- Just a short video for those “DIY” guys on UA-cam who are here to look up informative videos! Because yea that’s a thing on UA-cam that still exist! And if I can contribute to that then awesome! Hope it works for you if you have this problem, and don’t forget it may take a couple good hard closes to get it freed up and working properly. Since I made this video I have had absolutely no more problems from the doors!

For anyone with a 2nd gen, so the gen before this one: the doors are supposed to set off the door chime. If they don't chime when you open them, that means the sensor thinks it was never closed to begin with. That's the one with the problem, tends to usually be the lift gate or the lift gate glass.
I had to remind myself that a 2003 is still 17 years old. Lol I was thinking that a 2003 wasn't that hold it till it hit me
Feels like it was just yesterday still
Mom bought one of these new back in the day. But with the v8 and 4x4 it was loaded up. And it’s crazy to drive this one and remember riding in the back. Thinking about how long ago that was
Yup, that comes to all of us. To me a 2003 vehicle really isn't all that old...
@@gosportjamie Same
i feel bad for the people who financed these shitty explorers in the early to mid 2000s
Dude bless you! You saves me so much time. I almost took the doors apart until i ran into your video! Wish i could give you a million likes. Thanks again
I have a 1997 Eddie Bauer explorer... Both back doors won't open( bought it this way)
The man I got this from totally took advantage of me being single .
How do I open these doors?
The door panels are off.
But now my back hatch glass wont open....that's what I was looking for when I saw this video... I sure would like to drive without my door being ajar!
Thank you for your knowledge 😁
I have the same exact vehicle. The same problems occurred when I took the car over from my father and i ended up fixing it by spraying everything with lubricant, and forcing the doors open if they wouldn’t open, now they all work brand new
I love the explorers!
I’m a fan myself, I just don’t particularly care for this engine/trans option it has. But good little suv overall
Jay Smart even I’ve also been a Toyota person like you are!
I bought my 2003 Ford Explorer used about 10 years ago. Ever since I bought it the Door Ajar light would come on & go off for no apparent reason. After watching this video, I went out & started the car & the Door Ajar light stayed on even after I shut the door. I sprayed the driver's side door first & slammed it shut a few times. Light stayed on. Sprayed the rear driver's side door next & slammed it shut & voila, as they say in Paris, the light went off. I continued to spray the other 2 doors plus the rear hatch. Hopefully, this will be a permanent fix. And maybe it will also cure the alarm from going off in the middle of the night for no apparent reason & waking up the entire neighborhood! The lubricant I used is called Supertech Lubricant which I bought at Walmart. Thanks, Jay!
Just out of curiosity, did this fix your issues ?
Same thing happened to my Ranger, also on passenger door. Sprayed with a brand x wd-40, and problem solved. I think it happens on passenger side, because not used as much and corrosion sets on switch contacts.
Another spot is the tailgate latches. Our '99 Eddie Bauer edition with the same engine, but with an extra 120K on it (never been opened, btw - still runs decently), will frequently show the same DOOR AJAR light, if the passenger side tailgate latch didn't completely engage the pin. Another tip: if the door lock cylinders don't work, spray some of the PB Dry Lube into them using the straw on the valve, then, insert the key and work it back and forth until they start turning. Keep doing it a few times, and the locks will work fine afterward. Did that about four years ago on the same truck, after losing use of the driver's door lock cylinder in 2009, and the passenger lock cylinder about a year or so later. They still work perfectly.
Sticky door switches are a very common fault with a lot of more recent cars. Life was a lot easier when they had separate switches for the courtesy light and door ajar warning than for the central locking etc...
I wish they hadnt tried to merge all that crap together, makes it a bigger pain to diagnose and repair problems. But thats the automotive industry for you i guess
@@MXguy95 You and about 20,000,000 other mechanics...
Good job on getting that light to go off...
PB Blaster is good stuff.
Every car will have it’s bugs. As for the doors if they start clacking you can tighten the bolts holding the latch to the door and to the body of the car. Sometimes over time they come loose.
Good job on getting that light to go off... great tip to remember. :)
Still daily drive my 1997 Explorer. Thing is a beast, 4.0 OHV
When in doubt, pull the fuse out.lol
Which fuse?
@@chongpooka2769 If you pull your fuse out , the speedometer and windshield wipers won't work . But I'm pretty sure it's # 27 .
I have a 2010 Ford explorer limited..
My girlfriend wrecked the passenger side doors and I found replacement doors and need to tell the dash the doors are closed. Which wires do I connect to accomplish this please 🙏
Jay I owned a 2000 ford ranger that any time the drivers door was open it would ding, keys in it, not in it at first I was looking for a button door switch and couldn't find it, cause it was replaced by in the door latch switch, was told you could replace it but car dealers oil heck out of it and kept open and closing, this approach did nothing still ding with keys out, finally found right wire on ignition and no more ding after clipped.
Second it was strange that the 2000 4cy 5spd did not have a transponder chip, the second 2000 ranger did have a transponder key, tell me about that if you can
Thanks for an interesting channel and some real about simple repairs and cars you wonder why people junk
I think they should have kept the switch separate from the door latch assembly, made things much easier to repair and access. Also, as far as the key goes, I think some of the lower trim level trucks didnt have chipped keys standard until a few years later. Thanks for sticking around and i appreciate the comment !
You did help thanks
My family has a 2000 Dodge Stratus SE that has a similar problem. Whenever the front passenger door is opened, one of the hinges makes a loud popping noise, there's no lights that come on when this happens, so I'm guessing the hinges need some grease.
This worked for my husband last night thanks so much 💕😊 no the neighbor can stop complaining lol
Use ( metal polish) to clean the headlights Glass with Fiber cloth or... too easy and amazing result
Ill have to give that a try!
Got that same crack on the rear hatch that every explorer that gen has
Two explorers I know of that dont have that crack. My moms, ( because she never opend the hatch) and one currently at the local junkyard !lol
1: Give in a good spray.
2: Lube it up.
3: Slam it around.
Are you sure you're fixing this car? Cause it sounds like you're teaching in not to talk back like a good boy. >.>
X3
Had to share on Facebook
Thank you!! 😊
Quick fix , Good job Jay. How much do you want for this Ford? or are you going to keep her for a shop car?
I had a 2000 Ford Windstar that was two years old at the time and it was constantly having problems with the latches on the tailgate. The tailgate ajar light would always be on. I sprayed them with WD-40 and I never had a problem again
Id like to know what caused so many problems with the latch sensors/switches. Because they always closed and held fine but would recognize it. And it happens across a large platform of ford/lincoln/mercury vehicles.
Jay Smart I’m not really sure what the deal is. I have a 2020 Ram 1500 that does the same thing. I’m about ready to douche both of the door latches with copious amounts of fluid film or WD-40
Thank you so much sir you saved me some money God bless you
Pb blaster is the worst to use on door hinges cause itll seep into the inside of doors and smell the whole car up
Thanks so much, that easily fixed the issue!! 👏👏
Mine does it key off engine off, cycling the door locks and the chime and DOOR AJAR light come on. I think it's a relay or something. I have to disconnect the battery when I'm not driving.
Maybe they should have used the little button that is pressed against the door when you shut it.
I got the same problem I'm going to try it
Worked like a charm
I just tried this and now my door ajar light is on constantly instead of intermittent.
Never had that with my 05 Ranger but I hear a cricket sound when I shut the driver's door
I got 2010 ranger with 4.0 sohc has 120k few days ago real cheep not only does those 4.0 have timing Chain issues they got oil pressure issues
Good job Jay ! Missed seeing you car videos
Working on getting back into it regular, just alot on my plate these days
@@MXguy95 I hear you Jay, please be careful theses days. Beer thing is spiking again in many states.
My friend yanni archnose has an explore like that one except his is blue
You'll smell that PB Blaster for weeks
Has un vídeo de la Ford Red f150 (1975/1979)
Hello jay did get the package i sent to you a few weeks ago?
Tks I'll give it a try
Wow 200 thousand miles impressive for a explorer
For this engine and trans combo, very!
My friend had one with almost 300K on it.
madmatt2024 that’s amazing 😉
@@tommyboy3261 I have a 2000 model 4.0 thats still strong as new at 215K ... But the previous owners are religious with car maintenance
Damn it David! 😂
Awesome content!
I have a 2005 Ford Explorer just like this has the 4.0 motor mine has 225000 miles on it but it has a new motor and Trans in it
how much was the new motor?
Did you go with a new engine or a used one? These are kinda pricey for a used one, so I. Any imagine what a new one cost ‘
@@MXguy95 when I bought it from the original owner they just replaced the motor and transmission in it it came out of salvage yard it only had like 40,000 miles on the motor and trans I only paid 800 bucks for my Explorer and it's also four-wheel drive
my 98 ranger had the same problem lol
Ha i am watching the whole thing.
Thanks man 🙏🏻
I got an 04 but otherwise the same one, ive put way too much money at it i threw money at it and let it get fixed I did 98% of the work ive been everywhere in that thing
It also works on Town Cars! Just spray a shitload of WD40 and slam the doors a few times
This is true! But I’ve never had this problem on my Lincoln’s ironically enough
I did the same thing to my 96 ranger. It lasted over a year then had to do it again
If it’s one a year or something then that’s fine. I keep the hinges on my other cars oiled more frequently then that
Dang you know your stuff!
Just learn as i go buddy! I've retained quite a bit of information over the years though! haha
Cool 😀
Do you still have the cavalier or did ya sell it
I’ve still got it! It’s in my permanent collection now
My 03 taurus does the same thing. But goes away on its own after dinging for ten minutes.
Try what we did in this video! Id love to know if that fixes your issue !
It will kick the codes again just reseting does not fix.
Correct, but sometimes they are not consistent. It hadn’t been drove much lately and I was running it hard, thought maybe it was affected from me just giving her an Italian tune up. Wanted to make sure the same codes return before doing any more work
I lubricated all door and hatch latches in 2006 and never had the problem again.
There is too much shit on these modern vehicles. If your doors are open a real driver could tell without a damned sensor.
Right? Maybe turn the dome lights on thats it. I dont need all this other nonsense lol
Anyone else here that machine humming in the background?
The ol dirty dodge replacement? Lol I have had a 94 ranger 4.0 5 speed myself but no explorer
Oh no no no, cant get rid of the dirty dodge lol But i do like the explorer
I seen you wipe that on the seat
No you didn’t >.
Didn't work for me
This didn’t work for me
Jay, WD40 isn't a lubricant. What are you on about?
It's the little things sometimes.
A wash, wax, amoral and some heat restore on those bumpers she will really look like something then!
@@MXguy95 👍👍👍
New toy? None wrong with them explorers for sure
For a little while yes!
Hey atleast its in decent shape if i was closer id buy haha
😎
That year of explorer had horrid transmission problems.
All of fords sealed transmissions were garbage
And so does this one! That second code is the one that comes up when the valvebody starts to go out ---- common problem on the 5r55e
Now ya know.
“Knowledge is power pup”
Yeah those 4.0 are so bad this one has 209k on it.
Probably been tore into 4 times by now. Or maybe a whole engine swap in general haha
first!
Still a $1000 SUV if it runs and drives and stops.
Where the junk yard
I dunno, probably in the same place I left it
Dora the explorer, or as my friend always said, dora the ex-piece-of-shit
That engine has about 24000 miles before the timing chain guides go bad.
Shoot, they normally don't last half this long!
@@MXguy95 usually , if they make it to 200k with no racket , you'll be fine for a while , I have a 4.0 at 215K with no noise
Mine has 265,000. Runs strong. All in how you maintain it.
I never trusted those warning lights....I mean, obviously, a door is not a jar. Sorry, I couldn't help myself lol
Oh man “slaps knee” thats a dad joke if I’ve ever heard one
The easiest way to fix a Ford is with a can of gas and a match. Lol 😆
Johnny Johnson , ford is better then government motor co. And dodge.
@@jasonjgr8580 nope. Ford is smal pp, chevy big pp, daihatsu MEGA PP
Ford all day. Chevy is garb garb
I would buy it for an average of 400 bucks
