Hey Marcel, I really enjoy your videos, but I’ve been downloading all of your libraries from Gumroad and there are a number of things that are adding a lot of extra work. As some others mentioned, the long file names are an issue in windows (the 256 character count includes the folders that sfx are in, it’s the full file path not just the file name), I would personally rather have most of that info in the description and a much simpler file name. Another issue is UCS requires underscores and in specific places and very specific capitalization to be recognized properly in Soundly. Using a comma after the CAT ID and sometimes inconsistent capitalization in your file names means I have to go back and rename every file to be UCS compliant. This is days, maybe weeks of work if I download all of your libraries. UCS format is CATID_fxname_creatorID_sourceID (source ID is the library name) so to be truly UCS compliant this example file should have been named “AMBSubn_Residential Neighborhood, Bird, Fountain, Calm Wind, Soft Rain, Background Traffic, Daytime, Kadikoy, Istanbul, Turkey, MKH 8040, Zoom F6, 19232_FTUS_Turkey Amb” but to avoid the file name limit I would personally go with something like, “AMBSubn_Residential Neighborhood, Kadikoy, Istanbul, Turkey, Daytime 01_FTUS_Turkey Amb”

Most of the time I add the spoken audio slate at the end of the recording rather than the beginning. I'm most often in a hurry to begin recording the subject so don't want to waste time. This is such a useful tip when you record a lot before getting round to editing.

This was a great one! Been recording for a bit and although I'm not selling any yet, it's super useful to know there is a standard organization and naming convention. I created my own system for now which took a long time to define, but I will change to the UCS soon! Thanks a lot for the awesome videos!

Thank You Marcel, This really helped. Before knowing this, I used to record sound and make a folder in a different way as the metadata. For instance if I recorded ambience sound in a particular cafe/restaurant, I would name a folder in the name of that cafe/restaurant and put my sound there. I have two recorders from Zoom (H6 and H1n), and they had their own folders. That meant going time and again to specific folders of the recorder and dumping my sounds. This helped to organise better. Thanks again.

Hi Ayan, Glad I could help with the video. I know we all create our own folder and structure system and you should do what works best for you but I do believe if you later try to sell your sounds, a universal specific category system is great.

This would be a great application for FileMaker. Store the audio and meta data in the same database. You can also maintain a table for the UCS list and make the fields in UCS pop-up menus. Wow. I might have to create this…

You are amazing, to share your learned info so freely, you are a treasure to UA-cam and the audio community. Question, of all the apps for sound editing, how did you land on Audition? What are its feature set that pulled you in? I am gathering my kit together and going to head out in a new side hustle in field recording after your videos feeling that I got this! Cheers.
I'm sure you got this Cory! Well, back in 2017 I started with Audition and always use it until today. For field recording editing its perfect for me. I always liked the design of it.
@@FreeToUseSounds I use the Notes app in iOS as well as desktop, you can share the notes to all devices so you can add info while in the field as well as pick them up when back in the studio. Just another tool to do the same thing as Pages. Cheers.
Ok, did my first recording today, outputted the file with metadata as you show, pretty slick. What does one do with the .pkf file that also is output from Audition? Is this used for anything? Is the large folder structure for the final .wav/metadat files for anything other than organization? Do you duplicate one for each recording trip, per month, year? Looking for some more info on the folders and how to use them in a workflow. Yippee, very excited to get this going.
@@CoryShubert Hi Cory! I delete the pkf file that comes with it. Also make sure you get rid of the "?" if that appears at the end of your files. The folder structure is for organization correct. I do duplicate the files on different hard drives and online cloud storage. If I loose the files or a hard drive stops working, I always have a backup.

Glad you are using UCS! And thanks for spreading the word. The only thing that I find strange is that your ambiences are in 192/32. Most of the time, 48/24 is just fine, in rare occasions 96/24 is necessary. Just my 2 cents.

True. I do take photos on the spot and it is possible to include the coordinates.
UCS is amazing, I use Reaper for audio ( I have just getting into location/field/production) and there is a useful plug that intergrates and will automaticaly edit the metadata for you and rewrite the track names for you ( based on your selections) I am really enjoying all your videos & sounds. You have introduced me to LOM products and I am waiting for them to come into stock. You both seem like wonderfull people. What's the plugin for Reaper?
I use Ableton as my main DAW, but really enjoyed Reapers configurability when looking into it. I was considering using Reaper for my field recordings, and Ableton for everything else.
UCS sounds amazing, pretty much a year ago I was looking into organisation for my recordings, but didn't find anything to my liking. This looks exactly like what I was looking for =)

Hi Marcel, why do you export the file after adding metadata to it in Adobe Audition, instead of just saving the original file with the new data and edits? Also, if exporting a second file is the best workflow, what do you do with your original sound file, because now you have two versions of the same sound (the original, and now the exported version with edits and metadata). Good tutorial and info...thanks.
Hi Scott! Thank you for asking. Because I always keep the original files untouched on a hard drive and another DP folder. After I export to a new file it is not the same file. Not in this example but if I edit other sounds, I cut the files, use different filters and manipulate the files so that I upload these recordings for my libraries.
If I would save the files, it would overwrite the original file. Sometimes I go back to the original file and cut out parts and use it for sound design or use other parts that I sell to other sound libraries. Always keep the original file because you never know if you need it someday.
Marcel, do you ever export short recordings from a long one? Like snipping out specific sounds from an ambient recording?
If so, do you do anything different when writing their filename / metadata?
Oh yes I do that do and put these files in a different category.
Thanks for another useful video Libby and Marcel! I'm just learning this system, but underscores "_" in file names seem significant and may be interpreted by databases or applications that understand UCS. So, again, if I understand correctly, an underscore after the Category and Subcategory would be important. AMBSubn_Residential neighbourhood, ... Please let me know if this is correct when you get a chance.
Also wondering of use of comma's might not be problematic if reading file names in comma separated value (.csv) files?

All cases. I never recorded that low because Im not the end user.
Soundly provides a function for naming the files with UCS standard. Its easier. Just sayin... and as far as what I learned from UCS, file names should be short and categoryid etc is separated by an underscore.. but thx for the insights tho!:)
Hi Pille! Thank you for watching and yes that’s correct. Soundly just enrolled this feature yesterday and I check it out for sure since I’m a Soundly user and provider. You can find me inside the Add On section. Since I use Bandcamp I can’t have the files in a much shorter form because BC erased the metadata description. Also I’m personally not a fan of using underscores.

Hi Tamas, we were discussing Soundminer with a friend who visited us today in Bangkok. I do not personally know Justin nor have I used Soundminer before. However, I am aware that our sound recordings have a metadata list available on the Soundminer platform for users to access.

Hi! I don't use Soundminer because of the Dongle. I use mainly Soundly.
@@FreeToUseSounds As my library grows, I started looking for a better way to manage and find the sounds I need. I am actually surprised someone has written an open-source product to do this. I have a problem with subscriptions for software I don't use everyday. :(
@@leelovetv I understand your point. If your library is not too big, you can use the free version. However, there is another free software available that can help you discover the right sound. I don't recall its name at the moment, but I'll try to remember it and let you know if it comes back to me.
@@FreeToUseSounds I will do some research and see what I can find. I am not opposed to paying for software, it is paying every month that bugs me. I believe this is part of the reason people are leaving Adobe for Blackmagic and Affinity products.

Ich mache schon seit 5 Jahren nebenbei immer mal wieder Field Recordings, welche ich aber bisher ausschließlich für meine eigenen Musikproduktionen benutzt habe.
Ich habe aber Bock das ganze auf ein neues Level zu heben und da kommt mir das Video hier gerade recht...
Ich habe aber eine Frage dazu: Wenn ich die Aufnahmen dann in die Ordnerstruktur einsortiere... Dann kann es ja so das nur in wenigen vereinzelten Ordnern überhaupt Files drin sind... Das wird dann ja bei so vielen Ordnern und Unterordnern zu einer Suche nach der Nadel im Heuhaufen... Also wenn ihr zu einem bestimmten Ort oder einer bestimmten Aufnahmetag ein Sound Pack macht... löscht ihr dann immer manuell alle Ordner in denen keine Files sind?
Freue mich darauf alle Videos auf dem Channel nachzuholen! Macht weiter so! Du bist super sympathisch!!!

Hallo Dennis! Super das Du uns gefunden hast. Richtig. Ich lösche die leeren Ordner normalerweise aber was ich nun in Zukunft mache ist das ich die UCS Liste auch als Ordner Referenz nehme und diese gar nicht mehr runterlade sondern einfach manuell erstelle und benenne. Da spart man sich die Arbeit mit dem löschen. :)

hmm all caps = unreadable ..., and long filenames ... well there is a cap of 255 characters on windows paths, so really not thought trough imo. short file names, with meta in the file should be the way to go or some database /excel with a hash...
Yes Windows has a character limit but you can shorten them with the good old Total Commander if needed. UCS is created by Tim Nielsen from Sky Walker Sound and many other high class sound designers. They know what they doing. Only the CAT ID is all caps and I have no problem reading these files in Soundly or Soundminer. Also, Soundly, Soundminer and Reaper already implemented UCS so I really don't understand what problem you have. If you don't use the file name for all tags and put these tags or keywords in the file description then you don't run into character limit issues.
@@FreeToUseSounds I must have misunderstood my apologies. If it is not common practice to use excessive long filenames with tags then yes. Ran into this issue the other day when downloading a large Library that half of the download was missing because it couldn't put it on disk. Had do do some python mojo to get it to work, really a waste of time. I wouldn't want this issue to get into a standardized system. Also clamping filenames is not good practice if you collab or merge libs, as this should be the strong point of this folder structure and would beat the purpose imo. ALL CAPS is good for titles that stand on there own, reading a file path straight on the explorer is already hard enough, getting all caps means more scrolling as they are larger and readability declines. Again If you use a program that makes it readable and it's a one time thing then yes fine, also from an IT point of view, I wouldn't recommend spaces in filenames, just my experience. I don't want to rant or anything, I think it's a good step in the right direction and love your content and effort for putting this out!
It's been awhile, but there is only one issue with your SFX libraries, too much words/letters in the filename!
So you cant import them into Soundminer properly... :/
BTW you can add your F6, mics, location etc, into metadata fields and not in the filename.

Hi! Oh yes that only happens if you are on Windows. The character limit ends at 250. If you shorten the files, they work again. Bandcamp also automatically added the library title in front of each file what makes the file longer. If I add the recorder, location within the metadata, this will be erased with Bandcamp. That is why I keep it in the filename.

@@foxaudiofr Yeah on Mac, you don't have this problem. If you want check out the good old Total Commander. With that program you can rename files in a breeze. :)
