Since u like old buildings, u shld go to Jalan Conlay, Jalan Eaton area(near Jln Ampang /Pavilion). I used to stay in d government quarters in Jln Conlay, opposite d MISC's building. Wat it has taught me is dat, yes, it's nice to stay in big houses like dat, but u'll hav to contend with spirits living in d area and d house u live in!! My siblings and I have experienced lots of such 'spiritual disturbances ' since my dad, being a govt servant used to stay in such 'mansions'!! I'm now happily staying in d suburbs, double storey terrace house of my own, thank you!!

Really enjoyed your video today ...reminded me of my late dad who would take us for a drive around the neighbourhood to look at people's big houses. Over the 'oooohs and aaaaahhhs', he would say - "if you want houses like those, study hard, work hard and get rich." Did the first two but the last one was a bit tough hehe....Looking forward to your next video 👌

    hey Andrew!
I have been watching your vlogs on and off from Canada,, originally I am from Kuala Lumpur but moved to Canada 20 plus years ago.
I have watched this video a few month back .
Recently, my partner and I visited KL for CNY, I managed to meet up with a few friends and realized that the last house featured in this video was my friend's place.
I was inside the house, I have to say, the house has modern interior with a pool, the house shaped like an "U" with the pool in the middle. My friend did mentioned you featured her gate and instantly I remembered your video and mentioned your name, she was surprised because I watched your vlogs and did say that I like the gate.
    what a small world eh!

Ow..this brings me back to my younger days in late 70s and 80s. I used to walk to school at Ampang area (near Hock Choon hint hint). My family and I used to stroll along Ampang, U-thant areas (as well as Bangsar) just to look at the houses. I remember Istana Sharif Ali and the Soviet Union's embassy along Jalan Ampang too. Memories. Thanks Andrew.

Hi Taylor. The old colonial houses featured in this video are called 'Black and White' houses. The design, sometimes referred to as Tudorbethan Style, combines tropical and art deco elements while standing off the ground to enable the flow of cooling breezes and inhibit termites. They are almost always on a hill to avoid bad air (mal-aria). A bit of an architectural joke when they were built. Today, they are some of the most desirable and expensive houses in the world. Pop down to Singapore and you will see what I mean.

  • @airamona

I remember from years ago, that pseudo French style house was featured on the cover of 'Anjung Seri', a famous locally published interior design magazine in Malaysia back then (it cease publication in 2015). My mum was an avid reader of that magazine. I remember being awestruck by it back then cause it reminds me of Disney castle, with it's huge size, conical roof, tower like structure, half-moon shaped windows, the lake front. If I remember correctly, it was a private property, used as an orphanage/shelter home. Don't know what is the status of the building nowadays.

Andrew, just where you are residing now you can go to further up the road turn left there is TAMAN TAR. A golf course in front. Explore further n there is UKA Y HEIGHTS. During the 90 s many expats stayed at Ukay Heights because of the American School.Explore Ukay Heights ( Chong Khoon Lin 6 areas) I live in this areas before.
Two kilometres up the highway, up the hill are many, many houses you can explore. You can easily go to town within 10 to 15 minutes (if no jam). Why live in a Condominium where you can get a bungalow with bigger space.

Some of the sad scene of abundant houses you see here also exit in other areas like Damansara Heights and Petaling Jaya. The original owners probably have passed away and their children have migrated and settle down overseas. Some of the lease have expired, but if renewed or a freehold and all the government rent and taxes have been paid, nobody else can occupy it. You can see a similar situation in other towns like Melaka, Ipoh, Taiping and George Town. Singapore also had a lot in the past but most of it was acquired by the goverment and demolished. I have seen similar areas in Jakarta and Vientiane Laos. Simply beautiful.

Most of my friends and family got through the storm just fine. Sadly, one friend in Naples, Florida pretty much lost his whole house. He had just moved in a week before. So sad. 😞

Hi Andrew - I elected not to up or downvote this video. I appreciate your videos. However, it would have been far more helpful for those of us outside of Malaysia if you showed us properties for sale and their prices, or recently sold properties and what they sold for.

If you are alone it's better to live in an apartment. For safety and not much work to do .

The New Zealand, Australian an U.K servicemen and families enjoyed living in Singaporean government black and White houses with lots of land that required A Kebun or gardener to maintain. I loved that house.
