I always overplant onions. I dehydrate my thinnings (with the dehydrator out on the covered patio, because it sure is a potent odor!) to use over the winter in soups and such. Great onion flavor, and it saves my stored onions for fresh eating in salads or for grilling. I also keep some chopped and frozen, just because I like having them handy like that.
Those look delicious already. Outstanding for eating raw and also cooking. :D I could eat east Texas (noonday or 1015s) onions and tomatoes every day. Add some jalapenos and cilantro for salsa - all day long..
I do seed onions in containers as well and then I do transplant them to the ground and leave a few in the container to fully grow. This way animals will not eat much of my little plants. Onions bolt because of the air temperature gets warmer and the soil's temperature as well. Soil's temperature in pots are higher than in the ground.
You can get big onions in containers if you give them space. I have quite a few in containers and some in raised beds. I went all organic this year and my onions are behind on having enough leaves.
I can taste some fish fillets already. Looking good sir!! We have Candy Onions in wicking tubs right now as well. We are a few weeks behind you. Trying to get some cool season stuff before the heat gets them. It was a gamble, but first year using tubs and wanted to try. We have broccoli, kale, iceburg lettuce, cauliflower as well. We will see if we make it, have broccoli heads forming now. The broccoli absolutely love the wicking tubs!!! Little further north than you in SW Arkansas.
Chop and freeze what you can't eat. Of course they aren't as good as fresh but, you can use them for cooking! I can grow onions but the bulbs never really develop. I may try this method this year
I added onions in a pot this year after I saw this video, they are doing great! I also planted some in the ground in a spot that is too shady. That batch isn't as big as my batch in the pot. do you think I could safely move some of those and still get a nice onion?
That's exactly what I plan on doing. I have about a dozen wicking tubs already setup from last year, I just need to add some more dirt and then I'll be all over it. LOL
Howdy, Texas, greetings from Wyoming! The growing season is SO much shorter here. You're pulling onions in June, while typically don't plant anything until Mother's Day. I'm trying to adapt your technique to a much colder spring. Will compare notes in the fall. I'm really interested in growing root vegetables in containers that are suitable for over-winter storage (beets?).
Well, I can't help much with gardening advice for your climate. And... I've never raised beets! 😎 I do wish you well in your endeavors, though. Let me know how it goes for you
Beautiful crop! How much water do you give these and how often? If I don’t how the water system set up like you do (which is awesome) how much water would you recommend per pot? Thanks :)
These have a "weep hole" in the side so they can't be 'overwatered". So many variables to your question. Zone, climate, temp, rainfall... etc I would water 2-3 times a week and see how they look, but make sure the containers drain well

I absolutely love your videos. I am not trying to start conflict as I respect your work but I feel compelled to say this. You are very knowledgeable but until we start waking up to the fact that our weather is being manipulated, things will get worse. I miss the world we used to live in. I have a website that I found that shows all the articles where "they" have told us they are doing it to "help" us. These articles go back to the late 1800s. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Its much appreciated. I won't be offended if you remove this comment. I just don't know how to get people to wake up and research. The worlds food supply is being manipulated. God bless.
Man i wish i could mind them tubs around here ! the feed stores here stopped using them and went to 1/2 55 gal barrels for the ranchers, i have an electric golf cart (needs batteries) for sale want to trade for tubs ? wonder how taters would do in them ?
I think taters would do ok... but never tried them For me, since taters are sooooo cheap at the store, I can't see tying up one of these tubs to grow them, when they could be used for 'maters or peppers or ONIONS! hahaha
Wowzers... this looks great... I need more wicking tubs!! 😊 Blessings 🌞 Question... have you ever used a grow box for Rasberries?? Do ya think they would do well?? I got these from BW Nursery the day you were there, yes I should have already gotten them in, however with the tornad and clean up, just now getting to them... thanks and blessings
It depends on one's goal. If you want all big onions at one time then they need more space. But if you want to enjoy onions throughout the season and like the smaller ones then Alan's method is perfect. Everyone gets to decide what expenditure of time and resources is appropriate for them.
Nice reply, Diane, thanks! This was mainly an experiment, and from what I'm seeing it went well. Now... am I going to get some BIG onions from these tube... not sure yet. Stay tuned :)
@@BIGALTX I love experiments (I am a scientist, after all). How else will we know what can be done if we don't try? I think you will get big onions. I know I bring up HGV a lot but check out this video ua-cam.com/video/g-UxFL0sZNo/v-deo.html The reveal is at 8:40. He got 3.25 pounds of onions in a 10" diameter pot. Can't wait to see how well yours do. 🙂
I planted these onions 2 months ago in Wicking Tubs. They are really doing great. Check them out!
where did you get the wicking tube and around how much were they. I am planning on doing some onions in tubs and need to get more

I haven't tried freezing them, but WILL do that this year, thanks!

Makes sense... thanks! 👍😎
It is the extreme weather changes that make them go to seed and bolt. Looking good for the most part though!
👍😎
Beautiful onion garden. I love your containers.
Thank you so much 😊
Carlsbad Here! So glad you made this Video!! Thank You !!!
Glad to help. Onions really did well in these tubs so don’t be afraid to try it :-)
We put some in tubs in greenhouse in Jan. They are very tall and looking good. As always thanks Alan.
Sounds great!
Glad they worked out for you :)
Thank you for sharing!👍👍
Thanks for visiting

Wow amazing
Thanks for watching, FFL!
Nice looking onions.
Thanks for watching, CAJ !

I’m going to try this. Thank You
Please do!
Those greens make a fantastic pesto!

What's the secret for big bulbs? My onions do well but the bulbs are never up to snuff.
Here's what I do: ua-cam.com/video/2EmIUhbwx6g/v-deo.html
Yikes I need to plant more I only put 6 or 7 in 5 gallon pot
Yours have room to get big. Mine don't. That's why I'm pulling some of them early
Pickle those little onions, or can them whole...they look nice!
Thanks for the tip!
Those onions did great.
So far... I hope some of them get BIG! 😎
Thank you
You're welcome

One of the scariest things you can hear is:
"I'm from the Government, and I'm here to help"
Run!
Cannu talk about how you store them long term?
Yes sir... I'll show that in about a month or so
Keep watching :)

@@BIGALTX agreed
I think many of mine didn’t survive those few hard freezes we had
Being new to Walker county Texas is it too late to start another bunch ?
Probably not too late, but you won't have time for them to get very big
IF you can even FIND some.
Hopefully you can...
Are these in full sun ? Thanks so much
Yes they are
Most ALL veggies need to be in full sun

I've got a blackberry in an EarthBox. Been there 2 years.
Did great!
I did the same but some tubs the leaves went pale. Any idea what causes that? The ones I planted in the ground are doing well.
I don't know. This is my first year to try this on a larger scale.
Did you fertilize them?
@@BIGALTX thinking I did not do enough fertilizer
@@BIGALTX Nitrogen deficit maybe?
If you cut the greens off to use will it kill off the onion ?
I don't think it will if you just trim them... and don't completely cut them off
Really great do you eat the green part
Most folks use them in their cooking like chives
I eat a little of them, but not much
I suppose you could dehydrate the ones you pull?!
Yep, or pickle, or freeze 👍😎
Thanks!
Dehydrate the ones you pull.
I might do that... of freeze them... or PICKLE them Yummmmmmmmmmm
Chop them up and put in the freezer!
So... they freeze well?
Yes, I found they do best when chopped up but you can also do slices.
I do not understand why people do this when they know it is too close. Waiste of time and resources. 🤷🏻♀️
