  • After overlanding with the Starlink for one month, we give you an honest review and explanation of the system.
    For all Pan American enthusiasts:
    panamericanhig...
    During our travels on the Pan American Highway with our Toyota Tacoma and four wheel camper Eagle, we bought a STARLINK. Because we noticed that we where out of internet a lot. Driving with our Tacoma to the most remote places in Canada, US and Mexico we needed to leave spots multiple times because of connection issues. And trying to build a UA-cam Channel and other projects, buying a Starlink was a necessity.
    We explain to you how we managed to get the Starlink in Mexico and compare the costs with US and Canada. We go over the installation and features. We also show you how to work with the app and how to get the most out of your Starlink.
    So do we think the Starlink is worth it? Watch our video and comment below to share YOUR opinion on it.

    We have been on the road for almost 7 months with our Toyota Tacoma and Four Wheel Camper Eagle. Starting in Ottawa, Ontario Canada and our dream is to overland all the way to Argentina. Here is a video of how it all began (And to get to know us a little better)

    Don’t know why people want to use 12 volt power set ups, buy a cheap power station, my all powers S700 will run Starlink for 8 hours or more as the dish only draws 29-30 watts once it has acquired satellites. T

    Me and the wife have had it now for close to 5 month. Cost $161 a month for just permanent mount to house. If you want to be mobile it is around $171 a month. Which we plan to do when we travel as well. Can’t beat it never have a issue

    You could run the cable out from under the 4wheel camper where it hangs over the bed. That way it's protected from direct rainfall. I have an AC power splitter (extension cord really) coming out where my camper hangs over that I use for "shore power." I also have my solar panel input plug under there, as we have portable, sitting-on-the-ground solar panels rather than roof mounted. I just plug them into the underside of the camper where it overhangs my Tacoma. Anyway, that's a thought for running the cable out. Thanks for this video.

      That's an option as well. We aren't quite sure exactly what to do yet, but we will soon pull the trigger on something.

    love mine too, cell service in Quebec, Canada is very expensive and service area can be next to nothing at time. I would love to instal min on our 5th wheel but as you said I like the fact to move it when parked in a shaded area. I can place the dish further out and have it cap the service. Thanks for the insight. OOH also you forgot to mention we can pause the service when in Roam or mobile service at no extra fee

    Switching to 12v power isn’t likely to increase runtime very much. Remember, power=volts*amps, so as volts go down, amps increase to maintain the power the unit needs. The only saving would be the energy lost in the inverter which usually isn’t much.

    • @justtravlin
      @justtravlin  Рік тому

      Thanks for the tip! Interesting that a lot of people are interested in switching to 12v in their camper, perhaps this is because they don't have an 120v inverter? Extremely happy that I installed the inverter when building this camper. Wouldn't be the same without it. But in the mean time, we've actually been doing okay with how things are. Maybe a second battery would be beneficial but that's just as Likely as converting to 12v.

      @@justtravlin I have converted my SL to 12V and I guesstimate the power savings to be around 30%. That includes the savings due to not using the original SL router and using a USB powered mini router. The system was drawing about 4.5 amps (12V) before and now draws about 3.25 amps (12V). If you are handy with basic networking and cable building you can do this so that you can still use the original router if desired and use cable couplers so that you can configure cable length as needed.

    I might be a little behind here, but bear with me. I want to simplify all of my internet needs. We camp but not enough to justify this just for camping and keep what we have in our home, which is directv and a internet provider both adding up to roughly $150 a month. If I had the Starlink Roam, can It be used for both, our home and when we camp?
    When at home the camper sits right next to the house and is always plugged into 110 volts.

    • @justtravlin
      @justtravlin  10 місяців тому

      The starlink won't be able to replace direct TV as there is no video subscription service with it. It's just a device to give you internet.
      I suppose you can also just use the starlink roam for house internet though. But I don't think the roam has as good of a connection compared to the residential version
      But its really good at what it does! If you are camping in an area with no cell service, this is way around that.

      I roof mounted ours. Normally I park in the sun. As 680W for solar to feed.
      We have flat mounted it but could very quickly.Loosen 4 screws and unplug it. Then move it to a better position with Cat 6 extension. If needed.
      As its on a Rhino roof rack above front passenger.
      Never been bothered to take it off. As we always moving or parked up at home. Its just one evening without internet. There is plenty of other things to do.
      Buy converting it to 12V and shortening the cable to 4meters. Cable length matters. It now averages 24Wh.
      So with our system. We can leave it on.

    • @justtravlin
      @justtravlin  Рік тому +1

      interesting to know your power draw from 12v. that's not bad! and also leaving it mounted on the roof is appealing due to the fact that you never have to take it down and move it around, haha. thanks for your insight!

    Helpful video. Debating getting one for road trips, but if it draws that much battery and the price, in typical Elon fashion, varies; it sounds like a hard pass for me for right now. We have ethernet at home for just under $70 a month; so $150 a month to have the luxury of internet for random roadtrips sounds awfully painful. And that's assuming they keep the "pause" feature on the service and don't switch over to a subscription requiring you to pay a monthly fee regardless of use.
    I thought the entire purpose of Starlink was to provide internet to people globally at an affordable price? $150 is rather astronomical.

    • @justtravlin
      @justtravlin  Місяць тому

      I can confirm that the pause button still works as i use it constantly. It certainly is expensive but it is also due to each market its in and who it is competing against. There are many 12v conversions at the moment, and even factory 12v either now or in the future, not sure.

    Do you know if we can take the Rome overseas? We live in California and we have not purchased it yet. We were wanting to purchase it and take it with us on the airplane to the Philippines, and to Malaysia. And just set it up in our hotel or wherever we’re going to stay.

    • @justtravlin

      As far as we know, starlink roam Is region locked to a continent. So if you buy it in North America you'll either have to upgrade to the global plan (which is quite expensive) or rebuy starlink in the continent you are going to be in.

    Does the app connect to the unit by bluetooth? And if yes, does it require you to be online in order to sign in to the app even prior to connecting?

    • @justtravlin
      @justtravlin  2 місяці тому

      The app and hardware connect over the internet. The router will create a connection so the app will connect even before full internet access has been achieved. But you will need full service to log into your account. However you don't need to log into your account to use the internet, just to. Just to make changes

The 'roam' hardware I'm seeing in your video isn't matching the 'roam' hardware I'm seeing currently on offer at starlink's website. The one the site looks more like a panel that leans back on a u-shaped support. Am I missing something? Do you have older HW that's no longer being offered? Thanks for any info.

      @donnabond the starlink is 100% waterproof and safe in just about all temperatures. It does need constant power from a plug though so whether you make a hole or run a cord down the side, you'll have to figure something out
