Either way, this does sound better than the N54 which is some going in itself, however the car as a whole is one of the greatest small packages to come out of BMW😍
@J B Agree there is more power available in the N54. But this is basically taking all the best bits of the 1m and merging it with the best bits of the M3 without any after-market modification. Very appealing.
Like the N54, the S65 is also an aluminum block engine, so for a V8 it's not heavy. Was actually slightly lighter than the S54 in the E46 M3. S65 is all about the throttle response (because it has ITBs), sound and 8400 rpm redline. Tuning wise, a supercharger is basically the only option, with which 650 hp is easily doable.

The V8 is lighter and the weight distribution with the V8 is even better than stock. The straight six is a long engine which extends farther beyond the front axle than the more compact (lengthwise) V8. They should have corner weighed it before and after. And who cares if Clarkson would approve?!
Funny thing is that the csl is supposed to be not only faster or more powerful but also lighter than the normal M hence the name Coupé Sport Leichtbau or Coupe Sport Lightweight. So the power may be there but i don't think the weight part is or actually might be a tad too much. Nevertheless the car is awesome and you can see it.
Had the chance to be in a F30 with a modified B58 (tune bigger turbo) it scared me how much power it had and still had to give. Think it was running close to 600whp. I work on BMW not a big fan of the V8s but absolutely love the the in-line 6. Bullet proof.
The 340i F30 LCI was/is an absolute beast of a car. In my opinion, the 340i was the pick of the F30 range as the M3 was just unimpressive compared to the C63, the E90 and the new M3. I'm going to be honest, just about any BMW with a V8 makes it 100x better. I would LOVE for them to make a new M3 or M4 with a V8. Its pure adrenaline and somehow releases such a primordial rush.
As much as I'd love to have it this way, I think the N54 engine is a BETTER platform for power increase, the S65 came with it's problems. But the soundtrack, nothing will beat it and for what it is.. that swap is era correct.. and I can see how getting rid of the overhang will improve handling.. I'm in the middle of building a E87 with a N55 swap, as I think of the 1 series as a contender to the VW Golf and not the VW Bora/Jetta (not that the Bora/Jetta came as a coupé anyway). But great feature on a spectacular build!
There is power, then there is turbo power. And the more your build power via turbos the more you change the characteristics. Part of the fun of M cars is the hooliganism and handling capabilities and IMO you need/want immediate throttle response before big power gains.

The V8 is lighter and the weight distribution with the V8 is even better than stock. The straight six is a long engine which extends farther beyond the front axle than the more compact (lengthwise) V8. They should have corner weighed it before and after. And who cares if Clarkson would approve?!
I had an ‘89 mustang LX 5.0 and it crabwalked like no other. Short wheel base cars love to get sideways. Man the v8 in that 1M is wonderful sounding.
The 1M is one of my favorite dream cars!
4.4 stroker kit would be ideal as its still over 1.5 tonnes.
Yeaaa my thoughts exactly...we are in a perverted territory now haha.
I’m currently looking at maybe upgrading my 2011 BMW 323i to a 340i or 440i. Do you approve of this and is the B58 as reliable as I hear people say it is?
@@patrickbateman6885 it was another techs customers looking for a driveline noise under acceleration. The customer had done mods to it. Tune and a bigger turbo, it was scary fast. Think it was a 17-19 F30 not an S motor
@@patrickbateman6885 I’ve got a stage 2 M140i b58, craziest car I’ve ever had
V8 only weighs 15 lbs more because loss of turbos. This looks like a blast.. you can always make an n54 more proper by getting hybrid turbos that pull to redline instead of the stockers which drop off around 6k rpm
The M and CSL badges are embarrassing for such a cool car
Mr. Fernie has come into his own with his car reviews. Fabulous job!
Speechless, I didn't want to watch this at first to avoid being sickened by the price tag that I expected this to carry. I was wrong, this isn't a £330k e30 m3 restoration by Redux which doesn't even include a donor car which will easily bring you to £400k plus all in. This is a 10th of the price and is it the 10th of the car?
Blimey, just need to get 30k together now
£30K + a 1M! :D
Shame they put a csl badge on it otherwise awesome
It's more like a 1M GTR surely.
THIRTY grand?!? This has to be the best value car on the planet.
Doug Demuro somewhere…:THIIIS is a BMW 1M Coupe. I’ve long been known to say that the 1M is the ultimate BMW sports car for its handling and tossability but I’ve always found it a bit underpowered. However his is not just any 1M Coupe because this example has a twin turbocharged V8 under the hood. That’s right this version puts out a staggering…
Patiently waiting for part 2 of this video! The start scene with Clarkson saying “right”
Who build these in the UK?
You've also added quite a bit of weight to the nose and change the balance of the car. Sounds amazing!!!
I'm older than you and I wouldnt call it a CSL as it hasnt been stripped of its weight that makes a CSL. And can't enter the competition cos I don't do instagram. a shame
Props for the manual box. It does look cool with the m3 bonnet, but I still prefer the shape of the e92 (I'm biased because I own one).
What a sound. This is what engines should be sounding like. Not the filtered turbo 4 and 6 cylinders we get now.
The spiritual successor to the legendary 333i. Personally, still prefer the six. Call me old fashioned.
No I don’t think your wrong; I’ve always had a thing for jaguar in line 6 engines as well as BMWs. A V6 or V8 is just not as smooth.
K&N must have handed out a sizeable check! The production aspect is well up! Well done, looks great!
When JC tells us how nicely balanced a car is he then throws it in and smokes the tires. Gimme that fob and let me show you how its done 😁
I have seen a 1M with a S85. It sounded amazing.
It sounds great a nice swap and not a bad price all in .
I'm going to be honest, just about any BMW with a V8 makes it 100x better. I would LOVE for them to make a new M3 or M4 with a V8. Its pure adrenaline and somehow releases such a primordial rush.
It absolutely drop dead gorgeous. My favourite car. The best!
Sooo where is Clarkson? Stop using guys🤦
The s65 is amazing.
So did he say I can get this car fully built all in for £30k ? Or did I hear him wrong
Love the e82 body for handling, sadly dont have the v8 yet looking at the e92 subframe and old x5 v8 lump in the next year or so
The 1 series, the best chassis in the world
Not usually a BMW fan in the 21st century... but this is badass.
dude applied counter lock almost 10 times mid sentence at 5:00 hahahhahaha
It looks dangerous... I want it.😮
I would for sure like to see what the old guys do with this awesome machine, looks super, sounds even more. This is how it’s supose to be
I like All M-cars, especially the coupes and the 1M is one of my top 5 favorite BMW's
Beautiful car, nice engine swap👌🏾
Best BMW -
i n t h e w o r l d .
S359 wheels on top of that, literal perfection
Jezza needs to drive this himself. Please make it happen, Mike!
i dont think you needed to clickbait clarksons name in the title and thumbnail, when hes not even in the video. a v8 m1 is clickbait enough
BMW knows how to make a perfect inline 6; The same cannot be said about their 8, 10 or 12 cylinders - they are ALWAYS problems.
"I don't want peace, *I want problems, ALWAYS*"
Plenty of their sixes have problems too, not least the N54.
For your information that intake system guarantee to loose you power! Also bmws do not like oiled filters ask me how I know? I had the v8 version and it chocked the throttle body and caused check engine light. Bmws from factory have better air box than aftermarket . Just get high quality filters that’s all u need . Also ur welcome !
Classic TG: “let’s whip the camera around at 80mph while the car drives around at 30mph”.
Who did you say created this car?
