Speaking as a singer, you really must give Saiki way more respect. Saiki is an extraordinary woman. Holy Shit!...This Band! They inspire me and fill me with such JOY!
I enjoy the figuring it out parts. Other musicians 'go away' to figure it out and come back - this feels more real, even if chaotic at times. With Band Maid, the nature of the Beast. This is by no means a tutorial, but is something I can even come back to as I start to hear different things, or just for the fun of seeing Ryan struggle with a smile on his face.
Giovanni, the song with so many places of anticipation in the song. After listening to it several times you know when those cool changes are coming, Giovanni is a musical journey. Thanks for the deep dive!
"Giovanni" is a character in a Japanese novel "Night on the Galactic Railroad" who literally journeys by train through the galaxy. There is a movie version of it available on YT.
Nice!. Yeah, this song deserves an in deep listening. The instrumental version helps a lot to comprehend the complete song. A masterpiece. Good job Mr. Mear!, a really difficult one.
So you just compared my first love in metal, the first metal band I listened to, and my all-time music love band, in the best possible manner. That took me by surprise, but wow, that was a comparison! Thank you for that
Awesome vid Ryan & i hope you had a great Thanksgiving. I heard you made a fantastic gravy with the giblets but B-M are the perfect Thanksgiving recipe :)
Another deep dive! I love it when you get into the nitty gritty of all things Band-Maid. Giovanni is one of my favorite songs on the Unseen World album, and you did it justice Ryan!
Great video, hope you weren't holding your breath for that deep dive. There's the instrumental version of this song that might help a bit with trying to figure out that they're doing. I read somewhere (maybe an interview) that Giovanni is based off of a classic Japanese novel from the early 1900's, something about a fisherman.
I watched that anime. It's rather unusual, nothing like any Western cartoon. The Japanese do have this sort of animes, which I call "travelling and sightseeing and meditating." It's like a lot of beads on a thread, they follow each other and seem at first unrelated. But in the end, you find yourself sitting there crying God knows because of what.
I think Giovanni might be the perfect capsule exemplifying Band-Maid at this moment. Almost every expected BM element is in there somewhere. Also "So What is Life?" and "Nothing I can do to help you" are two of the most iconic BM lines ever, especially the way they are presented in this song. That whole verse ( I guess it's a verse, who can tell) starting with "I don't know, still, I wanna see, when will this end? to be continued" ending with "Nothing I can do to help you" might be my favorite Band-Maid passage, ever, especially followed by that nasty groove.
That was great, Ryan! It was really interesting when you were playing the chords and they took over the song; it got me wondering what it would sound like if you took out all the Band-Maid stuff and made it more of a typical song. I'm glad you chose this one to do a deep dive. Impressive therapy session, btw.
You know Ryan it was really great and really human thing...I allmost have same feeling and atmospher as with my friends when they jamming with guitar on summer time in the garden. We drink wine talk a lot and laughs. It was a same trip with my fav band and you .Thanks man...becouse this fuc.ing pandemic...this kind joy...just disappear from my life...Happy Thanks Giving :)
Fun seeing you on Wave's stream tonight. I'd meant to comment here yesterday but got distracted. I actually watched through where you basically challenged us not to fast forward. It was fun watching you work through it. Thanks for the entertainment.
Very inspiring! Man, I need to be more consistent with my guitar practice. Gave me quite a bit of motivation. Loved the video, especially the part where you talked about Akane, you put it well into words what I like about her. Her whole demeanor combined with her originality, her beats get me moving like none other! I just can't get enough of this band lol
If you have a chance, check out their instrumental version. Their instrumentals can be standalone because of how they construct their songs. According to the members, Kanami creates an instrumental shell, Akane makes the rhythm, Saiki develops the melody based on the rhythm, Miku writes the lyrics, and Misa freestyles the accents. No wonder a lot of reactors comment on their cohesiveness. Listen to a song and it's like each member is doing their own thing but somehow the voices and instruments unify. No one steps on each other's toes.
Kanami actually lays out the song entirely, including drum patterns and melodies for vocals. She says she leaves MISA to do whatever she wants! Of course tweeks and adjustments are made by all members and collaborated!
@@RyanMear That's true...only on Giovanni each member did their part. Chemical Reaction was composed by Misa and Corallium was written by Saiki...the rest is composed by Kanami and the lyrics were written by Miku.

Those and the self-covers on Prime are great for learning their songs! But, yeah, I always learned by ear... the interesting thing is that it was always enough until now. Kanami is such a different player!
