I'm of course, very impressed by the pianist. But I'm also impressed with whoever tuned the piano to make it out-of-tune just enough to sound like it'd been not tuned for a while, but still basically musically sound. I doubt that's easy.
Good point, Jim! As a former piano tuner, I think it's mostly Hollywood magic. The temperament on the piano from the audio is good, and purposefully so. You have a good ear, and you're right! The unisons are slightly de-tuned to make it realistic. That wouldn't be hard for a tuner. But, had the tuner made the temperament out of tune even slightly, it would've been a challenge to not fight what they hear, and I think it would've made the piano sound worse than they would've liked. I'm sure they wanted it to sound beautiful enough to capture the humanity without wrecking the scene. To be realistic, the piano wouldn't have been tuned in months. The freezing room would've caused the wood on the piano to contract causing the wires to contract and deviate from its standard tuning so far that even a monotone would hear it. The character's performance would have been played imperfectly because no one of any caliber can play that without warming up, and with freezing fingers. Hollywood magic. We just have to consider the essence of what's being presented in the scene without the need to be too realistic. :)
With a large enough movie budget you could just purchase a piano, put it in an apartment/house like this one, start a world war and genocide and allow time to take its toll on the piano ever so slightly.
I both agree and disagree with this comment. The piano may be out of tune on purpose, but I think they did it to make it sound like a piano made in the early 20th century. You know, the piano didn't always sound as smooth as it does today.
To me, this is by far the best scene in the whole film. To see the German officer being so moved by Szpilman's out-of-this-world piano skills gives me goosebumps. Everything that lies behind is so meaningful: not only do you get the obvious sympathy for Szpilman and his horrible situation, being under circumstances that are so strange for an accomplished musician that used to live a comfortable life; you also feel unexpectedly sympathetic towards a Nazi officer (yes! A Nazi officer indeed!) because you get to see that, after all, he's also human. You get a little hope, despite everything that was going on during those very dark times, that in the end, there is something good inside all of us that can be sparked by, in this case, music, which is, as this scene shows, a universal language that can transcend every conceivable boundary. A true masterpiece.

I so dislike my German country. For the part they played in the Human History of the World. Shalom Shalachem Brothers and Sisters. And those who deny this history including our 45th. Have no idea what they are talking off. I miss my friend Ellie Wiesel.
Please do not dislike your country. Yes, what happened was horrible. It’s important to remember you can’t be held accountable for Germany’s past history. But you can learn from it and make sure it does not happen again. My ancestors owned slaves and I am absolutely ashamed of that part of my family’s history. So I make sure I do not judge people by the color of their skin. I hope in my small way that I can make up for the sins of my ancestors.
Oh and the propaganda taught to you your cultural marxist schools has made you a history expert? Likely not given the very stupid first statement you wrote. Ask yourself this: who does it service to hold Germany done by making it''s people guilty for eternity? Why is it that basic facts can't be disputed about that time? Who doesn't let you questions them? If those questions gave answers different than what you've been told, what happens next? Don't be stupid your whole life Angelika. Those German soldiers were trying to save you from the barbarians at the gate and all you can do is live off of government benefits and complain.
@@mocuishle1028 Exactly. All this generational blaming has gone way too far. A person living now is not responsible for what their ancestors did/did not do. God does not judge people like this so neither should we.
@Angelika Bertrand I lived in your country for 10 years. I have never expected Germans to learn from history to that extent as I saw... People were absolutely embarrassed to speak about history. @@GnomicMaster we know that too. In general you right, but that particular man was a good man.
One of my favorite movie. He is such a beautyfull man, the sincerety through his eyes. So fragile and strong. In the Light rises hope in humanity when fly the notes breaking the cold and make explode the precious of life facing death in the emptiness of the mad powers. As Angel kills In a peacefull fights the Evil
"I am...
... I was a pianist."
Highly recommend this movie. Adrien Brody is brilliant!
if you saw the movie and know the story about Wladyslaw Szpilman during the WW2 this will be very touching
Fantastic! I put part of this in a short I did.
This clip would’ve been better if it included the pianist getting discovered and the German officer telling him to play it. Thanks for the upload!
This reminds me of the Japanese proverb, “芸は身を助く”, which means “Art brings bread.”
Favourite scene
Felt responsible. I found little reminders of Jewish history on the streets, galleries, pathwalks, buildings. Schools visit c.camps. Exemplary! I was actually proud of you, well done! I like germans a lot, literally loove your language and certailny loove your mentality! You have every right to be a proud German! (in a good way,of course😉)
I remember that scene from 20 years ago. For some reason I didn't remember which piece was played, which I should have. The improbable thing is that the piano was not years out of tune and the sound is well engineered.
There are cut and paste on score obviously for film timing
It is strange that even in artistworld many became dying sick,or adodoty like Chopin, when Rubinstein, he lived
❤Chopin❤
That Coda 😮
Actor very good in this. And in Peaky Blinders…🍻🎶
