Wow! An OP-XY video without loads of mindless bleating about the price in the comments. Just folks actually interested to understand more about the product. Hallelujah! 🙏
Thanks, it's becoming very clear now, understanding where they're coming from (several bits in the studio...particularly my trusty Octatrack...are breaking into coldsweats). Spent the evening with my trusty Op-Z guaging if a hulk-mode version of it will work for my usecase...but your vids have been immensely helpful
Good video, seems like a oversight that the drum sampler can’t split up a sample by transients something the Z, op1 and the two KO’s all can. Will hopefully get patched
@@Softlol Yea read through the manual, just cause that would be a deal breaker to my workflow if I'm chopping up a song. But from what I can tell it is possible, maybe I just misunderstood James, or maybe James haven't gotten around to playing around with that part yet
Awesome videos! Could you get into the MIDI capabilities a bit more? Especially sequencing multiple pieces of external gear via MIDI over multiple channels. Thanks!
The sampler on the XY is bonkers. I discovered that you can use the filter and fx on a drum kit and resample a drum one shot into itself then reset fx. Question: on multi sampler if you sample every 4th key does it pitch the sample in between keys or does it leave blanks? I mean… can you just sample just octaves for instance?
Great call on resampling it onto itself. I still haven't tried that because I usually have the master output cranked. It works with whatever keys you give it, up to 24. You could just do 1 note, or two octaves, etc., and it'll fill in the rest.
So after reading the manual, if im not mistaken, you can route incoming audio through the Tape module for realtime glitching of live incoming audio? Can Tape output be sampled to capture all the cool glitch edits?
No, OP-Z drum kits and projects aren't compatible with XY (repeating this for anyone who missed the answer in the other comment). .opz projects do nothing, and drum kits will load as audio but not as a drum kit. Pretty disappointing for me, though I may be missing something.
@@windowbed thanks so much for the answers! Sad that the projects are not compatible! But for the drum kits and the synth im surprised since everything i take from op1fun can work as much on my opz as on my op1. Since they work on the op1 i thought they would work on the XY as well Edit : hooo maybe its because i have the OG op1 and not the field, maybe the format is different on newer models
@@tombasports By default they're all set to "auto," but you can reserve a maximum of 8 voices for 1 track. I'm not sure if the auto setting exceeds that.
You're welcome! Yes, you can reverse: in the synth sampler you can reverse the whole thing, and in the drum sampler and multisampler you can reverse per sample
No functional purpose that I'm aware of. The OP-1f has the same white bar in the same spot, and it's half the width of the device but doesn't line up with the halfway point of the sequencer or keyboard.
Thanks for makings these videos ! Can you tell me if the OP-XY could sequence multiple midi tracks on an external synth (like the Digitone II), or you can only sequence one single midi track ?
You're welcome, and thanks for watching! Yes, you can assign the tracks MIDI channels and send them to an external synth on the XY. You can do that on the Z too.
Yes, each of the 8 instrument tracks can send different patterns to different MIDI channels. I’m outlining an OP-XY MIDI video I hope to post later today. :)
Windowbed, inthe intro of your video you talk about backing up the OPZ and then change subject and dont talk about how its done on the XY ! Can you let us know please. Thanks
Connect XY to the computer via USB-C, hit COM and then press MTP. At that point it works over MTP instead of mass storage, which limits things a little bit. There's a folder for projects, a folder for presets, projects, and samples. Projects take up basically no space, and presets and samples are folders containing .wav files and a .json file. This also answers your other question--unfortunately, OP-Z drum kits and projects aren't compatible on OP-Z :'(
The release of the XY makes me regret selling my Z a few years ago. I think I might purchase one again. Most immediate and fun music-making ever for me.
@@Softlol I actually enjoyed learning the ins and outs of the device to be able to create something without using any screen. At some point the app will be broken anyways, while the device is still going to go strong. Yes, hardware quality was mid. But size and fun are reasons why I would ultimately prefer a metal X over the big XY brother.
I feel like it depends on what workflow you want. The field uses 4 audio tape tracks that you record to to arrange songs and does not have strong sequencing capabilities. If you like the workflow of the OPZ, then I feel like this one is the one to get.
@@WHYZMAN_ Are you saying there is a built in 4-track tape deck within the field? How does one clean the magnetic heads since there is not much space to manoeuvre one's fingers inside the Field unit. Also since it's a field is one allowed to play a soccer match on it? i'm new to TE since today.
Keep these coming my man! Fellow OP-Z super user here!

Yup, we are all here 😊
Too much negativity is going to happen with its price but the feature set does cost that much
Right?Shut up poors
Price sucks but damn I want one haha

Exactly this IS another octatrack almost!!!
Yes these are helpful, thanks for posting!

Yeah, this thing looks almost perfect (in the way it was intended). But it is lacking in some aspects for it to be truly amazing.

This is what I’m curious about as well!
Me three! 🙏🏼
That would also interest me! Broad topic: connectivity via MIDI and maybe CV as well. Or external effect pedals?
Also wanting to know about this. I haven’t seen anyone talking about it.
@@sixesandsevensus the people have spoken! MIDI was on the list anyway so I'll bump it to the front of the queue

So what you are saying you can apply individual FX to each drum in the kit? In just a roundabout way?

I wish they will add sample per key on the op-1f. I never understood why that wasn’t an option.
Very nice.

Is it possible to take a OPZ project file and open it on the XY ??? That would be sweet, so we can continu to work on or use past projects

Great video. What's the polyphony when playing samples?
You can set the voice allocation per track for tracks 1-8, with up to 8 reserved for one track (only 24 total which is technically the same as op-z).
@@windowbedoh so the poly per track can only be 8? No one track could be 24?
@@tombasports By default they're all set to "auto," but you can reserve a maximum of 8 voices for 1 track. I'm not sure if the auto setting exceeds that.
Is there a reverse sample function? Thanks for these videos!
You're welcome! Yes, you can reverse: in the synth sampler you can reverse the whole thing, and in the drum sampler and multisampler you can reverse per sample
Nice! Funny no one demonstrated this feature so I was wondering. I'm surprised they didnt include reverse as a punch in fx tho. Thanks for the reply!
Is there a granular synthesis engine or granular processing?
Nice video! 11:06 can you convert in mono?
what's that white vertical line on the bottom between the "ramp down" and "random" button? is it just a visual design, with no functional purpose?
oh, perhaps it's like a fret marker acting like a visual reference point for the sequencer halfway point?

No chopping / slicing 🧐😑
Right lol I was surprised
That’s the thing you have to think you have 10 engines
Might need to sell my left kidney for this device tbh

Always remember why you sold the Z. Keeps you from buying another gear 😉

Only thing is the build quality and no built in screen. Sadly the upgrade cost over 4x the price :(
