  • Here is a great antique sewing machine from the late 50's. It works as good as the day it was made.
This is the link that I referenced in the video if you would like to read some more about this model of sewing machine. mivintagesewing...

So very excited to see this video show up in my feed. This is the exact, and only, machine my mom ever owned. She received it as a high school graduation gift from her parents in the 1950s. My dad taught me to sew on this machine. My mom used her sewing machine weekly, right up until she died at 82, last Aug. My 27 year old daughter now owns it, and loves it, especially the root beer color. It has always sewn beautifully...such a treasure to have something that Nana loved so much for so long. Thanks for the video.

I just inherited model 117.740, it looks just like this machine, I’m hoping it operates just like this! I have had an old kenmore for years, but this one is much more technical. Thank you for giving us all this information, I’m sure it will help me get acquainted with my new machine.

"Clicky switch" is now my new favorite term.
I love that the bobbin winder tire interacts with the belt, that's brilliant. Gorgeous machine, and, as always, beautifully made video. Thanks for sharing!

I bought a Kenmore 117.740 sewing machine from the thrift store for $40 complete with all attachments, extra bobbins, some replace plants even.
This sewing machine is the closest I have found with a video explaining the machine. My machine is similar to this the light switch / light is at the end of the machine left side of needle .. I hope to learn a bit about my machine by watching this over and over ! Thank you so much

Serious old Kenmore unit! It's a good looking machine as well! I believe it is built to stitch two layers of denim and not even balk if fed properly! Thanks for showing us this fabulous unit!

This is my grandmas machine that I now own. I am so happy that you made this video. I am now going to go try to find the operations manual. I have not sewn (on a machine) in over 20 years but I am taking a refresher class this weekend. Very excited to revive this classic beauty.

Glad I found this video, just in time. I just bought this model sewing machine but mine is blue-grey, supposed to be delivered late this morning. I'm going to appreciate the quality, I have no doubt that I'll be able to use size 69 nylon which I am in the habit of using. I'm 67 so I'll have been between 3 and 6 years old when this machine was made, quality is something they cannot afford to put into their machines anymore, our machines will see 2,3 and maybe 4 generations of use. Thanks again. Turns out it was the 117.740 model.

As always great video Alexander. I found mine on the curb of a house, ready to be picked up with the trash, it was in very bad condition, rusted and all parts frozen.....I gave her all the love she was in need of, and as your title says, "today it works as good as the day it was made"!

Well I got this machine and then some. Complete with all the pattern cams and box, all the different foot attachments, screw driver, original manual, Sear's and Roebuck sales tag with down payment and monthly payment amounts, and the business card of the Sears Roebuck salesman who sold the machine. It runs like a dream and I'm sewing 10 oz. double layer canvas.

I just scored this machine for free , along with a vintage Pfaff in cabinet. The Kenmore is missing the bobbin case and they chopped off the plug . I might have another one laying around. Thanks for the video, very informative! I’ll share it to my FB group : )

Years ago, a Sears appliance salesman told me that Kenmore washers and dryers were really made by Whirlpool. The agitator was slightly different and they just slapped the Kenmore name in it. I’ve heard the sewing machines were White also. White was bought out by Viking-Husqvarna machines. You have to call their customer service line to find out the age of a vintage White from the serial number. I love the quality of a White. Recently purchased a vintage one from the 90s.

Hi Alexander Dyer, really could use your help.
I was just gifted this exact model, Saved from the dumpster. Greazy dirty frozen stitch length controler and other areas. She mostly works now. Straight stitch only, but so nice, I see what you mean about quality over similar Japanese models. Rewired everything. Motor is perfect.
I can't get the cam followers to come back down to the cam after they roll over a peak. Everything is loose and working from the needle bar back to the axle in the followers, and the spring seems plenty strong. Keep trying heat, tri-flo, and wiggling, no joy.
Am I missing something? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Love the content, like-minded follower.

Very cool machine. As always, a nice thorough demonstration.
I have a question about belts: I see you put one of those stretchy black rubber band type belts. When looking at supply websites, I also see the bumpy red belts, and tough black V-shaped belts (like wee little automotive belts). What are your thoughts on the pros and/or cons of the various types, and why did you go with this black rubber band type?

    • @AlexanderDyer
      @AlexanderDyer  5 років тому

I wish I had some deep insight for you.😅 I am afraid that in this case it had an old one just like this and I liked how it fit in the grooves. I have bought the lugged belts and I like how those look too, especially the orange ones which thinking about it now would have been perfect for this machine. In the end I guess just go with your preference.
