Michael 'Eddie the Eagle' Edwards made history at the 1988 Olympic Winter Games in Calgary. He became the first competitor to represent Great Britain in Olympic ski jumping. He finished last in both individual competitions, but his spirit and personality captured the imagination of the world.

If this guy is banned from the games,
Why isn't he banned from the channel?
A true Olympian. He embodies the spirit of the world.
Sadly the Olympics and fellow competitors hated him because they saw him make a mockery of the sport and actually was more popular than the top ski jumpers.
Complete shitshow
If it weren't for the movie you'd have never even heard of him.... and here you talking about he's the spirit of the world 😂😂😂😂
@@billyjack4131 I watched him compete and haven't seen the film. Maybe you're too young to remember him before the film. The IOC changed the rules after this Olympics so that it could not happen again. Sadly now you have to be in the top 30% or top 50 (which ever is less) to take part in the Olympics.
@@petesmart1983 that is spot on, unfortunately that was the feeling amongst the elite.
He is the only ski jumper that I know by name!
😂
Rgwn without cheating what is his name? See you don't know.
🤔 I'm not sure that "the eagle" is his real name.... actually I don't think "Eddie" is even his real name either lol
Skied with Eddie quite few times and couldn’t believe how talented he was, completely fearless and a smashing bloke.

Always thought he seemed like a decent guy.
Such a pity he had to spoil it by lying about his promising alpine skiing career!
1988 was a different time. The coverage was nothing like it is today. So when this happened it was huge. He was huge. Rightfully so. Everyone was feeling the Olympic Spirit with Eddie the Eagle.
If the film is true…then just imagine attempting a 90 meter jump for the first time, It must be terrifying…he did it on the world stage at the Olympics. What a hero!
I think they took a lot of artistic liberties... for example. it wasn't a ski jump in Switzerland he met the coach and also got and opened the letter saying he was accepted into the Olympic team. it was at a Mental Hospital in Finland.
Brave and a perfect example of what the Olympic spirit is all about…GB hero.
My dad watched every ski jumping competition (ski jumping is really big here in Slovenia) and he'd always call us kids in the living room and even my mom watched when it was Eddie's time to jump. We always cheered for him because he was an underdog and very brave.
I think 50% of the people cheering Eddie on were just waiting for a horrible crash.
@@Easy-Eight Well that's part of the drama.
We have just watched the film and enjoyed it a lot. We were fed a load of rubbish from the media back then as well
@@Easy-EightBS. He was everymans hero. Always fighting and never giving up.
@Easy-Eight No they were not !!!!!
Такие люди как Эдди Орел двигают Олимпийские игры вперед, ведь этот человек олицетворяет собой девиз: "Быстрее, выше, сильнее "
This is one of my favorites stories of the olimpics
Tungsten balls! Eddie The Eagle- what an inspiration, dedicated and courageous.*LEGEND!*
true hero
Eddie is my grandad's cousin's son - only claim to fame for our family.
I think that’s a fantastic claim, if you are in a movie you live forever!!
My Grandma use to be friends with Eddie, they use to ski together in Gloucester. lol
@@ugli1440 no way! Cool
So your second cousin once removed
@@sie4431 yep exactly
To anyone criticizing him I would say , strap on a pair of skis, run down a 90 m slope and land on your skis.
Beautiful video 👍
He finished last but yet he is the most remembered. Who is the 1st winner again?
I guess Matti Nykänen isn't that well known outside Finland, but for us he was a legend for both Ski Jumping, and his antics after his sports career. watch?v=NNcyLhsFOm4
Matti Nykaenen and Janne Ahonen are very well known in Germany!
Matti Nykänen. He was an amazing ski jumper, dominating every ski jumping event at that time. But he struggled later in life, became an alcoholic and serial wedder, attacking his wives, being arrested multiple times and was even a suspect with one of his wives of stabbing a friend of both to death while they were drunk. He died in 2019. Still an alcoholic and a diabetic.
@@oldinion he is a much bigger name outside of Britain than Eddie the eagle.
@@oldinionMatti Nykänen is a legend and always will be! Greetings from Switzerland
I watched him jump out my back window from my house in Calgary in 1988 😊
He didn't get far because his balls weighed him down
he’s better at ski jump than 99.99 percent of people that have ever watched him.
There is no movie about the best Ski jumper (then and in general) Nykänen, but one about the worst...
Have you watched the movie?
@@Johnneilson13 what's your point? That Nykänen appears in that movie? It's still about Edwards
Chill Amin was just a question. It's a unique story is why it's been adapted into a film wouldn't you agree? There's no market for a film about Nkänen
@@Johnneilson13 that's the point...
We all love an underdog story.
He definitely wasn't doping!
Eddie 👍👍
Van Halen did the song for him
I can’t sneeeeeed
a bit rich celebrating Eddie after you changed the rules to stop people like him competing in the Olympics
RayGun anyone?
Who’s we? From letting men compete in weightlifting and boxing to making triathletes swim the Seine, and for always selectively enforcing drug bans, I’ve never approved of the IOC. But individuals deserve to be celebrated.
@@littlecatfeet9064completely ignoring my point
@@RaceDayReplay Not getting your point. You’ve identified a villainous “you” as compared to yourself, I suppose, so you must have lodged some protest against the rule changes. Where are you from anyway and how did you fight the rule change?
Yo ed where invite
🇮🇷💚❤💙🤝🇬🇧
🔥🔥🔥
matti nykänen won all. is that olympic history if country let you go competition. well its kinda but its easiest of all history. just need go
2nd comment
Que vergüenza
They banned him because he was getting all the attention, this is the very ideal of the olympic spirit, but not in the eyes of the ioc.🤷♂️🇬🇧
Let's not forget while eddie the eagle was making history of his own for England...
Jamaica had just entered their 1st ever bobsled team that same year...in 1988
Really? They should make films about both of these events
@@paulg903 🤡
@@eily_b 😁
@@paulg903 I am glad they did 😍
Found out today that there is one too of Eddie 🤗
Yup. Cool Runnings baby.
He is a hero. he had the nerve and spirit to succeed at his goal and have fun doing it. Who needs to win all the time, is that all sport is about?
He's an inspiration for us all...
Well... The Olympics *are* meant to be a display of absolute peak physical ability. It's also been used as a political device since the Cold War. Each country is meant to send their absolute best athletes.
@@giantidiot31 yes however Eddie was the best in his country, because he was the only one
@@luketeahuru2867 It's less common now, but many countries in the past would simply not participate if they only had amateurs or have never had the native conditions for that event. They made a comedy about the 1988 Jamaican Bobsledding team. I'd say that acknowledging your shortcomings (compared to other Olympians) and not participating is more respectable.
It's just one of those things that we won't agree on, so arguing is pointless, y'know?
@@giantidiot31 your username is spot on
Ray Gun brought me here
It was a disgrace that the IOC created a rule specifically to ban Eddie from competing in future Olympics
what was the rule?
@@samhandwich1326 it is dubbed the "Eddie The Eagle rule" and it basically made the entry requirements even stricter for aspiring olympians. Making it that athletes have to be in the top 30% of their respective sports on an international level.
Why is Edwards beloved but the idiot rich Saudi skier was dismissed?
@@lurch5376 seems like the appropriate response to this situation though does it not? Otherwise literally anybody could just sign up and compete. No disrespect to this Eddie guy, obviously he's got bigger balls than me to even try that
@@crazypolite
You could be the best in your country but still not in the top percentage on the international stage. This seems unfair to athletes who want to represent their country.
"He didn't win a medal but he sure did win a lot of hearts"
One of the greatest olympians for sheer spirit and enthusiasm. Legend.
I wouldn't mind going home from Olympics with nothing in the pocket but the national record.
This guy had balls.
Thankfully he also had skis.
The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part; the essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well.
Can’t compare this guy to Raygun. Raygun stole a spot from a true Olympian. The only thing Eddie stole as our hearts.
After Eddie was vetoed from the Olympic Downhill skiing team for coming from a working class background, he made his way back by finding a sport that nobody else wanted to do. Raygun stole someone's spot using her husband to rig qualifying tournaments. They will never be the same.
What a shame they banned him from any competition. A true legend.
The other jumpers were jealous of Eddie.
@@anthonyfoutch3152 they were probably afraid as well that there might be just that small chance that by sheer luck he could've got the better of them on the day. how humiliating would it be for you to have been taught since a child, have the best teachers, resources and experience available, only to be beaten by a guy who had fun and trained with nothing. there was no pressure on eddie to succeed, his competitors however...
I am so proud to be British and I watched him make history at the Calgary 88 Games. He truly was an inspiration for everyone. It’s all about the taking part not the losing and he was simply amazing!.
He deserves a medal just for skiing down the slope
Laugh all you want but he held the British ski jumping record for 13 years!
I got know about him from the motivational movie Eddie the eagle 🦅 lots of love from india 🇮🇳❤️
A true sportsman with never giving up attitude
As a norwegian, I think he is a true sportsman! ❤❤❤
never been into sports, don't ever watch the olympics, but I watched Eddie in the Calgary 88 olympics. I don't remember anyone elses name from those olympics, but Eddie is a legend and will always be remembered.
Heart of a lion Eddie had , total respect even going up that high .
Truly an Olympic legend
I had 500 quid on him to win.
while in the air i was like 'yea he's not going to land that' and as soon as he did, i cheered
Everyone knows Eddie The Eagle in the UK, no one know the names of who got the gold, silver or bronze that year
Everyone remembers Eddie, hardly anyone remembers who won gold.
I'm impressed with his efforts. Sometimes goals don't have to be victory, just follow your dreams and have the confidence that you can achieve them, and ultimately be happy with what you've done without comparing yourself to anyone. I wish someone I knew would think this way.
The guts you need to do that ...
I just watch this so many times, im inspired , i maybe not an athlete but you can learn something from this story
We Love Eddie the Eagle, the Hero from Ski jumping
What an inspirational guy.
Got 2 young ones to watch the movie, and these clips. They were in awe of Eddie, and his amazing achievement. Recognition was too short lived!
His inspirational story stands the test of time 🔥
I was 16
Eddie was awesome .
They really exaggerated in the movie
A true hero he was. He was the only reason I watched ski jumping
I can’t imagine doing it with glasses on 😂
Finland remembers Eddie forever!
Yesterday Rachael Gunn made history by scoring zero in breakdancing. The new Eddie The Eagle?
similarly, USMNT run by bunch of soccer moms...
No, because RayGun should have been caught by the Eddie the Eagle Rule.
@@SuperDuperHappyTime Raygun be Making Eddie The Eagle Great Again

Respect for Eddy the Eagle.

A real hero. He said that he was afraid to jump, but everytime he won the fear. My hero + Matti Nykänen...
Greatest respect...❤
I remember me and mum cheering for him at the Ol' lympics. I remember only him jumping, so who became immortal? ;)
He was fine with the jumping. It was the landing that was the problem.
Me watching this after the 2024 paris OLYMPICS disaster
It was after this that the Olympics really showed what they were all about, basically lost all interest in them
He should have been given the support that he needed.
All I can say is the guys got more guts than me there's no way I would even try it.
So much better than Raygun and I say this as an Aussie. He has real courage ❤
Absolute legend 🤘🏻 ❤️
British hero, did he every get OBE or anything!
@Sen
I’m disappointed to say it appears he got no such recognition.
But on the other hand, he was able to get £10,000 an hour for advertising and promotional work, so he got something for his troubles. 👍
He got CTE instead.
The best motivational guy ever👍
Счастливый человек ❤❤❤❤❤. Мололец, Эдди! Отличный пример того, что не нужно никого слушать и твердо илти к своей мечте!)
I remember Eddie the Eagle at Calgary all those years ago. All the world loved him. The movie nearly made me cry. The actor played Eddie brilliantly. A total disgrace that the IOC brought in that rule.
Quite, the IOC subverting their own ideals.
Eddie was not the only athlete that was making attention that year. The Jamaicans were also a headline 😂😂😂
He once said the losers are the people who won't get off their backside, the winners are the ones that have a go.
Eddie didn't need a medal. He is the embodiment of who a champion is! More athletes should adopt his magnificent determination, grit, and spirit!
All that without talent.
Hero 👍
In case anybody is wondering, Matti Nykänen won Gold 🥇🇫🇮
But who remembers THAT?
Little known fact - Eddie used a third ski to carry his enormous balls.
Love it!!
My favorite thing about Eddie the Eagle is how much he looks like Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys
Cult legend
UK's cool runnings
Thank you Eddie! Whenever i need a boost of courage to follow my dreams - I watch your movie!!! I love and admire your raw talent and taking the chance on yourself with the entire world watching. INSPIRATION SUPREME
What a a true spirit he brought to the Olympics ❤
I remember watching Eddie as a kid. He's a national treasure 🇬🇧
Eddie also invented the window sill , what a ledge
Anyone ever wonder if the creators of Trailer Park Boys created Bubbles off of Eddie the Eagle's likeness?
Temerity. He has it. Eddie if you ever come across this comment, firstly Hello! and secondly it goes without saying that You Sir are amazing! With Love from Kitchener Ontario, Canada
Me watching after the Australian breakdancer
This is awesome! Fly like an Eagle Eddie!!💜💜💜💜💜
The purpose of the Olympics is to compete not win.
I'm sorry I'm confused why are people admire him if he finished last? How did he show his spirit as a lot of you are saying?
He is 1) britoin 2) funny
I mean he didnt fall thats something i couldnt do
