    Kung Fu Panda Movie Description:
Kung Fu Panda is a 2008 American computer-animated action comedy film produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Paramount Pictures. It is the first installment in the Kung Fu Panda franchise. Directed by John Stevenson (in his feature directorial debut) and Mark Osborne, the film stars the voices of Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Ian McShane, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, David Cross, Randall Duk Kim, James Hong, Dan Fogler, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Jackie Chan. The film is set in a version of ancient China populated by anthropomorphic animals and revolves around a bumbling panda named Po, a kung-fu enthusiast. When a notorious snow-leopard named Tai Lung is foretold to escape from prison, Po is unwittingly named the "Dragon Warrior" - a prophesised hero worthy of reading a scroll said to grant its reader limitless power.
The film was originally conceived by Michael Lachance, a DreamWorks Animation executive. It was originally intended to be a parody of martial arts films, but director Stevenson decided instead to make an action-comedy wuxia film that incorporates the hero's journey narrative archetype for the lead character. The computer animation in the film was more complex than anything DreamWorks had done before. As with most DreamWorks Animation films, Hans Zimmer (this time collaborating with John Powell) scored Kung Fu Panda. He visited China to absorb the culture and get to know the China National Symphony Orchestra as part of his preparation.
Kung Fu Panda premiered in the United States on June 6, 2008. The film received positive reviews for its mature themes, faithfulness to the Chinese environment and tradition, action sequences, and writing. Kung Fu Panda opened in 4,114 theaters, grossing $20.3 million on its opening day and $60.2 million on its opening weekend, resulting in the number one position at the box office. The film became DreamWorks' biggest opening for a non-sequel film, making it the third highest grossing film of 2008, the highest-grossing animated film of the year worldwide, and also had the fourth-largest opening weekend for a DreamWorks film at the American and Canadian box office, behind all three Shrek sequels. The movie was nominated for the Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for best animated film, but lost both awards to WALL-E. The success of Kung Fu Panda launched a multimedia franchise and two sequels, with Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011) and Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016).

The Kung Fu Panda series is some of Dreamworks' best work, and they're much better than they have any right to be. The cast is phenomenal and the humor is on point, as you would expect with Jack Black, but what is most surprising is the thoughtful and heartwarming story that's being told. Even though the third movie is catered a bit more towards kids with it's humor, the series as a whole is great.

When you pointed out that sending a messenger to warn the prison guards is actually what allowed Tai Lung to escape, you were proving one of Oogway's adages: 'One often meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it.'

@@puppetmaster6548 I don't believe in either of them, really. My philosophy of life is 'sh*t happens.' But people accidentally stumbling into their destiny through the back door is an old trope in literature and on-screen. As far as I can see in movies and stories, prophecy can show one their destiny or fate. One chooses to accept or reject their prophesied destiny; the trope is constantly showing us that you might as well just accept your destiny, because it will come to pass, no matter what you do.

I really appreciate you acknowledging that Po is smarter than he seems. He was definitely trying to strike up a conversation with them, and early in the second film there’s a very similar type of scene.
If you think about it Oogway was actually making the right choice by passing on when he did. If he had stayed then Tai Lung would’ve shown up and he would’ve just beaten him again. But then Shifu would still be an emotional wreck and as a result wouldn’t want to train Po. By leaving he forces them both to confront Tai Lung, allowing Shifu to find his peace by training the true Dragon Warrior, and Po to fulfill his destiny.
I really hope you watch the next two. The 2nd is honestly one of the best animated movies out there.

From the look on Tai Lung's face when Shifu said 'I'm Sorry', he actually, for a moment, considered stopping. There was still a part of him that loved his father. That saw how much Shifu loved him, too, even now. A part of him that was willing to do the right thing even after all the wrong he'd done already. He was realizing that, here, now, he had a chance to turn back.
Then he chose to smother that last little spark of light in himself and embrace his actions.

    My two favorite parts:
1 ) When Po is going total fanboy in the Jade Palace, it's just off-hand dropping that he knows virtually every minutia about Kung Fu. I mean, he's been studying it his entire life - you can even see Shifu is impressed that Po immediately recognized the Wuxi Finger Hold and knew its history. Later, when Po is ransacking the pantry, it dawns on Shifu that Po has already learned everything he would normally teach to a student - what Po lacked was belief in his own ability, which is later revealed was the entire point of the Dragon Scroll.
2 ) The confrontation at the stairs, when Shifu admits he was trying to drive Po away. Po stayed because of his unwavering faith in Shifu - "If anyone could make me *not* me, it was *YOU* - the greatest Kung Fu teacher in all of China!" The animators were so masterful in how you can see every facet of that realization dawn across Shifu's face; that the crisis of faith all along had been his own.
Reminds me of one of my favorite Chinese proverbs: "Draw a circle about yourself and then look within that circle. You now behold everything you need in order to succeed, as well as everything which is capable of stopping you."

  • @theworldisquiethere

One of the things that I love about this movie is actually how hard the furious five (specifically tigress) is on Po before they warm up to him. I mean realistically, shifu has raised and trained them practically their entire live so that one of them can become the dragon warrior. He trained the mercilessly to the point where for them, kung fu is their entire life and livelihood… and now with the impending threat of Tai Lung everyone is even more stressed about who’s going to become the dragon warrior. Then in comes Po, a Panada who’s never done kung fu in his life and appears to treat it as a joke. It only makes sense the Tigress and the rest of the furious five would originally despise him for swooping in and taking something that they’ve trained their entire lives for, and subsequently dooming the valley of he didn’t get his act together (which he did, thankfully). The way Po’s relationship with the furious five develops is just one the many great things about the trilogy.

I'm really glad you mentioned how beautiful the music playing as Oogway ascended (The piece is actually called Oogway's Ascension) was, and you hit the nail on the head when you said DreamWorks always comes through with the music in their animated films. This particular piece is absolutely iconic, and the piano renditions of it that have been created since are phenomenal. It fit the moment so perfectly in the movie, as well, providing this sense of beauty and serenity to his passing because, for Oogway, it was merely another step on his journey and, having lived a full life, he looked forward to what awaited him after. He truly was ascending.

The movies get better as they go, IMO, but 1 or 2 could be considered my favourites. It's just amazing animation, great characters and sweet stories all the way.
Tai Lung is so driven to be the Dragon Warrior because he wants to be special. Remember that his parents abandoned him, so when he says "It's NOTHING!", that is his feeling on himself, and why he reacts violently when Po explains it to him.
Each of the villains of KFP have compelling reasons for being villains, IMO. None of them are just evil for the sake of being evil, and that makes them very interesting and great!

Smack his enemy with a tree, learned from his failure trying to get into the temple. The bamboo stilts and shuffling the woks, learned from his last day of training with Shifu. Even the part where he tells Ty Lung there is no secret ingrediant is something he learned from his father just hours earlier!

16:57 Fun fact about Kovu--he was originally Scar's son by design. They changed it at last minute because they wanted to avoid cousins being married. But, in every aspect, it's still obvious that he's Scar's son. He's designed after him, and he raised him (which Scar would never do if it wasn't his own), and (the obvious) there were no other adult male lions in the pride. They also originally had Nala and Simba as siblings in the original Lion King, and they even called each other "brother" and "sister," but it was changed last minute for the same reason. And... that's a random thing you know now.

I like that this cartoon reveals the theme that each personality is unique and special in its own way, when Po talks to Oogway about the Five, he lists their unique qualities that the Viper has poison (but it does not have poison and fangs) the Crane has wings (despite the fact that he was frail and weak and worked as a cleaner at the academy) "I don't have claws" Yes, the Tigress had claws, but note that she doesn't use them in battle (because she can hurt or even kill with them...) and only beats with his paws, well, the Mantis is just small and dexterous and there is nothing extraordinary about him that he voiced about them by. No Secret ingredient :3 p.s My favorite trilogy apart from How to Train a Dragon and Madagascar.

The reason the KFP series is so good I think is because apart from it being animated with talking animals, it really is just structured like an old school martial arts epic. Even throws in some decent simple eastern-style philosophy and life lessons for flavouring.

The other 2 Kung Fu Panda films are really good, and there are a good portion of really good Dreamworks films:
    Antz
The Prince of Egypt (One of the best 2D Animated film ever made IMO)
    The Road to El Dorado
    Chicken Run
Shrek 1, 2, & 4 (3 is the only real bad, and I think it can easily be skipped over to watch 4 as well lol)
    Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron
    Madagascar 1-3
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (You should also react to the other Wallace & Gromit specials as well if you watch this one)
    Over the Hedge
    Flushed Away
How to Train Your Dragon 1-3 (Best trilogy they have so far)
    Megamind
    Puss in Boots
    Rise of the Guardians
    The Croods 1 & 2
    Mr. Peabody & Sherman
    Penguins of Madagascar
Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie
    The Bad Guys
