Safe sailing.
Boat:
White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built.
The camera gear:
Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached.
Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v.
Underwater video Gopro3plus.
Editing:
Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff!
There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access.
Content:
I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining.
Comments and being at sea:
I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.

Never been in a boat before. But now i mastered all parts of the boat because of u. Your channel was educational
Thanks very much
I like Barry's videos.
He lives in the moment.
Thanks for another video. My husband was a very characterful single handed round the world cape horn sailor.
You look rather like him!
He was a bit mad and a great character and musician.
He lived for around 30 years on the black steel Junk, Roamer.
I miss him! A big adventurer , he didn't come back from his last winter passage between the Azores and Canaries at the age of 76.
It's great to again see the places where we used to sail delivering yachts.
Thanks again lisa burns ( liz maggs)
It broke my heart (occasionally) to sell my boat and end my life of full-time cruising. Now I'm 84 and our politics (USA) have made me dream of going back, even at this age. But you and your efforts have convinced me otherwise. You communicate REALITY more honestly than all the other You Tubers. Your achieving all this on your own is an amazing accomplishment. You are a real piece of work sir.
@Quat Sino Hate hearing that. Take good care.
@@BurrowDeeper Here's to you getting your pennies piled! I'm for glass as well, but you can't beat the safety of The White Shadow. All the best!
I catch a lot of grief from people because of my "unseaworthy plastic boat", but then I see all the pain and suffering you experience in the yards. Rust never sleeps. Godspeed Barry. :-)
yea, all boats need maintaining and all boats have compromises. It's just a matter of what suits you.
Na, your boat is great. Proven by your see passages. 👍🏻
Yea, when I see what he has to go through, I'm so happy with my plastic boat... ;-)
If I ever thought about getting a steel new boat, now it would be completely gone ! Fighting rust is permanent and desperate, sorry to say. Also getting the idea that this particular fight comes in addition to all the normal work you would face on a plastic boat... Barry is a very brave man for sure ! 😳
@@pierrevanderdeure8164 That is the problem with steel as material. It is extremely strong but it also corrodes. Fiberglass gets weaker overtime due to the sun and unlike wood or steel when it cracks your betted to lose alot more hull. However it takes a long time for a fiberglass boat to reach that point. Wood rots but that is preventable. And if it is rotted you can replace the section of planks. Wood also if not properly sealed against mariner borer's...well you'll have more holes than swiss cheese. there's a pro and con of material.
You have my utmost respect, Barry. Your adventurous spirit and work ethic make me wish I were you....sometimes! When you get old you are going to have enough great stories to tell that you’ll never have to buy your own pint again.
Cheer up old guy, not all is as bleak as it seems. Praise the fact that you are well and enjoying working on your boat. I can assure you that more than half of the world’s population envies you.
Rusty Shaddy high & dry
It could make a grown man cry
But not Barry he won't quit
Till his rusty boat is fit.
@@BurrowDeeper But Not Barry if a beer is to be had Barry will be GLAD!
Breakdown of a typical UA-cam video from a sailing channel:
4% : cooking/eating
14% : drinking
6% : sightseeing and scuba-diving
1% : sailing
75% : maintenance, spending and swearing
😄
Thanks for sharing your sweat and hard work on that amazing boat! She got you safely to your destination and now you are giving her the attention she deserves and she'll get you home once again. I honestly appreciate your filming while working AND editing. Take care of yourself!
I’m tired just watching you. The boat is looking good.
"One of the joggers has spontaneously exploded" 😂
Great Respect for you Barry! Don't despair... we love you and your videos! Keep up the tough, but much needed work!
Oh the joy of steel boats.
yea, all boats need maintaining and all boats have compromises. It's just a matter of what suits you.
"Spontaneously exploded" excellent :-)
Well Barry it's your fault I just spit my coffee out!! "Spontaneously exploded" and. "What's wrong with these people" Awesome lmao 👍
made my day :D
Yes, very Pythonesque! Love it!
Every time you said rust I took a shot of Tequila I think I am drunk Barry and it's only a minute since the video started ! lol !
You are a very courageous man. I know the feeling of working alone on a boat.
It looks an endless task but once it is done, the reward is immense.
You latest video reminds me to start to work on my boat.
Hope I will finish before you!
Adventures of an Old RustDog..... love you Barry. Good luck with the rust.
Never seen so many joggers congregate so closely 😂🤣. Love your fix-up video 👍⛵⛓️🔨
I’ve tried running and it makes me feel awful....priceless!
Just found your channel Barry and love it. Love sailing but have lost interest in the many many sailing channels with the pristine million $$$ boats, fake drama, soap TV rubbish. I only watch a couple now and this is the first one I have ever commented on. You are truly down to earth, modest and humble and it is what I would call 'real' viewing. Started a few days ago with your crossing the Pacific and it was sublime. The day to day challenges, emotion, guts, determination and humour were fantastic and as I said 'real'!
Was interesting to see your port hole repair as I recently replaced all four windows on my trailer sailer a few months ago as they were in a similar (or worse!) condition to yours.
I can relate to the emotions somewhat having done some solo challenges in a past life, the biggest of which was to cycle across Australia over 8 weeks, nothing like 71 days at sea but watching your videos certainly brought back vivid memories of some very tough physical and mental challenges and also the overwhelming feeling of joy to get through everything and make it! Keep up the good work mate.
Jason, New Zealand.
finally caught with your vids have been enjoying them over the last two years now i can comment in a relatively real time fashion keep up Barry your an inspiration to those of us who want to break free of conventional life an actually live.
You're a better man than I,
That is a lot of work refurbing all that rust. Love you man, keep at it, don't beat yourself to death !
❤️ From sunny Florida !
With your badly stained sern, try rubbing a half cut lemon. The juice bleaches the stain away. Works great.
That's a years worth of work for one man. Good luck.
Another fine episode in the life of the 'old seadog'..! Thanks for all the useful tips, and encouragement, for when I'm working on my own boat..!
2nd full watch for me Barry - can see your arms are the colour of rust - brilliant film maker, musician, sailor of course, and DiYer 😊 👍 👊 👌 🇬🇧
20:18: “Sometimes it just gets too much, just one person doing a boat like this.”
Ladies, don’t miss this subtle hint that the Sea Dog stud is available if you’ve got the right boat maintenance skills.
“Apart from the joggers, it is a nice morning.”
🤣🤣😂🤣😂🤣😭😭😭
Your rant about the " joggers " . . . . Priceless !!!! : )
As always, thanks for the ride, Skipper.
The sight of the old Morris Minor took me back to a night from school days, when my English class went to the theatre in central Washington DC for a showing of As You Like It. After the show we all piled into the teacher's car - all fourteen of us, three deep in every seat - and at the first traffic light, who pulled up around us but three police cars, one each side and one behind. How we got away with that I'll never know, but I'm sure we set an all time record for Morris Minor occupancy that night!
Hey, ol' Seadog... Hang-in-there -- you're doing a great job on the boat. Just stay in good spirits and take your time -- it will all come together in time. I am really enjoying your adventure and I admire your goal of sailing around the world. Remember to take some time off and enjoy youself... Thanks for sharing.
Glad to see shaddy is getting some love
Another great video Barry.
You certainly have your work cut out for you. Makes me glad my boat is fiberglass. When the work is finished she will be her glorious self again.
Best regards.
AL.
Dear Barry, looking at the "job to be done" on yr boat ...in yr age, alone...OMG! Take care dear Old Sea Dog. Fair Winds :-)
Haha killed me with the joggers
Thanks for the insight into the less glamorous parts of cruising life. Good luck with all your projects!
Nice to see your working hard Barry. I wouldn't have the energy. Look after yourself. Keep safe.
If it were me, at that age, I would fix that steel boat up perfectly and sell her quickly before one more bit of rust appeared. Then I'd buy a vintage plastic craft like what I have now and call it a day.
loved your comments about joggers, totally agree🤣🤣
Always look forward to your adventures Barry even on the hard in the yard. All the Best.
“Apart from the joggers, it is a nice morning.” Best laugh I’ve had in many days. LOL!
There's nowt like being stuck aground, in the cold and snow for making sailing-vids more interesting and I'm particularly enjoying the maintenance/repair films; the shittier the job, the better! Whenever I watch a vid at some point I get that 'look what I'm missing' feeling, but with these at least, rather than wanting to cry, I can instead smile, whilst thinking 'I remember doing that' and 'better Uncle Barry than me!' Get the cutlass bearing changed; I always hated doing that job!
😂😂😂😂 about joggers. Killed me 😂
His jogger comments had me in fits of laughter
Too funny!
U r terrible 😅 with the joggers. U made me crack up 🤣. On the other hand, I admire u and ur work ethic. Keep going Barry. U r the best
Working on boats , never ending .
The joggers rant was the best!
Wow that's a LOT of work for 1 person to tackle solo, my hats off to you. And you're right running on the street in combat boots when I was in the Army was what started my foot problems and now at 63 I wish I had not done that
Their all mad. Lol. You crack me up. Looking good barry. stay safe mate and no running! xx
You are a very resilient human being, indeed!!!
Zen and the art of boat maintenance.
The perfect Friday is cracking a beer open, relaxing into chair and tuning in to the latest episode of the adventures of an Old Sea Dog! Bliss :-)
I am sorry to see all those cracks on the deck being overlooked. The saying goes... Everywhere there is a crack their is underlying damage. As one old fart to another I feel your pain.
this video reminds me why I'll never buy a steel boat :)
I have to thank you Barry for sharing your life on YT, I’m up to date after 3 months of binge watching, thoroughly enjoyed every video. You’ve given me a much needed escape as you have many others. I hope you’ll have someone come by with labour and tools to help with the struggles of repairing Shaddy, I’d be there if/when your back in the U.K. as I’m sure others would. Please keep the videos comings im going cold turkey 👍👍
Gotta say that dropping by for a weekend of boatwork, beer and BBQ would be bang on. Barry, haul out in the UK next time and I'd bet there would be a few of us forming a working party...
Not surprised people were getting fed up with all the banging. Gotta be done Barry. Keep at it.
OH how I recognize the work on a steel boat, mine is also begging for some extra investment of my time. Thanks for showing the hard labour, that makes me feel better... ;-)
Best gut busting laugh of 2021 so far!! With you on the jogging.
Love your work, Barry! Rust, lycra and joggers ... otherwise, top form .... 🤣💥🤛🏽🍻 🏃♂️
Love your critique on the joggers. LOL 'can't be healthy for ya'
Great show, thanx Seadog.
The running🤣👍🇳🇴 stay safe;)
Way to go - impressive repair skills and cool seeing the boats issues out of the water.
A little know fact ... Joggers can spontaneously explode ! Thanks for that Barry. When you were doing this work, would you not have looked for volunteer helpers on fb, I'm sure people would be very happy to oblige if they knew about it ! Stay Safe & Fair Winds !!
The advantage of a steel boat comes into play when you hit something. Steel is strong, like the Old Sea Dog it just needs a little TLC.
I loved the part of the video at 13:40, the feeling you get when you look around and realize if you were a car, you'd be a collectable. 😎
Cheers from Juneau Alaska,
Greg Chaney
Why do I get the urge to fly out there and help you. Great stories mate.
I know, me too! Sorry Barry I'm in the wrong hemisphere.
joggers.......LoL stay safe, Tim & Cat
Love these repair videos...something very therapeutic about them.... could quite happily watch them for months!
Love ur explanation for jogging, honestly. 👍😂😂😂
What a battle just to carry on. You, sir, are a bad ass. Thanks for posting! Cheers!
Very interesting to see the maintenance involved in a sailing boat. Great video 👍 Happy sailings
I pray you win the lottery sir, You live a very interesting life. you create great videos from around the world. I wish I could buy you a new sailboat so you can enjoy your time sailing and not worrying about the decaying portions of the boat you currently own.
I enjoy the videos immensely I do worry about you though alone on the open seas in a leaky boat.
God Bless you and protect you on your journey !!! Good Luck Stay safe and keep on keeping on.
Keep the faith Barry, great work, she gonna look fantastic when finished. Don't knock the sunshine 😊, ice and snow on my boat as I try to do a few jobs inside.
Sometimes you just have to do it. Wishing you all the best Bazza.
the joggers... "what's wrong with these people?" LOL!!! Love the great laughter of the Old Seadog! And my goodness... so much rust!! Wish you all the best with the work!
Guess you'll be so happy when it's all done and Shaddy is back in the water :-)
mate you're in the hard yards now, but keep on. Once its done you'll have Shaddy like when you bought her. Been following you for a year and I may never get to do what you've done. You're a brave man. Chin up! What an experience.
Great to see all this Barry...especially since I'm in Taiwan and no chance of getting hauled into service! :) Just kidding, I fully appreciate the amount of work you are taking on and know you will knock it on its head in good time. There is something very satisfying in seeing a boat lovingly cared for and put back in the water.
Love watching the running repair vids please show us more, we acknowledge it's not all plain sailing you know! .Regards from old Blighty.
Hi Barry just binge watched all your videos over the last few weeks, really enjoyed your adventures and in total awe of your achievements, thank you for making winter lockdown in the UK bearable. Good luck with the refurb and hope you can get on your way again soon
Awesome, thank you!
You couldn't give me a steel or timber boat.... Well done Mate and Good Luck.
Favourite time of the fortnight again. Old man sailing as my 4 year old calls it. 👍
The joggers!! HAHAHA
Keep up the good work Barry!
Crazy joggers! If we were meant to run we’d have four legs.
Blues and beer is all the exercise i need!
The Rustinator 😁
You're doing a fine job. Those are a lot of hard itty bitty necessary tasks to get done. I like the DYI videos.
Well done Barry! Steady on.
great effort Barry, will be worth it 👍
Agree on jogging, now cycling, that's the way to exercise.
Bicycles are for children lol
Cycling with an electric motor so you get to the pub without sweating too much...
@@grabasalad5945 lol
Cycling for sure!!
Running is just too hard on the joints at mid/later life
It's easy to feel overwhelmed with all the projects, Just take them one at a time.
Believe me I know, restoring an old seabreeze to follow your lead. Enjoy your videos Barry.
Haha exploding jogger love it, so much work but Shaddy is worth it, she's got to get you home too so press on old sea dog.
I had the desire to come and give you a hand. You seem to be a very pleasant person to hang out with. My brother had a steel boat for some time and hauled it out a lot. Spent a lot of time chasing rust. When the opportunity came for me to buy a boat I went fiberglass. Admire your dedication. Well done.
God bless your fight with rust! My mountain cabin was much less work.🤗
Great channel - those joggers are probably a Saturday morning Parkrun - Parkrun was invented in England. Cheers
Well done Barry. Keep up the good work mate.
One of the possible titles for this film- "Why not to own a steel boat" :)
It only takes half a clue to own a steel boat, guess being clueless is just too embarrassing...???
Good luck with all the hard work
Full sisyphus mode. You have my admiration.
