  • Here are some of my vintage sewing machines from my other sewing passion. I love finding and restoring vintage sewing machines. The craftsman is incredible, they were designed and manufactured to last and for the most part you can still get a good stitch from a 100 year old machine. I get so excited about vintage machines, its hard to pick a favourite one as they each feel like they have their own personalities. Please note - they are not for sale.

Oh my! You have some marvelous machines! I'm sure we'd all love to see the rest of them at some point too! I own three modern machines, but I share your love of well-built vintage as well and currently have a collection of 16. Most are Kenmores (my favorites), but I have 2 Singers, a 301A and a 201-2. I also have a couple of Universal machines from the early 60's. A few of my machines are quite powerful. I have a 1954 straight-stitch Kenmore with a 1.5 amp motor and a chain drive, which will chew through 8 layers of denim as though it were butter. It's great because I'm currently working on a bunch of canvas projects. As you know, no way can modern domestic machines stitch through multiple layers of heavy denim or canvas. Not all my machines are in usable condition but again, like you, I love working on them, fixing them up and bringing them back to useful life again. I just finished refurbing the 201 and it's superb.
      Please keep posting great videos!

Great video. Love all the vintage machines. I'm glad you saved them and they have a loving home. Someone just gave me a machine I'm trying to find some info on and I'm not having ANY luck at all. It was rusted and the hand wheel wouldn't even turn when I got it. I spent hours cleaning it with Q-tips and carefully sanding the rust off the hook and bobbin case. Got it freed up, oiled and all the knobs turning now. But the tension assembly doesn't have a spring on it? Do they all have take up springs? I'm very new to sewing and can't find anything about this machine. It says it was made in Japan. It has the name National in white in all capital letters on a little light blue plate, which matches the color of the machine. It also says Stretch Series and Super 100 on the front towards the top by the knows. The little metal plate on the underside says its Model 100 Serial number 05583. I took the motor cover off and it says Sewing Motor Model YM-40, if that's helpful at all. I would really appreciate it if you were able to point me in the direction of anywhere I could get more info. Keep your videos coming, they are awesome. Sorry for writing a book in your comments.

I love the hunt , i collect vintage machines , mainly singer but have a few other brands , i just bought a bundle of 5 machines for 100 bucks canadian , a 15-91 singer , Capri by singer , Necchi BU , pfaff 332 and the last one was a mint 1951 206k i was trying to give the lady more money but she said she can see my pasion for them and said no they are going to the right person so 100 is good . I own 12 vintage machines and need help my wife says , you can only use one at a time , why do you need so many , my reason , they are from a time when people cared about what they made and where they worked , we need to not forget we once made thing the best we can , instead of thats good enough......

Thanks so much for bringing this wonderful display of machines ,matching your equally extensive knowledge of the histoy.
In 1960 I had a collection of over 100 mostly Singer machiines which after a marriage I donated to a museum....Move on to 2010 and now in France, retired, I began doing it all again. these machines are captivating...I have a collection of over 50 (still growing)
I have just bought for 20 euro a Singer 411 that I think you have as a 401. and it came with all the discs and bits and I will go so far as to say I doubt it has ever been used.
All my 4 grandchildren have sewing machines, mostly 15K variants, and it is wonderful to see the work they make....and... the interest from thier schoolmates..
Keep spreading the gospel....sewing machines never die ☺☺

I loved seeing your beautiful collection!! I adore vintage machines, and have a few of my own. I've just purchased my first Featherweight 221. I love it!!! I've learned so much about them by watching youtube videos. I had my first thread jam, and learned why. I learned to always turn the hand wheel towards you, never away from you. Even rocking or a slight turn in the the opposite direction will start the jam in the bobbin area . Luckily, I was able to watch the Featherweight Shop videos and I was able to fix it without damaging my bobbin case . There is an order to removing the parts so you won't break the finger part of the bobbin area. It's not fun to handle a thread jam on a Featherweight! I think I'm going to order the thread jam tool in case it happens again. Enjoy all your lovely machines and happy sewing 😊

Thank you for displaying your wonderful collection. In 2019 my mother pass away (97yo) we had a wonderful relationship. Before she passed, she handed me one of her old machines, before that time I did not paid much attention to sewing machines. Then one day I got in front of that old machine and made it work beautify (long story short), now I have my apartment full of machines that I literally have to walk sideways LOL. I often wonder what it is of vintage sewing machines that are so addictive.

I own about a dozen vintage machines. My go-to-machine is a 501a slant needle Singer Rocketeer. I do almost all my sewing on it. I don’t have a modern machine. I have a beautiful Japanese clone that is red and cream named Belair like the car. I feel it is better made than Singer. I have a Japanese clone that is pink! Although I have a featherweight that I love the smallest machine I have is an Elna Lotus which is remarkable. All my machines sew beautifully. My goal is to learn how to use my two treadles. The hand wheels on them turn in different directions so that will be challenging. I am so thankful to UA-cam that educated me on how to work on my machines.

@@SaturdayNightStitch , I have watched that video a few times, it’s fascinating how these old Singers were manufactured. How hard these people worked! I have a singer 99k, from 1956, I named her Elsie, after my grandmother who was from Scotland, she immigrated to the US, in 1920, as an indentured servant! She had a very hard life. My Mom, was a professional seamstress, Both of my Grandmothers and my Mom, when she very young, worked in the lace and textile mills in RI. I love your collection of sewing machines, I only have 2 presently, am planning on retiring and moving very soon, and can’t wait to hit the thrift shops and add to my collection!

You have the wrong bobbin inserted into your Featherweight. That's why the bobbin case won't fit. It's actually a class 66 bobbin what will fit into your 401G. Find some class 221 bobbins (they're cheap) and that bobbin case with your 221K will work. Look up The Featherweight Shop here on UA-cam. They have many mini-instructional videos.
    Happy sewing! 😊

The 4- step buttonhole does give more flexibility than the automatic options on my Electronic Janome. I ought to use it more, but I suppose I’ve got used to the Janome.

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video. For the machine if you are looking to sew with slightly heavier materials up to leather for simple leather projects then a Singer 401G will have the power for that with the benefit of having zig zag stitch functions - just make sure you use correct needles for the fabric. If you are not bothered about zig zag and just need a straight stitch then you cant beat Singer 201K in my opinion. Good luck with it! Buying these vintage machines can be a tad addictive :-)

Thank you for sharing. Do you use all of them or do you just own them and have one machine that you actually sew on. I had the vintage machine bug a couple of years ago and recovered. I own four vintage Necchis, some Singers including a Rocketeer, Singer 201-2 and 15-91, a Kenmore build like a tank and two Berninas (1230 and 1030). I really only sew on the Berninas but I feel guilty about not using the others at all!

    • @SaturdayNightStitch
      @SaturdayNightStitch  3 роки тому +4

Oh wow - the Rocketeer! I certainly salivated over that one for ages before I accepted that the likelihood of my getting my hands on one here in UK was very slim. I do use them - some more than others (my cabinet 201K is a joy) and my Brother 661 tend to do more than the others. I try to use them at least 1-2times a year as a minimum. Sometimes one will stay out and get used until it doesn't have something (eg my 201K-2 doesn't do buttonholes).

This is an older video...Did you get your featherweight to work? In this video, it looks like that plastic bobbin in not the right bobbin for that machine. I learned to sew on a featherweight and the bobbins are flatter. Are you sure your bobbin case is wrong instead of the bobbin?

BEAUTIFUL COLLECTION!!! I freaked out when you turned the wheel backwards on the firsrt sewing machine and continued to do it on all the machines!!!!!!! please don't do that it can ruin the machine.. thank you

I hear people say that all the time (about turning the balance wheel the wrong way) but it's never explained how you ruin a sewing machine that way. You may blunt the needle hitting the hook mechanism but that's about all the ruination I can see.

Thanks for sharing, however, there are many knowledgeable people who watch your video and beginners who need correct information, so I suggest that you redo this video...maybe first research sewing machine repair and collecting. It would be nice to see clean machines and cases and add a few matching cabinets.

Why does this woman turn the handwheels in the wrong direction on every machine?
I cannot watch any more of this; I don't think this woman knows how to sew.
