    It sounds very expensive, but building a single car parking spot is far more expensive. The new car parking garage next to Utrecht bike parking costed 100M€ for 1200 places, which is 83,000€ per spot! Cyclist are much cheaper visitors of your city centre: less than 3% of the parking cost (in our dense city centres)

    • @wimahlers
      @wimahlers 4 роки тому +5

      Do you mean the Utrecht railway station bicycle parking?
      It costed about €30 million for 12,500 parking spaces.
      See:
      www.duic.nl/algemeen/grootste-fietsenstalling-ter-wereld-opent-maandag-in-utrechtt/#:~:text=De%20gemeente%20Utrecht%2C%20ProRail%2C%20NS,ruim%2030%20miljoen%20euro%20gekost.
      Average costs per bicycle parking space:
      30.000.000 / 12,500 = € 2400
      To compare, the average costs for an underground parking place for cars in the USA is about $34,000 (about €28,700).
      Above ground parking garages about $24,000 (about € 20,250) on average.
      See:
      shoup.bol.ucla.edu/HighCost.pdf
      The minimum costs for a dedicated car parking space in the USA I could find is: $10,000 (about € 8,400).
      See:
      www.homeadvisor.com/cost/outdoor-living/pave-a-parking-lot/
      Keep in mind that it often is €0 for parking bicycles in the city when parked against a tree, on a sidewalk or similar spots.
      Not completely €0 because there are some few dedicated parking places for bicycles just on the surface.
      And if there are any, it usually is just some painted line on some part of an existing sidewalk or some part of an existing road.
      See, among others:
      fietsberaad.be/wp-content/uploads/Hasselt_fietsenstalling.jpg
      Notice that you can divide the costs per parking space by ten (given the above example).
      To illustrate, it means (hypothetically) that in a street of 50 houses with a car parking place each, you can park 500 bicycles instead.
      And then there is, of course, the yearly maintenance costs of parking garages (lights, cleaning, guarding, repairing, etc.).
      I don't have any figures for that. But I think it is not unreasonable to assume that, on average, a car park is more expensive to maintain.
      Also keep in mind that just building a separate above ground bicycle parking garage from the ground up would have been cheaper.
      Railroad bicycle parking garages are more expensive because they are underground and integrated with the railway station itself.
      I am not sure but I suspect that the building and maintenance costs for the following bicycle parking "garage" are much cheaper per bicycle parking space. See:
      thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/het-parkeren-amsterdam-van-de-fiets-28038873.jpg

    • @AndreSomers
      @AndreSomers 4 роки тому +11

      @@wimahlers Note that building under ground in the Netherlands, especialy the western, more populated part, is very difficult due to the ground being very soft and mushy with very high water levels in many places. That drives up the construction costs of many buildings and infrastructure projects in these parts, so I am not sure a comparison to construction costs in the US makes much sense.

    • @wimahlers
      @wimahlers 4 роки тому +4

      @@AndreSomers
      Building underground parking garages below sea level in a swamp (much of The Netherlands) is indeed more costly to build.
      Comparing bicycle parking garages with car garages, as I did, is comparing apples with oranges. Because, stating the obvious, one garage is to park bicycles and the other to park cars.
      I use the comparison only to show that your city can be much more economical and liveable when you densify the city and provide more faclities for bicycles and implement mix use zoning regulations. A city and zoning regulations focussed on cars looks like this:
      ua-cam.com/video/ioSZOt37PBo/v-deo.html
      And this:
      ua-cam.com/video/odF4GSX1y3c/v-deo.html
      As to densification see, among others:
      ua-cam.com/video/6mWE9UJDRLw/v-deo.html
      Note: In the last link "Lisa McDonald"(interviewed) still thinks in terms of the current zoning regulations. She is unable to imagine that you can have an office besides a residential complex adjecent to a grocery store besides a small neighborhood park besides a school besides a public swimming pool ... etc.
      Though it is true that a zoning change alone is not sufficient to solve the problem (red: Mayor Jacob Frey). You actually have to redesign the city and its infrastructure. And that is a difficult and painful process.

    • @JasperJanssen
      @JasperJanssen 4 роки тому +1

      Wim Ahlers building a separate above ground parking garage wouldn’t have been cheaper, though, because there isn’t room for them.
      Also, Utrecht’s isn’t actually underground.

    • @wimahlers
      @wimahlers 4 роки тому +1

      @@JasperJanssen
      I believe you are wrong on both accounts. See, among others:
      ua-cam.com/video/ynIRAhoqoBc/v-deo.html
      The Utrecht bicycle parking has a cellar. And a lot of bicycle parking garages, especially the newer ones, are partially or completely underground.
      The extra costs for underground parking as compared to above ground parking are caused by excavating, additional reinforcements and waterproofing/drainage. See, among others:
      www.schaikomega.com/uploads/images/ondergronds-parkeren.pdf . (article in Dutch)
      Notice that this article pleads for underground parking and emphasizes the benefits for the above ground infrastructure, and pleads for restructuring the lot costs.
      Other architects plead for the opposite, plead for removing underground parking all together. See, among others:
      www.mobiliteitsplatform.nl/artikel/ondergronds-parkeren-heeft-langste-tijd-gehad . (article in Dutch)
      Note: I personally disagree with the latter. That is, you can create, for instance, an ecological facility (fish, mushrooms, etc.), a local logistical storage facility, an energy (battery) storage facility, a water storage facility, and probably many more alternative applications for a vacated underground parking garage. The latter architect just lacks a creative imagination. He thinks binary. Namely cars or nothing. And nothing inbetween.

    I myself have indulged in this "bicycle religion" in the Netherlands and ride my bike almost everywhere.
    Great video!

      If you like living in tiny European houses, paying high rent, having less space, go for it really. No one's stopping you.
      I'm not shitting on Europe, I live in Prague, it's absolutely beautiful. I can go to work by bike, tram or bus. Public transport is excellent. But rents are high, space is low, and it's quite crowded and that's a problem if you're introverted. Living anywhere has its pros and cons. Same with America. America is car centric, but it's more spaced out, bigger, rent is way lower in most American cities, and you have the convenience that comes with cars. People living there love that, so let them keep it right?
      Why change an entire society to get only a part of what you want? come live in Europe with us, and get something that you want that's already there.

I meant no disrespect when writing this comment, I was just reveling over Europe’s bicycle system and how cool it would be to see more bicycles around. As you know, in America, people who can’t afford a car usually take a bike to commute as an alternate means if transportation (possibly a scooter or something else). But bicycle lanes aren’t respected by a lot drivers on the road and accidents quite frequently occur. So I thought it would be interesting to see more tolerance for bicycles in the states. But I definitely agree with you that there are pros and cons to living anywhere and that we shouldn’t shove the cons aside and only address at the pros.

    Another great thing about these kinds of bike parking is just how incredibly space efficient they can be. Just a rough estimate, but in the space of 2 car parking places, I estimate you could fit about 50 bikes if you have one of those bike racks where you have two levels. Now imagine a parking garage with 12.500 cars in it next to Utrecht Centraal.
    Seattle SEA-TAC airport has a parking garage of about 13000 places, just go and look that monstrosity up. It's 300 by 400 meters on the longest sides and has 8 floors (so say it's 32 meters high), making it easily much larger than Utrecht Centraal (the actual station) which is only 250 meters wide and 90 meters along the tracks, and 18 meters high at its highest. It's absolutely insane how much space car parking can take up.

      To illustrate here is just a copy of my reply from a different thread...

    • @TimothyWhiteheadzm
      @TimothyWhiteheadzm 4 роки тому

      @@wimahlers Excellent summary, and yes, the correct comparison would be a parking lot for a railway station or airport. The reality is most railway stations do not have sufficient parking as it is not really feasible, and airport parking tends to be more expensive to park in than the average parking lot. Here in South Africa the main reason why bicycles are not used more, is a lack of secure parking. I walk or even drive rather than cycle to the shops for example merely because I cannot park my bike safely at the shopping centre. This makes a bicycle purely a recreational tool here.
