone as a gift was the wrong way to appreciate someone's work. I am pretty sure, that there are better things to give away, because the whole thing isn't about materialistic things but about doing something to improve the cirumstances.
But despite a pretty inspirational episode :D

I've been to both the North and the South side of the DMZ, and actually, felt much more at ease on the North side. When you visit from the south, it is more formal, you have to dress a certain way, it seems less friendly. The North side is more casual, you can walk around the grounds and the buildings, and even take pictures with a North Korean soldiers. Of course, in the North, there are other places you must dress up for (the mausoleum housing the bodies of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il, for instance), but the DMZ was much more relaxing from the North.

Blame china. A single Korea with America as their ally is a threat to China's dominance in the region. Saying that, China would NEVER allow regime change.

+John M think differently. at first, only russian air troops engaged. truth is USSR highly supporting kim, not newborn China (cuz they just too busy to look after themselves at that point). and chinese PLA were not participating korean war until nov, while kim's regime was dying. also, Mao is one of the leader who against war as well.

+John M It is an active problem for international politics :/ probably the only two options I can see being plausible is: 1) Regime change to a China-friendly but more modern government (that won't scream "nukes!") or 2) a unified, demilitarised Korea :/

+John M I think it's not China or Russia who should be blamed for North Korea. We should go back to World War II to know. It was Japan who tried and invaded Korea and China, and used many Korean men as frontliners for its campaign to take over the neighboring countries. The imperialistic and authoritarianism ideologies imposed by Japan to these two countries remained even though Japan has changed its ways now, especially with North Korea.

we have tunnels like that here in our country, built by Japanese during WW2. i guess tunnels are really a part of their strategy. there are some that are even bigger than the one you've visited, but most of it are now flooded.

I read a really interesting book recently about a real teacher from the US moving and working at a school in North Korea. It was so interesting bc it's all about the limitations which she (the teacher) experienced and how the teenage boys there are basically taught to love their leader and never question anything. VERY interesting book, called "Without You, There Is No Us" check is out if you're interested in this conflict!
