I've been watching since you bought the boat and as much as I would lve to see you complete your round the world trip, I would much rather see you in good health. Watch yourself my friend.
Tough to be an Ole Seadog… USN and a Shellback here… I wish you a speedy recovery… hard to give up the Beer and the Rum…been a follower of your channel for awhile…
Captain Barry I have been following and admiring your exploits for years and was just released from the hospital suffering from the same malady, please don’t push it to hard, and give yourself time to heal properly….🤞🏻for a speedy recovery.
Hey Barry, my Dad got Cellulitis from a cut on his hand gardening, it attacked his knees, he became immobile, he fell getting himself off the toilet and bashed his hand, this became infected he was in North Devon District Hospital for three weeks he got Sepsis and Pneumonia. We managed to get him home last Tuesday and he Died on Saturday. The reason I said he died instead of passed away is that my Dad was police officer and he dealt with death many many and he would tell you that none of them passed away all of them Died. October Last year my Dad was play golf twice a week he was 81 and now he’s dead. Thank you for being my distraction….
Best wishes Barry, glad to see your up and about. You really appreciate the gift of movement when your mobility is in question. Speedy recovery Old Sea Dog.
Know exactly what it's like Barry. Three days in hospital on IV antibiotics. Getting on and off the boat a real mission. A month or so later skin is still flaking off. Most excruciating pain I have ever had. Speedy recovery mate.
OMG, my father had recurring cellulitis up to when he passed away a few years ago and he certainly struggled with depression because he was always laid up in bed and the pain was terrible. Your courage to continue to work on your boat with cellulitis is incredible. I am really not sure how you do it. Love your show. Remember without your health you have nothing. Maybe with all the sailing your body needed a rest.
A reminder to others sailing. Warm ,tropical places one needs to practice . Good wound care and hygiene are important for preventing many things . As the climate is just rite for bacteria. It never gets cold enough to kill them. Any little bump ,or scrape can cause an issue. Get well soon!
Sorry to hear what is happening to you, Barry. Word of caution. You are not supposed to mix alcohol and antibiotics. I learned that lesson about 30 years ago. It's a no, no! I hope you recover, man! ✌🏽
Certain anti biotics like Bactrin or Cefttaroline don't mix well with alcohol., which is the type of antibiotic used to combat a MRSA infection like Saedog stumbled upon.. You're also supposed to stay out of direct sunlight on those which is not easy when you're in Australia and on a boat.
My friend went thru this he was in his eighties. His leg survived this. But if you ignored it yes you will be in danger. You need to be careful. It comes and goes the rest of your life. Your health comes first.
After 35 years of professional drinking I finally had to give up alcohol 🥃, 3 years now without alcohol, 3 years without gout, cellulitis, lymphedema, hangovers.🎉
Just on the journey now.... Can't even have a few drinks without getting gout even with medication soooo out the door for the alcohol and looking forward to it 🎉🎉🎉
Lived close to a WestSail 32 plant once in early 70s on the waterway close to Wilmington NC . Everyone says your crazy, they were based in California . ⛵😁
Been there , done that! Once it’s in the system it can recur at any time! No more wearing shorts etc. Longs only. Don’t bump your legs if you can help it! Check yourself for scratches and apply a disinfecting agent immediately. I’ve had a recurrence five times and each time I’ve traced it back to a scratch, insect bite or similar! I carry dual antibiotics everywhere I go! Except this last time I was touring the UK from NZ and didn’t have them with me. We had just gone into Ireland when it reared its ugly head again. Luckily a doctor consented to see me immediately and gave me a prescription for powerful antibiotics. You need to get and keep them handy!
Your tenacity and calm in the face of such a malady is beyond admirable. Met a fella in the Caribbean with no legs sailing around the world back the 80’s. His boat was named Sea Legs. So no worries, either way you can still sail Shady! I’ll be praying you keep them both brother.
Glad you got through the rough patch. I've experienced cellulitis in my left leg. It doesn't take much to trigger it, a bruise, or an infected bug bite... especially at our age. Hope you're checking your blood sugar as well, for if you are hyperglycemic, the lymph system that normally drains excess fluid from the limbs can get stuffed up, making things worse. Best Wishes for a full recovery. - John
Barry, I had it on the side of my face and head, straight into the hospital, intravenous antibiotics for 4 days, nothing to mess with. I know your pain, God Bless.
Wow Barry you had a really horrible time. Glad you could have a little fun to help ease the pain of that darn infection. Best wishes mate and thanks for sharing!
I suggest avoiding anything alcoholic while recuperating from cellulitis. Alcohol will nullify the beneficial effects of the antibiotics on the infection, unless you don't mind more trips to the hospital, or having the leg lopped off for real.
Sore one with the foot, I had gout for a while on and off and that was a nightmare, glad to say all gone now, hope yours gets better as well fingers crossed.
I hope your leg is better now. It's a good thing you were on land and within reach of a hospital. I'm looking forward to watching your next videos and adventures.
Get well, please listen to all the well meant advice to rest and staff off it. If you don't give your body time to recover you will take longer to heal. Love watching your videos
Very good you did not lose your leg... My 'old' CPA (about our age) cleaned his bilge oneday and the next day flesh eating bacteria forced the clinic to remove his leg a few inches below the knee... now he has one of those spring prosthetics... Shaddy is looking good and so do your friends so looking forward to the next: Adventure...! Fair Winds...
Greetings n best wishes mate taking it easy is the order of the day Your picking up good for you ,the steel boat certainly keeps you busy chasing Mr rust from stem to stern niece to have friends arrive Cheers for now be well mate. Wattie Newton Maketu by the sea bop nz.
Barry, you’ve really been doing it tough! We were so sorry to watch you struggling and hope by now you’re feeling a bit better. We found Jimmy Buffet’s song “Bubbles Up” to be uplifting - hope you enjoy it if you get round to listening to it. All the best! Rod & Lillian
Sorry to hear about your cellulitis, Barry. My son had this problem when he was about 8. His was on his face, and they were very concerned that it was going to expand to the brain through the eye socket. He spent a week in the hospital on IV antibiotics, and, luckily, they were able to beat it back. Take care of yourself.
Loved this video. When I first saw you walking on both legs (when painting the chain) I teared up. I also felt so sad seeing you fall. I hope by now, everything is under control. By the way, anytime I see a Westsail 32, my heart skips a beat. What a beautiful vessel.
Barry, it's not a race. Take care of that leg. Though the pirate look might grab a few more subscribers, probably not worth it. Seriously, take care of yourself...Shady is looking good. Neptune and your adventures aren't going anywhere without you.
Had the same in my foot 35 years ago. You are VERY lucky. I had surgery to open and drain with betadine whirlpool therepy. Worse pain in my life ! Hospitalized for 5 days and took 6 months to get back to normal
Witch that I am I had a feeling something was wrong, Barry....and unfortunately I see that I was right. Will be praying for your complete recovery, Captn XO Darcee
Hello Barry. I sympathise with you suffering from cellulitis, as you have found out it is extremely painful, I have had it on and off for many years the problem is you only need to break the skin on your leg and it will be back, I usually have with me penicillin so I can take it as soon as the symptoms start. Wishing you all the best
Prop-speed is good. It wont stop stuff growing but it does not stick. Used to work on a large motor yacht and we started to use it around 20 years ago. I was the onboard diver and safety officer, it took about 15 hours diving to clean the props. They were 4.5 meter diameter 5 blade monsters.
I had that a few years ago, it was very painful. Barry you might have to go on the dry for a few weeks, that is like losing your best friend. Good luck Barry
Good to see you up and about. I was wondering why you hadn't put out any blogs. I've been following you for years now. We have an old fishing boat now in Bundaberg. It was called FISSION when we had it. Cheers Ian.
I wish you well Barry. Not that its going to make much of a difference. Hope you got a satisfactory recovery. Stay safe, and keep enjoying life. Best regards from Jarle
Glad you were in an Aussie port when your leg packed it in. something like that mid transit to a pacific island could easily have been the end of you, and we couldn't have that.
Just a tip for mastic once applied, spray bottle with water and some fairy liquid, spray on, will not stick to your fingers and you can work it much more easy. Hope your leg doesn't need cutting off, get well.
Happy your leg is doing better ! It not fun laying around waiting to heal , I've had 2 back surgeries LOL Great episode Barry looking forward to the next. Stay safe Buddy 🙏
"My friends already offered to saw my leg off... in return for beer." 😅🤣😂
Get well soon Barry.
Sending nothing but good wishes and good health

But, on the positive side, us cruisers have sky high Vitamin D levels, which keeps our immune system well maintained.
Tea tree, oil is very good for coral cuts
That and a small stock of antibiotics just in case.
You can't keep an old seadog down!
Alcohol makes antibiotics worthless. Get well soon. Love your video's.
Amen. I lost a friend who persisted in drinking while being treated for a blood infection caused by a brown recluse spider bite.

@@amtha9077 - You stated it a lot better than I... 👍🏽✌🏽
Having had cellulitis twice you have my utmost sympathy, it’s the only think that put me off work for two weeks.
Keep it elevated.
Speedy recovery.
