- Teenage Engineering has a new DARK flagship. And it's called OP-XY. It's s huge step up in sound quality, workflow, storage capacity, performability etc. compared to something like the OP-Z. And as with all flagships by TE, it's safe to assume there will be many years of quality updates over the years.

To be completely honest, your music is not what I dig the most, and it's a pure matter of taste. However, the way you manage to put your sound signature in absolutely everything you make is astonishing to me, and that is so inspiring. You're a true artist, and a beautiful technician as well. its called random knob twiddling. Cuckoo sound is already 4th generation kid IDM style. Which he pulls off pretty good in terms of wild stuff happening. So abstract is the best description of his style. like people randomly throwing paint on things... sometimes really cool results come off..

Pretty incredible that TE's response to the abysmal build quality of the OP-Z is to tell folks to spend 5x more money to solve the problem
they also sell a $20 backpack for $300, if you'd like to carry your $2300 device around :)
The good thing is.. you don’t have to buy it. Nobody is “telling” you to spend money on this. They are offering a product and it is up to you to make a choice to buy it or not.

Wish you a quick recovery and appreciate you doing this in spite being sick. I like the improvements over the old OP-Z (build quality, keys, screen, 64 step sequencer). One of the big things i was hoping for was a much more varied synth engine with possibilities to expand it. How do you find the engines and are they expandable in some way?
The synths are superb, on that front I'm very impressed
Musicians are normally pretty strapped for cash. Teenage Engineering prices out so many people, therefore negating beautiful moments of music creation. I get it- they have a bottom line, but this is getting ridiculous. Nobody can afford this shit. People can't even afford groceries right now. It's insane to put this thing out at this current moment in human history at THAT price. They make amazing machines, but you have to spread open your butthole to use them....
It’s in a reshelled OP-1F at the same price, TE is a joke for doing this
I can see where you are coming from. For the same reason it is not for me either. But that has always been te case. There are many other groovebox/sequencers out there that go from a steal to very overpriced, but still it is very subjective. I can appreciate what TE is doing. They are a design firm, inhouse dev and design and manufacturing one off parts. That does come with a price wether you like it or not.
Its a thousand dollars more expensive than a more than willing Macbook Pro at this point.

i love they brought back the display, a big part of what i liked about the OP-1 was the vizuals.
sure for that price they could have included a 30inch oled touchscreen and some proper jacks.
I’m the opposite though, I love the OP-Z for the use of no displays. I love that limitation and the nice surprises that come up during live performances. To each their own!
This sounds so good. I also love the music you make; it's so " game-centeric " and an unapologetically interesting collection of sounds. Thanks for sharing your experience with this new addition to the TE ecosystem.
If the workflow is as pleasurable as the FIELD, it's worth every bit of the money I paid for it. I've spend so much time with my FIELD - and when I'm not tinkering with it, my girl is likely curled up on the couch with it. The people complaining about price are noise in the signal of enjoyment.
get feeling better. I recently went through all of my subscriptions on UA-cam and turned all of my notifications to full on. I'm glad that I did that because I've rediscovered a bunch of channels that I had subscribed to and for good reason. I'm going through an elimination process and yours is one of the channels that's going to stay on full notification moving forward.
Thanks mate! I appreciate it. UA-cam has a very suggestion based landing page where most of your subscriptions are absent. Most users don't know that you need to actively click your subscriptions tab to browse your subscriptions only. It's kinda devious of UA-cam imo.

@truecuckoo you mention that there s a step in audio quality. How far are we from the octatrack type of quality sound ? I never kept an op-1 because of the thin sound. I had the same experience with the ep-133 so I think you can understand what type of quality I m looking for

I know it's not exactly comparing apples with apples, but it's more expensive that a Waldorf Iridium keys. Let that sink in.
The Iridium Keys is $3000 new. The OP-XY is $2300 new.

When I first saw the XY had been released I hurried to UA-cam to see if you had made a video! I like your videos as you jump directly to beat making and don’t was 5-10 minutes reading specs off an sheet and unboxing. (Sorry everyone I’m attacking now!XD)

You can get a digitakt and a digitone v2 for that price and have some spare money for a super quality pedal, or whatnot ^^ ,,, who's the target customer, VIP's already in the music industry?
Legit point. Elektron has great offerings for us musicians, and very high quality sound. The OP-XY could be seen as a sort of Digitone Digitakt combo, jack of all trades, with incredible portable design.

I ❤ my OP-Z so I think I’m their target customer. The price is just a hard pill to swallow, when a MacBook Pro is right around the same price! I’ve had 2 OG OP-1s with hardware failures, and my OP-Z has dials popping out.

You make your albums solely on the OP or do you bring your tracks into a DAW? I have and OG-1 as well and do a bit of both

@ I bought my first synth in 1973; a Roland SH1000; it cost £325. In todays money that’s the equivalent of £3,000. So in terms of functionality the OP-XY, is indeed relatively cheap. 😉

Yeah should have thought it would be cheaper than the OP-1 Field at least, but it’s more expensive. They are just going to keep upping the prices it seems
This should be a $800ish device. I get that a lot goes into development, but you get that back at a better price-point. I don’t care if it isn’t military grade build quality.

OMG I'm trying to make music in a DAW, I can do wathever I want, spend days trying to make it sound acceptable, and I see people like you (obviously with more knowledge, experience and skills) making songs on those stuff that sound better than any of my tracks that I spend days on, without any mixing, mastering... I'm super depressed. ^^
Seems like a fun device. In terms of cost, it’s a matter of perspective and priorities. Everyone should do/ buy what ever it is that makes them happy if they have the means to do so.

Cuckoo - really great video overview on how to make a song with the OP XY. I think the OP XY is really great based on what I've seen. You are doing marketing for them and I hope they are at least attempting to compensate you somehow either by giving you to the OP XY for free or discounted or paying for you to make this video since you aren't getting affiliate link kickback.
Thanks. With TE I'm often part of the beta testing team for many of their instruments. This time I was too, but I was busy with other stuff during the beta testing period, so I couldn't contribute very much. The beta team gets a unit for their contributions. I hope I can contribute more in the inevitable forthcoming updates. Although I have opened up for affiliate links in these last few years, I still prefer to send people straight to the source than to a big online store.

My OPZ was cheap because I bought early. My 2012 Octatrack? Same price as the OPZ in Canada. I also bought an MPC Live which with accessories cost as much as this or the OP1 Field. I’m not buying Swedish gear anymore unless there’s a decent Monomachine or a Machinedrum.

Cool stuff. Get well. I know you get a lot of traffic from reviewing new gear but I'd really love to see you take a step back sometimes and haul out old gear and make new tracks with it. In this case, it'd be great to bring out the original OP-1 and make some tracks with all the experience you have gained since you first played that. Peace.

Regardless of the price, TE get you in with their ultra portability and the fact knowing, you can make music anytime, anywhere. Portablization = Demonetization 😂

You’re paying for the workflow, the technology & beauty of the design.
It’s expensive but no one has so much in something so little.
It’s like the computer became a smartphone.
TE can charge what they want and people will buy.
The sound and workflow here and capabilities are in a field or XY to themselves
…and the name. The profit margin on this is extreme.
@ they want to be the “Apple” of the music market. Put as much technology into something as small and efficient as possible with a big entry fee to join. There’s no denying they don’t have everyone’s attention 🚀
I would guess that people are overwhelmingly not buying OP’s “flagship” offerings. The ever-inflating price tags are because fewer and fewer people are subsidizing their business with a purchase. Everyone who buys one of these is making up the cost of two and a half people who would have courthouse at $1,000.
@ all synth prices for parts and so on have inflated like crazy since Covid. Synth market pre Covid was much more affordable

Just wondering if it’s possible to use it for making music that doesn’t sound like another whatever 8-bits minimal binary beat. Everything coming from these things sound the same to me. As always with TE toys, it looks very clever made but super fragile too.
Just for comparison... the Trigon-6 costs less and it doesn't sound like a short-circuited Fisher Price toy. I really hate this device.

Yeah there's a lot of people who would like that. The wild interest in the KOII definitely showed that. Let's hope they keep working on the EP-series as well, their new affordable lineup.
