I think that he didn't sit in his father's chair because it was his father's chair. He didn't sit in it out of respect for his father. My father passed away 3 years ago and when I go see my mother and we sit at the table, I never sit in my father's chair.

I love how they reproduced this scene right out of the novel. Right down to the detail of Sonny breaking off a piece of bread and scooping up the peppers and olive in the pan to make himself a "sloppy sandwich" as termed in book.
As further indication that it was peppers, take note that next to the bread that Caan rips is a plate of Italian sausage. That says to me she was cooking sausage and peppers.
In the book Sonny was described as the best executioner in gang war in the history of crime in America that too when he was only 19.He singlehandedly fought with independent Irish gunmen and Luca brasi fought off the families supporting them. When it came to war nobody was like Sonny not even Michael, the only thing which was holding back Sonny was his temper and anger management issues which eventually lead to his death.
James Caan is the ace in the hole of The Godfather. He owns the middle third of the film (from the Don being shot to his own end). Even in Part II when he pops up for his one scene near the end the movie gets a kick start of energy that it lacks most of the time (Andrew Dice Clay based his entire career on copying Caan in that scene).
Interesting you should say that Andrew Dice Clay based his entire career on copying James Caan in that scene. I saw Andrew Dice Clay on an interview with Larry King in the early 90’s and he stated that a guy came to lay bricks at his home 22yrs ago and he’s been imitating him ever since. So I wonder which one is it? Is he imitating James Caan?, the bricklayer guy?, or was James Caan the guy who was laying the bricks back then?
+Shagrat65 I remember reading "Chances" about a Mafia Family and one of the Minor Characters eats Spaghetti and he mops up the Sauce with Sourdough Bread.
Food is very important to Italians, period. When my father-in-law died, his widow, my husband's stepmother, was considered inhospitable for not providing proper funeral food, or any food. It is an infama, just about the worst thing a person could do. My husband and I, with help from extended family, later had a memorial Mass and reception- with plenty of food!
Watch the deleted scene where Sonny gets the news. After he hangs up, he squeezes the phone in anguish and rage. He can't completely clear his head because he struggles to remember Tom's number and is confused talking to Theresa. Basically, you're watching a man in shock. Brilliant work, Mr. Caan.
I haven't seen a scene yet that I'm glad they cut out. Every second of this movie is a masterpiece. I wouldn't care if it was 5 hours long. I wish they had kept everything in.
This is the one that should have been kept. Mama was emotionally prepared for this. Sonny wasn't. Hes surprised by her reaction and finds comfort in bread instead of from his mother. Doesn't sit in his father's chair. Doesn't want Clemenzas people because Paulie is in that regime and that's who he suspects. This also showed Sonny as more than just a hothead. Uncertain, sad, reverent, suspicious. Not just angry and aggressive.
So well said. Maybe this is exactly why they left out that part. Maybe Coppola did not want to represent Sonny more than a hothead. He wanted people to percieve Michael as 'the golden boy' or 'the best of the Corleone brothers' by making the other two look like dumper than they actually are. As a matter of fact, I can't even recall a scene where we see Sonny alone. He is always surrounded by his sidekicks and we hardly ever hear any good dialogue from him. Even Clemenza has a famous motto: leave the gun, take the cannoli. Sonny has none. The film portrays him as a shallow, violent person with anger management issues and that's all we are ever to find out about him.
@@fridakahlo4225 I disagree Sonny has some of the best one liners in this movie “this is a business Tom and this man is taking it very personal” or “touch my sister again and I’ll kill ya” lmao he was funny and “bada bing bada bang then BOOM” I hear that get used on a daily 🤣💀
@@Martydoessykes One of Sonny's lines literally brought the house down when I first viewed it. When Sonny, Clemenza, Tessio were planning where to hide the gun in the men's room Sonny cracked something like "That gun better be easy for Mike to find because I don't want my brother coming out of there with just his dick in his hand." That was stunning for a 1972 movie audience. :O :)
"Santino did they kill your father" that line reveals so much. She not only understands how serious it is, and the position that they're in, she knows what might happen if Vito dies. She's been dreading but also waiting for this moment for years. Like she's gone to bed every night grateful that it was put off another day.
@@laurainesacosta4631 That is why Michael's marriage to Kay failed when it would've succeeded with Appolonia. Appolonia understood that world and knew not to ask questions among other things. Kay was too modern a woman (in the context of the 1950s) to "know her place" (not endorsing that thinking, just describing it).
This really displays the difference between Sonny and Michael. Sonny is emotional and you can see he's trying to keep it together. Compare that how cool Michael is, even as early as the hospital scene.

That's blasphemy. Part of the art of Godfather II is how the story shifts back and forth between Vito in 1910 and Michael in 1950 and the edits between the two. It's like saying you'd rather see Pulp Fiction in chronological order instead of the way Tarantino sequenced it. It's destroying a significant part of the story telling.

Women need to know their place in society, cooking for the family, raising them right, teaching them about respect, not being whores, aborting killing babies crap and divorcing like today.
Why don't more folks put on Sonny's shoes and see if they fit? His father had been shot and hospitalized, Tom was picked up by Sollozzo and held for some time against his will, Fredo was reduced to a sobbing and scared mess...later, his sister was beaten by his brother in law (remember, Sonny was the one that introduced Connie to Carlo), then, there is a second attempt on Vito, Michael's jaw is broken, leading Michael to step in to "fix the problem" at Louis' Restaurant. If I was Sonny, by the time I had gotten another phone call from Connie despite having threatened Carlo against repeating his mistake, I might have gone out on the turnpike by myself as well. I mean, come on, Sonny wasn't simply a hothead, he was driven to his end (literally) by trying to carry too much weight on his own shoulders instead of asking for some help from Tom, Tessio and Clemenza.
Every Italian can relate to Sonny grabbing that loaf of bread when his mother left the kitchen, and tearing off a piece and dipping it in the warm tomato sauce on the stovetop. Those details are only possible when a film is directed by a person wholly familiar with the subject matter. Francis Ford Coppola grew up in an Italian-American home where this practice was a cultural norm.
@@Rockhound6165....how do you know it wasn't tomato sauce? They should have kept this scene in too. It really shows how Sonny realized he would have to take up the mantle. See how he stopped himself from sitting in the Don's chair and sits beside. Shows some reluctance to accept that the Don might be dead and that he would be the boss.
I don't agree. Mainly because of his reaction as well as his mother's reaction. Too calm, eating bread as if nothing. Keeping it would've diminished the impact of Vito's hit.
guibox3 - Good observation, and I think you're absolutely right.
I think that he didn't sit in his father's chair because it was his father's chair. He didn't sit in it out of respect for his father. My father passed away 3 years ago and when I go see my mother and we sit at the table, I never sit in my father's chair.
@@OmarYoussef11 I don't agree with you. Mainly because his reaction as well as his mother's reaction were perfect. Too calm? How do you know? She dropped what she was doing and her only thought was to change her clothes to go to her husband. If she was "calm" she would have just finished cooking. She also knew what the family was and knew this day would come. As for Sonny. How is eating bread signify acting as nothing happened? Binge eating is a trademark stress induced behavior. A sub conscious one as well.
These deleteds are such a treasure for Godfather aficionados. Almost like seeing a new Godfather you've never seen before. The 8-hour Saga (with all the deleted scenes included) is probably the greatest movie ever made. Why the hell isn't it available for purchase anywhere?

I love how they reproduced this scene right out of the novel. Right down to the detail of Sonny breaking off a piece of bread and scooping up the peppers and olive in the pan to make himself a "sloppy sandwich" as termed in book.
Ahhh so that's what is was
I’ve found that most deleted scenes are almost identical to the novel. Shit, the whole movie is .
And to think someone argued with me that it was gravy.
Sonny always mashes his bread into the sauce, really absorbs it. Always make me hungry watching it!
+Shagrat65 I remember reading "Chances" about a Mafia Family and one of the Minor Characters eats Spaghetti and he mops up the Sauce with Sourdough Bread.
Fuck now I'm hungry!
I think it was his anger and frustration he took out on the bread dipping it into the sauce.
He does it later as well mate when Clemenza is cooking. He really digs it in the sauce and makes me real hungry when I watch it!

Food is very important in Godfather and Goodfellas.
And Sopranos...
Food is important to most people, because if people don't eat food, people will die.
@@ANTE2205 yeah but that should be another topic since there’s a big time difference

Love it! The Saga edition is my favorite because it puts all these deleted scenes back in! Omg LOVE IT!
Caan.
I remember watching The Godfather Movies and even The Sopranos and wishing I could eat at their Kitchen Table, Restaurant or wherever they ate.
I know. Italian food is just flat good. Especially when homemade by an old Italian mama. That's the best.
You got that right! Remember the Scene where Ralph on The Sopranos is apologizing to Tony and Tony is eating dinner so casually it was chilling.
+laminage Actually, I've never seen The Sopranos. I hear it's excellent, though!
You'd be in for a treat! It's funny and dramatic at the same time.
+Kevin Davis don't you mean.
that a de best?
I haven't seen a scene yet that I'm glad they cut out. Every second of this movie is a masterpiece. I wouldn't care if it was 5 hours long. I wish they had kept everything in.
MORE PLEASE......
When Sonny, Clemenza, Tessio were planning where to hide the gun in the men's room Sonny cracked something like "That gun better be easy for Mike to find because I don't want my brother coming out of there with just his dick in his hand."
That was stunning for a 1972 movie audience.
:O
:)
@@johndates9827 exactly 🤣🤣🤣 that was one of the best lines in the whole trilogy 😭
I love this scene. This is the moment Sonny realized that he’s possibly the new Don. He handled it like a boss.
"Santino did they kill your father" that line reveals so much. She not only understands how serious it is, and the position that they're in, she knows what might happen if Vito dies. She's been dreading but also waiting for this moment for years. Like she's gone to bed every night grateful that it was put off another day.
She was content with her place in the family, she understood to never share men's pain because they never share women's.
@@laurainesacosta4631
That is why Michael's marriage to Kay failed when it would've succeeded with Appolonia. Appolonia understood that world and knew not to ask questions among other things. Kay was too modern a woman (in the context of the 1950s) to "know her place" (not endorsing that thinking, just describing it).
@@arrow1414very true!
Without this scene, no wonder Sonny had always been underrated.
Love all these extra Sonny scenes.
This really displays the difference between Sonny and Michael. Sonny is emotional and you can see he's trying to keep it together. Compare that how cool Michael is, even as early as the hospital scene.
Always loved how he dips that chunk of bread into the sauce
"I like to sop, too."--Corrado "Junior" Soprano
Sonny was my favorite character in the movie. James Caan was an EXCELLENT Santino Corleone.
No scenes in The Godfather should be deleted. That's a crime!
I would pay someone good money to slice all these deleted scenes into the movie to give us the full, unedited cut!
RIP JAMES CAAN(Sonny) 💔 -- 6 JULY 2022
I like how Sonny didn't want to sit in his father's chair as to say not yet!
I wish they release THE GODFATHER SAGA. It shows The Godfather part 1 and 2 in a chronological order with deleted scenes like this one.
I remember as a teen (1980) getting the 3 VHS tapes and it started at the beginning ( 1901) and going to young vito (DeNiro) and then to old vito (Brando)it was great . It came with this cool book with behind the scenes of the movie ...I watched it probably 20x and enjoyed every time !
Now that sounds good.
I think HBO on demand has it, presently. a must see.
I would have LOVED an older brother like Sonny.
What surprised me (which in hindsight shouldn't have) was how calm Sonny's mother was when he told her about Vito...
Been through it before.
cougarhunter33 Exactly.
Charles Martel the woman was not stupid she knew what the Don was, but my understanding is back in those days she didnt concern herself with that it wasnt her place..it was "mens" business..there was no feminist movement or equal rights here hers was to take care of tge home and children and her husband was head of tge house what he said goes
Damn I wish we could have those days now!
I friggin' love this chiarascura. It's like a painting. What a great DP!!
"Inside baseball" stuff.
Wasn't tomato sauce. His mother was frying peppers.
@@Rockhound6165 Exactly! Food was such a major part of The Movie. I remember even feeling hungry when it was described in The Book.
@@Rockhound6165....how do you know it wasn't tomato sauce? If she was just frying peppers, it would have been in olive oil and I highly doubt Sonny would satisfy his tastes for food by dipping bread in olive oil alone....
Although it's not farfetched, it's unlikely...I say it was tomato sauce because he took it with him to the don's office as he was making his calls. Tomato sauce on bread is less messier to spill than olive oil is to drip all over...and heaven forbid if anyone soiled the don's office with dripping foodstuffs.

Always struck me too. It's in December, when it gets dark at 4:30 or 5 in New York. That music that starts at 1:33 might be my favorite of all the music in the trilogy, and it's so fitting.
I’m deeply torn. I LOVE the extra scenes that were cut out, but I LOVE the theatrical version because it flows so well 😩😩😩🤌🏻

The music truly makes this film.
The book says that Santino when he was calm was a great strategist when he organized an attack.
But Santino's weak point was that he didn't know how to control his emotions.
Despite his temper sonny has a warmth to him that micheal won't ever have
This is a woman who has been married to a gangster for a long time. When her son tells her that her husband has been hurt, her first reaction isn't shock or panic, and she just calmly asks if he's been killed.
in the book, it's explained that Vito had been shot in 1935 aswell. She has literally been trough it before
@@obiwanfx I believe that's also why Vito talks the way he does, as if he had a gunshot wound around the neck area that damaged his vocal chords.
There’s so much in this scene, why chop it?! The house being so dark and depressing, unlike every other scene where it’s bright a full of action. I also love how Sonny grabs the loaf of bread and rips a big piece off, like he’s so pissed he wishes it was Sollozzo’s face!! The mom’s reaction is incredible too, it’s like she knows this is a possibility, she prays it never happens, but is always ready for it, and that’s why she’s so calm and not a total basket case when Sonny tells her Vito is hurt. Sonny deciding to pull up a chair in his father’s office instead of sitting behind the desk is great on so many levels.
Something to acknowledge is also when Michael goes to seek counsel from his mother in 2. She is also blind to the reality of the “family” situation.

What a crime to delete these scenes for any reason ever.
This scene makes me think Santino wouldve been an alright boss. Especially if he wouldve found an underboss he wouldve listened to.
Look at how prepared mom was to hear of Don Vito’s death. She was made for the life and knew every single piece of detail. Almost no emotion, she had been prepared by the Don himself

Love how this deleted scene is single handedly better than any movie to come out this decade thus far.
The role of Mother is probably the least appreciated one in the movie, probably because she had so little time on screen. But she is the one that had to suffer tragedy after tragedy because of the decisions made by the men in her life, by the people she loved.
While Michael was Don Vito's favorite son, Sonny was his mother's.
Yes a good Sicilian wife knows her place and asks no questions about the business that leaves most of her family dead
Mama was mentally prepared for this situation she understood that success has enemies.
1:48 Sonny is telling Tessio without actually saying it that Clemenza is suspect and may be getting whacked very shortly. The unspoken message resonates loud and clear with an old hand like Tessio.
Look how Sonny takes a little comfort by making a drippy sandwich from the peppers Carmela was frying...
02:10 The fact he has to look up Luca Brasi's number (kept in a safe) shows that they rarely call the guy directly.

Another great Caan scene that was unfortunately cut. Also the kitchen - clean, organized, functional at any hour ...but no more than was needed. A reflection of Vito's empire.
I loved how Sonny sits on the other chair and calles Tessio. He respects his father by not sitting in his seat while hes alive and he earned his position as underboss
Why do these scenes get cut? They’re gold and add so much to already the best movie of all time
Because the movie was already nearly 3 hours without all these scenes. Coppola had to fight to keep plenty of the other scenes in. Movie theaters did not like to show movies that were this long, they would lose an entire show each day.
