DIY Harbor Freight Kayak Trailer Build

- In this video I give a full walk through of the Harbor Freight 40x48 utility trailer that I converted to a kayak trailer. On this build I only did a few modifications. The one major modification I did was add a 10-foot steel extension. This gives plenty of room for the Old Town Bigwater 132. I have about 2 to 2 1/2 feet from the front of the trailer to the back of my Subaru Crosstrek. This was a fun build that only took a few hours to complete.

I am currently building my kayak over the winter with trolling motor, battery, etc. My thought has always been to modify the harbor freight trailer in a similar manner, but everyone was using the larger, and I want the smaller one you used. Thanks for the video, I see myself replicating soon. 🙂
I absolutely love this thing. Super convenient and easy project. The only thing I have since modified is the bunks. The PVC cracked so I went with wooden, carpeted. So much more sturdy and cheap. If you search my page I did a video on the mod about two weeks ago.
Just picked up used trailer for this project. Taking this easy idea! Thanks for sharing
Good luck! Such a back saver.
Lower the tire pressure to stop the bouncing. 10 - 15psi will work for that lite of a load..
Thank you. I really appreciate your help!
Happy to help Bryan! Good luck with the trailer.
great job !
Thanks! I have been thinking about a trailer for my fishing kayak. I think mine is roughly the same as yours. The trailers I've looked at are ridiculously priced! This seems like an affordable solution.
I’ve been using it weekly and love it. So easy to get the kayak on and out of the water. No carts to mess with. The only time I car-top now is if I’m headed to a non-trailer friendly area. Good luck.
nice!
Thanks for the video. I just did an almost exact copy of it for my Nucanoe Flint. I was concerned about the flexible PVC pipe. I notice some guys have used electrical conduit, which is stiffer.
Good luck! Hope it serves you well. I love it so far. So convenient and easy.
The Electrical Conduit is MADE for being outside (or, in some cases, underground?), and is a much better bet for making "Bunks" out of. I'm thinking along the lines of outdoor carpet (Bunk Carpet) glued (and possibly riveted) to the Gray Elec. Conduit for the Harbor Freight "heavy-duty?" (1720 lb.) trailer I bought today.
Heck, even my little Titan 10.5 weighs more than 210 lbs., and I know the Titan-X 12.5 is gonna be a LOT more - especially with that 3 hp. motor and 165 amp battery...! (Yes, I AM spending my kids "inheritance money", as ya only go around once!). Lol
@@DaveysWorldFishing I replaced the tongue with a 10 ft piece of steel that my daughter drilled out for me. SO much better.
O
@@joeboyd7796 Game changer!
cross your trailer to car chains they are supposed to cradle the trailer should it disconnect from the hitch
Thanks for this video this has been super helpful. I am struggling with attaching my 2x2 steel to the frame. The predrilled holes on the frame appear to be right at 2 inches so not sure how to run the bolts. Would you mind sharing a bit more information on how you attached the steel piece to the trailer please?
Glad you found it helpful. One thing to note is that I did end up switching to carpeted wooded bunks instead of the pvc. The tubes ended up cracking.
I just went out and looked, and I believe I used the standard hole width. The bolts are close to the sides.
I posted a couple pics to my stories on Instagram. instagram.com/stories/daveysworldfishing/3273862481104864284?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==.
@daveysworldfishing
Thank you did you buy a 2x2 or 2x3
@@bryanjones2063 That’s a 2” x 2”
What’s the center to center measurement for the pvc?
what's the spacing between the the 2 pvc tubes( I guess that depends on your kayak)
@@mikepehoski1723 it does depend on the kayak and how flat or curved the bottom is. On a side note, I did switch from pvc to carpeted bunks on the trailer.
The only problem I found is that the tow bar is not 2" square. It is 2.5" wide by 2"h. So if you're thinking to use some type of extender, it may not work. I work in the sign industry, so I just got a 2"x2" galvanized steel 8ft post and mounted from the center cross beam like the original.
I took the original bar off completely and replaced it with this one. Works awesome!
Hey Davey, with the 2inch tubing did you have enough room to use the original bolt holes on the frame? Or did you just use 1 bolt?
@BOOSTED073H sorry, misread that. There was plenty of room for the two bolt holes.
Great job. I too want to extend the tongue on my HF 4x8 trailer. What size bolts did you use to mount it?
Great question. I’ll have to try to look tomorrow to see if I have anymore. Can’t remember off the top of my head.
@@DaveysWorldFishing My bolts were 38" by 3 inches. They fit the 1/2 inch holes in the trailer and the tongue.
3/8th in by 3 in .... I think you mean @@joeboyd7796
How you bolted the long tongue on the bottom of the frame? It's hard to put hardware inside the square tube and bolt down. Need to see pictures
I drilled all the way through the long tube and the frame. Two holes on the front, and two holes on the rear of the frame. Bolted it all together.
great work! how much was the 10' 2" tube? thanks
The steel tube was about$80.
@@DaveysWorldFishing appreciate that thank you. trying to get an idea of total cost. looking for a harbor freight coupon now lol
@@Swampthing401 That’s the hard part. Total cost without coupon would be right around 500.
Did you swap out the lights for submersible lights? I have the folding trailer and am about to swap out the lights.
Not yet. Those are the standard lights. I plan to swap them out, just haven’t yet.
Awesome Thanks, I have the 136 Auto and am tired of wrestling it from the truck bed, Im 67.
No problems that trailer bouncing too much going down the road with a light load ?
Hi Mark. So far this has really been a back saver. As far as bouncing goes, it certainly bounces back there, but nothing crazy. Here in California you can only legally tow up to 55mph anyway, so that helps the bounce a bit.
@@DaveysWorldFishing Thanks, Im here too I go to the sierras, have heard there is replacement springs to calm the ride but can't find where I saw it.
Thanks again for the great detailed review.
@@markskibo5159 Thank you for stopping by! I appreciate the support.
@@DaveysWorldFishing One more question, can you see while backing it down the ramp ?
Great design, patent it , after I copy you !!!
@@markskibo5159 Lol. I’d be a billionaire! With the extension it helps to see it for sure, but not easily. I mainly use my backup camera. I know of people who have added a flag to the back.
I’ll generally get to the launch area, then load up the kayak. When it’s loaded it is quite a bit easier to see.
would someplace like home depot or lowes carry the square tubing?
Haven’t found one that did here in SoCal. I just looked up steel sales and found the place I used.
where did you get the steel from? no link. Is that something you can get at Lowes?
I’ve seen some people say they have gotten theirs at Lowe’s. Our local stores did not have them. I had to find a local steel shop here in SoCal that sold it. Wasn’t to hard to find.
@@DaveysWorldFishing yea i figured, I do have a steel shop in my town that does carry that kinda stock. Now my only damn problem is getting that stock home, I am building this kayak trailer because I do not have a truck, I have a little Honda FIT, with a class 1 hitch. I may have to get two 5 foot pieces and some kinda larger stock to use as a coupler just so I can get it home
@@gardeningwithdrevs8024 Funny. I had a Fit for years and loved it. I was always amazed at the amount of room inside that thing. My 9’ rods fit from passenger floor to the back with no problem at all. 10’ might be a bit long though. Could always have it stick out the back and tie down the hatch back.
Good luck!
What is the wall thickness of that suqare tubing?
Great question. I’ll have to see if I can find the receipt.
What the speed rating for the trailer? I was reading the user manuals on harbor freight website and it said top speed was 45mph!
I believe they are listed as a max speed rating if 45. Here in Cali you can only tow at a max speed of 55. With the heavier tongue extension, it adds about a hundred pounds keeping it on the ground more going over bumps and rough road.
I am certainly not going to suggest going over what the company has rated them at.
I realize your comment is old but f.y.i. for others wondering I've pulled mine at 80mph making a a pass on the interstate without issue. I did put better grease in the hubs when I assembled it. I have close to 10k miles on mine over the last couple years and have had no issues with it at all.
Hey man where did you buy the 10ft tongue?
I did a search for steel sales and found a place close to where I live. If you happen to be in the Orange County area this place is where I got it.
Schorr Metals Inc

Thanks man how much was it
@@CarlosGarcia-sf4gx about $80
@@DaveysWorldFishing ok one more question lol what size of metal did you get like was it 3X3?
@@CarlosGarcia-sf4gx 2x2
So it cost 399 and 100 for the extra steel. Why not just buy the 4' x 8' one ?
No reason other than I didn’t want the bigger one.
Am confused…you mentioned that you SCRATCH BUILT the trailer, yet you said you bought it at Harbor Freight?
I think he meant that he modded the trailer himself
How the process in registering this in Ca?
Very simple actually. I took it on to the DMV, filled out the paperwork, they do an inspection then hand you the permanent plates.
I see the trailer is on sale and tomorrow is the last day for it. Thinking about it if the registering process isn’t a hassle. Do you just assemble it and when you’re ready to go register it, hook it up and head to the dmv or do you fill out paper work and submit it then wait to take it in for inspection? Sorry, very new to this trailer stuff so if my questions sound dumb, that’s why lol. Also, does it come with all lights and wiring? Thinking of the 48x96 1195 trailer.
@@KeepingUpWLeland If it’s the 25% off deal, that is the time to do it for sure. I think I filled out the info online. You will need to bring the registration paperwork with you that comes with the trailer.
I heard some people saying something about the “title” for these trailers are confusing. Once again, new to this stuff so technically when you buy this, does harbor freight give you a title or is it just the receipt? Thanks very much for answering my questions man!
@@KeepingUpWLeland They give you the title with the receipt. You will need both.
Sad that you have to register that trailer even tho you are only pulling a 100lb load
Yes sir. It was a pretty easy process. But I agree.
Move to FL and that trailer goes unregistered.
Where can I get the steel tube from ?
