    How does this compare to the 7-14mm f2.8 lens? 👉 ua-cam.com/video/apM8aTgKXsI/v-deo.html

    My 7-14 was more or less redundant because I was not prepared to pay for a specialist mount. I will buy one of these as soon as possible. The 72mm filter size is the same as my 12-100mm and 100-400mm so three lenses cover all of the focal lengths I need. High ISO noise, hah, just Topaz it.

      I have the 12-100 as well and it's crazy sharp. Can't wait to use that one as well as the new lens 8-25 with their newest camera, which will hopefully be the em1 mark4. 24 megapixel with increased dynamic range and one or two extra stops ISO.
      Does Topaz increase dynamic range? I have thought about buying it a couple times but I already have Adobe and not sure if I can justify getting more programmes

    An excellent lens! I will order mine as soon as possible. I find it interesting that photography professionals, like Peter, have to repeatedly highlight the virtues of an f4 lens! Interestingly, most spectators and amateurs have no remark or restrictions regarding the use of non-constant aperture lenses (for example 3.5-5.6, etc.), but are concerned about f4 constant aperture lenses! Hard to understand! In addition to its compact size, an f4 lens is perfectly suited, and desirable, for Landscape, travel, real state, among others. I believe that people are realizing that you don't always need and want Bokeh! You don't always need a fast lens! In many situations the portability, usability, durability of a lens, aimed at photographs that need large areas in focus, are the virtues and the necessary characteristics! These generalized hypes are incredibly damaging to the diversity of the photographic world. Many youtubers and influencers want to generalize and reduce the world of photography to Bokeh and fast lenses!!

    • @matsneander4595
      @matsneander4595 3 роки тому +2

      Agree fully, except for one thing:
      ALL lenses have "bokeh"!
      The only thing that differs is how the bokeh looks! Bokeh is not the same as "short Depth Of Field", it´s how the unsharp part of an image is looking, "how the blur looks", simply put. Different lenses do render the out of focus areas in different ways, not related to the aperture value itself, since lenses do render the un focused areas different even when the aperture value and focal length are the same.

    • @TITAOSTEIN
      @TITAOSTEIN 3 роки тому +2

      @@matsneander4595 “All lenses have Bokeh” - But not every picture (Landscape photography needs everything in focus)! And the “Bokeh Hype” makes many people believe, that Bokeh is always desirable!

    • @matsneander4595
      @matsneander4595 3 роки тому +2

      @@TITAOSTEIN You are talking about the "short depth of field is next to mandatory"-hype, a hype which I most certainly agree is there.
      Though: Every image, possibly except for those with "full depth of field", "those shot at the smallest aperture openings, like 16, 22 or so", have some kind of bokeh. What you referred to as bokeh hype is simply "short depth of field hype".
      I think we in essence do think the same, but use different wording.
      Thanks for replying!

    • @axelmols1778

      Regarding depth of field. I have tried many times to take street shots at f1.8 with my 45mm and in the end only portraits really look amazing at f1.8. f4-f7.1 is what is needed for that which is f8-f14 in fullframe terms (correct me if i am wrong). The result will be better

This fits perfectly into a a Pro Zoom Trilogy, an in my case would be this lens, 12-40mm 2.8 Pro and the 40-150mm f/2.8 Pro. I'm in - I've been looking forward to this!!

      I have been pondering the 8-18 for quite a while now. I do prefer the ability to put a regular filter on the lens, so the 7-14 has been a hard sell. All the way to 25? Probably a bit redundant for eh overlap to my 12-40. F4 constant? Not the most desirable, but certainly livable for the tradeoffs involved. Pro feature set, yes please. Funny thing that was unclear and concerning to me, Panasonic does not say the 8-18 seals to "MFT mounts"...implication that it might not seal on an Olympus, or not as well as to their own brand. I know that is a very paranoid interpretation, as all MFT mounts should be fully interchangeable. But it is one factor that has kept me on the fence. This could easily be the side I fall on.

  • @LeoSavantt

    I have been waiting for this one as a partner to the 12-100 and the 45mm F1.2. Now that DXO Pure Raw does such a good gob raising the ISO a little doesn't matter so much, so F4 is not really a concern at these versatile focal lengths. Wide angle to standard focal lengths in a relatively light high quality weather sealed pro lens, a compelling reason to stay with MFT.

  • @sstansm7f

    Thanks Peter! It's good lens for mounting hiking. First, when you on trail it's often impossible to change point of view and changing focal length is the only way to frame the image and create composition. Second, when in mountains you always have mountains as a background and if you want to photograph some interesting artefact such as stone, freaky tree typical on the ridge, old dead tree or lying dry trunk on wide angle one can include both the whole subject and background mountain view in the image. The third argument: in film times the zoom lenses had poor performance that's why photographs had to keep 16-20 mm prime lenses. Nowadays super wide angle primes from 24 mm and shorter does not make much sense to own. It's more reasonable to have one zoom lenses for wide angle photography.

    I am a nature photographer and plan to use this lens for landscapes. I want the capability of using a polarizer and ND filter together. I will test the lens with 2 filters attached and see which filter size will not vignette with the lens at 8mm. I will use a step-up ring with these filters. I agree with your comment about trying to use BIG filters with the Olympus 7-14 - very difficult to shoot with and need a large bag to carry those big filters. The 8-25mm lens is shipping in early July in the U.S.

    It seems to be a good addition to the olympus lens lineup. I personally don't like the retraction mechanism, it's one more step before having your camera ready to shoot. The 14-42 kit lens has the same mechanism (+button) and used to be the reason I have missed some good shots. The Lfn button is always welcomed.

    Thanks a lot Peter.
    When Olympus announced the 8-25mm last summer, I knew I was going to buy this lens (order made). I expected the same quality as the other Pro lenses, but the main reason is the huge range for a wide-angle zoom. Fortunately, you can also screw filters on, it is relatively not heavy and the price is not too bad for me.
    I will mainly be using the lens for street photography in geometry and landscape.

Im buying into olympus from my old pentax k-5 especially because I need something small to package on long weekend trips via train and/or bicycle to tour around europa. So this lens seems perfect. I won't be that much out in the dark, and if I do, I don't think the f4 will worry me that much. I will perhaps add a prime around 70-135mm equiv. when I find some details that a 50 is too wide for.

    Thanks for the review Peter. This new lens from OMDS looks excellent and is a great option for landscapes where lens changing can be risky e.g. wet weather and seascapes. I will probably stick with my 12, 17 and 25mm Zuiko primes as the f1.8 - f2.0 max apertures provide the best balance between size, cost and image quality.

Still angry that they did not, or have not, updated it to the R II design. Love this new lens. But. There's no way this lens replaces the 9-18. The 9-18 and the 14-42 are so lightweight they are perfect for me for everyday carry.

    I guess I should have waited and not purchased the 8mm f1.8 fisheye...if I didn't have that, I would definitely consider this one. However, I will probably keep it and get a 12-40 f2.8 (which I still have not purchased). I think most of my pictures would fall in the 12-40mm range. An occasional interior (churches, museums, etc.) and star photography will be the main use of the 8mm. I do like the f1.8 aperture on that...and would like the f2.8 for street and night photography. Great first impression video of the 8-25/4.0 lens. I got one on pre-order. It will basically replace my 7-14/2.8 lens. My 7-14/2.8 lens usually stays home unless I know I will use it. This is because of its bulk, needing special filter holder (more bulk) and how easy it flare. The 8-25/4.0 looks to be a lens that will stay on the camera unless I need something else. I see it more for my nature-landscape walk about lens.
    I usually have the digital focus limiter assigned to the lens function button.
    I can really see a 25-150/f4.0 Pro lens to pair up with the 8-25/4.0 lens.
    For astro-landscape I will use the 8/1.8 lens or it will be the special case for packing the 7-14/2.8. I really wish for something like a 10/1.4 for astro-landscapes.
    It is great to see that OMDS is releasing products.
    As for the E-P7 it is a cute camera. I really believe the Pen F was originally going to be names E-P6 but was changed to Pen F later in its development stage.

    I have had the 7-14 mm for a while but find it seriously compromised because it can't take filters without a ludicrously bulky adaptor. The 8-25 shares the same caliber as my my other work-a-day day lenses, and accepts all the 72 mm filters, which fit it perfectly into my work flow. Definitely on my shopping list. The loss of one stop shutter speed is neither here nor there.

    I was waiting for this lens. 99% of all time when I have my camera (Pen-F) on me, I don't carry an additional lens. So I pick a lens for the environment I'm heading to. The 8-25 will be my hiking and landscape lens. The 12-45 mm is the default lens on my camera and is used for family gatherings, parties, portraits or when I'm taking pictures in cities. Additionally I use the 60mm for macros and scanning, and the 100-400mm when I'm off to a zoo or planning for wildlife or sports photography. I have the 45 1.2 for available light photography, but I'm planning to replace this with a 17mm lens, since most times when I'm in available light situations it's in-house and 45mm is to long for this. I'm not decided yet, if I'll get the 1.2 or the 1.8, but I'm tending towards the 1.8 because of its size and weight. I also have a 45 1.8, which I use for evening-events with stages, when I've sold the 1.2 lens.

    Hi Peter. Interesting and very versatile lens. Since I already have the Panasonic 8 - 18mm lens with f2.8 to f4, I probably will not be buying this lens as I already have the range covered. You asked about the use of the Fn button on a lens. Well since the Olympus 150-400mm pro lens does not have a manual focus clutch I have assigned the Fn button next to the focus ring to MF with peaking and magnification. This gives a quick switch from the C-AF + MF. Interestingly if a back button focus is used there is an extremely useful option. Set the lens Fn button to MF and engage accordingly giving a MF with peaking and magnification. If you then press the back button focus button you get AF. Extremely useful !! This enables me to zoom in on say a bird with my finger on the back button giving immediate AF on the bird. Releasing my finger from the back button focus then reverts to the MF with peaking and magnification and fine tuning on the bird is then possible for a pin sharp image. I am not aware that any other camera manufactures have this feature ?? Just got to get my head round pressing the right button at the right time especially when the camera is set to ProL capture and you still have to press the shutter button half way to get the pre shutter images. Nice video clip as always 😊😊

    I never minded the unlocking of the 9-18 mm lens. That I will keep because it’s so tiny and still good. Only for landscape I got the Laowa 10 mm. The new Olympus lens has a strong competitor which is the Lumix 7-14 mm - a very good and reasonable Compact lens.

      My 9-18 was fairly old when I sold it and I became very really worried about the reliability of the locking mechanism. I stored it uncollapsed. The extra length was very insignificant.

  • @gusng695
    @gusng695 3 роки тому

    Originally, I expected this lens is a much smaller lens than the old 7-14mm, maybe just more or less like the concept of the 12-45mm. That would really be great for outdoor use. But the consideration now is, its direct competitor is the Pana 8-18mm which has a weight 100g less. To compensate, the Oly brings 7mm more on the tele instead of 1mm less on the wide. Other than these, two lenses have the rest functionally the same. Although Pana's is faster on the wide with f/2.8, it doesn't much useful in landscape where f/5.6 to 11 are normally used most of the times. Only in stars taking, this f/2.8 might have some advantages. At this point, it seems that Pana's is more useful in landscapes and for those who hikes a lot and need a lighter weight. Oly's new lens might be better for street and city-scapes where sometimes a longer tele side would be handy.

    Great Review, Peter!
    I have the 12-100mm which ios also a 72mm filter thread so when i saw this one is similar I was pleasantly suprised. One of my first lenses was the 9-18mm whihc turned out to be quite poor compared to the pro lenses. I often use my 12-100 even if I need much wider than 12mm due to lack of weather sealing and the poor quality of the 9-18. This 8-25mm seems like the PERFECT focal length and is by far the most interesting lens Oly has to offer in my humble opinion.
    The reasons i didn't get the 7-14: too heavy, too expensive, no filter, focal length 7mm is great but 14mm isn't far enough.
    The only thing I dislike is the fact I cannot really use this lens for night photography.
    If I one day get to the Nordic part of Europe I might need to get a cheap manual focus ultra wide for that? Not sure?
    Ah yes, and I would use this lens for interior work like museums as well as photo stacking nature images of forest scenes at 8mm. Honestly can't wait to get this lens

    I pre-ordered the 8-25mm today and will receive it the 8th of July, here in Paris ! Why ? I was waiting for it for months now, as soon as it was on the Olympus lens roadmap, because, given it's focal range, it was clear it should be the unique lens to take with you on hiking for landscape photography or for a tourist tour downtown. I have the 12-100mm but it is a little too bulky and in fact I do not use so much the long end of this lens. In fact, I bought some time ago the Laowa 7.5 because sometimes shooting very wide is very cool, , especially on hiking (but still staying rectilinear because fisheye is a little too much, the Samyang 7.5mm was nice until the Laowa exists). Also, I often prefer more environmental portraiture at 25mm or even 17mm than classical one at 45mm. In that case you do not want to blur too much the background. And if you want to take a portrait with two or more people, 25mm or less is just right. So the 8-25mm is, for me, more versatile than a 12-40mm, 12-45mm or even 12-100mm. As I also have 45mm (Pana f1.7) and 75mm (the so nice Olympus gem) primes, I am really considering selling, surely the 7.5mm, and probably the 12-100mm. But I will keep my 12mm for video (you need to be wide enough, the 12mm prime is lighter if you hold the camera and F4 at 12mm does not allow to blur enough the background for vlogging for example) and also the 17mm F1.2 for it's low light and shallow depth of field capability (and it's so special, like the 75mm f1.8). I'm just a little concerned about the size of the 8-25mm : it will be fine with the E-M1 series, but perhaps a little too big with my PEN-F, although I have a plate with a grip.

    I bought the 12-45/4 when it came out in the winter of 2020 -- picked it up ca. March 25, 2020 -- during the start of the pandemic. The 8-25/4 looks nice. However, I have rarely felt the need for a wider angle than 12 mm, and there is too much overlap in range between the 12-45 and the 8-25 -- so I doubt I'll get the new one. Also, the 12-45 is markedly smaller and lighter.
    I'd guess realtors/people taking pictures of the interior of houses could use a wide angle. But for that use, perhaps an f2.8 is better?

    • @ForsgardPeter

      Hard to say. For me f2.8 zooms lenses are not great for anything today ... well, maybe for video. For something like landscape or city I use f5.6 to f8 and IBIS can handle longer exposure so I prefer longer zoom range to aperture. When I want to play with depth of field, I use prime lenses. Same with social events (when they exist). Otherwise combination of IBIS and IS makes zoom lenses viable even in low light, especially with wide angle lenses.

    I wish panasonic or olympus give us a 10-25mm in the form factor os the pana 12-32mm. That paired with a rangefinder style camera is the perfect size for travel. I could be 4-5.6. For travel, convenience is key. This 8-25 and that 10-25 1.7 make no sense for travel or casual shooting. Both are too big and too heavy to balance well on small bodies - the reason I went to m43 is size and weight.
