I started using a bulb planter this year and thought it worked great but this is a good idea. I have a hundred to go and no time to get all that stuff. Next year! Thanks Jesse.
I started doing the same thing this year. My anger is 3 ×24 by 3/8. Iam using it to get through my Hardpan and backfill each hole with the best compost I can get. John
Hey all, feel free to start a thread on this comment about ideas for linking that auger adapter (the one recommended on Amazon) to the auger bit. I think a bolt, nut and nut luck would probably be sufficient, but I'll take your ideas. Also the bed prep was rye/vetch then flail mowed and tarped. No tillage.
A vise and a drill bit, bore out the hole slightly larger to fit the pin setup. Probably easiest with a vice and a drill press, but a good bit and some patience you can use a hand drill.
This looks great! I was just thinking how I wish I could plant my tomatoes deeper, but didn't want to spend the time digging a deeper hole with a hand trowel. I'm gonna have to try this out on my second wave of tomato transplants when they're ready to go out.
I really like this idea.I think it would be cool to plug in smaller things like blueberries, blackberries in a orchard under story scenario where you wouldn't want to lug around an auger or post hole diggers. I was wondering on a side note what's the plan for trellising the outdoor tomatoes? I'm thinking about giving Florida weave a shot but it'll be my first go at that.
I use a tulip auger to dig planting hole of almost any size in my clay soil. I can use it on any drill. A little more work but a lot cheaper for a small garden.
You need a Stihl Bulb planter. Lol. I have a friend, he makes drills for coyote trapping, for making dirtholes that fit into drills like that. Not sure how wide he goes. I think mine is a 2 inch auger. He may make a 3 inch auger. I could ask.
Milwaukee M18 Fuel brushless with side handle: amzn.to/2Bf9406 or this one amzn.to/2N57EYY They are beasts, yet still lightweight. Still have to drill out the adapter he linked by yourself.
Hey I'm a 145 lb man also, and I often feel or wonder if I'm small or underpowered bordering on the abnormal or disadvantaged, but I think that if you've got a good head on your shoulders (which I believe you do) that that means even more than whatever size, weight, or height someone is.
You should hold the drill "backwards". That means that the drill will push on your fingers instead of the thumb. A lot less pain involved. If possible, I would have the drill between my legs for support. I have a really big hand drill which I have used to drill rock with. Widest drill 32mm. Or is it 34?
Been using one on my Hilti 22 volt 4 gear drill for 4x4 post and drilling transplants, works great although I am thinking about Hilti 7/16 hex impact drill, bit higher toque 4800 inch pounds.
Brace the drill against your left leg so you won't break your wrist if you hit rock/root etc. Also, that auger is way too heavy for that drill. Can buy much lighter augers with just 6-12" long flights and the remainder is straight (bulb augers). Longer is better so you don't need to lean over.
Yeah - I've been using a Bulb Auger for about 4 years now. It's, like a foot-and-a-half too short. I'm bent over. I'm not bent over for 4 hours like I used to be, but I'm still bent over. I need to learn how to weld ... a 2 ft extension onto the thing.
Sigh... I have a myriad of concerns regarding this method, but I understand why economically this would be used for efficiency's sake. With that said please take a look at a drill such as the Bosch GBM9 with better handle support. Please wear steel toe boots. And please be careful.
Hei i tink is a realy great. I have been tinking about this for a while now and i tink i wil cut it make it smaller(lenght wise) so it is easy on the drill and just weld an adaptor . Maybe i will use a cord drill also i tink for landscape fabric this is the way to go because is hard to dig the hole after laying the mulch fabric. Keet it up😊✌✌
using this same setup only with a much more powerful electric drill motor. Yesterday I was drilling 26-30’ deep to install 3’ diameter plastic pipe for deep root feeding fruit trees. drill bit caught up on a root or a rock locked up spun around and snapped one of my fingers in 3 places. Danger Will Robinson. this setup can bite you.
Ive used a tulip auger for years to do my transplants. It fits right into the drill chuck. Im glad to see someone else using this method.
6’8” 220. You had me lmao on that one. Thanks for the video Jesse and love the content!
I was dying as well!
There are drills that have an auxiliary handle that would make the torque more manageable. Great videos! Thanks!

Seems like you'd only need about 6-8" worth of Auger bit on that, could cut down on weight of it by reducing the cutting blades.
I love the electric auger idea, definitely going to try it out.
I use an old screw bit for planting seeds, works like a charm..

Your are a smart guy love the idea thank you to partage your connaissance I learn so much
I used a drill for transplants yesterday too! Except that I used a hole saw bit to cut holes in my cardboard. an auger would be a game changer

thank you for the tutorial, cat is so cute btw 😍
I updated to a slightly bigger drill with the side handle and that solved the problem with straining my weak wrists lol
I use something like it, I mainly use it to plant potatoes. and a smaller dia. version to plant leeks

GREAT video, thank you! Can you recommend a drill, etc, that would help us avoid the compatibility issues you experienced?

Can have a upvote for the cat..Nice kitty..
Great idea. Love the cat!
Scooter rules this farm.
we use the drill a lot in dryland farming
Use the drill you own to drill the hole in the auger bit adapter to 1/4 inch?

Not sure if u said it bit adding like 1 quart of water to hole helps plant too
Should make one to attach to impact gun

Where to buy this type of auger bit

that's good for leak planting as well.
Actually just got a smaller diameter for exactly that reason
Good video

Drill bigger hole in pin 🤷♂️
Right, that's a solid idea.
Easy like you said ... no science
I was thinking the same thing

Brilliant
The important thing is REDUCE soil disturbance. Size is whatever works in YOUR village
Nice

Or get a smaller clip
Great .. a rotary hoe can bring up seeds hundreds of years old ... happened to me .. especially if there's been sheep grazing.
No till just drill
