Everyone said we can’t pass with him, but we couldn’t pass with Davis Warren either so why not just lean on the run and have a dynamic run game? The offense undeniably looked better with Alex under center
People talk about stacking the box to stop a power running game. The problem with that is if the running back breaks out of the box the chance of a long run or TD goes way up. As USC found out last Saturday and Ohio St. found out the last three years.
I think if Michigan can establish good play action and RPO’s you can get 5, 6, and 7 yard completions from Orji to extend Offensive drives which can lead to a rested defense not to mention potential points. If Orji can complete passes for something even close to 100 yards BUT no interceptions, Michigan can become a B1G Championship contender. BUT, let’s get back to 1-2 penalties only, running the ball efficiently, blitzing only around 30% of the time, and clean up the secondary blown coverages and this team can find themselves in the 12 team playoff.
Getting into the 12 team playoff seems realistic given that they won against an direct competition. But i dont see them beating Ohio State at all given the quality of players right now.
@@adrianbuck8772 beating OSU most likely not (as of now) but could still beat a team like Oregon who is giving up 5.6 yards per carry right now and has played Idaho, Boise State (actually a good team in terms of rushing offense) and Oregon State. If Michigan's defense plays like it did against USC and the offense continues to run good and hard and finds a good way to get Orji developed in the pass game more and more each week there is no reason Michigan couldn't end up being a 10-2 team in the playoff in my opinion
@@jacobheminger5275 Thats their path. 10-2 probably gets them in (even if they lose by a lot against Ohio State) but if they have another loss it gets really difficult.
As a SC fan I’m happy with the improvements from last year, but this game just shows what we all already knew, they have to get bigger & stronger on the offensive & defensive line in order to compete in the Big 10.
I was dejected after the first half. To come back the way we did is something I had no idea we had in us. It takes tough, hard fought losses like this to build the sort of seasoning USC needs to compete for B1G 10 Championships, Playoffs, and National Championships.
No it shows that USC needs to have their own personal referees like Michigan did that was some of the shittiest Homer refereeing I've ever seen not a single holding call against Michigan I don't mind losing I just don't like the game being taken away in this case handed to the home team
@@FIGHTONnatties Yeah it sucks to not get some of those calls but no excuses, the bigger picture is they’re not quite there yet, but are heading in the right direction.
same, and yes that run-only scheme wont work on every team, Orji needs to get some confidence in throwing, there were a few chances for some decent passes on saturday but they weren't taken or they were overthrown.
Note that USC also relied on big plays and big mistakes. UM will make big plays all year because other teams need to pull in thier secondary to deal with the power of the run ( remember you only need to average 2.5 yrds/carry to march all the way down the field. When other teams pull in thier secondary they can easily get burned.
Thank you, Joel. Hope springs eternal for this long suffering Buffs fan and CU alum. However this season turns out, we’re definitely having more fun than we’ve had in decades.

These question marks about Will Howard are bizarre. He has looked completely capable of operating this offense in every game. He throws one interception and Joel immediately fixates on it like it’s some huge concern. Meanwhile Ewers and Manning have thrown 4 interceptions this year.
It seems like Brent Venables doesn't really pay that much attention to the offense. It's clear that his primary focus is the defense. Just like Lincoln Riley's primary focus was the offense.
Great job calling the game on Saturday. You provide insights that only someone with your experience can, such as how linemen helmets fall off most often from facemasks. While such an observation may seem like common sense, the truth is, it’s math that a casual viewer (like me) would never do, and it adds value and depth to the viewing experience. Thank you.
TENN is a dangerous opponent for many ! -- This freshman QB had his 1st road game in a hostile place (?) so look out for the future ?!? -- Georgia looked vulnerable in Lexington ! -- We shall see with Bama and Texas.....
College Football was and will continue to be relevant with or without the playoff. The playoff models have a place, but NOT during the regular season. I love the regular season and have loved winning Championships (Bama fan since 92). I wish we could stop marketing a product that is an add on to a sport that had plenty of value without it. Love the show and love the passion! I love College Football!!!🏈
UM needs to be able to trust Orji to throw: screens, drags, curls, and mix in a skinny post to keep the DBs honest. LESS than 100yds of total offense from the QB is UNACCEPTABLE!
I don't think anybody expected an air circus from Orji, but the big reveal was that he is plodding runner with no elusiveness. He is a large guy and tough to bring down, but that does not, by itself, make a guy a running threat. It was very impressive, though, when he went from his back on the turf to leaping to a standing position. What an athlete!!
It's unacceptable that UM can't reload after this 3 year run. Their AD Warde Manuel has no idea what he's doing with NIL. The basketball program has been in shambles since he took over as AD.
Klatt spoke truth about the game as usually love to see it as a SC fan felt like the Refs could've called it more fairly seemed a lil bais but all in all felt good about it USC moving forward definitely think they should extend are Defensive staff Lynn , Matt , Eric n Shaun those 4 especially and bring in a New Oline Coach ares can be a assist/OC as he is now and helo Riley manage the clock better but USC still has a lil more muscle to put on but loved them boys effort they didn't give up and played to the end.
If Tenessees offense is elite, Oklahomas defense is elite. Let any other team turn the ball over 3 times against that offense and see if they can hold them under 30. Doesn't happen. Oklahoma suffered a 10 point loss to an elite team. Pray they don't figure out the QB position and turn their offense around, that defense is legit. Most teams are contenders at this point in the season. So, yeah.
How can you feel good as a Michigan fan when they only had six yards of total offense and the entire second half up until the last 2 minutes and 33 seconds? I don't feel good at all
I like how the NCAA refs let the kids play. I've loved the calling thus far. Let them play. Let the CBs and WRs grapple back and forth. I agree about the NFL. The NFL is no longer hiding they want the Chiefs to succeed. All of the calls in the NFL and bad calls have made the NFL game very boring this season.
Joel, I wish you’d look into my Alma Mater, Harding University. They’re #1 in D2 this year and won the national championship last year and set a collegiate record of over 6,000 rushing yards in a season. And basically the same exact team is back this year. If you love running the ball, this triple option team is one to watch.
Correction they did it to USC in the first half. This team went right back to its former self in the second half. Defense blowing assignments everywhere. Offense one dimensional and unable to get a first down. Until the final drive. Against an undersized USC defensive line. To me this game only ensured my fears. Michigan was also severely out coached in this game unless their goal was to let USC dominate the second half.
I don't think Wester slipped both he and Baylor were eyeing the ball. Wester repositions himself to catch the ball and in doing so Baylor slips and fall.
Hey joel, I never thought it was a quarterback thing, OU. This all comes down to the offensive coordinator. We all know that I thought he would be gone by now, but obviously they don't have anyone to replace him yet. I'm sure he's a nice guy. You are right though, that was as bad offense that you've ever watched. That comes down to the coach.
Michigan’s DLine looked great, but their best position group by far was the referees, especially in the first half. They did a great job stemming USCs momentum
GO Buffs! That game was incredible. Shedeur is clutch and elite I dont care what anyone says. Travis Hunter is the best College Football player in the country. ZERO debate at this point no other player in the country is dominating both offense and defense.
@@user-dw9fc6ev7xthe conversation gets interesting if they win 7. I think the win argument holds less weight for a non-QB. But I agree. It’s probably gonna have to be 8 or 9 wins because that’s what Lamar Jackson and Jayden Daniels did.
@@user-dw9fc6ev7x It's different for Travis because he has so many highlights and people see them on way more national TV games than would normally be the case for a 4-6 win team. I think he'll get the Heisman if he doesn't get hurt and miss a lot of games. He is also a very mature, smart, humble and down-to-earth person.
Orji can run an offense effectively as long as the playcalling forces the defense to spread out. This means RPOs, jet sweeps with semaj morgan, reverses, double reverses, double reverse passes (they have a QB turned WR in Kendrick Bell) in addition to the physical wildcat style offense we've seen with Orji.
I just have to mention how insane it was for Michigan to call a pass on 2nd down on the three yard line with 50 seconds left. After Mullings proved that he was the only threat they had all day, and they have three chances to just give him the ball to pick up three lousy yards, they call a pass play for the worst throwing QB in the FBS, lol. A wasted down, and it forced Mullings to do it in two tries rather than three. Man, that was an infuriating play call, lol.
It's was more than likely all apart of the plan so that if they went to 4th down a throw was a possible call. If u run it on 2nd and 3rd down, very obvious a run is coming on 4th of u didn't get it on the prior two tries. It's called playing chess and coaching
What a relief it was to watch Orji throw that pass about 10 rows up in the stands. A lesser man competing for the starting job would have forced it into triple coverage trying to make a hero play.
@@themichiganman1290 it was obvious Michigan was running the whole game, lol. The fact that play didn’t even come close to succeeding after “playing chess” suggests just how dumb it was. Mullings ran over them all day despite the clear intention of him running over them, lol. The benefit of Orji isn’t the threat of a pass, but the threat of a different ball carrier. Don’t need to throw the ball twenty feet out of the back of the end zone to benefit from a misdirection.
USC looked strange that game. weird play calling and just came out flat in the first half in that big house environment. but they made adjustments and the second half showed how good they can be vs an elite michigan D. not the worst loss if ur a usc fan
I agree with Joel about letting the kids storm the field after a great win, my problem however, in this case is that the fans were on the field with a pending video review. What would have happened if the ball crossed the goal line and it was ruled a touchdown with an extra point for double OT? There were hundreds if not thousands of people on the field at that point and it would have been near impossible to get them off and continue to play the rest of the game. If the fans were to storm after the officials reviewed the play that’s fine with me, but they didn’t wait.
To be honest it was there homecoming also .. that's amazing man... Lifetime memory. That game will live forever with those students and fans... Amazing (cu)
I agree with Joel on Buckeyes first half. Three kicks in a row gave marshall excellent field position. The second half was a shutout and the score could have been much worse. I hate that early week off. Go Bucks !!!!!!!
Also, the one time Michigan did try to throw the ball their DB from USC pass interference them twice on the same route no call and he was cooked. This is why you can’t blame officiating because it goes both ways.
The sad part is, a program like Michigan couldn’t recruit and have a qb waiting to take over for JJ. They had to make do and scab together what they had available.
As a Michigan fan, I've had similar thoughts. I thought we'd at least have a game manager in Tuttle or Warren. I love Orji but it's clear there's no trust in his throwing given the play calls.
They didn't have a qb available because they didn't address the position through the portal. Head coach rookie mistake. Hard to cut your teeth coaching at Michigan.
@@AngryOtter614 Michigan doesnt really go heavy NIL on guys outside of their progamm. So by attracting an proven guy in the transfer portal they would have to go clearly away from the approach so far(by getting him big NIL endorsements),which wont sit well with the rest of the roster.
Buckeye here 👋 I concur. Will Howard. We are definitely going to complain. They shouldn’t of even scored. & You better tighten up buddy. lol but seriously . Good game. Don’t slip again
I got to hear you call the game for my buckeyes and I see you got them at number two I watch your show hey that's cool I think we'll prove ourselves down the road and I happen to like will Howard I think he's doing all he needs to do Joe great show till next time
Lets address some of Joel's "concerns" over how Will Howard is going to play the QB position... Howard is currently ranked #11 in passing efficiency the only pick Howard has thrown all season in was the ball he threw to Jerimiah Smith. IF you are going to try that it HAS to be out in FRONT of the wide receiver and you want to drop it on that outside shoulder. Should have gone to the check-down receiver. They do NOT need Howard to be a surgeon back there where they are putting the game on his arm. He has been SENSATIONAL so far. If he plays like this all season long, OSU is going to be a total nightmare to face.
My Lord guy, you can’t complement Michigan without a backhanded comment can you.. Well it’s the referees, really guy.. Donovan Edwards fumbled the ball on a 10 yard line. That’s why USC was able to catch up.
I like Klatt, only complaint is his bias and lean towards CU and their players....just a little over tge tip, but overall he's got great objective takes.
But you have to give CU a little credit for winning the 2nd Half in Lincoln 10-0. You know that Nebraska was trying to bury and completely humiliate them like Oregon did last season, but couldn't.
@@clu63 It was indeed a physical pounding in the 1st half, but a 20-10 final score and 2nd half shut-out by CU negates the technical definition of a pounding. I am the rare CU fan that roots for Matt Rhule and sometimes even the Huskers when they play other teams. After all the years since Callahan that Husker fans have suffered I have empathy for them now and hope the program can get back to good times.
People are fooled into thinking Nebraska is back because they are improved. You could see that in the 2nd Half vs CU. Nebraska can't bury competitive teams, and CU is actually improved also.
I was glad to see Smith correct what Joel keeps saying. That pass was not underthrown. Smith didn't run to where they practice it. There are no question marks with Howard. The only question marks I have are with Joel.
Let’s be real, Tennessee played extremely conservative offensively the second half. This offense typically operates 50/50 run/pass and this game was 49 Run/21 pass. It was go in, secure the win & roll into the bye week without many injuries.
I don’t care if people feel like UM didn’t dominate USC at any point during the game, or UM didn’t run all over the USC defense, etc., the point is UM Won the game. Period.
They gave up those rushing yards and still were in position to win the game with a defensive stop. So just maybe, a different call or nocall on a play can make or break a game.
Bro there was a CLEAR hold on the last winning play had they called it USC WINS yes you CAN call it on bad officiating despite 300 yards allowed they were up half way in the 4th forget all the facemas calls that were missed forget all the other holds and horsecollars. That ONE hold had it been called USC would have won.
Joel former Buff Big XII Champ here. As a former QB why do you think Sheduer is holding the ball so much? Is it that he isn't trying to mess up his passing pct?
Michigan is going to get better - Orgi is going to get more comfortable and when he does he will start making some very big plays with his feat and with his arm - most of his issues are mental blocks not physical limitations. Peopel should note that Michigan defensive secondary gave up a couple long pass plays that were infact desperate 3rd down and very long coversions that enabled USC to stay in the game. Net, Michigan's team is going to mature into winning more and more with running (pond and grind) and passing that is good enough to keep defenses unsure. Few teams are going to be able to handle the power and strength of Michigan defense and running attack. Any one that has to play Michigan better be ready for some serious smash football and get ready to feel the pain that comes with it.
Terrible officiating. But hats off to Michigan. Even though I thought there was clear holding calls on the 2 long run TDs, it wasn’t the Refs fault that they tried to arm tackle. Cant help but feel like the officiating was too one sided with a lot of missed calls, but we definitely couldn’t protect Moss today and had some really conservative play calls at weird times. Waaaay too many screens that were unsuccessful. Congrats again Michigan and thanks for winning it all last year so my Chargers could get Jim! fight on ✌️ bolt up⚡️
Complementing Travyeon with Judkins was the best possible thing for both of them. The single craziest stat about how stacked is this offense: Saturday was Egbuka's first TD of the season, the first receiver on a team that hung 22 touchdowns on opponents so far.
Joel constantly bringing up refs screwing over USC, but didnt watch the game and didnt see multiple Michigan drives die off of no calls for obvious USC jumping offsides on 3rd down
For me OSU needs to fix their line backers, Knowles played base defense didn't blitz or run anything but really base defense in that game, he was testing his linebackers
I agree... Was at the CSU game last year when the fans stormed the field (at 67 y/o and in good shape, still didn't want to join the youngsters and risk gettin; tumbled to turf!). Thing is, the official said on mic words to the effect of: "Ruled a touchdown" and then added "play under review'' but the mayhem had already started. I think he regrets not starting with ''Play under review'' and that would've lessened the field frenzy!
The only thing I can't understand is, why are we saying Tennessee's defense is so amazing and in the same breath saying the sooners offense is the worst we've ever seen and still scored on a "brilliant" defense and only lost by 10?
Tn went into prevent d because the game was out of reach unfortunately. Dont get me wrong, Hawkins was better than Arnold, but Tn wasnt dialing stuff up on him. TN D is VERY deep, and its quality depth as well.
I think Travis Hunter is the CLEAR frontrunner for the Heisman. Who is your Heisman frontrunner so far?
He’s a bit like Charles Woodson but maybe even better. He would totally deserve it if he keeps this up.
Hes still not gonna win it unfortunately . WR/CB on an unranked team just won’t

Hey Joel this 72 year old Marine loves you show and you are the only reason I will watch the Collin Cowheard show.
As a SC fan I’m happy with the improvements from last year, but this game just shows what we all already knew, they have to get bigger & stronger on the offensive & defensive line in order to compete in the Big 10.
I am impressed with the defensive turn around USC has made this season.
Lots to improve upon, yet the foundation is there to work with.
I was dejected after the first half. To come back the way we did is something I had no idea we had in us. It takes tough, hard fought losses like this to build the sort of seasoning USC needs to compete for B1G 10 Championships, Playoffs, and National Championships.
The defensive line was fine
No it shows that USC needs to have their own personal referees like Michigan did that was some of the shittiest Homer refereeing I've ever seen not a single holding call against Michigan I don't mind losing I just don't like the game being taken away in this case handed to the home team
@@FIGHTONnatties Yeah it sucks to not get some of those calls but no excuses, the bigger picture is they’re not quite there yet, but are heading in the right direction.
Michigan fan...glad for the win, but can't depend on big plays to happen every game. Got to get some kind of passing game.
same, and yes that run-only scheme wont work on every team, Orji needs to get some confidence in throwing, there were a few chances for some decent passes on saturday but they weren't taken or they were overthrown.
Lincoln Riley saved yall🙃
No chance of beating ohio state without a good passing game.
@@gopher401 Iowa says, “hold my offense.”
I respect the fact he is calling himself out for what he said in the past about Clemson🙌
Thank you, Joel. Hope springs eternal for this long suffering Buffs fan and CU alum. However this season turns out, we’re definitely having more fun than we’ve had in decades.
SC is definitely tougher than last year, but there is still work to do there.
D coaching and scheme is way better. Need some personnel upgrades and more size.
@@cacogenicist it was never gonna be a one year fix. The portal definitely speeds things up but asking for a complete turnaround in one off-season is a tough ask. I fully expect them to be even better next year and I think by 2026 SC is gonna be cemented in the top 10, at least this Canes fan hopes so. College football is better when SC is good. Good luck the rest of the way!!

People aren’t even realizing. When they say lock down corner, he’s truly lockdown to where he’s not even getting targeted. Imagine if they give him actual chances to make plays. Baylor literally didn’t go at him directly once

Hook 'em! and Go Blue!
These question marks about Will Howard are bizarre. He has looked completely capable of operating this offense in every game. He throws one interception and Joel immediately fixates on it like it’s some huge concern. Meanwhile Ewers and Manning have thrown 4 interceptions this year.
Would love to hear more on Illinois - Nebraska - what a matchup
It seems like Brent Venables doesn't really pay that much attention to the offense. It's clear that his primary focus is the defense. Just like Lincoln Riley's primary focus was the offense.
Great job calling the game on Saturday. You provide insights that only someone with your experience can, such as how linemen helmets fall off most often from facemasks. While such an observation may seem like common sense, the truth is, it’s math that a casual viewer (like me) would never do, and it adds value and depth to the viewing experience. Thank you.
Texas is looking really good
Illinois really surprised me w how good they played at Nebraska. Ill b in state college Saturday night to see them play penn st. WE ARE!!
First play of next game, need to do play action from under center and chuck it down field.
Another incredible analysis for college football. He talked as if he has the inside track for all the teams!
100% agree on the storming the field. Always appreciate your commentary Joel!
Excellent breakdown of OU's offense
It's unacceptable that UM can't reload after this 3 year run. Their AD Warde Manuel has no idea what he's doing with NIL. The basketball program has been in shambles since he took over as AD.
Michigan is diversity woketard hire university
Klatt spoke truth about the game as usually love to see it as a SC fan felt like the Refs could've called it more fairly seemed a lil bais but all in all felt good about it USC moving forward definitely think they should extend are Defensive staff Lynn , Matt , Eric n Shaun those 4 especially and bring in a New Oline Coach ares can be a assist/OC as he is now and helo Riley manage the clock better but USC still has a lil more muscle to put on but loved them boys effort they didn't give up and played to the end.
Are the Vols national title contenders?
For what? Beating a high school team? No
It was cool to see you at the Ohio State game walking the field and talking to coaches and live on Big Noon Kickoff! 🤘
So, yeah.
Yes. Boomer.
No! Much too early in the season.
I appreciate the insight regarding the Sooners' offensive woes.
Thanks showing canes some love!

Keep up the great work Klatt 🙏🏿
Officiating needs to be redone across the board in the NCAA and NFL.
A great place to start !
IKR. USC DBs got away with holding all game long. Didn't matter, but still!
@@thebighousencaaattendancer478 missed calls on both sides.
@@user-dw9fc6ev7x We got away with two face masks, I'll give you that. But USC DBs got away with about two DOZEN holds!
I keep thinking Joel Klatt is about to start rapping. It was an epic day! Epic day! ...It was an epic day!!

If Travis hunter continues to dominate against better competition(which he has not) then yes he is the best player on the country

@joel: after ur reminder, i faintly remember seeing the 1-play-only highlight of ur '04 miracle pass vs ksu - i'd forgotten about that one. 😂
The sad part is, a program like Michigan couldn’t recruit and have a qb waiting to take over for JJ. They had to make do and scab together what they had available.
Also the lack of elite WR recruits/players makes the QB job more difficult compare to Ohio State for example.
Hard to cut your teeth coaching at Michigan.
orji was the recruit to take over. apparently harbaugh just didnt try to develop him from where he was as a freshman knowing he was gonna leave

You should have a weekly Travis Hunter segment.

Nah that’s just Nebraska football we take the foot off the gas and can’t put teams away.
“Winning a half” isn’t a thing. A 28-10 loss is still a pounding.
@@clu63 It was indeed a physical pounding in the 1st half, but a 20-10 final score and 2nd half shut-out by CU negates the technical definition of a pounding. After all the years since Callahan that Husker fans have suffered I have empathy for them now and hope the program can get back to good times.
Moral victory at best. Nebraska blasted you when it mattered.
I always thought the big noon kickoff Saturday game was meant to be meaningful. This one was an infomercial for Ohio State.
Period.

For USC, hard to blame officials when you give up 300 yards rushing.
it's kinda hard to not run 300 yards when 99% percent of your plays are runs against a mid run defense.
And a pick 6
They gave up those rushing yards and still were in position to win the game with a defensive stop. So just maybe, a different call or nocall on a play can make or break a game.
Bro there was a CLEAR hold on the last winning play had they called it USC WINS yes you CAN call it on bad officiating despite 300 yards allowed they were up half way in the 4th forget all the facemas calls that were missed forget all the other holds and horsecollars.
Michigan is a more talented version of last year's Nebraska 🤣
Terrible officiating. But hats off to Michigan. Even though I thought there was clear holding calls on the 2 long run TDs, it wasn’t the Refs fault that they tried to arm tackle. Cant help but feel like the officiating was too one sided with a lot of missed calls, but we definitely couldn’t protect Moss today and had some really conservative play calls at weird times. Waaaay too many screens that were unsuccessful. Congrats again Michigan and thanks for winning it all last year so my Chargers could get Jim! fight on ✌️ bolt up⚡️
The run game is nothing without a great O line. Go Buckeyes
Complementing Travyeon with Judkins was the best possible thing for both of them.
The single craziest stat about how stacked is this offense: Saturday was Egbuka's first TD of the season, the first receiver on a team that hung 22 touchdowns on opponents so far.
Michigan's OL is developing right before our eyes, and Orji will develop as well.
Joel constantly bringing up refs screwing over USC, but didnt watch the game and didnt see multiple Michigan drives die off of no calls for obvious USC jumping offsides on 3rd down
He commentates for OSU not surprised.
Refs this year across the board have been bad
For me OSU needs to fix their line backers, Knowles played base defense didn't blitz or run anything but really base defense in that game, he was testing his linebackers
Why would you run anything but vanilla D Against Marshall?
We’ve got a cooker coming, and you don’t want to give anything away.
Storming the field at that game was understandable except... it wasn't over! Wait for the review!!
