maybe it was a distortion of that voice line but for a long time I thought one of the lines in this game was "I HUNGER, COWARD" and I referenced it for a long time (although of course no one got the joke)
Spy Hunter - You need missiles to destroy the helicopter. Also, if you go far enough, a bridge will be out, so you drive through a boat house and your car transforms into a boat. Defender - When you shoot the alien abducting a human, you can catch the falling human. I believe they die if they fall from too great a height.
Last week you said you only watch 2 minutes of the video and are mostly just in it for the marble runs I do the same with some of the clearly poor/boring games. Goldeneye teasing us a bit here was tense

I've been using the Midway collections for GameCube for Gaming Through the Ages and Sinistar's voice was more prominent there. I'm curious if it was your headphones or the N64's limited resources...
You gotta save the humans by catching them in midair in Defender. You missed the warp levels because the planet kept getting destroyed by all humans dying. It’s actually one of the more in depth games in that collection if you know the mechanics
My dad grew up in arcades these games were prevalent and told many stories about his and watching others. He really loved Joust and I remember he often could get a decent bit further in the game than I ever did. I preferred the physics of Balloon fight. Defender I remember had a lot of depth I struggled to get to as the skill gap is pretty unforgiving. A old quarter eater back in the day. And you are a good man for playing a lot of Smash TV. I had a similar complilation on the GameCube that included it and loved it as well.
I hope this guy makes it in the Guinness world records for completing the N64 library with the best explanation of each game. Nintendo should take notice and sponsor him.
Never, ever let eggs hatch in joust, they evolve... Better, faster, stronger. I am guessing eventually you discover that you have to stab the pterodactyl in the mouth with your jousting stick. The Atari 2600 version of defender had far less visual clutter and was easier to tell projectiles from debris. Edit: Yep, he got it lol. This was one of my most played ATARI 2600 games. I remember getting Joust for my son Kendell when I purchased our family an Atari 2600 in 1977 or 1978 or so. That was a fun time. We had Frogger and Pac Man on it too.
When you were talking about all your favorite arcade games back in the day. It reminded me of one of mine. Dynamite Cop. Haven't thought about that in a long time.
KEKW! Thanks Thab! I own a cabinet, and could play this game for as long as I wanted to back in the day. My group of friends could do 10 million points per game all the time. One day a couple of friends and I were at 42.5 million when the arcade owner turned the game off, and refunded us our quarter.
This video definitely reminds me of the age difference between us but it was really awesome seeing you experience some of my favorite arcade games from when I was a kid. Spy Hunter I played first on the NES though, not in arcade. Sinistar used to scare me as a little tyke. The cabinet would scream at you.
I played this game a ton as a kid. I think my dad picked it up at the local game store but given that I had more free time than him, I played lots of it. it provided so much replayability because of the options menus where you could tweak all the parameters for the games as if they were real arcade cabs. Joust was me and my dad's favorite game to play together. He was really good at Defender and Tapper too, most of these were games he used to play in the arcades in college. lots of good memories with this game. the voice lines in sinistar used to terrify me, that was one of the only games I never really played much of, but I remember getting decent at spy hunter.
Root beer tapper when he throws the mug in the air and a bird falls down is a nod to the arcade game Track and Field. In that game, if you run fast enough in the javelin event and hold the button to throw the javelin all the way up as high as it will go, it will spear a bird which falls out of the sky.
The atari version of Defender was awesome, you had to actually catch the falling people to save them, and if you lost too many you had a "hell" stage that was just a bunch of hard enemies... I put a lot of time in that game back in the day

It's such a simple but cool feature that makes it not feel like you get punished for simply getting bad rng in a cart racer. The controls leave room to be desired and can be clunky at times because of the 3 stats for the snowboards "speed" "handling" and "tricks" which handling becomes a major factor because not having enough will have you crashing everywhere.
