    YESS Julian!! These tips are so helpful for students who are in year 12! You were definitely someone I relied on for any help and guidance throughout years 9-12! So glad to see you helping others! Good luck with everything!

    Just two things:
    1. michael is not real
    2. For those wanting to learn more about 'Deep Work', I really recommend reading Cal Newport's book on this topic since this is the most important fundamental (all the other techniques rely on deep work to be effective)
    All the best!

    Very helpful video man, studying has always been a problem with me.
    Is it better to immediately study ~1 hour as soon as you get home, or spend some time eating, showering, exercise ect, then studying later at night?
    Thanks

    • @JLTutoring
      @JLTutoring  2 роки тому +9

      So the short answer is it depends on you as an individual (and yes I know its generic, but let me offer my own 2 cents :)
      For me on a typical day, when I first get home I am usually quite tired so I usually eat / shower etc, so resting is fine. IF you are planning to study later, the only thing I would avoid is any sort of things like being on your phone, video games, watching movies etc (it is better to do these things AFTER you study because I think we all know what it's like after playing games or watching a movie :) Then I would study for ~1 hr, then a break / exercise, and then followed by either relaxation or you can choose to pump out another study session depending on how busy you are. So overall timeline for me looked like this
      3:30 - School ends
      4:30 - Get home (yes it took me 1hr to get home)
      4:30 - 4:40 - Rest for 10 minutes (eat / shower) ***you may like to exercise before studying, which is another possible option
      4:40 - 5:40 - 1hr study (approximate time)
      5:40 - 7:00 - break (can include exercise, dinner, wash up etc)
      7:00 - 8:00 - optional study session (during the start of a term I usually did not study, but when there are a lot of SACs during those peak times, this became another study block)
      8:00 onwards - relax do whatever, I tried to sleep before 10:30 (because i needed to wake up at 6:30 to get to school which takes 1hr for me)
      Extra notes: to answer the rest of your questions
      - I know some people have exercise commitments for school and that is completely fine just mix around the study blocks. For example, I used to have cross-country training every Thursday so I would get home later - in that case, I might just do one study session and call it a day
      - *** If you feel tired after school which I certainly did, exercise really helped me on those days (running, gym etc) - if I did feel extremely tired I would exercise for 30min - 1hr after I get home then study for 1hr (but if you feel fine then you can take a short 10min break as shown above then study 1hr, and then exercise)
      - I would generally avoid studying too late into the night past 10pm - yes it might be necessary sometimes, but the ability to focus becomes harder and harder the later it becomes. So I always thought of it as 1hr of study before 10pm is like doing 2hrs of study past 10pm (obviously not exact numbers but the point still remains)
      FINAL TIP: Consistency is always the key, regardless of when you study, doing so for most of the days is always the recipe for success (it doesn't have to be every single day since life does happens :)) So the times that I listed above were only my IDEAL plan, not going to lie, not every day went like that. Sometimes I felt burnt out, stressed etc, but sticking to it 70-80% of the time was enough for me to feel confident in my ability.
      Hope this helps :)

    I’m in year 8 right now, and while I understand I shouldn’t be stressing out about ATARs at the moment, do you have any tips to build these kinds of habits in the long run? (possibly over the course of 4 years)

    • @JLTutoring
      @JLTutoring  Рік тому

      Hey, good on you for think ahead, a lot of the habits are best built over the years. As mentioned in this video, it is a good idea to start working on some form of these habits gradually and slowly. For example, aiming for 1hr of focused work for each day (perhaps excluding weekends) would serve as a great foundation for the future, as well as trialing out different note-taking techniques to find the one that suits you the most. I actually took notes in many different ways, and the final form was the one shared in this video. Now that might not be what works for you, however, you can start by using the format I've shared in my videos as a starting point, add what's useful and remove what is not. So overall, work on establishing the habit of working at least 1hr a day as well as trailing out different methods to take notes and learn.
      Hope this helps, and wish you all the best with your VCE journey

    I have 4 weeks left till my trials. I know very little to nothing about any of my subjects. Do I even have a chance or should I just give up. What’s ur advice bro I regret so much

    • @JLTutoring
      @JLTutoring  2 роки тому +3

      It is definitely possible, I know a lot of people who made the most of the final weeks leading up to the exam and saw incredible improvements and ended up doing very well. So the first tip is a mindset thing - which is to know that it is possible to still do well :)
      Second I would try and plan out how you will use the rest of your time - so a study timetable is nice since you can map out roughly what you can study each day to be the most prepared you can before the trials. In terms of how you can approach studying, if you don't remember the content then it is a good idea to either review your notes or watch a quick youtube video, then try a few practice questions if applicable just to solidify your understanding. There is something called the 80/20 rule which means that 80% of your results come from 20% of your efforts.
      Now as mentioned in my video, it is important to maintain a high level of focus during your study sessions (I like listening to non-lyrical music) because this can compensate for the less time. Also don't feel like you need to perfect everything before your trial exams, I know that I didn't do that much revision because I used my trials more as gaining exam experience :)
      All the best!
