I live in middle Georgia (Macon area, Zone 8a) and I have three citrus plants in the ground....Meyer Lemon, Valencia Orange and Cara Cara Orange for over a year now. I cover them with a greenhouse to protect them against the frost. I also pile up wood chips around the trunk of my trees too. Yes, some of the green tree limbs die.....the green limbs(no bark) will die and turn brown. These dead twigs will have to be trimmed off next spring. However, my citrus sprang right back with fresh new limbs at spring time. I've found that if the trunk or stem has bark grown on it, it will withstand the cold temps and as long there is a covering over the plant too.

Thank you. I'm in North central GA, and have been fighting the urge to put my citrus in the ground. It got down to 17 degrees here last January, I'd hate to lose all my precious trees.
My Meiwa kumquat and Meyer lemon are in ground. We saw a low of 17 about a year ago and I just covered my lemon with towels only during the night of the 17 low and it was exposed for the rest of the winter. It is planted right up against my house, but it is doing great and currently ripening lemons.
Thank heavens, somebody that gets STRAIGHT to the point like an arrow. THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

Can you post a link to the green house that you use?
I’m also in Georgia 8a and grow citrus. I grow the super cold hardy hybrids like Yuzu, Thomasville, orangequat, etc.
