Considering the game takes place in L.A. you could say the annoying dialogue was intentionally made to be cringe so that it properly reflected the average IQ of people who live there.

The procedural damage system they invented for this game is absolutely next gen. Damage states (as it's being called in a game development) are a huge pain in the arse: You can either just splat some blood decals on a model of a damaged enemy, which is pretty easy and cheap, but not very realistic (most games do damage states this way) or you need to create several models for each enemy type and each damage state, which is very time consuming. The concept of having realistic damage states without huge amount of work is very novel, actually.

    • @pdude83
      @pdude83 9 місяців тому +4

If i remeber right the damage system is called F.L.E.S.H. and yes its pretty impressive. Dambuster developed it already before they worked on Dead Island 2.
You can do it with one model.
That model needs the damaged parts modeled below the outer visible model.
Then you group parts of the model, fex the head, arms and legs.
Getting the hit position could be done by checking the vertexnr or bone near the hit pos.
Then you "mask"(=make it invisible) the predefned limp/part-groups and create a head, arm or leg model at the bone position of the hit part and give it some "flying physic" or "bounce-script".
This way it looks like you shot of a limp from the model.
With such a masking system you get a pretty good looking gore system with one model per enemy.
( edit: Soldier of Fortune 2 used this technique with their own [if i remeber right] Ghoul2 model format. Another example for this is the stomache wound of the fat Zombie in Doom 3. Left4Dead also used some kind of decal-gore-shader, a very good way for impact visuals. edit end )
I have done this in my beta version of my free zombie shooter Dead Taste. But because of memory usage (using a old a* engine) i went back to dismemberment of heads only (also done with one single model). Just wanted to point out no need for different models.
      Btw.
Different models would only work for one dismemberment. Imagine you shoot the head, then a leg. This wont work with damage models...except you created one for every possible dismemberment combination. And thinking of memory usage, damage models are not really the way to go, besides the time consuming thing you already mentioned.
My guess is FLESH uses a combination of masking and some kind of decal-shader. Very intresting stuff indeed.
But yes damage systems are always a lot of work, no matter what kind of engine is used.

My only gripe about the old game was the fact that it sometimes felt like a nightmare with regard to the hit detection or damage. You'd hit a zombie in the face with a lead pipe and the zombie would cough politely and fart a little before walking along like nothing happened. The lead pipe would evaporate in your hands after a few more useless slaps.

There's a subtle layer to the weapon upgrades that the video was kinda wrong on. There are often advantages to getting new weapons at your current level. Look closely at the stats of weapons you upgrade vs weapons that drop at your current level. You will find that upgrades don't always mean a knuckle duster will match one dropped at your level. In fact they usually fall a bit lower on damage by maybe 50 - 100 points or more. Upgrade is a good thing but by the time you hit lvl cap you're probably gonna be inundated in max lvl weapon drops. I found myself replacing everything that I had been upgrading prior to that point just to get the highest dmg weapons possible. The one exception was the Hunting Rifle Peggy. That thing turns into a beast by cap. no other weapon hits a dmg rating of 4500. The melee legendaries hit around 2500. What this means is on crits with peggy you can do 14k shots. The legendary weapons can hit around 8k or so. Its odd though because legendary weapons do not randomly generate in Dead Island 2.

Took a little getting used to, because the camera would lock onto the limb you aimed at, but it was extremely satisfying to pull of percise dismemberments or breaking arms etc. You could really manipulate the animations and that made the combat extremely replayable. So I can understand that if you don't even have more than two attack buttons, the combat might feel stale in DI2 at some point. Even if the gore system looks as good as it does.

I gotta say, the fact that it feels like an older game is a major plus for me. I hate deckbuilding in any game and the price should be cut in half, but other than that, it looks fantastic! This is coming from somebody who played the crap outta Dead Island and Riptide, so the familiarity is delightful :3
Anything that brings me back to the feel of 6th and 7th-gen console games is automatically gonna catch my attention (like Evil West or most of the more recently remakes like DAH and SpongeBob: BfBB, haha). Yes, my opinion is certainly skewed by these rose-tinted goggles, but I’m not blinded by them. Most people today will probably say that most modern games just suck compared to the simpler times that this game harkens from, and that’s a sentiment that I can get behind!
For instance, moving throwables to a cooldown system instead of having to find or craft them individually is a good bit of streamlining that I’m completely in favor of! Just an extra injection of arcade gaminess here and there, as constant micromanagement and fiddling with menus is just so unappealing. Anything that cuts down on that is more than welcome.
Your comment about not settling for mediocrity is certainly fair and agreeable, but… You can’t really have gone into this expecting to be blown away. A sub-AAA studio making a sub-AAA game is par for the course. Again, they really should’ve priced it more appropriately, but if you buy it on a deep sale (something a reviewer isn’t expected to wait for, to be fair), I’d say it looks like good value and good fun :3

Haha, as a single person, I can really only speak for myself. I assume you're just one person as well, so as separate people, we likely have different situations going on. Differing opinions, y'know. Dead Island 1 was priced as a budget game, and it lived up to that quite well! G-man up there seemed a tad harsh on this game, and the main reason I can see for that is that it costs as much as a full AAA game. If they want people to pay that much, it may as well be judged to the same standards, right?
But it just wasn't going to meet those same standards. So logically, seeing as it's not a flagship sort of gaming experience, it shouldn't be priced like one. But you pay all that up front and justify the cost to yourself afterward. You're your own person.

@@Toby_Kat the base price is 70 as with most modern triple a games, not our fault you wait for every game on a sale.

Ur spot on man, 7th gen was way better for sure too, devs had way more passion for the games they created back then, it shows going back and playing some of them which I still do. And ur spot on about crafting, its the single reason I could never get into any of the Far Cry games..90% of the gameplay consists of collecting crafting items in which you then have to merge in a very poorly designed UI menu specifically for crafting and you'll be in thus menu all fkng game making useless shit. It kills the flow of the game and takes me out completely. I always thought the far cry formula is a very cheap, played out, and its like they think theyre shit smells better than it really does cuz they never seem to switch the formula even once. So yeah Im excited asf for DI2, it doesnt look boring asf.

That zombies arm at 20:26 was wild. Would play this just for the gore effects alone.

I actually think the "warcry" is a leftover from when Techland was working on it. There's a similar implementation for it in both Dead Island 1 and Dying Light 1 called "man-up"

The PC version of Dead Island 1 had interesting stuff in it, including some debug options. From Wiki:
'"Gender Wars", an unlockable skill for the playable character Purna which increases her combat damage against male opponents, was referred to during development as "Feminist Whore". Although changed throughout the game before release, the original name could still be found in debug code on the PC version. Publisher Deep Silver described the line in question as a "private joke" made by one of the developers, and regretted its appearance in the final product.'

I am a huge fan of dead island and riptide, and this game feels more of the same which is what us Dead Island fans wanted. The big issue for me is the epic games store exclusivity deal so I will either be waiting for this on steam or getting it on console. It doesn't seem worth 70$ at all.

I'm confused by your statement that no one is playing this, when it's sold 1 million copies in less than three days.

I probably just have a skill issue but I thought that special infected like the Slobbers and Screamers brought some real challenge to encounters. If I saw either I knew I'd have to ignore the fodder zombies and charge straight for them, cause if I didn't they would seriously mess me up with caustic artillery or crippling screams that summon more and more zombies. I always saw the normal zombies as being more fodder to enhance the effectiveness of the special infected that will be the real threat during any combat encounter. And personally I think they did it very well.

For all those zombies just whip out a ranged weapon like Peggy with the mutalator mod on it to dismember limbs. Then shoot the legs or arms on tough enemies. Limb shots are auto crits and that rifle that you get from a sidequest becomes a beast by endgame if you upgrade it to lvl cap. You can two shot crushers by plinking their legs. It two shots most baddies due to it getting crits around 14k or so constantly.

Why do I feel like this game is nothing like the original idea that they had for it
