"Journalist": Explorers say they definitely found Earhart's plane. The measurements are exact. Explorer: We believe it may be Earhart's plane. The measurements are close.
Since I was a kid, I've heard stories about Amelia Earhart. Stories that she ditched in the sea, crash landed on Howland Island, or she was shot down by the Japanese, or captured on an island that she crashed landed on by the Japanese held captive then executed and buried and a number of other stories including that she went into hiding. They may have found Earhart's Lockheed Electra Aircraft. But until they bring up and positively identify that is is the Earhart aircraft we will never know for sure. So far everything is based off of a blurred sonar image. It might be an aircraft or it could be something else that the sonar image looks like one, This has happened many times on other things they were looking for. But one has to remember, her disappearance happened in July 1937, just 3 years and 4 months later Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese and America was thrown into WWII. Japan had started to expand its territory about 1904 with the Japanese-Russian War and started to expand and build on Pacific Islands by 1931. At that time there were many uninhabited islands that would becom strategic places that could be forward locations to house troops, become forward supply bases, ship harbors, refueling bases, ship repair, submarine facilities, Seaplane facilities and if big enough for a runway to have aircraft stationed. So if this is an aircraft on that sonar image, it could be a number of civilian and military aircraft. Lockheed developed off of the Model 10 Electra and made the Model 14 Super Electra to compete in the commercial airline industry. This was a slightly scaled up version of the Model 10 that held 10 passengers to hold 14. Lockheed built a total of 354 Model 14 Super Electra here in the US for commercial use. When WWII started the Super Electra was sold and many were modified for US military use as well as export versions for the Allies. They were used for training, transport, reconnaissance and combat as well. One being the Hudson Bomber that was developed from the Super Electra. However Japan was also licensed to build the Lockheed Super Electra and built many more both for commercial use as well as military use. All together there were thousands of Lockheed Electra type aircraft built. In addition to that, after the war many of these aircraft found their way into many civilian hands all over the world for both private and commercial use. So until they are able to bring up the aircraft or a number of parts with good serial numbers that can positively identify it as Earhart's aircraft, it could be anything. For one I hope it is Amelia Earhart's aircraft so all of this can come to an end and let her rest in peace.
