It’s My Dream To Own an MV Agusta F4R

  • Here is my thorough review of the 2012 MV Agusta F4R. A classic bike that has aged like fine wine.
    In the commuter category,
    - The bike’s riding position is aggressive. Your feet are positioned way to the back and if you are planning on riding for prolonged periods of time, be ready to pull over frequently to stretch. The F4R earns a 3 out of 10.
    - The fuel tank is big, holding roughly 4.5 gallons of gas which is typical of a liter bike. The bike also has a fuel gauge showing you how much fuel is left which is a nice feature for street riding. The fuel consumption per MV Agusta’s official website is around 35 mpg which is average for a liter bike earning the F4 a 5 out of 10.
    - As far as commute-specific tech goes, the F4R has no cruise control, no on-the-fly suspension adjustments, no smart headlights, no anti-wheelie, no fly-by-wire and power level selections, in fact no electronics of any type. It’s just you and the raw power of the motorcycle. There are not even RIDING MODES available to pick from. If you are riding and the weather turns, there is no option to change to rain mode, or if you change riding style from urban to freeway, there are no options to go through. All you can do is to pick from 8 levels of traction control sensitivity. This Earns the F4R a 2 out of 10.
    - Storage is limited to under the passenger seat and even that is taken up by the tool box. Anything larger than a soda can, you have to bring along your backpack earning the F4R a 3 out of 10.
    - A good commuter bike should be cost-effective, reliable, and have a strong dealership network. The F4R is an expensive bike that was around $20K brand new back in 2012, and suffers from a notorious lack of reliability with very few dealerships in the United States. Combine that with the fact that it is entirely discontinued and that it will be very difficult to source parts, to realize this bike should not even remotely be considered a good commute bike. This earns the F4R a 2 out of 10.
For a total of 15 out of 50 points for the commuter category.
    In the Performance/Dope Factor Category
    - The F4R’s tall and aggressive seating style now becomes an advantage helping you get in and out of corners more easily, and to ride at high speeds without getting bothered by the wind hitting you in the face earning it a 7 out of 10. Motorcycles with a more tucked in position score higher here.
    - The horsepower/torque figures are very healthy at around 185 HP stock with a high 85 ft.Lbs of torque. Not the fastest bike by modern standards, but definitely on-par with its top performing rivals earning the F4R a 9 out of 10.
    - At 430 lbs, the F4R is considered average for a liter bike. To compare this bike with its rivals the 2012 Ducati 1198 at around 370 lbs, and the 2012 Aprilia RSV4 at around 460 lbs, we are sitting almost at the average weight between them earning the F4R a 5 out of 10.
    - Regarding the race-track oriented rider aid’s technologies, the F4R is literally equipped with nothing other than a configurable traction control. It’s just you and the analog and raw power of this motorcycle on the racetrack earning it a 2 out of 10. Although the F4 scores low, but I suspect a lot of people would prefer this rawness over motorcycles that are loaded with assisting features and power-levels that you can choose from. But in my opinion, it is better to have rider aid’s features and not use them if you don’t want to, than to not have anything at all.
    - As for the F4Rs design choices and marketplace, it is probably the most attractive motorcycle I have come across with its single-sided swingarm, the classic red and silver paint combo, and most importantly, the beautiful undertail quad-exhaust. At the price of $20,000 brand new it is definitely considered a higher end motorcycle and combined with the fact that it is a desired Italian bike that is discontinued, I suspect the prices of cleaner specimen like this one would continue to climb. Resale values hold very well and as more collectors begin to look for this model, you will soon see used prices listed for much higher than the MSRP back in 2012. This earns the F4R a 9 out of 10.
For a total score of 32 out of 50 in the Performance/Dope Factor Category.
The F4R is a very attractive and fast bike that defined a new era for MV Agusta. Some consider this bike to be the savior of this brand and the very motorcycle that guaranteed MV Agusta would exist today. If you own this bike, consider yourself very lucky. You should stop riding it, drain all the fluids out of it, and park it in your living room and cherish it for years to come. Because if anything goes wrong with this bike, you will probably never be able to get your hands on a spare part ever again.

    Mate, are you for real?
The F4 is one hell of a bike for quick B road riding and is a total weapon on the road. How on earth can you say drain the oil and keep it in your lounge to look at! Yes, it’s drop dead gorgeous but they love to be ridden and fast. It’s not a commuter so why even try and score is as a commuter, totally not relevant.
This bike continues to put the biggest grin on my face with each ride. Parts are nowhere near as hard to obtain even with a limited dealer network even here in the UK.
Just get out, ride it and enjoy it mate, that’s what it was built for!

I so agree with you, drain the oil and park it? What??
It's like having a super model girlfriend but only go with her to bush walks so nobody can see them, and only playing cards and having book readings with her then going to sleep in clothes in different beds 🤣🤣

This is a beautiful looking bike and knocks any modern bike out of park! Unfortunately MV has always had a reputation for poor reliability but this work of art needs to be parked in your living room and admired as you recommend.

I bought an MV in 2016. 40000km later the only issue I can recall is a bad temp sensor. Very reliable if maintained properly.

If you think this sounds good with a cat on the exhaust you should try the f4 750 no cats not traction control, sounds amazing and the yellow analog tacho looks much better the the digital unit and the 750 has enough power for the road. As for the reliability, I have only had one issue in 17 years of owning and riding them. Nice review Sir.

What a sad thing to end on; "Don't ever ride it again, because you'll never be able to get your hands on a spare part again.".
I completely get it of course. It's just sad to have something so desireable and not being able to use it for what it's designed for...!

Initially F4 750s, and F4 1000S and Tamburini up to 2006 were all equipped with axial front and rear nissin calipers. In 2006 there was the entrance of the F4 1000R with radial brembo brakes.
I personnally ride a 1000S (2006) with 6 pistons on each front caliper and 4 pistons on the rear one.
Regarding the brake power, the front is fairly good. But you have to pull hard on the lever to brake hard... I don't know if swapping the front master cylinder could change something... Anyway, I got used to it.
Concerning the rear brake, it does the job really well ! Even better than a Ducati 998 from the same aera or Panigale 1299 in my opinion ! Do not pull hard on the rear brake when pulling hard on the front brake otherwise I'll feel the rear end of the bike "drifting".
And for me the riding position is perfect for me. Much better than the Ducati 998. I did a 2.000km roadtrip with the bike (with fuel tank bag and backpack). I wasn't suffering during the ride. But yeah a bit of stretch is necessary after it.
"Drain all fluids and store it" You're crazy man ! I don''t want to ride anything else than my F4 or my Ducati 998. What I do hate about collector bike owners it's the fact they don't have to enough courage to ride it ! You'll expose the bike in your showroom once the engine is dead ! Not before !
These bikes shine on mountain pass once the suspensions are perfectly set for the rider and you learnt how to use the throttle and the chassis
Why complaining about a bike that doesn't have ride assist ? With a progressive learning curve of discovering the bike it's better than being fustrated by onboard electronics that will you make feel nothing... It's made for beginners (+200HP bikes with electronics won't be better than -200HP bikes with no electronics in terms of feeling)

It was always going to be a tough gig restyling a masterpiece. Unfortunately I still prefer Tamburini's original creation. I don't like the Bip on the F4 , should be mono. Also the paint work and styling is just not good enough.

    • @emadreviews
      @emadreviews  8 місяців тому

Agreed. But I’m glad they stayed as true as they could to his design rather than going full Japanese or whatnot. I have a 2010 MV Agusta Brutale 990R video coming up which is also an evolution on Tamburini’s design. Highly collectible !!! Yes, great bike to ride and does all well; BUT with its discontinuance, it instantly became highly collectible and prices will grow by leaps and bounds. MV F series are limited production and , if made in 2024 would top $32,000. Buy all you can and hold......
