  • The explosion of precision medicine has brought forth tremendous innovation in our pursuit to meet significant unmet medical needs around the world. When clinicians can better use genetic information in diagnosis and treatment, patient outcomes will improve.
Health care providers are increasingly applying user-centered design thinking to develop new treatment pathways. “There are tools available from the business world that can be purposed within the context of these medical systems,” says clinical geneticist Marc Williams. “They help us learn more quickly and develop systems that are more relevant and can be implemented more readily in clinical care.”
Marc S. Williams, M.D., FAAP, FACMG, FACMI, is professor and director emeritus of the Department of Genomic Health at Geisinger Health System and served as the co-PI of Geisinger’s participation in eMERGE. eMERGE (Electronic Medical Records and Genomics Network) is a National Institutes of Health-funded consortium that allows collaboration among institutions in the areas of genomics, statistics, ethics, informatics and clinical medicine. The goal of this network is to develop approaches to research that use DNA biobanks in combination with electronic medical record systems in order to conduct large-scale, high-throughput genetic research.
Presented by the student-led Healthcare Business Association (HBA) and sponsored by Johnson & Johnson, the 2023 Vitals conference convened under the theme of The Pursuit of Precision Medicine.
