Something else too Is that Goku didn't really want to become a super saiyan. It was like just a legend to him and he was just learning to accept that he was a saiyan to begin with. Makes it even more impactful when he obtains it, because it's like he's fully accepting his rage/saiyan side.
This personal prefence and not on G5. Devil fruit awakenings happen because the wants/personality of the fruit match that of it's users. Kaido's personality and that of his fruit don't match hence why he was never able to awaken it
No he's not, that's the equivalent of saying "head that direction it's a quick road to get to your destination" then they head that way and that person you directed gets shot. It wouldn't be your fault.
The biggest issue I have with the Nika retcon is that it was completely unnecessary. The Gomu-Gomu no Mi could have just been a completely typical, unassuming paramecia fruit like it always had been, Gear 5 could have been the devil fruit awakening like everyone expected, and all the connections to Joyboy could have been entirely thematic, non-literal connections, and the audience would have completely accepted that. People were already predicting that the awakening for the Gomu Gomu no Mi would allow Luffy to rubberize his environment, no Sun God retcon needed. It would have fit better into the narrative, it would have made more sense thematically, it would have preserved the underdog nature of Luffy as someone who mastered a normal (even kinda lame) devil fruit power, and would have just been a better story overall. I genuinely can't understand why Oda felt the need to do this retcon in the first place.
I gotta disagree completely Gear 5 is a representation of Luffy officially becoming a symbol of liberation is which, whether you agree with the decision or not you can’t say it’s better thematically. A man who fights for freedom dying and being reborn as a god of freedom is arguably only acceptable if the story runs off of thematics
If we take this kind of thinking then we'll be completely ignoring how this "unimportant" devil fruit was not only wanted by a yonko but it was also guarded by the marines.

I’m so glad someone pointed this out. I’ve heard so many people defend Gear 5 by comparing it to the super saiyan transformation. They aren’t in any way similar. I still like Gear 5 as a concept, but the build up was literally non existent.
I think it works as this silly Loony Tune character fighting a serious character like Kaido. But narratively it sucks. Super Saiyan changed Goku's personality. Only a pure hearted person can accomplish a feat of Pure Anger. Freeza created his own worst enemy. I feel like Luffy should have just gotten more angry during the Wano Arc before realising he should stop taking everything too seriously. Making Luffy at his strongest when he is a silly rubber man.

As i've said in another video. Both forms are just the character's best aspects taken into a massive extent. Luffy turning things to rubber in Gear 5 basically embodies his joy and goofy sense while Super Saiyan is Goku's pure heart and saiyan rage coming to terms with one another to create something greater. Both their symbolisms are insanely great and nothing to crap at but it's clear which one was better at reveal and execution

Similar to that, before Wano, it was just shown that Luffy inherited Joyboy's will, not that he was literally the sun god Nika.

I remember knowing that the specific panel with the pose was like oda's favorite panel, so as soon as I saw nika I thought "oh of course, oda is making a reference to his favorite panel", people be wanting to call everything foreshadowing xD.
Let's just actually appreciate Akira Toriyamas creative genius. He made a ridiculous retcon "They were Aliens" actually work. Goated artist. So glad to experience his style of writing. When Dragonball story was ongoing the "twists" weren't that huge. They were interesting but the implications were pretty short lived. The story is primarily just Kid Goku trying to find Dragonballs and us witnessing his struggles while doing so. So the twists were pretty campy. "Oh no Goku can go feral" "Matser Roshi has a disguise" "Demon King Piccolo is now back". They were pretty important moments but they never had major implications as to where the story should be going. Goku was always more interestes in his own goals too which made that feel a lot more natural to not over focus on every little twist in his adventure. In One Piece however they really want you to sit there a sherlock holmes every implication from their vague hints. It makes anything they say more open to scrutiny because now we're trying to uncover a mystery rather than witnessing a narrative unfold.

It's less that I wanted/expected it go go a certain way, it's just that Oda is so good at world building and foreshadowing, that most small mishaps/inconsistencies are 'weird but whatever'. Having his fruit not be the useless gum fruit nobody wanted but a legendary god without any signs of backing it up until right that point is just... Bad. Without going to hard into the lore, it's pretty clear that he is the next Nika/Joyboy spiritually, he does what they did without realizing it which is fine, but giving him god powers is just sad, I hate when this happens, same in Naruto where is just hated the whole Ninja Jesus aspect.(That series is a whole different rant) The way the Nika Transformation aka Gear 5 triggered also felt pretty anticlimactic for me. All that said, don't let this bother you, most things in OP are absolutely great, with such a huge overarching story it's normal to have some irregularities here and there
I feel like gear 5 was just introduced poorly. Oda didn’t want to kill of Luffy or kill him off for too long so now he’s suddenly awakened his devil fruit at his fullest potential
I always used to praise One Piece’s writing. It wasn’t perfect, but the world building and foreshadowing kept me invested. After gear 5, it just feels like any other shonen manga and I hate that. Also I didn’t expect the Yugioh music at the start. You have good taste. I love all the music from that specific game.

Post Dressrosa One Piece feels like a completely different series, it feels like Oda has no restrictions and just adds whatever he wants with no push back from editors even at the detriment of the story, it really feels like Oda has surrounded himself around a bunch of yes-men while Toriyama was always pressured by his editors to make the story more interesting and dynamic.

The point is highlighted pretty well throughout the video. The Super Saiyan segment was pretty easy to understand, but with Gear 5 I almost had a stroke trying to comprehend it all.
I agree with the events leading up to G5 being rather lackluster. This is why people argued that the raid should have failed so we get a sense of harrowing loss before the epic comeback. But we never got that. Luffy wasn't even dead for the whole chapter before he came back.
You're not the crazy one-the truly concerning ones are the One Piece cult. These people blindly consume and accept whatever is thrown their way, convinced that the author can do no wrong. One Piece has plenty of flaws, and the deeper this story continues, the worse its likely to get.

He reminds me of people in the fighting game community that make the most of and fully utilize their lower tier character in a world of broken top tiers and gear 5 is like if oda said "f*ck it, he's tier wh*ring for a top 5 character."

Its litterally the power of *his* imagination, besides its not like he'd be anywhere near the ranks of a top tier without his haki being up there aswell. From g3 and onward was where luffy's awakening started to truly manefest as there's no logical way to explain how and what he's doing to his body.
Around 1:33 What are you trying to imply with this, because i will tell you this, there are hint everywhere on Bleach to Ichigo being a hybrid of all type of Spiritual compositions, heck, Tite Kubo had so clear the plans for Ichigo, that when we just knew he had a Human soul which posess Shinigami and Hollow powers, he made the mistake of writting that Ichigo was the son of a "Shinigami and..." on the official release on the magazine, when Ichigo was suppose to witness for the first time that his father was a Shinigami and he had those powers from birth... Making people that read this on the original publication before it was corrected on the tome release, where it said "Human and..." cuts to Isshin appearing as a Shinigami, think that there was something more about Ichigo's mother, making people think that she was Quincy... Which surprise turn out to be truth, in fact, it was this mistake and the fact that in the manga Yhwach looked so much like Old Man Zangetsu that made fan realize and it wasn't a just wild theories, it could be real, before we read The Blade and Me 2 and The Blade is Me, so this wasn't an asspull. Tite Kubo is the kind of writer that likes people trying to pierce together the story on their own, so he just leaves small hints to big developments, for example, Ichigo household was full with hint to the number 10, which made people think before the release of everything but the rain that Isshin was the captain of the 10th division, Ichigo's bed has the Quincy Cross on his bed sheets, which is what lead to people thinking about his mother being a Quincy thanks for that mistake i mention above. You can see a frown in the reflexion on the Blade that the Hollow inside of Ichigo when he was taunting him at one point, while there was a smile on his face, etc. There are a tons of this small signs of foreshadowing on Bleach, and they aren't to be diverse or something like that, they are with great meaning, for example, since Ichigo's journey is base on Shinto mythology, you can find a lot of hints on the worlds and races of Bleach to this different paths, and the reason to why Ichigo is like he is, it's because his path of self actualization and character completion requires him to accept all of this different sides of him. Making him face the best and worse of himself.
As a diehard one piece fan I do agree the execution could’ve been a lot better, most definitely on fishman island where Nika could be in full swing though it’s definitely much more of a thematic build up rather than a story one

He used to be, but he has gotten incredibly lazy for the past decade, surrounded by yesmen no doubts, with the exception of Whole Cake which was actually a really cool blending of genres with a nice story full of twist and a genuinely good romance, almost everything he has done since the end of Marineford has been just ..... baffling, almost every arc falls catastrophically short and the only thing he has been good at is promising that things will be interesting later on

The whole Nika thing was such an obvious ass pull it's crazy lmao. Okay, so they knew rubber = nika the whole time? Why did they not send elite forces against Luffy immediately? This guy became famous relatively quickly yet this was never brought up. When was the gum gum fruit ever hinted at giving you more than just stretching your body? The thing with one piece discourse online is that there's too much glaze for Oda. I don't know what it is, maybe it's sunk-cost because the story is so long, but so much of the fanbase bends over backwards to defend obvious flaws in the writing. It's so weird because other writers like toriyama and kishimoto get flamed or just outright called bad. Like compare gear five to super saiyan, a transformation hinted at throughout the entire arc brought about by poetic irony: Frieza feared the super saiyan but he brought it into existence through his own pride and cruelty. On top that, the transformation is the completion of goku's arc he started in the saiyan saga, first he denied he was a saiyan at all, then half-heartedly accepted it, then in against frieza declares himself both a saiyan and a earthling, the legendary super saiyan. Luffy really didn't go through much of a developmental arc through wano, it's more character constancy than anything which is fine but for a transformation isn't enough for me. They could have done something with Luffy's perspective about how joy and freedom relate to build up the transformation, I mean they even had the whole "smile fruit" thing going so it would make sense thematically. But, there wasn't much of that. I'm sorry, but ssj is not only stronger, but it just clears from a writing standpoint like i can't believe this is what people were saying was "the most iconic transformation ever" Edit: you can spot some of the one piece fans I'm talking about in a few of the replies here
... Okay, I'm just gonna wreck your entire argument with two words. Dragon Ball. Everything that happened in Z and onwards is a massive retcon to take a story clearly inspired by mysticism and the Journey to the West and turn it into an intergalactic battle where Goku is an alien. That was not planned, it was not hinted at. The entire Saiyan arc, is as you say, an ass pull to extend the series. Your other opinions on it not being earned, etc, are just that, opinions.
In all fairness G5 didn’t actually give Luffy any special abilities he didn’t have prior so your whole “When was it said it could do more than make you rubber” is kinda baseless. Red Hawk existed and Luffy tanked Enel’s lightning. Paramecia’s have always had the Awakened Effect of turning anything you touch into your respective property, and since Gomu was always stated to be a Paramecia prior to the reveal, it’s a given that Luffy would get those properties. Luffy grabbing Lightning from the sky isn’t a new ability, rubber is an insulator, electricity cannot easily pass through it, so it makes sense that an awakened Gomu could grab lightning. To “counter” your point as to why Luffy wasn’t just outright killed by the WG’s elite forces, well, enter Shanks, Garp, and Dragon. Dragon is the leader of a force that has opposed the WG for a very long time. Shanks is not only the most feared Pirate in the verse, but more than likely the strongest character in the verse. Whilst nothing directly supports it, it is very easy to say that Shanks and Dragon at the very least would step up to avenge Luffy, even if news of his death and/or capture would arrive very late. Shanks wanted the Gomu to explicitly hide it from the WG, no doubt he’d book it to them if they got their hands on it. Also, you’re thinking abt Luffy’s connection to the reveal in a very shallow sense. Luffy being connected to Nika so literally IS a massive asspull, however Nika has years of lore built up around him throughout multiple arcs in the series, and the one character who has always stood by those values and uttered them openly was always Luffy. Luffy has ALWAYS stood for Freedom and Liberation. “Nika” isn’t just about “Joy”, it’s always been about Freedom. The slaves Nika free’d, the stories and myths passed down from many different places, the liberation for the Fishmen, all of it was about fighting oppression, and Luffy has fought against oppressive forces for years. Again, G5 is an asspull in the sense of it immediately being revealed that Luffy has the same powers as Joyboy/Nika, however to claim there was absolutely no buildup just goes to show that you don’t even read the story
@@AdolisYT I think you're misunderstanding what I meant there, the whole basis of a Zoan is that you transform into that particular thing. When Luffy awakens the implication is that he literally becomes Nika, the sun god. They even have him make the same pose and use a similar silhouette. When I said "it was never hinted that the fruit did anything other than give you rubber" I meant that it was never hinted that the gum gum fruit could transform you into something else, just that it lets you stretch your body. I guess it depends on how you wanna interpret what zoans are...but to to me, Luffy using gear five is him basically embodying Nika which is something we were never told the gum gum fruit could even have the POTENTIAL for. It was just that it turns you into a rubberman, that's it not that the rubber fruit has the capacity to turn you into a literal god if you awaken it

Luffy's body got permanently altered into rubber, no other Paramythia user other than Luffy got permanently altered by their fruit 2. Luffy has multiple transformations. A rubber fruit can't grant you transformations, Luffy could even multiply his arms in gear 4 boundman and snakeman. 3. Kaido questioned why Luffy's attacks in gear4 could alter trajectory, he even questioned if rubber could do that at all. We can even go back to more stuff like the sun god being mentioned in Skypeia, Luffy doing the Nika pose in Skypeia... Who's who talking about the warrior of liberation. While this doesn't hint at Luffy having that power it shows that Oda always had the sun god concept in mind
I completely agree, Gear 5 was not well handled or well written and I hate it when so many people keep saying “it was foreshadowed.” No it was not foreshadowed, it just shoehorned in and it’s lore it’s not only confusing but doesn’t make sense at all. You mean to tell me the world government was looking for this fruit for a long time but never pursued after Luffy even after showing his powers to the marines many times and shouting gomu gomu/gum gum even when fighting an admiral? Get out of here. This wasn’t foreshadowed at all. What One Piece fans are doing saying this is foreshadowing is just mental gymnastics. Come on Oda you could jog said this is a devil fruit awakening and leave it at that. 26:55 The thing is, the tone shift is not a big issue here. Luffy becoming a cartoon to spit in the face of Kaido's tyranny is a hilarious idea. I love Nika as a concept, as this legendary warrior of freedom whose legacy became a legend. The problem is, why now? Luffy has been fighting for liberation since the very beginning of the story, he also had a hole punched through him in Arabasta, yet Nika didn't awaken. Thematically, Luffy did nothing different this time to justify the transformation (not to mention how his journey to master Haki throughout Wano was rendered pointless in the end). As you mentioned too, the Government never showed any interest in the Gomu-Gomu fruit, despite supposedly knowing about its importance. The point of "Devil Fruit Awakening" does not make any sense. It was previously stated that Paramecia fruits, upon awakening, are able to exert their power outside the user (As exemplified by Doflamingo turning buildings into strings). I suspect this is why Luffy's fruit was changed into a Zoan; except, the Gomu-Gomu never behaved as a Zoan-type either, since Luffy doesn't "transform" the way other Zoan-users do - he is just rubber all the time. Then again, we have Chopper as another weird exception... Gear 5 is a great transformation that was introduced at a terrible time. I imagine a version of the story where Nika is revealed during Egghead, after we learn more about the origin of Devil Fruits, and while battling the CP-0 who themselves own Awakened Zoan Fruits to drive home the parallels between them and Luffy.
TBF, it had been shown earlier at multiple points that Mythical Zoans are pretty unique in how they can possess multiple abilities alongside the general beast/hybrid transformations. Like look at Yamato's Mythical Zoan being able to create and control Ice much like the Chill-Chill Fruit or how Sengoku's Daimyo fruit is capable of producing shockwaves similar to the Tremor fruit. Hell Kaido's dragon fruit basically has dominion over fire, wind and lightning.
As both a One Piece fan and a DBZ fan, people don’t have to get offended. I grew up on DBZ (Kai specifically), and I love the SS transformation. The voice acting in Kai is superb. However, even with all the points someone wants to make about how Gear 5, “Well, this is a retcon and this or that doesn’t make sense.” I don’t care. It was cool. It was epic to me. It went viral on the internet. People liked it. The only people who sweat the small stuff are nerds online like us who care. The casual audience don’t give a single shit. Not to say this video us worthless or not good, One Piece should get criticism like any other IP. Just saying that to any other OP fans who get offended at the video, DON’T, if you liked it, then enjoy it. Don’t sully your view of it by watching a video that you know will upset you. And to the DBZ-only fans, stop saying this is an “objective truth”, it’s not. Nobody’s opinion is the end all be all unless it’s about laws or something like murder being bad. I think you just coping, bro I agree it's okay to like it. But don't ignore its flaws. I watch terrible shows all thr time and enjoy them, but I understand they may be poorly written OBJECTIVELY. Poorly written doesn't mean unenjoyable it can be bad and still fun to watch at least
I feel like a lot of one piece fans don't get that when people criticize G5 they don't do it because they don't like the design or abilities, they do it because how it was introduced was confusing and poorly executed. It could be a top tier transformation had Oda found a better way to introduce it.
Oh man, did you know there’s a study suggesting that watching *Detective Conan* can actually make people smarter? Meanwhile, *One Piece* seems to have the opposite effect-it makes its audience less critical. Fans convince themselves that Oda has been meticulously foreshadowing everything and can do no wrong, but in reality, he’s just making things up as he goes. It’s been 25 years, and the story has barely progressed. Does he really need over 1,000 chapters just to reveal key elements of the plot?
@ernestomanso1981 no they are not. One piece has some of the greatest foreshadowing in all of anime but you have to really dig it out and they sound like a stretch until they are true.
I think the name change to "Nika-Nika Fruit" and the additional lore of the World Government hunting it for centuries are the biggest problems of Gear 5. Otherwise, Gear 5 as an awakening is perfect. Luffy has complete control over his elasticity and can turn things into rubber. Even his hair and clothes turning white could have been waved away. I would even argue that you can still have the Gum-Gum Fruit tied to Nika/Joy Boy and have different cultures have stories about Nika and them comparing him to Luffy. It's also cool that Luffy is the just second person to ever awaken the Gum-Gum Fruit. This underlines how difficult it is to properly train this fruit and push it to its limits. I think the only thing, where I'm still on the fence is, is the continuous laugther of Gear 5 Luffy 🤔
I mean, being that it's a Zoan type now, it makes sense. An animal eating a human type Zoan, they gain intelligence. It's never been directly stated, but I think that the opposite is true, and the Zoan effects the personality of the person. In Luffy’s case, Nika is a god with a very joyous personality. So when he fully transforms he gets taken over by that personality even more.
Wano always felt off to me, even though I really liked the ideas introduced in it, and I thought Gear 5 was an awesome form, but this makes a lot of sense. Despite being an absurdly long arc, everything ironically felt rushed. The retcon of Gear 5 is really just the tip of the iceberg. Luffy should NOT have bridged even a sizeable percentage of the gap between Katakuri and Kaido in just two weeks. That is ridiculous. That jail training should have been at LEAST six months if not 1-2 years. It basically should've been a quasi-timeskip. Kaido one-shotted a Luffy who was already marginally beyond Katakuri and we're supposed to believe that Luffy is able to not only hold his own but actually manage to knock this absolute unit down after just two weeks? Kaido's character was barely fleshed out despite being the central antagonist of not only Wano but the entire Yonko saga. Ffs we learned more about Roger than Kaido here. His whole backstory was crammed into the episode where he was defeated lol. In some ways it feels like Orochi was actually the main villain, since we learned way more about him. And the lack of Ace's presence here, as you alluded to, was really disappointing, especially considering his name fits in perfectly to the Jack/Queen/King/Joker dynamic. Learning that Ace used to have some affiliation with Kaido would've been really cool. Instead we got "yeah he met Yamato once yeah bye lol". That could've even been WHY Kaido was going to Marineford to begin with, which would make Shanks' relationship with Luffy much more complicated and interesting from that point on. What would've been better would be if the World Government realized HERE that Luffy's fruit was in fact the Nika fruit. THAT would've made way more sense. Like all their intel begins to come together and they finally zero in on the Gomu Gomu No Mi fruit being what they were looking for all along, with Guernica haphazardly and desperately intervening to try and prevent its awakening only to Frieza himself into creating what he feared most. The Gorosei's powers could've even been somewhat foreshadowed with them about to intervene themselves, but then Guernica assures them that he can stop Luffy. That could've been the best of both worlds - hyping up Gear 5 properly and also robbing Kaido of his fair fight. Oda could've had his cake and ate it too. Now THAT would've been an arc. Instead we got an arc of good ideas and awful execution. But one thing I will give credit to is how Big Mom was handled, especially how she was defeated. She wasn't disrespected as much as Kaido was. She lost despite clearly being stronger than Law and Kid combined, but only because she was arrogant and didn't take them seriously. It was a much better dynamic and a much better fight, and it demonstrated that superior strategy and intellect combined with being underestimated can trump overwhelming strength. It also added more to Kid and how easily he gets on power trips, showing that he became completely delusional after that fight thinking he could take on Shanks all by himself.
Super Saiyan already well recognize before the Internet Gear 5 even with the internet still getting slammed and yet One Delusional Piece fans still forcing the Label Iconic to Gear 5 it's just pitiful at this point
I personally love both forms; While yes the writing around Super Saiyan is better that doesn't mean Gear 5 is instantly crap. Both arcs they are from had their own problems but at the end of the day both forms are pretty iconic and are really nice for their stories.

I really like your videos, they are entertaining and generally I like your insight I believe the Super Saiyan transformation although iconic is not respected enough for it's writing, I also think one piece fans over hype the foreshadowing in the story, I agree with your criticisms of Wano and Kaido and I appreciate the fact that you mentioned that this is probably the perfect transformation for Luffy as a character and how the concept has been developing after it's introduction But I still think your views on gear 5 come as disingenuous, and kind of condescending you are way more lenient with Dragon Ball than with One Piece Yes the super saiyan transformation is great for the arc and Goku's character but let's not act as if is this profound and super complex narrative piece as you are presenting it even though is greatly executed. Yes, the concept of saiyans were brought into the story with a bigger buffer but the concept of the transformation itself was introduced in the same saga. The sun has always been a central part of One Piece's system of symbols the narrative discourse is greatly communicated through the concept of a dawn but you didn't mention any of that and just dismiss it without any deeper analysis. You also get some points wrong, The hito hito no mi model Nika is not the most powerful special fruit, but it grants the most ridiculous power when awakened, there is a huge difference. The world government is not afraid of the fruit because of its power but because what it represents to people, hope, people with hope will fight for it's freedom and that's what the gorosei want to avoid, that's one piece's whole point. Deaths in one piece are the biggest stain in it's narrative but to lessen the merits of the transformation because of that is a stretch. We also don't know what happened between Shanks and Kaido so all of this seems like you weren't thorough enough with one piece but you were with dragon ball. I understand you might be exaggerating to get views and reaction but is a bit disappointing. I liked the video but, a mess vs a master piece?
fr. Sure, gear five and once piece as a whole has its flaws, but is it really as bad as this guy makes it out to be? I personally was WAY more hyped when I saw gear five for the first time then I was when I first saw super saiyan. (Although that could be because I was 7 when I first saw super saiyan)
I actually really like the G5 transformation itself, but man, Oda really dropped the ball with it's introduction. I felt almost nothing about G5 when it was first revealed, it just felt almost like an unrelated spectacle. I started liking it during the Lucci fight and reading the lore behind Nika, and how it makes a lot of sense that Luffy is basically his reincarnation.

Awakening a devil fruit still takes effort on the user's part, Luffy didn't just get gear 5 from the get go, and he could have died at multiple times before getting the chance to unlock it, so it's not super fair to say the fruit undermines all his prior accomplishments as there's plenty of people who never awakened their powers or lost to opponents they should have won against when looking at them from a pure power scaling perspective. Plus Luffy was never just some guy, he himself may have been a nobidy but he grew up tied to some of the biggest figures in the one piece world, and the series always had an underlying theme of destiny behind it, so these kinds of arguments are a bit weak to me as they miss recurring themes of the series at large to hyper focus on the smaller scale stuff from the east blue days and such in a vacuum.

@thelenbax8497 I don't fully agree on it being a retcon, perhaps I'm just arguing semantics but the Nikka reveal didn't feel like it outright broke the canon to make gear 5 happen for me, and like you said the story isn't over so future chapters can retroactively have it make more and more perfect sense, not to mention flesh out and develop the Nikka idea in general. Plus I tend to not take discussions on current Shonen manga developments as the chapters come out too seriously one way or the other cause it's hard to evaluate an entire arc while following it chapter by chapter, and in general I feel these kinds of manga stories are best read in volumes some time after a given arc has ended to simmer on the story as it's easy to get wrapped in the hype or anti hype and have that get in the way of critical thinking. Not to say no one's allowed to dislike stuff as it comes out or that hot takes can't be correct, I just personally try to be patient with these things, and Oda has a generally good track record where he's usually a 9/10 author and like a 7/10 on a bad day, so I try to watch expectations ad they are astronomical due to how crazy good a lot of One Piece is, and I generally never had a bad time with it so far.

Absolutely, you put it so well, Odas great but this was an odd one. gear 5 itself is a quite fitting awakening for Luffy, Powerfull yet goofy & full of freedom, its the leadup to it that just feels off , The way Luffy does not formulate it himself like the other gears but seemingly dies then bam he just gets it for free, the minimal setup for it through hasty exposition, & the reveal that its actually the "bestest froot evar akchualy" wich kinda takes away from Luffy since it was cool seeing him use a basic rubber power in such creative & poweful ways , Now its like "ofcourse he won, hes got the sungod fruit" Also the government knew about this? both forms work perfectly for the characters as being represented of them breaking their limits. I know many people like to claim Gear 5 was a BS power up but you have to remember Luffy has been training constantly throughout his journey trying to master his abilitiers just like Goku was doing throughout the course of his story. I never understood why people felt the need to compare the two as if it was a contest cause I like the idea for both transformations. Though if there is one thing I can criticize is how Dragonball basically made Super Saiyan irrelevant over the years with the constant need to keep introducing newer transformations. Hell, the same happened with SSJ God not long after it was introduced where it was made obsolete by SSJ Blue almost immediately. Whereas with OP Luffy doesn't really get a new flashy transformation every arc. We didn't even get the Gear modes til water Seven and it wasn't even til the Doflamingo fight post timeskip that Luffy revealed his Gear 4.
Honestly for me, the fact that Luffy doesn't seem anymore powerful than if his paramecia awakened made it seem like less of an asspull to beat Kaido, and more an asspull so Oda could make Luffy's awakening look cool which... The biggest issue I have with the Nika retcon is that it was completely unnecessary. The Gomu-Gomu no Mi could have just been a completely typical, unassuming paramecia fruit like it always had been, Gear 5 could have been the devil fruit awakening like everyone expected, and all the connections to Joyboy could have been entirely thematic, non-literal connections, and the audience would have completely accepted that. People were already predicting that the awakening for the Gomu Gomu no Mi would allow Luffy to rubberize his environment, no Sun God retcon needed.
It would have fit better into the narrative, it would have made more sense thematically, it would have preserved the underdog nature of Luffy as someone who mastered a normal (even kinda lame) devil fruit power, and would have just been a better story overall. I genuinely can't understand why Oda felt the need to do this retcon in the first place.

As i've said in another video. Both forms are just the character's best aspects taken into a massive extent. Luffy turning things to rubber in Gear 5 basically embodies his joy and goofy sense while Super Saiyan is Goku's pure heart and saiyan rage coming to terms with one another to create something greater.

Let's just actually appreciate Akira Toriyamas creative genius. He made a ridiculous retcon "They were Aliens" actually work. Goated artist. So glad to experience his style of writing. When Dragonball story was ongoing the "twists" weren't that huge. They were interesting but the implications were pretty short lived. The story is primarily just Kid Goku trying to find Dragonballs and us witnessing his struggles while doing so. So the twists were pretty campy. "Oh no Goku can go feral" "Matser Roshi has a disguise" "Demon King Piccolo is now back". They were pretty important moments but they never had major implications as to where the story should be going. Goku was always more interestes in his own goals too which made that feel a lot more natural to not over focus on every little twist in his adventure.
In One Piece however they really want you to sit there a sherlock holmes every implication from their vague hints. It makes anything they say more open to scrutiny because now we're trying to uncover a mystery rather than witnessing a narrative unfold.

It's less that I wanted/expected it go go a certain way, it's just that Oda is so good at world building and foreshadowing, that most small mishaps/inconsistencies are 'weird but whatever'. Having his fruit not be the useless gum fruit nobody wanted but a legendary god without any signs of backing it up until right that point is just... Bad.
Without going to hard into the lore, it's pretty clear that he is the next Nika/Joyboy spiritually, he does what they did without realizing it which is fine, but giving him god powers is just sad, I hate when this happens, same in Naruto where is just hated the whole Ninja Jesus aspect.(That series is a whole different rant)
The way the Nika Transformation aka Gear 5 triggered also felt pretty anticlimactic for me.
All that said, don't let this bother you, most things in OP are absolutely great, with such a huge overarching story it's normal to have some irregularities here and there

The point is highlighted pretty well throughout the video. The Super Saiyan segment was pretty easy to understand, but with Gear 5 I almost had a stroke trying to comprehend it all.
I agree with the events leading up to G5 being rather lackluster. This is why people argued that the raid should have failed so we get a sense of harrowing loss before the epic comeback. But we never got that. Luffy wasn't even dead for the whole chapter before he came back.

Around 1:33 What are you trying to imply with this, because i will tell you this, there are hint everywhere on Bleach to Ichigo being a hybrid of all type of Spiritual compositions, heck, Tite Kubo had so clear the plans for Ichigo, that when we just knew he had a Human soul which posess Shinigami and Hollow powers, he made the mistake of writting that Ichigo was the son of a "Shinigami and..." on the official release on the magazine, when Ichigo was suppose to witness for the first time that his father was a Shinigami and he had those powers from birth... Making people that read this on the original publication before it was corrected on the tome release, where it said "Human and..." cuts to Isshin appearing as a Shinigami, think that there was something more about Ichigo's mother, making people think that she was Quincy... Which surprise turn out to be truth, in fact, it was this mistake and the fact that in the manga Yhwach looked so much like Old Man Zangetsu that made fan realize and it wasn't a just wild theories, it could be real, before we read The Blade and Me 2 and The Blade is Me, so this wasn't an asspull.
Tite Kubo is the kind of writer that likes people trying to pierce together the story on their own, so he just leaves small hints to big developments, for example, Ichigo household was full with hint to the number 10, which made people think before the release of everything but the rain that Isshin was the captain of the 10th division, Ichigo's bed has the Quincy Cross on his bed sheets, which is what lead to people thinking about his mother being a Quincy thanks for that mistake i mention above. You can see a frown in the reflexion on the Blade that the Hollow inside of Ichigo when he was taunting him at one point, while there was a smile on his face, etc.
There are a tons of this small signs of foreshadowing on Bleach, and they aren't to be diverse or something like that, they are with great meaning, for example, since Ichigo's journey is base on Shinto mythology, you can find a lot of hints on the worlds and races of Bleach to this different paths, and the reason to why Ichigo is like he is, it's because his path of self actualization and character completion requires him to accept all of this different sides of him. Making him face the best and worse of himself.

The whole Nika thing was such an obvious ass pull it's crazy lmao. Okay, so they knew rubber = nika the whole time? Why did they not send elite forces against Luffy immediately? This guy became famous relatively quickly yet this was never brought up. When was the gum gum fruit ever hinted at giving you more than just stretching your body? The thing with one piece discourse online is that there's too much glaze for Oda. I don't know what it is, maybe it's sunk-cost because the story is so long, but so much of the fanbase bends over backwards to defend obvious flaws in the writing. It's so weird because other writers like toriyama and kishimoto get flamed or just outright called bad. Like compare gear five to super saiyan, a transformation hinted at throughout the entire arc brought about by poetic irony: Frieza feared the super saiyan but he brought it into existence through his own pride and cruelty. On top that, the transformation is the completion of goku's arc he started in the saiyan saga, first he denied he was a saiyan at all, then half-heartedly accepted it, then in against frieza declares himself both a saiyan and a earthling, the legendary super saiyan. Luffy really didn't go through much of a developmental arc through wano, it's more character constancy than anything which is fine but for a transformation isn't enough for me. They could have done something with Luffy's perspective about how joy and freedom relate to build up the transformation, I mean they even had the whole "smile fruit" thing going so it would make sense thematically. But, there wasn't much of that. I'm sorry, but ssj is not only stronger, but it just clears from a writing standpoint like i can't believe this is what people were saying was "the most iconic transformation ever"

Everything that happened in Z and onwards is a massive retcon to take a story clearly inspired by mysticism and the Journey to the West and turn it into an intergalactic battle where Goku is an alien. That was not planned, it was not hinted at. The entire Saiyan arc, is as you say, an ass pull to extend the series. Your other opinions on it not being earned, etc, are just that, opinions.
In all fairness G5 didn’t actually give Luffy any special abilities he didn’t have prior so your whole “When was it said it could do more than make you rubber” is kinda baseless. Red Hawk existed and Luffy tanked Enel’s lightning. Paramecia’s have always had the Awakened Effect of turning anything you touch into your respective property, and since Gomu was always stated to be a Paramecia prior to the reveal, it’s a given that Luffy would get those properties. Luffy grabbing Lightning from the sky isn’t a new ability, rubber is an insulator, electricity cannot easily pass through it, so it makes sense that an awakened Gomu could grab lightning. To “counter” your point as to why Luffy wasn’t just outright killed by the WG’s elite forces, well, enter Shanks, Garp, and Dragon. Dragon is the leader of a force that has opposed the WG for a very long time. Shanks is not only the most feared Pirate in the verse, but more than likely the strongest character in the verse. Whilst nothing directly supports it, it is very easy to say that Shanks and Dragon at the very least would step up to avenge Luffy, even if news of his death and/or capture would arrive very late. Shanks wanted the Gomu to explicitly hide it from the WG, no doubt he’d book it to them if they got their hands on it. Also, you’re thinking abt Luffy’s connection to the reveal in a very shallow sense. Luffy being connected to Nika so literally IS a massive asspull, however Nika has years of lore built up around him throughout multiple arcs in the series, and the one character who has always stood by those values and uttered them openly was always Luffy. Luffy has ALWAYS stood for Freedom and Liberation. “Nika” isn’t just about “Joy”, it’s always been about Freedom. The slaves Nika free’d, the stories and myths passed down from many different places, the liberation for the Fishmen, all of it was about fighting oppression, and Luffy has fought against oppressive forces for years. Again, G5 is an asspull in the sense of it immediately being revealed that Luffy has the same powers as Joyboy/Nika, however to claim there was absolutely no buildup just goes to show that you don’t even read the story

When Luffy awakens the implication is that he literally becomes Nika, the sun god. They even have him make the same pose and use a similar silhouette. When I said "it was never hinted that the fruit did anything other than give you rubber" I meant that it was never hinted that the gum gum fruit could transform you into something else, just that it lets you stretch your body. I guess it depends on how you wanna interpret what zoans are...but to to me, Luffy using gear five is him basically embodying Nika which is something we were never told the gum gum fruit could even have the POTENTIAL for. It was just that it turns you into a rubberman, that's it not that the rubber fruit has the capacity to turn you into a literal god if you awaken it

1. Luffy's body got permanently altered into rubber, no other Paramythia user other than Luffy got permanently altered by their fruit
2. Luffy has multiple transformations. A rubber fruit can't grant you transformations, Luffy could even multiply his arms in gear 4 boundman and snakeman.
3. Kaido questioned why Luffy's attacks in gear4 could alter trajectory, he even questioned if rubber could do that at all.
We can even go back to more stuff like the sun god being mentioned in Skypeia, Luffy doing the Nika pose in Skypeia... Who's who talking about the warrior of liberation. While this doesn't hint at Luffy having that power it shows that Oda always had the sun god concept in mind

Luffy has been fighting for liberation since the very beginning of the story, he also had a hole punched through him in Arabasta, yet Nika didn't awaken. Thematically, Luffy did nothing different this time to justify the transformation (not to mention how his journey to master Haki throughout Wano was rendered pointless in the end).
As you mentioned too, the Government never showed any interest in the Gomu-Gomu fruit, despite supposedly knowing about its importance.
The point of "Devil Fruit Awakening" does not make any sense. It was previously stated that Paramecia fruits, upon awakening, are able to exert their power outside the user (As exemplified by Doflamingo turning buildings into strings). I suspect this is why Luffy's fruit was changed into a Zoan; except, the Gomu-Gomu never behaved as a Zoan-type either, since Luffy doesn't "transform" the way other Zoan-users do - he is just rubber all the time. Then again, we have Chopper as another weird exception...
Gear 5 is a great transformation that was introduced at a terrible time. I imagine a version of the story where Nika is revealed during Egghead, after we learn more about the origin of Devil Fruits, and while battling the CP-0 who themselves own Awakened Zoan Fruits to drive home the parallels between them and Luffy.
TBF, it had been shown earlier at multiple points that Mythical Zoans are pretty unique in how they can possess multiple abilities alongside the general beast/hybrid transformations. Like look at Yamato's Mythical Zoan being able to create and control Ice much like the Chill-Chill Fruit or how Sengoku's Daimyo fruit is capable of producing shockwaves similar to the Tremor fruit. Hell Kaido's dragon fruit basically has dominion over fire, wind and lightning.
As both a One Piece fan and a DBZ fan, people don’t have to get offended. I grew up on DBZ (Kai specifically), and I love the SS transformation. The voice acting in Kai is superb.

I feel like a lot of one piece fans don't get that when people criticize G5 they don't do it because they don't like the design or abilities, they do it because how it was introduced was confusing and poorly executed. It could be a top tier transformation had Oda found a better way to introduce it.

I think the name change to "Nika-Nika Fruit" and the additional lore of the World Government hunting it for centuries are the biggest problems of Gear 5. Otherwise, Gear 5 as an awakening is perfect. Luffy has complete control over his elasticity and can turn things into rubber. Even his hair and clothes turning white could have been waved away. I would even argue that you can still have the Gum-Gum Fruit tied to Nika/Joy Boy and have different cultures have stories about Nika and them comparing him to Luffy. It's also cool that Luffy is the just second person to ever awaken the Gum-Gum Fruit. This underlines how difficult it is to properly train this fruit and push it to its limits. I think the only thing, where I'm still on the fence is, is the continuous laugther of Gear 5 Luffy 🤔
I mean, being that it's a Zoan type now, it makes sense. An animal eating a human type Zoan, they gain intelligence. It's never been directly stated, but I think that the opposite is true, and the Zoan effects the personality of the person. In Luffy’s case, Nika is a god with a very joyous personality. So when he fully transforms he gets taken over by that personality even more.
Wano always felt off to me, even though I really liked the ideas introduced in it, and I thought Gear 5 was an awesome form, but this makes a lot of sense.
Despite being an absurdly long arc, everything ironically felt rushed. The retcon of Gear 5 is really just the tip of the iceberg.
Luffy should NOT have bridged even a sizeable percentage of the gap between Katakuri and Kaido in just two weeks. That is ridiculous. That jail training should have been at LEAST six months if not 1-2 years. It basically should've been a quasi-timeskip. Kaido one-shotted a Luffy who was already marginally beyond Katakuri and we're supposed to believe that Luffy is able to not only hold his own but actually manage to knock this absolute unit down after just two weeks?
Kaido's character was barely fleshed out despite being the central antagonist of not only Wano but the entire Yonko saga. Ffs we learned more about Roger than Kaido here. His whole backstory was crammed into the episode where he was defeated lol. In some ways it feels like Orochi was actually the main villain, since we learned way more about him.
And the lack of Ace's presence here, as you alluded to, was really disappointing, especially considering his name fits in perfectly to the Jack/Queen/King/Joker dynamic. Learning that Ace used to have some affiliation with Kaido would've been really cool. Instead we got "yeah he met Yamato once yeah bye lol". That could've even been WHY Kaido was going to Marineford to begin with, which would make Shanks' relationship with Luffy much more complicated and interesting from that point on.
What would've been better would be if the World Government realized HERE that Luffy's fruit was in fact the Nika fruit. THAT would've made way more sense. Like all their intel begins to come together and they finally zero in on the Gomu Gomu No Mi fruit being what they were looking for all along, with Guernica haphazardly and desperately intervening to try and prevent its awakening only to Frieza himself into creating what he feared most. The Gorosei's powers could've even been somewhat foreshadowed with them about to intervene themselves, but then Guernica assures them that he can stop Luffy. That could've been the best of both worlds - hyping up Gear 5 properly and also robbing Kaido of his fair fight. Oda could've had his cake and ate it too.
Now THAT would've been an arc.
Instead we got an arc of good ideas and awful execution.
But one thing I will give credit to is how Big Mom was handled, especially how she was defeated. She wasn't disrespected as much as Kaido was. She lost despite clearly being stronger than Law and Kid combined, but only because she was arrogant and didn't take them seriously. It was a much better dynamic and a much better fight, and it demonstrated that superior strategy and intellect combined with being underestimated can trump overwhelming strength. It also added more to Kid and how easily he gets on power trips, showing that he became completely delusional after that fight thinking he could take on Shanks all by himself.
The transformation that i (personally) think is the best in shonen is Nirvana mode Mori Jin

I believe the Super Saiyan transformation although iconic is not respected enough for it's writing, I also think one piece fans over hype the foreshadowing in the story, I agree with your criticisms of Wano and Kaido and I appreciate the fact that you mentioned that this is probably the perfect transformation for Luffy as a character and how the concept has been developing after it's introduction
But I still think your views on gear 5 come as disingenuous, and kind of condescending you are way more lenient with Dragon Ball than with One Piece Yes the super saiyan transformation is great for the arc and Goku's character but let's not act as if is this profound and super complex narrative piece as you are presenting it even though is greatly executed. Yes, the concept of saiyans were brought into the story with a bigger buffer but the concept of the transformation itself was introduced in the same saga.
The sun has always been a central part of One Piece's system of symbols the narrative discourse is greatly communicated through the concept of a dawn but you didn't mention any of that and just dismiss it without any deeper analysis.
You also get some points wrong, The hito hito no mi model Nika is not the most powerful special fruit, but it grants the most ridiculous power when awakened, there is a huge difference. The world government is not afraid of the fruit because of its power but because what it represents to people, hope, people with hope will fight for it's freedom and that's what the gorosei want to avoid, that's one piece's whole point.
Deaths in one piece are the biggest stain in it's narrative but to lessen the merits of the transformation because of that is a stretch. We also don't know what happened between Shanks and Kaido so all of this seems like you weren't thorough enough with one piece but you were with dragon ball. I understand you might be exaggerating to get views and reaction but is a bit disappointing. I liked the video but, a mess vs a master piece?

Awakening a devil fruit still takes effort on the user's part, Luffy didn't just get gear 5 from the get go, and he could have died at multiple times before getting the chance to unlock it, so it's not super fair to say the fruit undermines all his prior accomplishments as there's plenty of people who never awakened their powers or lost to opponents they should have won against when looking at them from a pure power scaling perspective.
Plus Luffy was never just some guy, he himself may have been a nobidy but he grew up tied to some of the biggest figures in the one piece world, and the series always had an underlying theme of destiny behind it, so these kinds of arguments are a bit weak to me as they miss recurring themes of the series at large to hyper focus on the smaller scale stuff from the east blue days and such in a vacuum.
@ginogatash4030 I understand where you come from. I still stand by my point that the fruit shouldn't have been retconned to be a mythical zoan type. Oda is still a masterful writer, and the story isn't over yet, so I admit it isn't fair to discuss this topic until we see where this path leads Luffy.
@thelenbax8497 I don't fully agree on it being a retcon, perhaps I'm just arguing semantics but the Nikka reveal didn't feel like it outright broke the canon to make gear 5 happen for me, and like you said the story isn't over so future chapters can retroactively have it make more and more perfect sense, not to mention flesh out and develop the Nikka idea in general.
Plus I tend to not take discussions on current Shonen manga developments as the chapters come out too seriously one way or the other cause it's hard to evaluate an entire arc while following it chapter by chapter, and in general I feel these kinds of manga stories are best read in volumes some time after a given arc has ended to simmer on the story as it's easy to get wrapped in the hype or anti hype and have that get in the way of critical thinking.
Not to say no one's allowed to dislike stuff as it comes out or that hot takes can't be correct, I just personally try to be patient with these things, and Oda has a generally good track record where he's usually a 9/10 author and like a 7/10 on a bad day, so I try to watch expectations ad they are astronomical due to how crazy good a lot of One Piece is, and I generally never had a bad time with it so far.

I guess I just prefer when a character's connection to a form of divinity is implied instead of being explicitly laid out for the reader to get...
@thelenbax8497 if a story, especially a Shonen, implies that kind of stuff it's pretty much 100% guaranteed to become an explicit major plot point later, but what would be an example of a character that is only implied to be have ties with divinity?

If Goku being an alien is truly a retcon, when they hinted at just that when he first transformed. The statement shown shows how Toriyama was forced to make Goku into an alien because of plot not ass pull see the difference.

gear 5 itself is a quite fitting awakening for Luffy, Powerfull yet goofy & full of freedom,
its the leadup to it that just feels off , The way Luffy does not formulate it himself like the other gears but seemingly dies then bam he just gets it for free, the minimal setup for it through hasty exposition, & the reveal that its actually the "bestest froot evar akchualy" wich kinda takes away from Luffy since it was cool seeing him use a basic rubber power in such creative & poweful ways , Now its like "ofcourse he won, hes got the sungod fruit" Also the government knew about this? How have they not been sending Agents to hound Luffy ever since they knew he had the power that they are so worried about? it would have actually been OK if they did not know themselves that the rubberfruit actually was the fruit of they were worried about but no, they were the ones who changed & hid the true name.
(+The fight itself not bringing Ace up at all was odd since Kaido indirectly caused aces death by delaying Shanks could have made the fight more personal)
Love The Goofy rubberhose powers that rubberizes stuff around him tho & i am happy about that & the conection to the mysterious joyboy is interesting, but revealing the fruit as a human zoan sungod fruit & having it be this whole special thing with all these retconish reveals is just hard to swallow.

both forms work perfectly for the characters as being represented of them breaking their limits. I know many people like to claim Gear 5 was a BS power up but you have to remember Luffy has been training constantly throughout his journey trying to master his abilitiers just like Goku was doing throughout the course of his story. I never understood why people felt the need to compare the two as if it was a contest cause I like the idea for both transformations. Though if there is one thing I can criticize is how Dragonball basically made Super Saiyan irrelevant over the years with the constant need to keep introducing newer transformations. Hell, the same happened with SSJ God not long after it was introduced where it was made obsolete by SSJ Blue almost immediately. Whereas with OP Luffy doesn't really get a new flashy transformation every arc. We didn't even get the Gear modes til water Seven and it wasn't even til the Doflamingo fight post timeskip that Luffy revealed his Gear 4.
Honestly for me, the fact that Luffy doesn't seem anymore powerful than if his paramecia awakened made it seem like less of an asspull to beat Kaido, and more an asspull so Oda could make Luffy's awakening look cool which... I'm kinda okay with since it is really cool. I just hope we get gear 6 that is as creative as gear 4 was, it would be pretty lame if this was Luffy's final form

2:00 you could argue that it was built up during the wano arc, specifically through who’s who and other references to a Sun God, which makes it seem a bit more Mickey to me because it comes off as Oda making some shit up during Wano specifically to connect it to Luffy, rather than it being natural. The foreshadowing was definitely there it just wasn’t done well.
