- AHHHH I LOVED THIS MOVIE! Today we watched Batman: Under the Red Hood for the first time and YALL I am falling in love with the animated DC movies, one movie at a time. I really loved the story for this one, it was a lot more brutal and sad than I expected but I loved it. AND THE APPERANCE FROM NIGHT WING MY BB and my oh my Jason's turtle neck vibe, I swear I'm not that down bad LOL.

Originally Jason Todd was killed off because comic fans didn’t like him at all as Robin. But then they made him come back as Red Hood and honestly one of the best decisions DC has ever made.
Also Amazo is a reoccurring DC Villain.

Actually no, people did love Jason back then, except for one writer in at DC who just hates kid sidekicks in general. Then in Death in The Family, there were two phone numbers you could call in to decide if Jason die or not. Many people actually called in to vote him surviving but allegedly there's someone who set a program to just keep calling the number voting him to die, kind of like an automated scam call. In the end it's 5271 voting him to survive and 5343 voting him to die. That's like only 72 votes different, it's practically rigged. They actually got quite a backlash back then when it came out.

@@darnell7871 Yeah, and to be honest, I love Jason as Red Hood. But at the same time, some writers either don't read up on his character development over the years, or just don't care. That's why his character is just all over the place in different stories. There's him letting go, there's him still hating Bruce, there's him still wanting to kill the Joker. Three Jokers is one example. It's also a really big misconception by the writers that he died because of the crowbar beating in Death in The Family, when it's actually the bomb that killed him when he tried to shield his mom.

Good call on the uncensored version 😂. I remember watching it as a child and looking back it was actually the uncensored version I watched as a child. I didn't realise there was a censored version until later when I was an adult. It is definitely a lot more impactful.

Doesn't have the same impact without watching Batman the Animated Series and Batman Beyond. The movie was essentially the finale for both shows.

Joker is usually hired by other villains because as Lex Luthor put it:
"It's better to have the Joker in on the plan from the get-go, rather then have him find out about it later and then sabotage it for his own amusement."
Basically, it's because he's so dangerous that most villains want him on their side so they at least an keep an eye on him. LOL

Just an FYI: the Lazarus pit has always had the side effect of making the rejuvenated/revived person temporarily insane and at the same time very strong. By the time that Talia used the pit for Bruce in the "Batman Beyond" series, the al Ghul family had FINALLY thought to counteract the effects by dosing the person coming out of the pit with a soporific gas that instantly knocks them out and lets them basically "sleep it off" so that by the time they awake, sanity has returned.
Jensen Ackles of Supernatural voices Red Hood, which is awesome considering the guy is a die hard Batman fan. He even voice the Dark Knight in the Batman: Long Halloween movie, which was Actress Naya Rivera's Last film before her death in 2020. The Long Halloween is dedicated to her memory.

I love John DiMaggio's take on Joker in this movie. Plays him more on the darker side to make him even creepier.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Mark Hamill's Joker, I just like seeing different interpretations of the character. Besides, Mark's not going to be around forever.
He plays a more serious joker much like Heath ledger take on it.
Also Bender and Wakka. He's got some good range.
After Hamill he's my favorite voice. I will say for the stories he voices J in, I don't think Hamill would have done better tbh. DiMaggio's Joker is irreplaceable, even for Hamill.

I like the detail that Joker has zero idea who Red Hood is. He's killed so many people, and put so many others through hell that he likely doesn't even remember half of them
I've been looking forward to this reaction, I personally like Jason dying and being revived more than the Arkham version personally. Jason Todd is such a great and interesting character.
Yeah between the comic and the Arkham games this is still my favorite version of this story.
Well…cause Arkham had to find a way to tell this story without copying it exactly. Would have been better to have a story involving Red Hood instead of trying to reinvent his origin story.

@@spideyfan6296 Hell, the story they went with, using Arkham as the setting for Jason’s torture was a decent idea, but turning him into the Arkham Knight just sidelined any story they could have done with Jason’s character. They wanted to have their cake and eat it too; having the mystery Knight and Red Hood at the same time, and ended up doing neither justice. You could have had an interesting story for either one if the other wasn’t involved.
@@iReiGNxx Agree. I feel like it would have been cooler to just have Jason in a separate game or just have him be a partner to the Arkham Knight and just make him a new original character. I feel like they could've done something cool like have the Arkham Knight be the brother of an Arkham security guard killed by the Joker or Two-Face or someone and make it so that his motivation is explicitly to destroy Arkham, the corrupt institute he blames for his brothers death, and the villains and Batman who he also believes is responsible for helping to create and enable all the villains in Arkham. Jason could just be an unnamed lieutenant who is revealed as Jason later on by the Arkham Knight as a kind of psychological torture technique.
Jason & Bruce eventually become allies again, in the REBIRTH comics, “Red Hood & The Outlaws” he is trying to keep a promise to Bruce that he doesn’t kill. It was a pretty happy ending because they ate cheeseburgers on the Bat-mobile just like the first night Batman took Jason in 🥺.

The fact of the matter about Joker's origin story is that, yes, nobody is really sure who he was before he became the Joker. Not even he's sure of who he was before, he's just that insane. The closest to a definitive origin story we get is the flashbacks to his "past" in classic Killing Joke story, and even then, we're not sure how true that is, because he admits, "Sometimes, I remember it one way, sometimes another. If I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice."
The only real consistent parts of his origin story are that he fell into a vat of toxic chemicals, and Batman was involved.
Na we know that's jokers confirmed origin at least in the comics because of the 3 joker story where we actually get to see his wife and his son and batman admits he's always known who joker is

The best example of why Batman doesn’t and shouldn’t kill is in Batman Hush ( the comic not the movie) when Batman’s about to kill Joker in the alley. Also it makes the interactions with Jason, Kate, and Damian more interesting since they don’t share his strict no kill rule.
If you want reading recomendations, read anything of Batman that is Written by Scott Snyder, great stories, they usually involve most of the Batfam, and Greg Capullo’s Art is amazing.
Scott Snyder got too overindulgent and his stories became more vanity projects if anything.

There isn’t a definitive joker origin but the one from The Killing Joke comic is the most widely accepted one and that’s the one that has him as the red hood falling into the chemicals
It's been confirmed in the three joker storyline where we even get to see that jokers wife and kid from the killing joke is alive living in Antarctica and batman's always known who the joker is

Talia has always been a baddie. Also Ra's has his eyeliner on point. I love the fact that Jensen Ackles plays the voice of Red Hood in this movie since he's a big fan of him.
this movie was what got me really into Batman and the Batfam as a whole. I have such a soft spot for Jason because of this movie and it will always have such a special place in my heart. I'm so happy that you enjoyed it!! A part of what makes it hurts so much to me is the whole dynamic is looking at this through the lens of not only Batman losing a wonderful sidekick, but Bruce Wayne losing his son. Robin!Jason was so sweet and really adorable especially in the comics and had said that being robin made him magic. The og version of how Jason came back was that Superboy Prime punched the universe and that caused of a wave of events, one of which was Jason waking up in his grave. The lazarus pit was the second version. I personally like a weird mix of the two. And it's okay i get the jason todd thirst, lol

Jason Todd is such a fascinating character in the DC Universe, and Jensen Ackles did a great job as Jason Todd. Who knew fans unanimously deciding to kill off Jason in order for him to return after 18 years as Red Hood would be one of the best decisions DC has ever made and a very much welcomed addition to the DC Universe.
I'm excited to see Red Hood in live-action on Titans TV show in Season 3.
It's also interesting that it wasn't unanimous and there was some vote tampering by someone with an automated phone dialer. It was a lot closer of a call than we realize.
Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, and Tim Drake are actually Bruce’s legal adopted children. So yes, you were correct, they view Bruce as both a mentor and a father.
The reason why Jason wanted the Batman to kill the Joker was because he feels as if he was meaningless to Batman because of the fact that he was alive Jason didn't care that Batman didn't save him when he was upset about was that Batman didn't murder The Joker after he died cuz it made him feel like he was nothing at that point hell he had a new Robin not too long after Jason died which was tim funny part is that Batman was going to kill the Joker he had a gun and everything but Superman stopped him comic book wise but anyways back to the movie Jason pretty much made him choose because he felt like he chose the joke over him and if you think about it that's like the worst thing ever to have a insane Psychopathic murderer be chosen over you by your own father and that is why Jason made the Batman choose

I've always loved the mutual respect between Ra's and Bruce. Just the fact that Ra's felt so responsible for Jason's death that he tried bringing him back for Bruce shows why he's one of my favorite villains in Bruce's rogues gallery.
Ra’s may be immortal and may want prefer Batman to be his successor rather than Talia, but at least he does have some respect for the Dark Knight and his familu
I think you would like Batman Bad blood. It's one of the most recent ones but it has a lot of the bat family in it and i think it's a good one.

Great comics you picked up, but just a heads up, you HAVE to read Batman: The Killing Joke before you read Three Jokers, which is basically a sequel to it. Also because The Killing Joke is one of the best batman comics ever, and features what most agree is the definitive Joker origin story.

Something I need to say, the robins and Cassandra Cain (3rd batgirl) are all Bruce's kids. They even refer to eachother as family through the good and the bad. Jason being the most vocal of the robins in that regard calling each of the other robins his brothers openly and calling batman his dad every other comic. I love it
I still can't believe that there are some people who really think that Jason or any of Bruce's sons can defeat him in a fight 😂😂. He taught them everything and the fight between Batman and one of his children is like Kratos fighting with Atreus.

Jason todd is and always will be my favorite robin/ DC character his true origin is in the main continuity of DC comics and it's a crime he doesnt have his own game and Movie yet its insulting

This Joker origin story is the classic one that is the most often used. If you wanna dig deeper into it, I'd recommend you to read The Killing Joke, it's actually a pretty short story.

Under The Red Hood is one of my favorite movies. Introduced me to Jason Todd and Red Hood for the first time. He's definitely one of my favorite partners of Batman as he had a lot of struggles to him. Also, you look very cute Krysta. Just... Had to say it
I love how Robby in Cobra Kai got Red Hooded by Johnny in Cobra Kai Season 3 with the locker now that I think about it Robby and Jason are almost exactly the same.

I love this movie! I'm glad you're reacting to animated batman movies. This movie is definitely sad, but I love it so much and I have so many memories watching it
The Lazerus Pit can heavily extend the life of the user but after you are in it you lose all sense and reason and become a rage filled hyper aggressive person. This state usually lasts for 20 minutes or so before the person's mind returns. However, if you put someone who had died in the Lazerus pit....there is a chance it will drive them insane.....
Ras' sees Bruce as the son he never had, so it makes sense he'd have empathy for the Robins (closest thing to grand children before Damien).
John DiMaggio is a TERRIBLY under-rated Joker voice actor, imo. One of the few to bring his own ideas to the role, instead of trying to imitate Mark Hamill.

That flashback was meant to be with Joker’s first identity before he became the clown prince of crime. He had the identity of the Red Hood which was used by other criminals, while Jason had a different take on it, Joker was the first we see wearing the hood.

Neil Patrick Harris - Nightwing/Dick Grayson. Best known as Barney Stinson from HIMYM. Completely captures Dick's superheroics.
Jason Isaacs - Ra's al Ghul. Best known as Lucious Malfoy.
John DiMaggio - Joker. Best known as Bender from Futurama and Jake the Dog from Adventure Time. Still wimsy, a little bit campy, but has that insidious undertone.

We need more people watching this it’s to underrated and it’s fire.
Under the Red Hood was a good movie, but it did condense or rewrite some stuff that kinda damages Jason's character and the story compared to the comics (Though the comics also try and retcon this stuff cos the writers loath him and love Bruce) Off the top of my head:
Jason wasn't reckless chasing after the Joker in the comics, he'd seen the Joker threaten his birth mother and trusting her, he revealed his identity to her and promised to help. She claimed Joker had already left, then led him right into an ambush before pulling a gun on him and putting it to the back of his head. Despite that when Joker betrayed her, he still freed her and died shielding her body.
Another important, missing aspect, is Stephanie Brown, Spoiler and for a brief period, the fourth Robin. She got made Robin by Bruce which was a huge deal to her, but to him was just part of some fucked up mind game to lure Tim back. He basically sabotaged her education, not teaching her to lock the Bat-Plane, doing stupid shit like getting set on fire during fights and then punishing her for disobeying orders to come help him.
He basically gaslit and gate-kept her until she was so desperate to earn his approval after firing her for disobeying orders once (When other Robins disobey all the time) that she tried to pull off one of his plans, an insane scheme to take control of all the crime families in Gotham, but cos he never told her "he" was Matches Malone the plan failed and when she tried to fix things she spent five days being tortured by Black Mask (Who then became the kingpin of Gotham) before dying on the operating table. (A fan movement had it retconned that her death was faked and she was kidnapped by the doctor)
Interestingly, both she and Jason were hated by the writers and both of them came from extremely poor backgrounds and abusive households and tended to challenge Bruce a lot. Stephanie's debut comic was even on Jason's birthday and both were Robins who died due to a rogue and came back. Both had drug addict mothers and abusive, criminal fathers and Bruce even said in the comics she reminded him of Jason which put his messed up treatment of her into a new context.
The writers hated Stephanie due to mysoginy and class warfare and so despite in previous stuff often being shown as very capable and smart they kept rewriting her as stupid and incompetent, and they do the same with Jason, claiming he was the angry, disobedient, 'bad seed' Robin which takes all the tragedy and pathos away from his character, just as sabotaging her skills and intelligence fucks over Stephanie's character.
Basically, Jason's birth mother and Stephanie's death are major aspects to either Jason's character or the Bat mythos in general and the movie ignores them to basically erase Stephanie and make Jason out to be incompetent and unable to escape his criminal heritage.

Read the killing joke. It’s a “possible” joker origin story. They made an animated film based on it that’s very close, but the first 20 minutes or so are controversial to say the least. An extra batgirl subplot that wasn’t in the comic at all.
Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill play their traditional roles though, and the comic faithful parts are very good.

In Death in The Family, the story where Jason died, there were two phone numbers at the end of the issue you could call in to decide if Jason die or not. Many people actually called in to vote him surviving, but allegedly there's someone who set a program to just keep calling the number voting him to die, kind of like an automated scam call. In the end it's 5271 voting him to survive and 5343 voting him to die. That's like only 72 votes different, it's practically rigged. They actually got quite a backlash back then when it came out.
And you know what, I love Jason as Red Hood. But since you mentioned that you're checking out Three Jokers, gotta warn you that he's not written consistently throughout different stories. Writers who wrote him either forget, don't read, or don't care about his character development in things like Red Hood and The Outlaws. So he flips flops between letting go and doing his own thing, still wanting to kill Joker, or not mending his relationship with Bruce. It's frustrating to say the least.

Keep in mind that it was the *reader’s decision* for Jason to be killed off. The death was pretty messed up even back then.
If you want to watch something that's a little bit weird, in the Batman animation, go watch *Batman: Gotham Knight* ... It's an Anime (well 6 short anime) made in different styles. The 6 stories connect together. My favorite is "In Darkness Dwells" (short story with Scarecrow).

They actually released a second movie this year I believe and it's an interactive movie where you can choose the outcome. So you can actually see what would've happened if Jason didn't die or what happened of batman made it in time to save Jason. It's awesome it's called batman death in the family.

The Whole Point of Joker's existence is to prove that Batman can break. You talk about putting down Joker like a rabid dog, but to Joker that would be the ultimate punchline if Batman killed him. Joker by his own death would prove that Everyone deep down is as twisted as him

there is kinda of a follow up; Batman: Death in the family. Its an intereactive movie (kinda, if u get the physical copy) the digital one is just a retelling of this with a few other hings in there.
the physical copy as numerous scenerios that alternate that are what ifs....
example
what if Bruce Saved Jason
What if Bruce Saved Jason but died
What if Jason Kills Joker
What if Jason becomes Red Robin etc
one scenerio will turn into another, with another choice. kinda like a choose your adventure story with the Death in the Family/ Under the Red Hood as part of the story

Black Mask was originally a man by the name of Roman Sionis. He was a friend of Bruce Wayne, and was a respected member of Gotham's social elite and owner of Janus Cosmetics. Unfortunately a series of poor business decisions led to him going bankrupt, thus losing both the respect of Gotham's upper class and the support of his own mother and father. Both of them caring more about their own public image then their own struggling son.
So, in an act born out of a combination of financial desperation and his own personal hatred for both of them, he had both of his parents killed by burning their house down. Thus, leaving all of their own wealth to him. He then paid his father's grave a visit and carved a black mask out of his dad's coffin. In an inversion to how his parents presented themselves as stand-up citizens to the Gotham upper-class, Roman puts on a mask to be his true self ... the Black Mask.
