NC native (non-indigenous) the Lumbee tribe has maintained for centuries that they took in the English settlers. Im inclined to believe them bc its hard to watch another human being suffer even if there's bad blood between communities. idk if its documented or just legend but generations later when contact with the indigenous communities on the coast was reestablished there were tribe members who had Anglican names and spoke English without having had previous contact with English colonizers. As for why there haven't been any remains found after so long, the settlers assimilated into the indigenous culture and society. I would assume they would also adopt indigenous burial practices. Atleast i would've if i had thought my homeland had abandoned me and left me for dead.
I’ve heard that too! But then it makes me wonder why they haven’t been able to find more information or burial sites since it’s a relatively we discussed theory
Imo the graves haven't been found because of one or two reasons. Idk the burial practices of the historic Lumbee people but if other Native American cultures are anything to go by, cremation, sky burials, tree burials, burial mounds, and graves are all options. Some of those rituals don't leave behind any remains. The second reason would be racism. Until recently indigenous knowledge and understanding was always discounted by Western elitism. I'm sure 300 or 400 yrs ago there were Lumbee who could've taken the English colonizers to the graves of their countrymen, but they were disregarded. The location of the graves if there were any are lost to time.
This is so interesting and plausible. Leave it to the indigenous to show kindness to these strangers from a strange land even after they’d done them wrong. Another reason for me to admire& my heart to ache for the treatment of native peoples in this country.
I love the Roanoke mystery as an anthropologist/archaeologist! It’s interesting. But it’s weird that there’s no remains because I definitely think there was cannibalism as some point like in James Town.
I’m also surprised ppl don’t talk about that angle more because in a lot of early American survival scenarios ppl resorted to cannibalism, it wouldn’t be that out of place!
well but surely as an archeologist you know that by far not all graves survive the time. it depends a lot on environmental conditions. I mean, bones are actually bio degradale. so, the fact that graves can't be found doesn't suggest they didn't exist in the first place. we would ve finding a hell of a lot more skeletons if all graves would actually leave clear traces. here in switzerland, graves get reused after 25ish years because there is essentially nothing of the dead body left at that point in most cases. whether you can actually find remains of a graveyard from half a millenium ago will depend on a öot of factors
Woah. Girl. How are you not like flooded by other humans. You're literally the only person I watch right now for history because you make it so interesting and captivating that I actually enjoy finding out what happened. Not that I don't wanna know. I just struggled to focus on freaking history books.
Thank you!! I’m convinced they make history boring on purpose so that while there’s technically a record of events most ppl won’t want to read it. Cuz most of this stuff is naturally interesting and they explain it so badly!
This is so interesting on how an entire colony can just disappear, i love you vids so much and how much detail you add from these kinda cases, keep u the amazing work!
it’s probably impossible to imagine what kind of fucked up situations those colonists went through. Literally hell. May their poor souls rest in peace.
Daisy I love your storytelling!! Can you tell us some of the popular theories of what happened to the remains? And curious what YOU think likely happened!
Most popular theory is that they were somehow destroyed! After reading the comments under this vid I’m now leaning towards them being apart of native burial ceremonies
@@DaisyFoko it’s such a weird thing to point out but I totally get it. I know I don’t have content on my page but yeah bro. Like as far as vocal inflection and the way you go about describing things ahahaha it’s so hilarious!
@@DaisyFoko oh for sure … wow the amount of info and stories we lost to colonization just overall omg 🤯🤯 new spiral but thank you . I’m glad UA-cam is finally pushing your vids omg
