    What I like about the M5000s is that you can press the open doors button when the tram is still moving and it will open them automatically when it stops, so you don't have to hover awkwardly over the button waiting for it to unlock like you did at 6:24

    The baby on the T68 tram in the first clip must be nearly 30 years old as I am around their age.

    I kinda fell bad for the passengers in the summer. From the roofshots at the end I can see that blank space where the passenger AC should be on the M5000🙈.

    4:19 Mosely street being a yellow stop even though M5000s never went there

      Single unit trains could have stopped there - but not double unit trains ... so they passed through non-stop. Its a shame as this was a popular stop and the alternatives are less convenient

    Handy tip! If you press the door open button before the tram stops, it will flash. Then when the tram stops, the door will open for you!

      @irl_zulu 8 років тому +1

      Correct! That button is often used as a stop request on other trams and even trains (not really that much in Britain though) as there are no stop request stops on the Manchester Metrolink, and even if there were, every single tram would probably stop at most of the stops anyway.

    The metro must have fire cast more passenger journeys per. Tram etc. The new trams with much less set makes for a less claustrophobic experience during less busy times. Also during peak times/rush hours allows for increased capacity due to increases standing room compared to old trams which had more chairs . Not as comfy for peak time passengers.Definatly more efficient. Get you to your destination. Good planning.

    Did the T68/As have automated announcements in the 1990s? I know I say this question a lot, but for me I’m often curious to know.

    I miss the T68s. Had a lot more and better quality seats. Seemed a better ride from memory as well. The new ones are more ‘functional’ as they just have standing space to squeeze as many on as possible.

      I highly disagree, the T68 tram's seats felt worn out, old fashioned & very uncomfortable. The trams didn't have proper air circulation, the sounds they made whilst sliding on the tracks were displeasing to hear as you could tell they were getting corroded, they also had many breakdowns and cases of derailing. Yet the new M5000s have better safety systems, proper air ventilation which kept the carriages at an even level of cold to warmth which was well during the seasons; the seats are a tiny bit uncomfortable but highly better than the T68s. The track sounds aren't as annoying as the old T68s and now the doors have better handi-capped assistance, yet as the T68s they had steps that caused it to have only 1 or 2 entrances for the handicapped customers which were at the peak of the stop's slopes. I think the change from the T68s to the M5000s was very handy, but I think Metrolink should put 1 T68 tram on a specific day of the week for nostalgia. From what I have heard there is only 1 left in Manchester and that's in Heaton Park being preserved and I'm very lucky to live close to Heaton Park and I may one day get to see the T68 tram in its preservation or maybe moving around the park itself.

    I miss the sounds of the T68 as much as anything, specially the door close tone. Also 2 stops shown there that no longer exist, Mosley Street (which as an Altrincham line user was my go to because it’s the first stop out of town that all teams served) and the old Bury-bound platform at Victoria.
    The one thing I will say in favour of the M5000 is illustrated by the buggy in the first clip, although I find the lack of seating to be frustrating outside of peak times which could be solved my flip down seats

    I like the T68 and the M5000 for different reasons. The old trams felt more like a proper metro train on the out of town sections, the new trams feels like being on a shopper hopper bus in comparison. The service in general can be very patchy at times. It doesn't take much to throw the entire system into chaos. Sometimes not always metrolinks fault they need to be building alot more lines in a way that they can divert trams if anything happens at cornbrook, the entire network all goes thru a single platform there. Not a great design when say a tram breaks down.

    On balance I liked the T68s better. They sounded better, had better horns, and you had a much better chance of getting a (more comfy) seat. But I can see how the new ones are better for boarding/alighting quickly when packed and the interior does look lighter.

      I filmed it! I am old enough to have been there when these trams were introduced and lucky enough to have been able to film inside at quiet times when there were few (if any) passengers. It helps that in the summer it does not get dark until 9pm (21:00) - or later.
